Title: Let's say positive things about our jobs!
Post by: allison on 12 May 2009, 07:17
At my job I have to cut off people's power, which can be pretty depressing. On the bright side I am in very close proximity to both coffee and the bathroom.

What do you like about your job?

I like that I work right on the water.  If I stand up, I can see the harbor and the ships that dock nearby right out the window.  It's nice.

It gives me money.
It has internet access.
I get to be ironic and cynical and be thought of as funny or truthful.

I get to drink as much coffee and tea as I want, and I get a ridiculous discount on all kinds of baked goods. A high quality bread for 3 kr (which google tells me is the same as $0.46 and £0.3) is more than acceptable. Also I mostly just stand around talking to my friend who works in the store right next to my workplace.

Actually that should read "If I choose to start work at 9".

Everyone on campus automatically thinks I'm cool. Also we get free beverages and there is a desk and a computer in the back and we have boxes to store our stuff in so it is essentially a forward base of operations on campus for me.
Also I get to control the music in the Student Life Centre.

But I am pretty desperate and will start applying at fast food places soon.

Also, I can take days off pretty much whenever I want.

The pay kicks ass.

Girls instantly like me more because of my job.

I'm a student. It's pretty rad. I get access to every university library in the state (and one out of it iirc) so I have access to all sorts of esoteric books that I wouldn't even know existed otherwise (current reading: Tensors, Differential Forms and Variational Principles by Lovelock and Rund) and I have access to a huge range of journals and journal searching tools. I have a really flexible schedule though this does let me slack off more than I should. I hang around with good people and I get to learn all kinds of interesting things.

In the summer I will be working for a few weeks programming intranet sites for a large Norwegian oil company. The pay is great, the other workers are really nice, there are free drinks, a really comfy seat and I'll be doing something I love.

I also go to school, and have pretty much the same feelings as Jens on that. Although in a few weeks I'll be in 6th year so everything might change.

I get to tell people how awesome it is to be a student in Edinburgh, show them where they'll be hanging out, walk around outside in the sun, and I get to make cheesy jokes about life in Scotland in general to people who for some reason think these jokes are funny. I also get to attend guest lectures, and tell people where to sit. Then I get to run around with a microphone and listen to interesting people talking about interesting things.

I also get paid really well.

Being a student tour guide kicks ass.

Yes we are you dolt. We're just not affected as much because we're not in the EU.

We're as affected of this crisis as we are of the swine flu: People are worried and someone has heard that someone else is maybe affected by it, but no one really knows anything or anyone that is, and nothing has changed in their own lives (yet).

On Monday mornings, there are generally about four students who come into the Writing Lab, and there are four of us on duty.  So I get paid $31.50 primarily to sit and read / chat with my coworkers for three hours.

It's also pretty cool when I actually help students, 'cause I'm frequently reading narrative essays, which means I get to read about cool things they've done.  Then I get to try out firsthand all the stuff we're talking about in my comp theory class.  And sometimes students will choose to work with me all quarter, which is really gratifying--it means they think I'm helpful! (I hope.)

I get a wicked discount on art supplies, it's somewhat related to my degree, I like everyone who works here, I like a lot of the people who shop here regularly, the people who live down here are really interesting (read: kind of weird), and I usually have a good time. It's not very stressful, the pay is ok, I get vatation time (at some point), and there are options for health, dental, and vision. (They aren't great, but at least they're there.)

So yeah, I like my job. I don't want to stay here forever, but I'm content right now.

It is on campus, so I can get in a couple hour shifts between classes and not have to go to work separate from the rest of my day!
A lot of the time I get to sit around and get paid to get my school work done!
When I do real work, it is hella physical, so my arms are BUFF!
I am one of the most experienced people there, so all my co-workers follow my lead. It's good to be in charge!

I'm currently back to being a student for a bit, but pretty soon I will be interning with these guys (http://www.smh.com.au/). If I don't like that job, then I'll basically have to give up on the whole idea of Being A Journalist.

Also, because I've worked a large number of jobs I'm going to summarise their perks.

Fishmonger - Free* prawns, smoked salmon.
Telemarketer - I was selling carpet cleaning. No redeeming features whatsoever.
Legal clerk - Got paid a fair bit to visit courts, file stuff, and read court transcripts. Some transcripts are actually pretty entertaining.
Cinema Usher - Free movies!
Numerous cafe jobs - Drinking shitloads of coffee. Most of my co-workers were pretty awesome. Free food, also.
Stacking shelves - Fucking terrible. I once made a nest in the manchester department, though, and had a lovely nap.
Musician - Occasionally I get paid for DJing or playing trumpet at things (not so much any more, too busy with night school). Last time I got paid to go to a festival over new years. Also, free booze is a major perk of playing gigs.
Scientist - All the ethanol you can drink. Freezing stuff for fun. Doing research that actually matters. No dress code, except for wearing a lab-coat!
Communications officer - Worked from home most of the time, writing newsletter articles for a few research groups. Well paid, easy work.
Staff writer at a magazine - Just an internship, but I got to write about a whole bunch of interesting science stuff, which has lead to a bit of freelancing.

*ie. stolen.

I don't have a real job anymore. My job consists of hanging around with friends, watching movies and occasionally painting some miniatures. I can also go grab food whenever I want and eat it in my lab. We get free pizza every friday during the normal school year.

The best thing about my current job is that I am at last in a management position, and work for a boss I genuinely like. I am no longer covered in secondhand coal dust, either, and I have lost a little weight.

As someone previously mentioned, having a job at all is pretty aces right now. I was jobless for about two months in late 2008. That, for the record, sucked.

At my job, I get to overhear bits of other people's conversations with customers, so we write down the best quotes. There's a lot of "No sir, I wasn't calling you stupid" and "no ma'am I can't overnight a credit card to Mongolia. Unless you pay for my flight, in which yes! I will see you soon" Also, I learned a lot of really helpful information about credit and banking so hopefully my credit in the future will be awesome (it is shit right now still)

That's not a recession, that's a wee blip. When the unemployment rate has doubled in six months and will double again by Christmas (one in four, baby!) and people start emigrating, then you've got a recession. The recession is the only thing that Ireland are world champions at.

The best thing about my future job is that the hours are very good and there's a lot of freedom. The bad thing is that it's the dole.

Yeah agreed, the economy has it's ups and downs, and right now it's pretty far down, but if you compare Norway to most countries we are not even close to mentioning the word recession. Economy magazines and such have declared Norway the best country to be in during a recession because we will hardly notice anything.

I just got a job for this fall! As a student assistant, in a kind of basic course in IT, so it's basically sitting around helping people with HTML, CSS, JSP and some MySQL, which I enjoy (minus, you know, JSP). And the awesome part is that a lot of the people don't bother showing up to get help, so I can basically sit around and do my own school work a lot of the time. 100 hours, ~19USD per hour. Sweet.

Another sweet part of my summer job is that although it's super boring, it pays okay. About 21USD an hour now, I think. Which isn't a lot, but pretty decent.

1. I have a job. I am not at all worried about being laid off because of recession things.

2. I do not have to be at work until 1 pm, so I can stay up late and sleep in late.

3. When I talk, people shut up and listen. When I say things should get done a certain way, that is the way they are done.

4. People ask me for my opinion on things, then actually listen and act upon what I have to say.

5. I have 11 direct reports that are becoming increasingly comfortable with me as their supervisor, which is making my life so much easier.

6. My job makes me feel intelligent.

I could keep going for a while.

Yeah I'm pretty glad to have a job, and in particular to have my job because (sorry Gemm!) working in a supermarket is awesome. It requires no skill beyond small talk and making change, the hours are flexible and fit comfortably around college, I get paid almost twice what I got paid in my last job (enough of an increase that even the loss of my own office and phone doesn't dull the gloss) and when I leave for university I will be able to transfer over or just come back whenever I feel like it and they will continue to pay me at full rate.

My shifts fall so that I get five days off in a row, but I still work enough hours a week that I can save up and also buy awesome things. I get a discount on anything we sell which my parents take in lieu of paying rent. My colleagues are generally friendly and being forced to talk to people for twelve hours a week means that I am much more confident and also have finally learnt to banter coolly without being rude to anyone. My uniform is comfortable (althoug soon it will be purple) and when I get really bored I get to go round the shop unshopping all the things people abandoned. Perhaps I have low expectations but even after nine months working there I can't fault my job.

Oh oh another positive thing about my job is that even though I make $2.13 an hour and by Georgia state law when I don't make up to $6.50 in tips my boss is supposed to comp me the rest in my paycheck and he usually doesn't,

sometimes he does!

(I work 39 hours a week. Why do I keep ending up at places that will make me work 39.5 hours a week but if I stay too late or forget to clock out they throw hissy fits because I have stayed for 40 hours and oohhh god that is fulltime can't be having that)

I have a work study job at school. I work in the little on campus cafe in the student center. I get free food. Today I made myself a ham, provolone and pesto sandwich for lunch and it was delicious.

b). Its a job enables me to be financially independent
c). Im working on a rather interesting subject that will become very important the coming years.
d). I will get along with the boats to get to know the area we work on better
e). I might also be able to tag along for a chopperride. (which is a big maybe, but eh)

Oh, and before anyone asks, yes, i do work for the government :)

Also, when i leave home heading to work, i walk through the dunes.

(though, thats just the first bit of a 1.5hr commute :))

The best thing that I have to say about my job right now, since I've yet to start, is that it exists!

However, there will be some real perks. It's a block and a half away from my house, it's cashiering, so it shouldn't be too trying, the staff I've met are super friendly, I get a 20% discount on everything (it's an import grocery store/deli, and my parents shop there lots), and when I work a full shift I get free food. Also it pays well and they can give me full time once I finish training. And they close at 8 so I'll never have to work evenings. Yay!

Even though I'm not really a morning person, starting early enough to get done at 3:30 is pretty nice, especially in the Midwestern summer.

Of course, this job hasn't started yet.

My job right now is writing bullshit papers and taking three tests, one of which will be a bitch.

I have insanely flexible hours at my freelance job.  It's for the insanely flexible hours that I keep it freelance, because my boss has asked me a few times if I'd go full-time.

Actually, come to think of it I rather abuse how flexible the hours are.  Next week I should probably stay late Monday and Tuesday to make up a little bit for the fact that I'm taking the rest of that week off to go to my sister's graduation.  For reference, I haven't even bothered to tell them yet that I'll be gone most of next week.  That's how flexible they are about scheduling.

i have many reasons to love my job but i'll just name a few.

1.  when someone steals from us, we take a polaroid picture of them, write on there their name and the value of the item they stole, and stick it on a bulletin board in the back room.  this basically means that in our break room there is a bulletin board covered in photographs of incredibly disgruntled hipsters.  this is meant for us to keep an eye out for shoplifters coming into the store, but it just ends up being comedy gold.

2.  a bad ass employee discount which is increased on employee appreciation weeks, which happen twice a year.

3.  being able to wear pretty much whatever the fuck i want as long as it is not offensive.

4.  we get sent promo albums and mixes by the company to play at the store, which are only played for a limited time.  what happens to these cds when they are no longer needed?  we get to rifle through them and keep them!  and i am practically the only person into indie rock stuff so i pretty much get first pick of what i want despite being the new kid.

I get tasty food for free on my break and free drinks.

They sometimes have another kp in doing the dishes and it leaves me to do pretty much whatever I want within reason ( the other day I ended up wandering about town buying small things that the kitchen needed).

One of my best friends works at the bar and all the other people I work with are pretty cool.

I got nicknamed by one of the waitresses. My previous nicknames have included "Robbie the Jobbie" and "Gypsy" (although that was one guy and he turned out to be a dick) now I am Robbie the Ray. Far superior to the last nicknames I reckon.

First day I worked I thought it was going to be shit, but it's turning out to be quite good. Woo for fun jobs.

I went to see my new office yesterday and the main room is just full of people on massive dual monitors drawing shit on huge tablets and playing games and watching youtube. I swear I saw a paper plane glide through. There is designated room for playing new games but when I saw it it was covered in DnD stuff. There is a Wii in the lunchroom. One of my bosses has one of those awesome big white egg chairs like in MiB, another has a hammock.
Also like I get a photo ID security pass and my own big-ass desk with dual monitors and I get sick pay and superannuation and annual leave and stuff, which are all things I have never had before and are pretty awesome. The office is located at Darling Harbour which is a lovely area and has fab shopping, also a monorail.
Also there is no dress code but I am going to be the classiest bitch.

I get wear normal clothes most of the time, but I also get to dress swanky sometimes and go to meeting on Capitol Hill! I also get to work with 2 very dedicated dudes who actually have a chance at getting a federal standard adopted for renewable thermal portfolio requirements! So basically I get to work in jeans and no shoes convincing people to use sustainable biomass fuel to heat their houses instead of fossil fuel furnaces and that makes me feel like a worthwhile person:)

I thought of another positive thing about my job: if it all goes belly-up with my exams and I never make it to uni, I'll probably get promoted and end up as a manager or something. I wouldn't actually mind that, I'd love to keep working there but only if I got to walk around a bit more often and do different things. At the moment I'm trained in three things and half-trained in another so things are never boring but I can see it getting less exciting to sell cigarettes and stack cans of beans in about ten years.

I answer the phones, and I like to think that maybe I make the customer service courtesy call people's days a little better, because I'm nice to them. (Except those guys from the online yellow pages. Good things about my job?

Hm. Weeellll.....

I work for a "vertically challenged" multi-billionaire with a private space program in his back yard of his New Mexico Desert Hideout. Guess is, James Bond will come around any time. As the geek that i am, i find that totally cool. Just buying out the NASA.

Else, I am surrounded by freaks (in fact, the companies hiring motto is: "Hire the freaks"). And when you think you have seen it all, some male collegues come back from a longer vacation with boobies on their chest and your first Job in the morning is to change their names in the system...

I'll count that as a good thing. Adds much to the fun part at work.

Oh. And the coffee is free. And the sodas. As much as you can drink. And...err.... the payment isn`t that bad. M'kay, its not that sexy workplace, but its quite ok. And a lot safer than my last job (check and measure holes in high pressure natural gas pipelines).

Have yet to try to work for Google, but in my Job Position, its at least better than working for Microsoft or Blizzard Entertainment (never worked for them, but my buddies do which do  pretty much the same as i do. And they complain a lot when we meet and go for a beer).

Nope. Jeff Bezos (Amazon CEO) with his private firm Blue Origin. http://public.blueorigin.com/letter.htm

Its based on his ranch in New Mexico and near where he lives in Kent, WA. He just buyed out the complete Delta Clipper Program from Nasa and McDonnell-Douglas including all the attached scientist slaves (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McDonnell_Douglas_DC-X)

C'me on... doesn`t my boss look like the next "Super-Villain"?

http://www.teezeh.de/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/mf_amazon_f.jpg

Btw, he doesn't want to be the first blasting a rocket into orbit. Or to the moon. Nope. His main target is "I want to be the first to own a private build space station". Guess you can aim high with your wishes and targets when you have billions to spend.

I've had a lot of jobs, each one of them had some awesome perks, but some AWFUL downsides. By the way, this is going to be long because I need* the morale boost;

1.- Assistant for an Artist: She had just arrived to the country and desperately needed an assistant because she had a big show in a few months, so she called a know local artist and asked for references. Somehow, the phone numbers got mixed up and she called the wrong person, I.

I was a jobless art student at the time, so i was going to work for any amount of money I got offered, the problem was that instead of being offered a amount of money, she asked ME how much assistants got paid in my country. For a second i tought about lying  (but don't ask me why I didn't) so i told her the average amount.

I had to work 15 hours a week, that meant 5 hours splitted in 3 mornings i choosed to go. She bought coffee and muffins for breakfast, every single day i worked with her.

At the end of the first week, she handed me an envelope, and I told her that it was normal in my country to get paid at the end of the month, she said it was no problem to pay me that week. (for a second there i tought i was getting fired)

I did not count the money in front of her (manners, or desperately wanting to run and buy a pack of smokes, or something), when i arrived home, i noticed that she had paid me the monthly amount i told her, i was like wtf, but i tought "language barrier, she will pay me at the beginning of each month".

Oh boy, i was wrong.

Next week passed through, and she handed me another envelope. Suffice to say that she loved working with me, and i never bothered to correct her error. But one day, she left the country.

Of course I had saved zero money, and i got used to making loads of it. I ate name-expensive-restorant-food something like 3 times a week, i spent entire afternoons at cafes with my friends, i asked women out on really expensive dates. Somehow i managed to spend all that money and buy zero permanent/semi-permanent stuff besides the vaio laptop i'm posting this with right now (maybe, just maybe, i bought some clothes, i don't remember).

The getting used to have 0 money again, was AWFUL (in fact today, 6 years later, it still bothers me how stupid i was when i was 18 :-p)

2.- Assistant for an Artist Again: He was radness Incarnate, the paid was decent. His older brother has some serious cultural relevance locally, in fact it is one of my favorite writters, everyone loves him, and for that he was always going to be under his shadow. But the thing that no one knows is that the characters in the books are him, the real thing.

He said he didn't care.

We did some really cool things, like, we did a series of paintings that got used on a film about a fictional artist, his brother, and his brother's wife, and the director sent some people to record us painting... it was disturbing to see me as a woman on the movie tho.

He was a TA at art school, we had a lot of fun with several artsy girls at a time.

He did some shows, i got to boss some people around, he sold paintings, we dressed, acted, partied like rockstars.

We went to openings, after parties, met a truckload of local celebrities/tv stars/politicians and got the chance to tell them they were morons/parasites/worthless/ignorant/sheeps/that they should read Guy Debord/Damien Hirst is so passe/save your soul/heard punk a cappella?/Mae Ueda is awesome/follow me/lets have some shots of jack daniels/do some coke/"don't worry, i'll pay" they said/blackout and they loved it, and i'm not sure what i tought.

Rinse and repeat about 3 times a week for about a year.

Somehow I managed to stay afloat, he spiraled down, last time he paid me, he let me took any CDs i wanted from his collection, i took Pink Floyd's "Animals", and walked away. I'm no one's secondary character.

See? even at the end i stayed in character (in fact today, 5 years later, it still bothers me how stupid i was when i was 19 :-p)

3.- I as an Artist:

I did it in between of everything, i had my Atelier at the fanciest spot in the city, several big canvases, a lot of paint, brushes, a big drawing board, some posh leather couches, a lounge were i could meet with my friends, kitchen, a few beds.

I invited a lot of women over the years, about 80% of them fell for it, if not, they did afterwards.

I hosted some of the best after parties there, in fact, the best one, and the last one, got me evicted.

oh yeah, some times, i painted.

Anyway, painting is too slow, and too much work, so i decided to do video art and détournements using digital tools (see? some fancy ass words to say that I photoshoped shit, and walked around with a video camera).

Bought my laptop.

Did some shows, got some media atention, sold just one fucking piece, and it was the one on the cover of the newspaper article, people is too shallow, and my Art has so much depth, they'll see later, I'm misunderstood, fuck it, i'm in this for the money, fuck art.

(in fact today, 2 years later, it still bothers me how stupid i was when i was 22 :-p)

4.- Gonna eat something. (by the way, this is really working, i'm feeling better), by the way, how does one get "permission" to post spoilers? and why you are not told about it, BEFORE you put spoilers in everything? heh, anyway, i wont go on, because without spoilers i feel this is offensively long.

*Why i need the morale boost:

I broke up with my girlfriend, the first one in years that i really care about, today at  5 am, i had to walk home (around 2 hours) and we are in the middle of the winter, and even tho i was completely drunk, i still felt cold. At some point i think that i fell, because my left hand is injured and bloodied and i can't type properly, or hold a coffee mug. Now I've got a terrible hangover (note to self: half a bottle of kentucky bourbon is not healthy), and  i think i catched a cold. FUCKING RAD

Writte essays, translate books, study, study, study. For example if you like Kerouac, there isn't a single decent spanish translation of "On the road". And in fact i would kill for a "spanglish" translation, specially now that they released the "uncut" version in english.

And in what is probably the fastest change of heart ever, I despise this job.

It is the most thankless job in existence.

18 hours days suck (wake up at 6, class at 7:20, run home after school, eat, shower, go to work, come home at midnight and pass out, repeat).

My body is so physically worn out and I am so mentally exhausted that a light drizzle in the cold got me so sick on Monday night that I couldn't crawl out of bed until 6 PM yesterday.

Of course "you don't see lobbyists for the coal industry taking sick days" (my boss trying to cast Super Liberal Guilt) so I have to go back today.

Yup. Moving to Munich is a good thing about a job to say. Cool city. Expensive, but cool. Hmm... working with lasers? Fraunhofer, Max Planck Institute, Euratom or BMO? Gigantic lasers...hmmm. Could be the Asterix Terawatt Beam in Garching. Niiiiiicee place to work. Not very far from where i hang around for my job most times.

Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching.  The laser I'll be using won't have quite as much punch as some of the terawatt systems, but when you pack 700 microjoules into 4 femtoseconds you can still do a lot of crazy things. :)  Its bandwidth spans the whole visible range, so there are no goggles that are effective against it.
Here's hoping I survive my first postdoc position.
edit: Well, hoping my eyes do anyway.  I could still totally win against it in a fist fight.

Hmm... Negative, Nicky... we could totally meet in September in one of the beer gardens. Oh. And if you want a tip from a local: Don't go on the Octoberfest. Really. Don't. We bavarians are just using it to rob all the money from tourists and then some. Everything that is there is sold at horrible prices. A "Maß" of beer will cost in 2009 there roundabout 11.5 US Dollars. For one simple liter of beer. A beer that you can buy everywhere in Munich for 3.5 Dollars (or in a beer garden for 7 Dollars). We beat out Disneyworld by far with charging prices for nothing. If you want to drink a lot of bavarian beer, party until you drop AND having folks around you speaking your language, go on one of the "german-american festivities" in the villages near the US military bases in Bavaria (like Hohenfels, Grafenwoehr, Amberg and such).

Though I am an American citizen, I spent a significant chunk of my life up through my mid-20s living all over Germany.  I even got married and had my first child there.  It's been way too long since I've been there, but that's another topic entirely...

Anyway, German-American fests are a hell yes!  The ones when I lived in Bamberg were fantastic.   We used to always go to the one in Nürnberg (though I imagine that's done since they closed post there) as well as Würzburg every year.

So much fun.  Skip München, ain't worth it.

Anyway, German-American fests are a hell yes! So much fun.

Especially when you see a lot of 19-20 year old US Soldiers recognizing that by german law it is allowed for them to drink and buy anything that contains alcohol. (Low Alcohol like beer and wine is legal to teens here that reached Age 16, strong alcohol like vodka when you are 18).

Sex shop warehouse: I get to play with dildos, send silly emails to the shops, I like my co-workers and I get to finish/take breaks on time!! This is not true of my other job.

Vet: I get to work with animals, and talk to other people who find pus and blood interesting. My boss is happy for me to randomly take time off for depression (contemplating this right now, not a common issue), pays me more than my co-workers of similar experience because I tried to quit, and would probably pay for me to finish my vet nursing if I thought I could concentrate well enough to do it.

Trust me when I say there are many cons to these jobs too, but they pretty much all come down to people. The jobs themselves are sweet and the environment is mostly great.

I accidentally went to Munich during Octoberfest last year.  I went to a conference in Paris in September, and decided to visit some German labs afterward.  I didn't even realize until I got to Munich why it had been so hard to book a hotel!  I should have figured it out from the fact that so many professors were out of town that week.  The first thing that I saw entering the festival grounds at night was a man in lederhosen urinating on the side of a van.  Every German I told about this has insisted that he was either from the US or UK.  Either way, I think I got the totality of the experience at that moment.

But yeah, some sort of QC bavarian get-together sounds interesting!

So I do not have a job, but I have 17 interviews this coming week and I will have a job by the end of June if it kills me. But I did discover something awesome about working, which is work clothes! Blazers! I mean, why are people not wearing blazers all the time my god they are beautiful.

That is really all I have positive to say about my coming week of interviews. Back when I said "I will have a job by the end of June," I actually meant "I am going into the journalism industry and my prospective employers find my desire to enter their field hilaaaarious." I might not have a job this summer. Unless it involves Twittering, because evidently, as a young journalist, this is all I am good for.

Man tell me about it. I am currently an intern at a large newspaper and everyone is basically cracking nervous jokes about redundancies all the time, because there's basically a new round of redundancies every week. Also about 80% of the writing staff seem to be over 40.

Today I get to explain to a bunch of people why all my folks not only get to keep their jobs, but why I can take on some of the other folks people who think they are about to lose their jobs and put them on my crew, and we get to hire some new people too.    By noon, I should be somewhat of a hero.

If my job was really great, this news would be greeted with complimentary blowjobs and popsicles, but I think just sighs of relief and gratitude will have to do.

The weirdest is when you think it's just their name, but then it turns out they actually are the famous person. One of my classmates in training got a famous drummer from a more famous band and he was all "do you know who I am?" and she was all "no". She said it in his voice too so I was like "!!!!!!!!! Having a mind-numblingly boring job at least makes me appreciate minor things. Like doctors finishing off their recordings with "Hey, hoooo!" completely randomly, or funny phrasings of weird shit patients have done. And there are long breaks, because middle-aged women like to take breaks and talk for ages.

Ladybug, that reminds me of this one report I heard where this medical transcriber was told that a kid had "Phollenfrometry", and the transcriber didn't know how to spell it and couldn't find it in any of his books, so he went to the doctor to find out what it was.

Turns out the kid had fallen from a tree.

Supposedly true.

It's really weird how sometimes I'm expecting them to say some difficult, medical word, and just expecting that will leave me completely unable to hear what they're actually saying, and I'll have to ask for help, and then I feel dumb when it turns out to be something really obvious and I can totally hear it afterwards.

I'm almost guaranteed a job if I move to a town that has an Aubuchon's in it. My last job was working as a security guard at an indian casino.

The perks?  I was absurdly overpaid considering my experience and what I was expected to do.  Also, sometimes they let me sit and read when guarding certain posts.  Mostly not, but sometimes.  Oh, the coffee was free.  Horrible, but free.  Let's see... I got to carry a nifty 2-way and listen to people say stupid or funny things on it.  I also got to wear a uniform that made my shoulders look ripped.  And since I worked the graveyard shift, my bosses were always really laid back.  As in, they didn't care.  About anything.  So that was cool.  For a while, too, I got to work with some friends of mine, but they all left for better jobs.  Also, there's the authority.  It's mostly imaginary, but there's power in a uniform.  When I told somebody to do something, especially an employee, they had to do it.  Customers?  Not so much.

If for some reason I could never go to college, I'd still be there.  It was a living wage... those are hard to find without a degree.

Now I'm a student.  It's not a job, which is the major perk.  No more long nights of terrible coffee, trying to stay alert and pretending that I had some sort of authority.  I almost miss it.  Almost.

i get to take a ferry across the bosphorus strait (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bosphorus) everyday. i usually have breakfast on it too. the view is epic, and the breeze is so refreshing in the morning.
i am supposed to get to work at 10 in the morning, yet i never come in earlier than 11 and after 12 about once or twice a week. yet my bosses don't complain because i can do stuff pretty faster and better than most people in the industry.
my room at the office overlooks 2 cafe-bar kinda places. they usually play great music, and i can take a break and go down there for a few drinks anytime i want.
there are beautiful trees too, old and tall ones that i can see from my room. green is a relief in a city of 12+ million.
the pay is more than great, and i get a full health plan including dental, visual etc etc.

yet, all this came at a price. i have been working since the first year of high school (part time then, full time after i finished h.s.) because my family is kinda poor, and work wasn't always as smooth as it is now. so i did not get to live my teens like my friends.

It's fucking stupid that we send everything out on paper as well as digitally, thus wasting a TON of paper, because it's apparently thrown away once the offices we're sending them to have checked that they've received it on the computer. Because it's summer, everyone in my tiny town is on holiday. This means work days are extremely slow, I basically just spend every day sitting on a chair waiting for the occasional (and very rare) customer to drop by. Lately the weather has been really nice as well, and I hate wasting nice summer days being bored at work. However, since I have nothing to do the few regular customers that are still home during the summer sometimes comes up to talk to me, which I really enjoy. Today I had a great conversation with an awesome old lady who told me stories about her life, about places she had been and people she had met while traveling with her husband who was a musician. She seemed quite lonely and very happy about having someone to talk to, and when she left she took my hand and told me what a nice young lady I was.

I love working when things like this happen, and I really hope she'll drop by again sometime.

It's winter here, so I get to sit inside my lovely warm office all day. It takes a while to heat up because we have mega high ceilings, but we have two space heaters and the airconditioning on hot and it finally gets nice and warm.

There is a patisserie next door to work and they are lovely and I don't have to even tell them what I want anymore. I love being a regular.

My Mum is my boss, so I guess I get to hang out with my Mum at work all day!

The job itself is pretty awesome, I get to design advertising for this company (real estate) and make sure things get to the newspapers on time and I have internet and I can have music on at work.

Also, it's less than 10minutes drive from home.

Um, one of the guys I work with is going on vacation tomorrow, and my birthday is next week, so he's going to bring me a birthday present tomorrow. :)

At work today other teams were trying to poach me to come work on their project (it's a biggish company where there are lots of separate teams of people working on different projects simultaneously.)  That was pretty cool.

Oh I guess I should mention that I'm at a different job from the last time I posted in this thread.  I'm making almost double what I made at my last job, so that's pretty cool too, although this is a short term contract so in a month I may very well be jobless, and that part's not so cool.

This is a positive?

So I'm applying to my first job at Einstein Bagel. The hours are shit but I don't mind the morning shift. I'll be spending monday, tuesday, and depending on how much I drink this week, a wednesday from 5 to 11 in the morning. Any advice?

I am doing a "What's On" column to help out the events listing section of the paper and people keep trying to bribe me with free tickets to stuff. It's pretty awesome.

I <3 einstein bagels. My gf and I would always go there for breakfast during college, bacon egg and cheese on an asiago cheese bagel. mmm. their orange juice is pretty swell too.

Depending on your location, get ready to see a lot of attractive people starting their mornings.

Nah, never taught there, nor have I quit any of my teaching jobs.  Those all ended at the end of the semester naturally (hoping to pick up classes in the fall again,) the job I left was a freelance game programming gig.

Also, your av fooled me!
