Title: presents for teachers
Post by: Allybee on 12 Apr 2009, 17:02
I want to get gifts for the teachers that wrote my college recommendations. I'm having trouble thinking of things to get them and I wondered if the qc forum could help me? internet links are much appreciated.

the first teacher is my junior year honors english teacher. he is the tennis coach and loves abraham lincoln. I don't have a particularly warm relationship with him, though, so I'm not sure if something jokey would be appropriate. I wanted to get him something nicer than just a gift certificate to a bookstore. he introduced me to dostoevsky and I'm pretty grateful for that.

the second teacher is my AP biology teacher. she is famously cantankerous but really took to me (for some reason my particular brand of humor appealed to her). she was an accomplished neurobiologist before teaching highschoolers, and she is the advisor to the science team. I think she'd like something nerdy (maybe from thinkgeek). I was thinking about getting her some of those plush microbes but she already has them!

anything that you can suggest is really helpful. thank you in advance!

these teachers are not hip enough for mix cds and I dunno if baking would be appropriate, I know at least that the english teacher does not eat sweets! sometimes he brought his guitar in though and then we'd sing "loch lomond" over and over again.

Get them apples to put on their desks.

Actually, I have no idea.

I came in here for the sole purpose of posting that image only to find Spluff had already done it. Good show!

Loch Lomond is a band.

No, really; usually I'd write a "Thank You" letter, and give them a bottle of Appleton rum, or Sangster's Rum cream.

(My father worked with J. Wray & Nephew, and my teachers found out that somehow)

I painted a flower pot with biology-related things (and potted a flower in it) for my grade 10 science teacher. I'm not sure if that would be a suitable present now, seeing as you're older than 14, but it was super cute and she really liked it.
All teachers like plants, it's a fact.

I think I gave a teacher of mine a graphic novel once.  Can't quite remember the title though.

It is pretty sad that one of the first image results is a dildo

Why is a giant dildo called the Great American Challenge? The great and the challenge parts I understand, but 'American'? Are they trying to say it wouldn't be a challenge for other nationalities? Are they calling us loose?

I gave my teachers the gift of not being in their class again next semester. This usually made them really happy. Then again, I was a jerk to my teachers in high school

This one kid in my 5th grade class was a big showuppy cunt and gave one of our teachers a pearl necklace.

The following year, when I found out that 'pearl necklace' was a euphemism for something hilarious, I laughed the heartiest laugh ever laughed.

A heartfelt thanks would probably not go awry, teachers go sorely unappreciated at times considering what they have to deal with.

But seriously get him/her booze. preferably decent vodka.

Give them sex.

But not with you, that would be creepy.

(I've never gotten or expected gifts from people I've written recommendations for, it's just part of the job, so I'm sure they'd be pretty happy with gift baskets. Gift baskets are easy, get them gift baskets.)

Skip the booze Ally. In college that would be more appropriate.

I would say buy them something fun related to the subject they teach and give them a card that tells them just how much you appreciate what they did for you.

You clearly don't know many high school teachers.

I can only speak from the perspective of someone who has taught primary school, not high school, but I really appreciated it when the parents gave me a bunch of nice flowers (who doesn't like flowers?) and I loved the self-made gifts from the children. "My" children made me a book where everyone had contributed a page with a hand-drawn picture of themselves and they had written what they remembered from the time with me. ONe girl wrote how what she was most impressed by how I showed them different tricks with a skipping rope in PE! That book is super-cute,it really is a treasured possession of mine, and reading it makes me all gooey inside.

So, my recommendation: Maybe you could make your teacher(s) a card and write inside how you appreciate that they wrote recommendations for you and what you will remember from their lessons? I don't know though if you are crafty and I can't tell if your teachers are the sort of person who would appreciate something handmade. That, and/or some flowers would be my tip.

Anyway, that's the gift I give to my Spanish teacher and piano teacher before the summer and before Christmas, and if they're not really good actors, then they seem to appreciate it.

Archie McPhee has a great selection of weird action figures
http://www.mcphee.com/categories/action.html

There are ones like Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Edgar Allen Poe, and Charles Dickens, which might appeal to an English teacher!

For the biology teacher, there are anatomical models ( http://www.mcphee.com/items/M6070.html ) but thinkgeek might be a safer bet.

PS This place has an Abe Lincoln action figure! http://www.historynetshop.com/cbal.html

I need to stop editing this post, but man I found an evolving Darwin action figure SET. For eleven bucks!
