A major fun peddler from our childhoods has passed (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3174096)

Whoa, I didn't even know there was a Duke Nukem game in development. I thought Duke Nukem 3D was the last game they were making. And Apogee is definitely a great gaming company; growing up I had like four of those 100 PC Game collections or whatever, and looking back a whole lot of the good games on thsoe discs were made by Apogee: Crystal Caves, Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure, Secret Agent, Major Stryker, Rise of the Triad, Wolfenstein, Blake Stone, Hocus Pocus, Math Rescue, Word Rescue, Halloween Harry... ah, good times.
Fun comparison, look at how far the Duke Nukem franchise went from the original game. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duke_Nukem_(computer_game))

They've been making (and scrapping and restarting) DNF since at least the late 90s. Kind of like what Valve did with TF2, but at least they released other games in the meantime (and finally finished the game). 3D Realms released, what, a few phone ports of Duke Nukem 3D and the two Serious Sam games in the last 10 years?
As a side note, 'DNF' is also an auto racing term for Did Not Finish.
-
Ah tis a sad, sad day. I remember more than a decade ago when this game was announced and then not much more than a decade ago when the jokes about how delayed it was began. Since then it has always been "that game in development." DNF was in development pretty much my entire life as a gamer and while I was never all that excited for it and never honestly thought it would come out, it's still sad to see it officially dead. Hats off to dragging it out as long as possible guys!
-
Duke Nukem Forever isn't necessarily dead, just 3D Realms. Take-Two are adamant about retaining the publishing rights. They'll probably pawn it off to someone capable of completing it.
-
Considering that Apogee owns the IP rights, I think it's up to them.
-
Apogee = 3D Realms. There's a separate "Apogee" company who was working on 2D Duke games, I don't know what the status of that is. But yeah, Apogee the venerable developer is dissolved.
-
I'm pretty sure that the 2D Apogee is retaining the rights to the IP
-
It's probable that they'll retain rights to the games they're currently making, but considering that 3D Realms was working on DNF far (far far) longer than the new 2D Apogee has existed, I'd assume the IP itself is in a state of flux at the moment. Take2 probably has all the power here, they could take the existing assets (you can see some in-engine renders from former Black Isle artist Tramell "T-Ray" Isaac here (http://www.barakastudios.com/artist/isaac/dnf_shot0001.jpg), here (http://www.barakastudios.com/artist/isaac/dnf_shot0002.jpg), here (http://www.barakastudios.com/artist/isaac/dnf_shot0004.jpg) and here (http://www.barakastudios.com/artist/isaac/dnf_shot0003.jpg)) and pass them off to a different studio to finish. That seems reasonable.

Remind me again why this game was apparently impossible to complete?
-
Duke Nukem Forever was like trying to shove a baseball down an elderly dying man's throat: you could have probably squeezed a golf ball down there, but that baseball is going to kill him.
And nobody likes to dig baseballs out of dead people.
-
Remind me again why this game was apparently impossible to complete?
Incompetence and a bit of Shenmue syndrome; they made a bunch of grandiose claims about how interactive and varied everything was going to be when in reality they hadn't even figured out what engine they should be using to try accomplishing that. It was like the exact opposite route the guys who made Serious Sam (all 10 of them!) took.
-
Speaking of which, why hasn't anyone made a thread about Serious Sam 3?
geez, guys.
I'm hoping Take-Two doesn't cancel the project. At most, put it on hold. I can't possibly imagine what would happen to the DN community if they waited for a game since the precambrian era and it got cancelled.

Gameplay Footage Leaked (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/316675.html?playlist=featured).

Always bet on Duke.
-
Ah, it just wouldn't be a Duke Nukem game without shameless use of a strip club.
-
28 HD screenies and the entire plot of the game leaked (http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/news/46948/Duke-Nukem-Forever-28-Hi-Res-Screenshots-Entire-Plot-Leaked).
Don't think this game is ever coming out!
-
Then it's true. Duke Nukem Forever was shot between the eyes before the public unveiling. Now all we can do is stare at the very pretty corpse.
-
well, I'll be damn-diggity doo (http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh191/Wondersaunahotpants/godmode_comic_on_halo_3.jpg)

Then what does this (http://twitter.com/ApogeeSoftware/status/1747381530) refer to!?

They did come out with a DS Duke Nukem

There are women trying out for this thing.

Poor bastard on preorder for 11 years...

Kotaku has "inside sources" that say DN:F is being revived at Gearbox. VG247's founder backs up the rumor. Looks like it's back on.
Given the status of Aliens: Colonial Marines, however, it could still languish in development hell.
-
The same Gearbox that made the two "meh" Half-Life expansion packs?
-
The same Gearbox that made two pretty good HL1 expansions(I loved Opposing Force), the pinnacle of WW2 FPSes, Brothers in Arms, and Borderlands which was very fun, if a bit flawed (especially on the PC end).
-
and Borderlands which was very fun, if a bit flawed (especially on the PC end).
The part that has me worried. There are enough half-assed ports of console games to PC as it is. :(
Opposing Force was okay, but Blue Shift was way too short.
-
borderlands was seriously flawed no matter what system you played it on. i never got bored of a game so fast.
-
... Halo PC port?
:-P
