Title: gnashville tennessee
Post by: onefineday on 07 May 2009, 13:53
hey in an attempt to find places to go/hangouts around town (just moved here from IL), i figured i might ask on the threads here...technically i'm in goodlettsville, in the middle of the country (i.e. horses next door, horrible allergies, and a lawn that looks like a driving range...oh yeah, a turkey literally crossed the road earlier today.)  i'm like 20 minutes from downtown nashy.  just kinda getting bored, so was wondering if anyone knew good hangouts or whatever.  my brother and i are looking to find a drummer to make kickass indierock music with, so any venues around the area you might know of (dive bars included), seriously holler at me.

wasn't sure if this was the right thread, i've been away from the forums for a while, and the names of the forums are less-than-decipherable.

I've never been to Tennessee.

I guess it's still okay though.

Step 1: Actually go into Nashville

Seriously, if you're not willing to consider this option, then there's not a lot we can do to help, most of us not living in Tennessee.

I drove through it Saturday.  Man I get tired of I-40

True Story:  I was driving through it once (I guess about 1990) and was flipping through the radio stations.  It was like: Country, Country, Country, Country, HOLY SHIT THAT'S THE BAD BRAINS!!!  It was one of the best radio stations I ever heard (KPOI in Hawaii in the mid-nineties was the best, WHFS in the 80's out of Baltimore was really good too, as was my University Radio Station-- Not that anyone cares.)

Cliff's Notes: I heard a good radio station in Nashville once.

Go into Nashville. You really don't need much more advice than that. 80% of the people there are artists in some form, and that guess is at a low end.

That being said, the village is a great place to hang out, since there's a lot of college kids who happen to be indie persons. It is a good place! My favourite happens to be Fido's, the coffeeshop. I always stop in there.

Step 3: walk 100 meters

You have to go downtown Nashville to find them.

Also, WHFS is/was indeed a great radio station.  I listened to it when I lived in MD.  So someone does care.

Also, WHFS is/was indeed a great radio station.

HFS went Spanish Language a couple of years ago.  Like, at lunchtime one day.

Seriously.

I moved away from the D.C. Area for about ten years (returning in 2001) and though it was around (with a much bigger broadcast area! I used to know the exact intersection in Northern Virginia when the radio in my ancient Toyota would pick it up) it wasn't as good as it was in the late 80s when it really was underground radio.

But yeah, one morning everything was cool with HFS, and then all of a sudden they started playing shit in Spanish.  Boom!  Total reformat in the space of two minutes.   Happened to the local 'alternative' station where I'm living now too (not that it was really all that alternative.)   One day they came on and said "Next week, this is going to be an 'urban' station.  We feel it will better serve the market."

As a totally unrelated side note, Dave Smalley works for the parent company of our local radio, and all we have is Country, Classic Rock, and Urban in our local market.   You'd think we'd be able to get something a little better, right?   Dave Smalley for crying out loud!
