Title: Antichrist
Post by: Ballard on 19 May 2009, 14:15
New film by Lars von Trier turns from a marital drama into torture porn. It screened at Cannes recently to- shall we say, extremely mixed reactions.

Thoughts?

I'm interested, although I still prefer the Europe trilogy to pretty much everything else that he's done so I'm not that excited. I still need to actually get around to watching Dogville and the second half of The Kingdom first though.

I thought Von Trier's film before this one (a comedy with procedurally generated camera angles!) was a pretty cool thing, but his usual shtick doesn't do much for me. His stylistic choices and restrictions are often indulgent, rather than liberating as similar measures were during some of the classic "waves" (neorealism being the most prominent example, and even those guys dropped the pretense after awhile)

This should be interesting. I find Von Trier infinitely more enjoyable when he's indulging himself in the excesses of genre (Riget is my favourite work by him).

Also please can we put a moratorium on the phrase torture porn? Seriously, what are you, a sunday newspaper? Have you ever seen real torture porn? I could show you.

I could make you cry.
