Title: I do love a new purchase
Post by: michaelicious on 18 Apr 2009, 16:16
It's been awhile since we've had a thread dedicated to our music purchases. I have decided to put more effort into building up my record collection and I thought seeing neat stuff that other people have obtained might be a good way to find out about limited pressings or 7" series or what have you. Also, I am interested in your record collections!

Preemptive Strike: If you have the urge to post something about dick wagging/measuring or any other sort of phallic competition please feel free to take your sense of superiority to a different thread.

I just got my repressing of Q and Not U's No Kill No Beep Beep in the mail yesterday. I figured I should finally get it on wax since I have loved this album for nearly 10 years. I ordered it as a birthday present to myself. It is on gold vinyl! I missed out on the repressing of the "X-Polynation/Book of Flags" single on clear vinyl by about 1 hour so I was even more excited about this.

Last month I ordered Gasp Asp, a 7" from Florida up-and-comers Look Mexico. It is the first (and only, so far) release from the label Tiny Engines. I am really impressed with the quality of the packaging. You'd think they'd been doing this for years. It has been pressed on white, green, and blue vinyl. I got the white option because it came with the neat little red foil detail on the title of the record cover.

Also, yesterday I ordered a copy of Romance of Young Tiger's Marie as another belated birthday present to myself. I didn't plan on getting this anytime soon but I had money in my paypal and there are fewer than 100 copies left, so I had to snatch it up. Here (http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=245584176&albumID=1058920&imageID=12956188) are some pictures of the packaging. What a cool band. They are quickly becoming a favourite.

I am quickly amassing a wishlist that is going to put me into debt. Your turn.

Hm, the most recent vinyl I purchased was Dinosaur Jr.'s Beyond when I went and saw them.  It came with about four songs and a b-side on an included 7-inch.  It's pretty awesome.  Before that I got The Psychedelic Furs' Talk Talk Talk.  I think that's a repressing, though, 'cause it was still in the shrink wrap and it was eight bucks.

I mentioned this somewhere else but the biggest vinyl purchase I made recently was on Sound&Fury's Passeridae 7" subscription series. It's a series of 12 7" pairing Australian noise/drone/ambient artists with counterparts from elsewhere. Each split comes on a different color of vinyl in hand screenprinted, hand numbered sleeves. There's only 100 of each and there are some really sweet pairings like Tarentel/Seaworthy and Moonmilk/My Cat is an Alien and Scissor Lock/Jasper TX and The North Sea/Anonymeye plus a bunch of others. I haven't gotten any of the records yet (the series was really delayed and they ship in groups of 2-4 or so every few months from Australia) but I think the first two records in the series are waiting for me at home right now. It was an expensive series but I'm really glad I sprung for it. The sleeves look like variations of this:

I also recently got Temporary Residence Limited's 7xLP Eluvium vinyl collection which basically compiles almost everything Eluvium's done in a gorgeous hardcover book which comes with all original artwork and is hand signed by the label founder/set designer, the woman who did the artwork, and Matthew Cooper aka Eluvium himself. They only made 1000 of them and, again, it was expensive but oh so worth it. Gorgeous stuff!

On another note, I picked up a couple Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers records lately. They are so damn good! I kinda like the novelty of vinyl for most things and I'm not sure if I'm in the "vinyl is always better!" camp but when it comes to jazz, well, vinyl is better.

I kinda wanna order that Eluvium set, but I think it would be cost like 50 extra dollars for them to ship it to me. It's pretty silly that they air mail to Canada when they are based in New York.

I really wanna pick up Marie, as well as I Have Supped Full On Horror. I was gonna pick them up when I saw them for 5 minutes, but I didn't have enough cash on me. I am also highly considering for my birthday ordering the Eluvium box set. It does look absoutely incredible and apparently its probably gonna be OOP soon, so good thing my birthday is a month from now.

Anyway, since yesterday was record store day, I splurged. I'll post pictures sometime soon (today).

Oh man, Magic Bullet has some very cool Romance of Young Tigers stuff. I sadly don't have any of it but it's on my list of Things to Purchase. Also, the Eluvium boxset is expected to sell out by late Spring, as Temp. Res. Ltd. still sells a few every day. Act fast! It really is worth it. The thing is a beauty (far, far more impressive than Sigur Ros' sorry attempt at a boxset, for example).

This thread is not allowed to die.

Anyway first off Michael TRL actually redid their shipping prices recently! You should go to their website and see if the shipping is any cheaper!

Now on to purchases! After HUUUUUUUUUUUGE delays I finally got my copy of Hymn to the Immortal Wind today. And my god is it beautiful.

The packaging is truly incredible for this album. As you can see, it comes with seven beautiful inserts and the slabs of vinyl are really pretty colors. Also, with the inserts, on the back of them is a story for each song! I haven't read them yet but I bet its incredible.

With it came the reissue of One Step More and You Die and NY Soundtracks.

There's not as much packaging for this album , but thats okay! And I really like the color of this vinyl too! The dustcovers have pretty rad designs on them though (you can kind of see the one for one step more in the second photo) so thats a plus!

Also recently I went to a show, with the hopes of seeing a DC punk band called Control. Sadly I missed them. I got their 7" though!

Its pretty good hardcore punk type stuff! I really dug it when I spun it! On the inside there are lyrics, thank yous and some photos (one of which a friend of mine took). I think they're going on a short east coast tour early this summer so if you like punx search control myspace dc or something like that to look up the dates.

And lastly, when I went to go see Suis la Lune a while back they were out of 10"s since it was their last date for their tour. So i ordered it.

No fancy packaging at all, just one little insert, but god this is such a brilliant 10". If you dig the more melodic scremo type stuff, I highly recommend you pick this up.

Okay thats all. Now go buy more music you mediafire kids.

Holy shit, that is the best news I have gotten in awhile. I am getting my tax return back soon and I will probably spend it all on that site now.

I hadn't seen pictures Hymn on vinyl. It's beautiful. I just got my Romance of Young Tigers album in the mail the other day. It looks even better than I had expected. I'll post pics when my copy of Sharks Keep Moving's Desert Strings and Drifters gets here.

Closer "Hymn..." pic:

It's beautiful!

I recently picked up this from Aquarius:

So happy this was repressed!

I also recently ordered:
The new Ilyas Ahmed CD from Root Strata:

The Taiga Remains album from the same:

Aaaand, the new Anonymeye CD from Sound&Fury along with their upcoming releases by Pefkin and Felicity Mangan
(http://www.soundandfury.com.au/018.jpg)

Sound&Fury are awesome for many reasons but one of them is packaging. Most of their releases come in hand made envelopes sealed with hot wax and an actual seal. So cool!

No pictures of my own, but I just ordered this in vinyl as a random impulse buy. In retrospect, this probably wasn't the best idea, but oh well. The album art is pretty enough and it's probably for a good cause.

So I just bought Loverboy's Get Lucky LP on a whim for $2 out of a cheapie used records crate outside Bleecker Records.

It's in pristine quality and barely has a scratch on it. Also I really just bought it to have Workin' for the Weekend on vinyl but the rest of the album is surprisingly well-written.

My most recent purchase is the new Eluveitie CD. I'd recommend it! It's, well, accoustic folk-metal, if that makes any sense. I think it's pretty awesome, anyway. Also, the special edition has a bonus DVD with their 2008 Summerbreeze set on it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msRy4vcSX4k

Further, I stumbled upon the new God dethroned, Passiondale.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MA7g2K9PlYw

It's a conceptalbum about the WWI battle at Paschendal in Belgium. Again the bonus is awesome, a best-of live CD.

Heartily recommended, both.

My friends and I want to start a band called Coverboy, and just play a cover of "Workin' for the Weekend". I'm sure it's been done before, but there is always room in the world for cheesy Canadian 80s tribute bands.

This is a really great thing. Good job, TMT.

Went to Pearl Street Mall in Boulder on Mother's day, found a nice record store. Got In The Arms Of God by Corrosion of Conformity, which I had been wanting for a while, and A Slight Case of Overbombing by Sisters of Mercy on impulse. On Tuesday, I find that In The Arms of God has managed to get scratched. FFFFFFFFFUUUUU! I need to call my friend, see if he has anything to fix it. I got it on my computer, but I don't have it in a format my MP3 player will show yet.

The other day I ordered one of my favorite 10"'s ever, The La Quiete / Louise Cyphre split, and it came today!

My god, do I love this split. When I was first getting into emo, this was one of the first splits I ever downloaded. So while yes, I realize Orchid does what Louise Cyphre can do ten bajillion times ever, that side especially just holds a special place in my little punx heart. The La Quiete side is incredible as well, though I have to say I prefer the Louise Cyphre side.

The Mountain Goats/John Vanderslice split really grew on me so I decided the get the vinyl. Green records were sent out randomly so I'm hoping to get one (despite the 1 in 8 odds)! Pics to follow (from what I've seen, the cover art is awesome).

Recently I went to a CD seller to check out something I keep hearing people about, here and in the music press: Sunn 0))). Now I was convinced that this was just boring droning 'music' but I thought to myself, let's give 'em a fair chance, people must like it for a reason.

I am still mystified why anyone would like Sunn 0))). A little help there might be appreciate it, so that I at least understand. Needless to say, it wasn't for me.

Luckily there was a sale on so I bought some Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Hank Mobley, Cannonball Adderley, Dizzie Gillespie and Stan Getz.

So ... it wasn't a wasted afternoon.

This came up on OSG, and the only explanation we could come up with (even from us Sunn O))) fans) is sheer heaviness.
Title: Re: I do love a new purchase
Post by: De_El on 23 May 2009, 11:28
Yeah, I've heard it said that Sunn O))) is all heavy and no metal.  For my part, when I listen to a Sunn O))) album, I approach it kind of like a film.  I just sit down and listen to it all the way through, really fucking loud so that the sound resonates in my body and sort of surrounds me. But I mean, if you have no patience for music with no clear melody or beat, if you need a hook to focus on you're not going to like Sunn O))). I dunno. I like them a lot, so I take listening to their music pretty seriously. I feel like if you do it right it can be a pretty intense experience.

Just ordered this from the always awesome Root Strata:

"Tsuki No Seika - A Capella 7" Subscription Series
Wow, this has really been a long time in the making. It's great to finally see this project reach the light of day. Originally conceived as a 7" box set, 'Tsuki No Seika' will now be offered up as a subscription only 7" series in four installments. Each 7" will be a split, and each artist has contributed an a capella track. That is to say, vocals only! In addition, all of the artwork is done by the artist. Copies will not be sold in stores, or via mp3 download sites, and we have no plans to re-release this material in another format in the future. The contributing artists are:

Grouper
Christina Carter
Richard Youngs
Islaja
Xela
Zelienople
Hisato Higuchi
Valet
"
Can't wait!!

When I was at school, I bought this record, in mono form.   A couple of years ago I wanted to have a copy again, and easily found it in mono.  But it was actually recorded in stereo, copies of which are unaccountably rare, and usually listed for over £200.  I came across an eBay auction for the same recording released on an obscure German record club label, but I fluffed the bidding, and missed the opportunity to get it for just £25.  Then the other day, a stereo copy of the London release (it's a Decca recording) popped up for $7!

Oh uh I've actually made a bunch of purcahses recently that I haven't noted. About a month ago, I picked up the Pianos Become the Teeth/Ezra Joyce 7" split. Then about two weeks later I picked up A Q and Not U 7", a Rites of Spring 7", and A 7" split between DC pop punk sweethearts The Max Levine Ensamble and the band they sound way too much like whos name I can't remember. Somewhere in there I picked up a Cult Ritual 7" out of a box at a hardcore show. And two days ago I picked up Secret Name by Low. I would post pictures but my camera cord is MIA.

Though the great artwork on Animal Crack Box makes me happy, I must say it's far from essential.   Yawn.

Got a couple random ones lately...7" White stripes cover of Lord Send me an Angel.  side b You're Pretty Good Looking.  Cover art sucks but I like that track.   Finally picked up Grizzly Bear Yellow House, I never got around to buying that so I gave my friend Feels for it.   Oh yeah, and someone gave me Isis- Celestial because I commented on how its one of the few harder bands I enjoy.   That was sweet.   I've been contemplaying purchasing some El Guincho... only heard a track or two but I liked what I heard.

Just got:

Xela/The North Sea split - Electronic Music Vol. 1 (LP, Rite Records)
Xela w/ Greg Haines and Danny Saul - The 12th Chapel (LP, Type Records)
Xela - In Bocca al Lupo (2xLP, Type Records)

I would post pictures but there's not much point. The album covers are very cool methinks but couldn't be much more minimal. The first two are just white with a small hand stamped label in the middle (the first w/ all credits in Latin, the second in English and hand numbered, both marked as editions of 300. The third is in a light brownish sleeve with a weird little symbol on the front, nothing else).
Hooray for awesome, kinda scary noise!

Just ordered.....

Deerhunter- Rainwater cassette exchange

Jonsi & Alex- Riceboy sleeps

Grizzly Bear- Horn of Plenty

Riceboy Sleeps is fucking awesome. Well, unless you don't like ambient music. In which case you won't like it. Did you get the special edition box set? I am still waiting for mine to come in.
Title: Re: I do love a new purchase
Post by: Lexington, 125 on 24 Jul 2009, 18:45
I like all kinds of music including ambient, just from my preliminary listens it doesn't strike me as anything groundbreaking.   No special edition box set for me as I prefer to own it on vinyl.   Pretty bummed they didn't have a special edition pressed on vinyl though....
Title: Re: I do love a new purchase
Post by: Koremora on 25 Jul 2009, 01:07
It's certainly not groundbreaking, but then most things aren't. It is, however, a very beautiful, moving, interesting, and well-constructed album of ambient music. In that regard it's excellent.

So today there was a review of the new Jay-Z album in Mx that was so bad it made me want to throw up and die. The only thing I could do to stop myself from exploding with rage and getting on the six oclock news was to go out and spend all my money on records so I went to my local spray paint store and bought these.

I have been repping the Headbanger 12" so hard lately it is ridiculous I don't own this album

this is officially the first battle record I have ever bought. I think I made a good choice based on the cover art alone, which if you can't see well enough features DJ Craze dressed up like crazy French Aristocracy just being a dick

this is a 12" by a band I have never heard of, but they basically had me sold on the art work and it turns out they are pretty good rappers as well! Unfortunately whatever douche imported this into Australia stored it really badly so it almost a cone shape. It still plays fine but is completely useless for scratching and mixing at the moment. However I am going to get some glass and flatten it out when I can be fucked. Apparently people do this all the time!

The last record I bought was a Dilated Peoples 12" with a few really sick tracks and instrumentals on it that I am going to put to good use but I can't be fucked finding a photo of it because the cover artwork is essentially just a reproduction of the sleeve with the record in it so it's really not that interesting.

Last thing I bought was Colour Haze's s/t.  It cost a a bit more than twice what I'd normally find acceptable for a cd, but it's awesome, and the album art is beautiful as well.

i went to birmingham for a few days to see some awesome friends and awesome bands (Wildhearts and Paint It Black).  and also to buy a shitload of CDs:

The Tim Version - "Decline of the Southern Gentleman"
Paint It Black - "New Lexicon"
Every Time I Die - "New Junk Aesthetic" (bonus tracks+dvd version)
*Biffy Clyro - "That Golden Rule" (single)
RX Bandits - "Mandala"
Johnny Foreigner - "Waited Up Til It Was Light"
Ginger - "The Great White Monkey: Live at Rugeley Rose Theatre"
65daysofstatic - "Hole" E.P.
Chuck Ragan - "Gold Country"
And So I Watch You From Afar - "And So I Watch You From Afar"
Marmaduke Duke - "The Magnificent Duke"
Castevet - "Summer Fences"
Frank Turner - "Poetry of the Deed"
Thrice - "Beggars"

*incidentally, if anyone has the itunes-only b-sides "eye lids" and "time jazz" and would be so kind as to send them to me, i'd do a backflip into a pool of custard with sheer joy (and send some cool shit in return...)

Dischord is seriously the best record label.  I just bought Q and Not U's "No Kill No Beep Beep" on vinyl, but with every vinyl purchase you get the album in mp3 form free.  I also bought (and currently am listening to) Bluetip's "Join Us".  And I finally bought Fugazi's "Instrument" on DVD.  I am so looking forward to watching that.

so yeah in response to my last post.

This is a 12" by Drowning with our Anchors, called You Can Never Go Home Again. I guess its like early 90's emo, i hear them called a cross between Still Life and Policy of Three a lot, which seems pretty apt.

Kidcrash/L'Antitem HEAVY NUGS AND HEADY CHUGS YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

love the kidcrash side, but im honestly not all about the l'antitem side. i dunno i've never really been able to get into them. not my thing i guess. its cool though the kidcrash side is so worth it.

The name of that band is Gnaw (http://www.myspace.com/gnaw666) and the album is out on Conspiracy Records (http://www.conspiracyrecords.com/store/store_detail.php?id=7373). I still can't bealive how heavy this thing is. The first song literally made me jump out of my seat and try to find the volume knob.
Here (http://brainwashed.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=7418&Itemid=64) is a pretty good review.

Slavestate is a remix/dub EP of a few old Godflesh songs and b sides. I haven't listened to it yet beacuse my record player died on me last week. If you like Godflesh you should check out that Transitional album too. It's by Dave Cochrane (ex-Head of David) and Kevin Laska and I think Justin Broadrick is in a few tracks.

Nautical Almanac - Melding Linearality

Quote
you can start it anywhere on the record, and the needle goes all over the place. start it on the inside, it's on the outside in like a minute, then back to the inside, then to the middle... it's insane. if you slightly bump the turntable, it completely changes speeds and locations. how this isn't a huge deal within musical history overall is beyond me. basically it does re-mixes of its self forever and ever and will NEVER sound the same twice. limited to 300, there's nothing like it.

Cadillac Blindside - "These Liquid Lungs: A Retrospective" (also from the banquet sale - kinda alkaline trio-ish emo-ey punk.  not amazing, but worth a lot more than the 2quid it cost!)

RCA re-issued my favorite album as a limited-edition double LP.  I ordered and am shaking until it gets here.
Edit (hopefully the image stays up now):
Got my copy in and I'm shaking more.  Full on tremors!  This album is the most awesome thing ever.  Gatefold, embossed titles and restored, unobscured artwork, a remastered CD is included as well, and the mysterious "Track 10" is included (it was removed from the original release due to having quite a few samples of Timothy Leary that couldn't be approved at the time of the original pressing), even though the original joke "Is Track 10 missing?" is still printed on the sleeve.

I don't know of any other distros for that EP.  I'm pretty sure that pack came with a physical cd (there were a bunch of different packages being offered, adn I just read thru them quickly cause I had lab to run to right after buying it, but it seemed like there was a physical in addition to the download).  I'm certain it did come w/ a digital download the instant the payment went thru.

And, their shipping costs are totally ridiculous.  cost came to $22, shipping was $9.60, and I'm in the states.  They didn't offer anything cheaper (but they did offer more expensive)

ooh, that'll be awesome!  apparently they're recording with J. Robbins too!!!

although i gotta say i am fucked off at so many of my favourite bands joining P+P.  the whole anti-cd thing is annoying.  even if they include a cd in the vinyl, there's still the whole massive shipping costs, bulky packaging etc. to deal with.

i don't mind that vinyl's making a comeback, but the fact that some bands/labels are getting rid of CDs as a result is what annoys me.  why not do both?!
Title: Re: I do love a new purchase

Getting rid of CDs is just the absolute epitome of stupid. MUCH better to do as Constellation Records does and reward you for purchasing the more expensive vinyl by including the CD version with it. Vinyl is great as a fetish object, or for those that prefer the sound. However, the vast majority have much more use for a musical object that can be used in a large variety of portable devices, and can easily have the music contained within ripped to a computer. Vinyl does neither of these things.

a) You just described the .mp3.
b) A lot of turntables now have USB outputs, and using programs like Audacity, ripping vinyl to digital is frighteningly simple these days.

Some smaller bands that I've ordered LPs from have even just thrown in a CD-R with the tracks on it, obviously just for the intention of giving the buyer the music in a lossless digital format which they can then rip to their computer at the bitrate of their liking, or chuck in their car, or use as a coaster, or whatever, all without the additional cost to the artist have getting CDs pressed. I think it's a great idea. I don't need a proper CD if I'm just using it for the files on it, and I've already got the presentation object, in the vinyl.

Obviously another option is including a download link with vinyl sales. I prefer a CD because, as previously mentioned, it allows me to rip at the quality that I want.

I haven't bought any music recently because I'm awful. I did buy a whole bunch of Henry Rollins Spoken Word CDs though.

I am at home visiting my family for a little while. Naturally, I am bored. Here are some pictures of all the vinyl I bought over the summer. Notice the lovely blankets on the guestroom bed.

Group shot of some 7"s.

Closer photo of the Tigers Jaw EP on purple vinyl. It came with little foam animals! One is a rhino and one is a bird.

Tigers Jaw self-titled full length. The album sleeve is handmade! Pretty cool.

You and Me and the Mountain etched! Bonus picture of the sleeve (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v129/jesusvsthepolice/maps.jpg).

Marie by Romance of Young Tigers. Pretty stunning album with amazing artwork. The extra posters that came with it are hanging on the wall at my actual house.

Cosmo's Factory!

Had a pretty nice talk about the Husker Doodles with the dude who was working at the store where I bought this.

Terrorhawk on white and yellow marbley vinyl with new covert art by Marc Paffi.

White Light/White Heat/White Vinyl.

Colossal! You can't really tell by the picture, but the vinyl is a really pretty wine colour.

Sharks Keep Moving's Desert Strings and Drifters on orange with black splash! I was pretty happy to snag this.

Yeah, that's right. I hugged this record to my chest when it came in the mail. It is the first thing I ever won on eBay.

been on a psych/experimental kick lately, a couple albums purchased

Plankton Wat- Dawn of the Golden Eternity

Dragon Turtle-  Almanac

Almanac is quickly reaching the top albums of this year status.  Great atmospheric psych folk, but so much more full sounding than most psych albums.  Sounds like Eno could have produced it.   I've been championing this album to a couple friends, but they aren't trying to hear it because the band name is fucking Dragon Turtle.   Stream on La-soc.com it's a beautiful album.   Double gatefold split colored and splattered vinyl, great packaging.   I'll try and upload a photo soon as I get my camera fixed....

-Ted Leo & The Pharamacists - "Shake The Sheets"

i ordered the cd of this off amazon the other day.  i'd never heard any of their stuff but had heard the name being thrown about, and after a quick look on youtube, one listen each of "me and mia" and "little dawn" were enough for me to go and order the album immediately!

Invested heavily in a couple local stores (Electric Fetus and Treehouse Records, if you live in Minneapolis and were wondering) with the following purchases:

Low - Things We Lost in the Fire
Fugazi - Instrument Soundtrack
GY!BE - Lift Yr. Skinny Fists like Antennas to Heaven!
GY!BE - Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada EP
Tortoise - Beacons of Ancestorship
Boris - Heavy Rock Hits Vol. 2 7"
Boris - Heavy Rock Hits Vol. 3 7"

I was also given a bunch of used vinyl for Christmas, including Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life and The Kronos Quartet Plays Thelonius Monk.

picked up the newest manic street preachers record ("journal for plague lovers"), and "secrets and lies" the second full-length by an awesome welsh stoner-metal/hardcore band called Taint.  they were both sorta bought as the result of "oh, i have some hmv vouchers.... and there's fuck all i want in this shop atm... well... these'll do." and after a listen each, i was thrilled.  badass albums!

Misereatur:

Good pick on the Godflesh.  Timely too, considering they reunion show they'll be playing at Hellfest this year.  Her's hoping it lead to a new album/wider touring schedule.  I was supposed to see thme open for Skinny Puppy in the 90s, but there were some...uh...issues with them getting into Canada.

Hellfest is in June, right? So there's actually a good chance I can go.

All those days building tents would come into good use.

Also pagebreak, so here are some records from last month:

Thanks!  I'm just starting to dip my toes into jazz, and (as typical) I'm beginning with the non-traditional forms: free jazz, Davis' electric period, John Zorn's omnivorous revisions...

Happily I got The Wire Primers (http://www.thewire.co.uk/shop/items/484/) for Christmas, which not only has a primer on free jazz in general, but separate primers on Ornette and Sun Ra.  I suspect I'll be purchasing more in the near future.

I'm not very hardcore in to jazz (I've only heard Coltrane, Davis, and Hancock so far, but I have a bunch of the classics on m,y computer, unlistened to), but that album is sheer brilliance.

Man, good news/better news/bad news.

Good news is I found an original copy of KMFDM's Naive—not the remixed album with the green cover, not Metropolis’ reissue but the long-deleted one with the offending “O Fortuna” sample intact.  Better news is that it was in a used bin priced at $5 by someone who didn't realize how sought-after that disc is (minus an extra 20% off for Record Store Day). Fucking A!

Bad news is that the second half of the album won't play at all in my MacBook and plays with very noticeable distortion on my desktop PC.  There are no obvious scratches and it plays fine on my stereo, but I can't rip the damn thing to mp3 at all.  And since this is probably a once-in-a-decade find it's not like I'm gonna trade it in for a refund or replacement.

I was all like, "WOOOOO! .... ... Aw, shit."

Japandroids - Art Czars 7"
Dum Dum Girls - Jail La La 7"

I was sorely tempted by the new Gogol Bordello single - IT WAS ON LIME GREEN VINYL - but I spent that money on a pizza instead.

And I also got an Echo & the Bunnymen CD fer cheap.

Saturday, I went both normal vinyl shopping, and to a used record sale at my local college's radio station (WJJW). I brought $30 expecting to maybe get three or four things, but um..ended up leaving with 35 records for $25. Most of them were promos, as well. I mostly ended up grabbing stuff that either sounded like it might be interesting, or had a weird/funny title/cover. Awesome. Total haul: 38 records, $41 spent.

Singles:
Dio - "The Last In Line" (12")
Gang Green - "We'll Give It To You" b/w "Skate To Hell" 12" (best find of the day, imo)
REM - "Orange Crush" 12" (orange vinyl)
Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Give It Away" 12"
Jamiroquai - "Emergency on Planet Earth" 12"
Dis N' Dat - "Dis N' Dat" b/w "Hotel Motel" 12"
Regatta 69 - "Simple Simon" 7"
Morrissey - "Ouija Board, Ouija Board" 12" + "Suedehead" 12"
Ted Nugent - "She Drives Me Crazy" 12"
Ma$e - "From Scratch" 12"
Orgy - "Opticon" 2x12" (picked up for a friend)
Pigeon John - "Is Clueless" 12"

LPs:
Polar Bear Club - "Sometimes Things Just Disappear" (green marble)
Nathan Maxwell & The Original Bunny Gang - "White Rabbit" (white)
Broadway Calls - "Good Views, Bad News" (blue marble)
Todd Rundgren - "Healing" (for a friend)
Psychedelic Furs - "Should God Forget" + "Book Of Days" (for same friend)
Lou Reed - "Metal Music Machine"
Yall So Stupid - "Van Full Of Pakistans" (for group & album name)
Les Paul - "The Genius Of Les Paul"
Ramones - "End Of The Century" (German pressing) + "Too Tough To Die"
Pagan Babies - "Next" (Note written on the cover: "Philadelphia's BEST hardcore")
Toots & The Maytals - "In The Dark"
Ric Ocasek - "Beatitude"
Iggy Pop - "Instinct" + "New Values"
Diamond Head - "Borrowed Time"
Buddy Guy - "This Is Buddy Guy!"
Chicago - "Chicago Transit Authority"
Paul McCartney - "McCartney"
Taj Mahal - "Satisfied N' Tickled Too"
Stan Getz - "Children Of The World" (album art by Charles Schulz of Peanuts fame...it's Schroder on piano and Snoopy playing a sax) + "The Master"
Rolling Stones - "Black & Blue"
Professor Longhair - "Live On The Queen Mary"

The one thing they didn't have, and I really, really want, is Getz's "Recorded Fall 1961" with Bob Brookmayer. I came upon a copy in a used store in Boston last month, but didn't have the money on me for it. Goddammit.

Thanks to all manner of sales, discount stuff i've never gotten round to using, and savvy price-hunting online, i've picked up quite a haul in the last few weeks...

Helms Alee - "Night Terror"
Stove Bredsky - "The Black Ribbon Award"
Former Cell Mates - "Who's Dead and What's to Pay?"
I Adapt - "Chainlike Burden"
Much the Same - "Survive"
Isis - "Celestial"
Cave In - "Planets of Old"
The Ocean - "Heliocentric"
65daysofstatic - "We Were Exploding Anyway"
The Amistad - "Kept Under by a Generation of Ghosts"
OK Pilot - "Ok Pilot EP"
Psyched to Die - "Year One"
House Boat - "The Delaware Octopus"
The Steinways - "Gorilla Marketing"
The Flatliners - "Cavalcade"
Cancer Bats - "Bears, Mayors, Scraps & Bones"
The Computers - "You Can't Hide from The Computers"
The Legacy - "Solitude EP"
Don Caballero - "World Class Listening Problem"
Rise & Fall - "Our Circle Is Vicious"
The Menzingers - "Chamberlain Waits"
Samiam - "Whatever's Got You Down"
Scream Hello - "Everything Is Always Still Happening"

I'm also waiting on four J Church albums, an album and an EP by Fifth Hour Hero and a Small Brown Bike EP to arrive from No Idea.  Also, my boss gave me a copy of his band's blues album today too.

Incidentally, if anyone wants any of the less ridiculously easy-to-find things from that list upping on the mf! thread, just give me a shout and i'll see what i can do.

You can tell it was on purpuse!  :-D Yey for openmindness!

I love Kent, it's my favorite non-metal band. I'm one of those who thinks their music is pretty dark at least for the genre(s) it stands for (if you understand their lyrics you might probably agree). Röd is in my top three of their albums, amazing "psychedelic electronica".

How is the new Wintersleep? Haven't had a chance to give it a listen yet.

I was a bit worried after I saw them live because the two songs they played didn't sound too good, but after a few listens the album grew on me. Still think their previous work is better though.

The long story:  I was about 13 when I found T.S.O.L.'s Dance With Me album in a record store in Omaha.  I bought it for two reasons --the cover and because I knew some older kids listened to them.   I say without exaggeration that it was an album that not only blew my mind, but literally shaped the direction my life has been going for the last two and a half decades.   I think it is one of the best overall albums ever put together.  Every single song is a winner --even though some of them are very strange.  I've bought it on vinyl (stolen),  cassette tape (lost), CD (in the house somewhere), and paid to download it off of iTunes.

Needless to say, being a huge fan and a guitar player, I've been very happy that in the last couple of years T.S.O.L.'s guitarist Ron Emory has been getting some of the props he deserves as a very talented musician.  So a couple of months ago, I'm on the Fender website and I'm checking out the artists.  A few links later and I'm on Ron Emory's website and I proceed to order the pre-release of his CD and DVD.    Then I pretty much forgot about it.   But I check the mailbox when I get home from work and there is my forgotten CD/DVD in the mailbox.   I open it up and it's totally signed with a big thanks from Ron.     Very cool (and the album, so far, is excellent).

TL;DR   Ron Emory's new album and DVD showed up today unexpectedly signed by Ron.

Picked up the new Hold Steady album, "Heaven Is Whenever" this morning, on the strength of the songs on their myspace.  The only one of theirs I'd heard before was "Stay Positive" which was alright, but the vocalist's tendency to talk more than sing, and the slightly dodgy production (keyboards and guitars panned hard opposite directions on a couple of tracks was just disorientating, and not in a good way...) sorta spoilt it a bit for me.  They've fixed both problems this time though.  Dude rocks some melody, and the production is HUGE.  Me likey.

Omar Rodriguez Lopez & John Frusciante (http://omardigital.rodriguezlopezproductions.com/album/omar-rodriguez-lopez-john-frusciante)

Its all free, but I donated a few dollars for both albums. Its pretty neat stuff.

I was on a No Idea streak the past few weeks:

The Draft - In A Million Pieces (lavender vinyl)
The Ergs/Measure [sa]- split (both 7"s, brown vinyl)
The Methadones - Gary Glitter EP
I also added the free random 7" to my cart and the order hasn't shown up yet, so no clue what it is! Also got a blue Hot Water Music shirt.

I also hit up the Vinyl Collective archive auction and currently have high bid on the following:
Reggie and the Full Effect/Koufax split
Teenage Bottlerocket/Broadway Calls split (yellow w/ black splatter)

Good choice on The Arusha Accord! I have their full length, Echo Verses, which in some ways isn't as good as Nightmares of the Ocean, I think mostly due to the over-glossy production. Unfortunately they're going on indefinite hiatus starting after their last gig, which is in a week or so  :-(

Yeah, they announced it on their official Facebook page a week or so ago, just confirmed today that they'll be playing one last show near Reading then giving it a rest for a while.

Quote
So just to clarify for those of you that weren't at Ghostfest and have heard various rumours, The Arusha Accord are not splitting up. We are going on a long break as of after Brutal Assault festival so we can go and pursue other areas of our lives that we haven't had the chance to do whilst being skint playing tech metal! We have started writing again though and we will be back when the time is right.

I got this 3" mini CD Sunday at  what was probably the coolest show I've been to all summer.  It was an extremely chill show, in the basement of a house occupied by one of three bands playing, Kitten Forever.

The band I went to see, and whose CD I bought, was Myths. Myths are from Vancouver, BC.  Their myspace is here: http://www.myspace.com/mythsband (http://www.myspace.com/mythsband)

Myths combine a lot of elements of music I'm really into right now. They have severe, nearly fascistic coldwave beats, spazzy noise electronics, multi-layered textural sounds, and shouted echoey vocals.  Some of what I heard recorded and assumed was effect placed on vocal tracks turned out to be the interplay between the two bandmates, both of whom sing and control various synths and beatmachines. Because of this vocal approach, the band also kind of reminds me of the Blood Brothers.

Anyway, I'm excited about this group. I bought their mini CD. They're touring like mad right now and I saw them for free, so if you get the chance yrself I highly recommend it.

Got in the mail from Amazon on Friday:

Kid Cudi - Man on the Moon: the End of Days
the Black Keys - Rubber Factory
Mumford & Sons - Sigh No More

Purchased at Princeton Record Exchange in Princeton NJ yesterday:

Arcade Fire - the Suburbs
Broken Social Scene - Forgiveness Rock Record

All on vinyl.  All were new except the Dylan & Beatles.  I'm now effectively poor. :(

The Autumn Defense - Circles (actually I got that from the Wilco merch tent..)

New Exodus. I'd recommend it.

Seriously, how did Anthrax ever get nominated to be part of 'the big four' of trash metal while Exodus was around?

Hey UK folk, what's a good place to buy records online that you know... ships to the UK?

I really just want a vinyl copy of DISCO2, but apparently you can only get that in the US.

I find this upsetting.

The one that came out this year.  The things I've heard about what Justin Broadrick did with the mix have been well, mixed, but I trust him to not go back and ruin his old classics

When you listen to them tell me if it's worth it because I want to get it.

From what I can tell, the remastered remix of Streetcleaner isn't much different than the original.  I fancy the bass sounds slightly less crunchy, but that could just be my imagination

As for the bells and whistles that come along with it, they're all right.  The "extended liner notes" aren't really that extended at all, they just include an essay about how great and influential Streetcleaner is and all that.

The disk of bonus material is pretty cool, it has a few "original unreleased" mixes that sound similar to the versions that made it into the album, except with much less bass presence.  The highlights of the disk are the two live tracks and rehearsal demos, since Justin Broadrick's guitar playing with Godflesh involved lots of improvisation with harmonics and feedback, and they all sound different than the album versions.  The 12-minute version of 'Pulp' is particularly epic

All said and done, I'd say that the Streetcleaner remaster is absolutely worth getting if you don't already have a hard copy of the album (which I for one didn't 'til I got it).  If you already do I'd say it's not necessary, unless you are big on Godflesh completion-ism

In unrelated news, yesterday I found a used record store right by the university campus and promptly bought Red Medicine by Fugazi, The S.V.E.S.T. side of the S.V.E.S.T. - Deathspell Omega split, and Nespithe by Demilich all for 14 dollars.  It was a good day

but CHECK THIS OUT

it's an Oren Ambarchi LP my girlfriend stumbled upon while she perused the Animal Collective section and saw that it was misplaced. It's single-sided, and on the side without the sounds there are dragons etched in. as a bonus, it's a pretty good album! it's way more minimalist than Grapes From the Estate, which I dig a lot

it's a little tough to prove with my cell phone camera but trust me you guys it is so awesome

Title: Re: I do love a new purchase
Post by: KvP on 07 Oct 2010, 00:28
There's nothing to explain?

I mean, the most succinct way to say it is that if you like Tangerine Dream and Boards of Canada, you're going to like it. They're basically Boards with more live instrumentation. Being just like Boards is a lot harder than it might seem, but the value of that quality is also somewhat inflated by the infrequency of that group's output (their last EP dropped in '06). If you don't like it, you don't like it.

Title: Re: I do love a new purchase
Post by: Wasteroo on 07 Oct 2010, 00:39
I guess it's just a random taste anomaly of mine, because I love Tangerine Dream and Boards of Canada. Honestly, Solar Bears (except for Dolls) just doesn't sound very BoC-ey to me at all. at most I would say that they kind of sound like BoC without all the dark ambiance and intensity and shatter-your-mind drops

Anyone any experience with shipping overseas with Economy Air Mail? I'm really considering getting this LP of Throbbing Gristle's Heathen Earth, but it ships from Japan. I think it's worth it, though - second press and pretty good condition, and it's around 60 dollars with shipping. It's just that that's the best shipping option they have, and I'm not convinced it's safe.

I have once or twice, generally prefer EMS but sometimes people won't offer it.  I've never had any packages lost or damaged, so in my experience it's been fine.

Just got a shitload of vintage vinyl from my parents attic.  Highlights:

The Best of Earth, Wind, and Fire, Vol. 1. - Earth, Wind, and Fire
Summertime Dream - Gordon Lightfoot
and an epic folk/bluegrass record entitled "The Moose Wallow Ramblers", by a band with the same name

Also just purchased

The Tyranny of Distance - Ted Leo and The Pharmacists
Shake the Sheets - Ted Leo and The Pharmacists

and I have been listening the shit out of both of them.  TED LEO IS SO GOOD.

Neghantil - 1990-1996. I will admit, I bought this mostly for the design of it, but the music is pretty good too. Weird sort of post-industrial stuff. That small metal thing thing is a lapel pin, and it also comes with six collage prints. It's a physical media fetishist's dream.

-Starfucker - Reptilians clear vinyl (with free dl code)
-Starfucker poster (which I'm bringing to the gig in April and hopefully getting them to sign)
-Joan of Arc - Boo Human promo CD
-Asobi Seksu poster
-Polyvinyl sampler playlist "Winston's Essentials" free dl

Posters are crazy cheap though, and they're doing BOGOF CDs at the moment...very tempting.

Winston's Essentials is pretty good, some nice tracks on there (especially one from Somone Still Loves Your Boris Yeltsin's newest album).

Deerhoof sticker now resides on my guitar case, indiecred please.

Kayo Dot - Dowsing Anemone with Copper Tongue
Alison's Halo - Dozen
Beau Navire - Life Moves

Here are some crappy backwards laptop pictures of some things I have picked up.

Elfin Saddle's Wurld. Easily the coolest thing I have bought recently. This 10" accompanies the DVD release of the film Wurld which is pretty amazing. You can read more about it here (http://cstrecords.com/cst069/).

LP by a Halifax/Montréal band called Play Guitar. Dumb name but a great band. Bob Weston mastered it!

Some 7"s from a Toronto-by-way-of-Ottawa band called METZ (http://www.myspace.com/metztheband). Easily one of the best bands going in Canada right now. The best live show I have seen in the past year.

LP by a dude called Electroluminescent. Saw him with Women a couple months ago. He's got a cool moustache.

Bonus 7" that came with Public Strain pre-orders, and split 7" of Bruce Peninsula with Muskox/The Gertrudes with PS I Love You. Really good version of Bruce P.'s "Shanty Song".

Canadian music!

I mean compared to others playing that style of metalcore (lol Acacia Strain) this is good, but Ion D is on a whole other level compared to all that garbage. I think nothing touches Breathing Is Irrelevant, and especially Solace, so even though the last one was okay, I just hate that they took that direction. Also, nothing compares to Gab on vocals...dude is out of this world.

I don't have a big trouble with metalcore than most people usually have, there's good metalcore, Burst being a major example.
Even if you were right that the other ones are better, then I even more happy that I loved this one, it means that I will never feel dissapointed with their discography. And Cursed is cool man... mkay.
I fail to see something going wrong with Minus The Herd and what I've heard from Cursed, the songwritting is awesome, they actually know how to use breakdowns without being a huge fucking cliche, the vocals suits the music fine (I don't know the other vocalist so I think I'm very objective here), Very technical without loosing feeling (and I usually HATE technical/progressive music), the production and the bassy sound is just gorgeous...etc

It seems too many people are ditching metalcore (and other things that end with core except hardcore or grindcore) just because of the name, which is quite sad. Those guys totally miss bands like The Human Abstract, Born Of Osiris, Burst, War From A Harlots Mouth, Heaven Shall Burn, El Comer Ocho... And the list is getting bigger with time.

Has anyone received their copy of Take Care, Take Care, Take Care yet?  I thought pre-orders were typically shipped so they arrive on the release day of the record...

As appears to more and more be the case, not with vinyl.

Still waiting on the new Red City Radio LP (came out cd/digital in February), and the new Small Brown Bike that came out a two weeks ago.

Live ORL Group album "You're Welcome". Every release makes me realise why Omar's blend of psychadelic, experimental rock is just wonderful on the ears.

Best $1 you could hope to spend at Joyful Noise. An EP made in an abandoned church, I think. Never listened to Hermit Thrushes before, but they seem pretty tight. Love the percussion.

Yeah so more Omar. Dirt cheap and immersive & thrilling. Ximena Sariñana has an amazing voice. Female fronted jazz/prog/fusion? Incredible.

(I finally got this a couple weeks ago so this is late I know but) this is a beautifully done release.  I especially like the caramel colored second disc with the floor board etching on the backside.

Jon Snodgrass & Friends - Tri-State Record

On red + white, limited to 95. Wasn't interested until I saw Brandon from Teenage Bottlerocket and Chris Wollard were involved.

edit: I got this over the weekend. It is NOT half and half as I was expecting. Clear vinyl, with red/white/black splatter. One of the coolest records I've ever seen. And "Campaign Song '93" with Chris Wollard and the Ship Thieves backing is AWESOME.

Trying to decide here..

I've got an email from No Idea about a new O Pioneers!!!/Andrew Jackson Jihad split 9". I really, REALLY like O Pioneers, but couldn't care less about AJJ. Worth the $7? The digital download comes with like 20 bonus live tracks.
