Unnecessary vocoder use, guitars being played in positions that would probably cause major injury over prolonged periods, a jump into bad dance music for the final 45 seconds.

Case in point:

At least the girl in the video shows the proper response to the music.

This was inevitable.

I think they are all the same dude with bluescreen.

The vocals heavily remind me of Mammal Sauce (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJVrWqY4G9I) by Crotchduster

My personal favourite moments with time -

00:06 - The first time you see them doing their dicktarded little choreographed squatting.
00:36 - They apparently borrowed Cher's Autotune for the chorus of this song to mask the fact that their vocalist patently has down syndrome.
01:36 - When the singer and bassist adopt a new "running whilst standing still" move but the guitarist is still doing his signature "Crab Squat"
01:42 - Keyboardist dicktard gets his first little Korg break after thus far only contributing the keyboard preset Haunting Gothic 003.
02:29 - When Moley McDown-Syndrome rears up on his hind legs and roars as his own cameraman evidently recoils in horror.
02:46 - People asking themselves how the chronic level of sucking could possibly become more tangible have their question answered as the song becomes a feeble techno number and the band start to Riverdance just in case they haven't yet been gifted their own private new layer of hell.

Non time specific -

- The joy of knowing that their weird collective pant-shitting dance will almost certainly blight their future lives with incurable back-pain.
- The knowledge that someone out there forked out enough $$$ to make not one but two (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6kBlC-6_LM) distinct videos featuring this cavalcade of molten effluence.
- The fact that literally everyone in the band went for the black muscle T with tattoos and straightened hair look without exception.
- The mental image that at some point before this video was made, either they all sat in make-up and had their hair industrially straightened or individually owned the necessary equipment and know-how to straighten their own hair in the comfort of their own homes. I can't decide which of these two possibilities delights me more.

- Fortunately for us, wearing girl-pants and doing the dicktard bob for seemingly hours on end will render them completely impotent and we shall never have to suffer their offspring.

i think the techno interlude completely redeems the video. The whole time i was thinking, "wtf is that keyboardist doing? keyboardists aren't allowed to rock out that hard!" but i was wrong. that dude was just getting pumped for his solo.

From their youtube channel:

With the release of their eagerly anticipated debut full-length, Im Not A Fan But The Kids Like It, Crunkcore innovators Brokencyde are out to prove that their highly addictive blend of screamo and Top 40 hip-hop is here to stay. The album showcases a new found sense of growth and maturity as songwriters for the Albuquerque, NM group with introspective and emotional tracks like Jealousy and Im Sorry mixed with the crunk inspired party tunes that fans have come to love like Tipsy, Poppin and Freaxxx. Add guest appearances by platinum rapper E-40 and Daddy X from Kottonmouth Kings and you have an album so highly addictive you as a listener have no choice but to GET CRUNK!!!!

And they're on Itunes!

Note: I totally mixed up this band with brokencyde. who gives a fuck
Title: Re: Please Evaluate This Video
Post by: Melodic on 10 Jun 2009, 21:38
The keyboardist had to rock out thoroughly before his solo. It was charge time.

On a slightly more serious note, I like screamo. I mean, I like the idea of screamo. Can you guys help me find genuinely decent screamo bands? Is that doable? Is that possible?

Yes, please refer to that thread, and then realize that not everything loosely associated with the genre title "screamo" is hell-bent on devastating your eardrums in such perverse fashion that even a randy male dolphin would say is far, far too much...

And since no one is taking Tommy up on the challenge of evaluation, I shall try this:

Code: [Select]
"This Band": Good Music :: Fred Phelps : Christianity
And, the comment I posted to Youtube regarding this video:
Quote from: Why do I comment on Youtube videos, why oh why?
Somewhere in this universe, right this very moment, Kanye West is looking off into space with a terrorized look in his eye, and the owner's manual to his copy of Autotune in his hands saying "How the fuck could this have possibly gone wrong?"

what... what is this on his hands. is it blood? oh my god. oh my god everything is so full of blood. men. women. children. entire families. a dog runs past, its skin turned inside out. five demons scuttle across the sky like crabs and howl, their voices becoming as one, but something about it is too perfect. the edges of sound glisten with a computer sheen.

and he is among them. they circle him and rise up. as they face him, their faces becoming one multi-faceted thing crossing a hundred dimensions, he hears himself embrace the chaos around him. "let the bassline drop," he grins, and the world becomes ash.

"no!" he shoots up in bed, the sweat on his bare chest kevlar-thick. the supermodel beside him stirs. "sleep, baby," he says. it's advice he wishes he could follow.

get up. one leg out of the bed, then the other. a couple of preliminary stumbles and he's on his way to the bathroom. he shuts the door and flicks the light on in one gesture so that he will be spared any moments alone with the darkness. safe, well-lit, alive, he turns to face the mirror.

he puts one hand on his cheek, then the other. slaps twice to confirm. yes, he's still there. he's still will.i.am.
Title: Re: Please Evaluate This Video
Post by: Jimor on 10 Jun 2009, 23:08
Two technical points.

1. it sounds like an amateur Youtube mashup of two completely unrelated songs, the transitions between the two "styles" have no flow whatsoever.

2. I don't think they filmed enough "coverage" to actually make this video. Usually it's a tedious process of filming take after take of... oh, I dunno... actually playing along to a playback of the SONG? It looks like the "director" just had them thrash about wildly in short random segments while they pawed at their instruments. When they were done for the day, they found they had 1:37 of footage to spread out over a 3:34 song. "The editor can fix that in Post..."

Post by: Cire27 on 10 Jun 2009, 23:42
No, I've seen people like this live. They still play like that. It still sounds like shit.

I was really waiting for a crunk part somewhere in the song to tie it all together.

I was really waiting for a crunk part somewhere in the song to tie it all together.

They probably omitted that part in the final draft of the song so as not to generate a black hole which would consume the universe.

Uh, is there a person in the band whose whole purpose is to scream unintelligibly throughout the song? The guitarist is the autotune wonder, Moley McDown-Syndrome is just screaming and doing some awful dance moves.

Is this a thing? Brokencyde have a screamer too. How would you advertise for that? "Screamo band looking for screamer. Must look good in black and have own hair straightener"?

edit! I think I like the techno bit at the end the best out of the whole song, which is really saying something. Plus whenever I look at the guy singing it looks like he is swallowing his own tongue.

I was 'fortunate' enough to see BrokeNCYDE last week. They actually have parts of songs where they abandon their instruments, line up and scream for the duration.
Before I saw the video, I thought I'd seen these guys too, but I was thinking of the Attack! Attack! from Wales apparently. They are also terrible, but they're terrible on a different scale.

Yes.  That is exactly what that is.  It's like being at a Constipation Convention.  I'm not impressed with the sixth-generation xerox of Amy Poehler they got as their eye-candy either.

I do have to say, these guys have ambition.  They've decided they're not just gonna suck at one genre of music.  They're gonna suck at multiple, completely unrelated genres simultaneously.  And boy, did they ever succeed.

Keep living the dream, Attack Attack!

After watching this video again (why god, why!!!) I can feel parts of my cerebellum turning into a sort of gooey...well, goo, I guess. I'm certain that this is the real-life version of Vogon Poetry. I truly cannot understand how they managed to produce this without their uvula(s? ai? how does one pluralize the uvula, anyway?) dropping down, far far deep into the depths of their collective bowels (from whence I presume the inspiration for this spinning vortex of fecal matter came) and tying into several Gordian Knots in an attempt to preserve the dignity of our species, what little there is left of it.

Let us pretend that the band Underoath is represented by a piece of meat, shall we?
Now let us pretend that some unholy and unseen force has seen fit to leave this piece of meat sit in the sun for several days.
Now let us pretend that for reasons that no science on Earth shall ever be able to understand, the members of Aqua decide to take this piece of meat - by now quite rancid, as you can no doubt imagine - and puree it into a fine paste.
And finally, let us pretend that this newly-formed meatpaste is now mixed ever so daintily with all manner of noxious fluids expelled from the waste tracts of a glorious assortment of large mammals.

This is kind of like that, only for your ears.

With the release of their eagerly anticipated debut full-length, Im Not A Fan But The Kids Like It,

Oddly, "I'm not a fan, but the kids like it," is probably the nicest thing anyone over the age of 20 is going to say about this music. This statement will immediately be followed by somber looks from all listeners as the realization hits that the kids need to be entered in to some sort of rehab program as quickly as possible.

Ok, with inspiration from Tommy i want to point out hilarious bits of the video that he may have cut to keep his post so short.

00:46 - The keyboardist does a little playground skip while nonchalantly mashing the keys
00:59 - The guitar-over-the-head choreography (note Christophe's avatar)
01:03 - The simultaneous jump by guitarist and bassist
01:17 - The rock lobster (note my avatar)
01:58 - Guitarist who is inexplicably playing inside the house adopts a boy-band style 'empty grab to fist-pump on chest' move
02:02 - When he adds to his boy-band moves with the 'slow arm down' move
02:07-02:08 - The third boy-band style move, the 'heart slap'
03:02 - When the 'heart slap' is re-used (possibly the same heart slap as before, edited in twice?)
03:09-03:18 - When he finally believes he is in a boy band and performs a short routine

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you: CHRISTIAN CONSTIPATICORE

You never said that this would be easy,
So go on live,
You never said that this would be easy,
So go on live.

WOOOOOO!

This is the best part of the message,
And it only took one.

We live for what He's worth,
And that's more than you'll know.
He died for what He loved,
And what he loved was you.

I'll wait for you,
You know I'll wait for you,
I'll wait for you,
You know I'll wait for you.

You never said that this would be easy,
So go on live,
You never said that this would be easy,
So go on live.

Bow your head,
Go on live.

This is the time to let yourself go,
Lord pick me off the ground,
You never said this would be simple,
So pull me in and turn around.

That would be awesome, because that was one of the most hilarious parts for me.

Also, this is a pretty good track, it is the interlude. It sounds like there is going to be some sudden Europop.

OHHH, now I understand why everyone has the running in place and the crab squat avatars.  I was wondering.  Okay, so yeah, this video is... not good. I'm a fan of metalcore/deathcore/grindcore, not to be confused with whatever the junk this is.  This video has no redeeming qualities.  Not even the poorly done electronic interlude.  Most of the time, if a band has electronic stylings, it makes me like them more.  Take iwrestledabearonce, Enter Shikari, or Genghis Tron for example.  The main difference is at least those bands are being original.  Attack Attack seems like they are trying to sound like every other band who has already done what they do better, and that's what pisses me off.  And they are as ugly as hell.  Wear some masks or something.

Quote
Attack Attack! pursue an unusual and interesting artistic agenda, in that they openly despise all forms of recorded music, and with their work they aim to cause as many audience members as possible to doubt the validity of sound as a reliable medium with which to convey ideas, opinions and feelings.

I think the label "punk" had its final nail put in. Though, I'm glad to see they've evolved as a band to move beyond the confining "rock" genre (i.e. lost the drop d guitars) in favor for a more techno sound.

Last.fm doesn't block tags. That would be antithetical to their entire method of operation. They do take a while (up to a week) to get on to the clouds though. Also, iirc, there is an algorithm that compares tag clouds with those of similiar artists and then weights similiar tags higher than outliers. So, for example 'screamo' will be worth more than 'crab dance' because quite a lot of the similiar bands to Attack Attack! will also have the screamo tag.

What we need to do is to tag all the similiar artists as well.

Last.fm yelled at me for "Abusing the wiki" but it remains unchanged, and still reads:

Quote
(NOTE: This is the page for the Columbus, Ohio USA crabcore band, but the name is very similar to two other groups. For the South Wales UK pop-punk band, the correct tag is Attack! Attack!. For the Australian DJ group, the correct tag is Attack Attack!)

Attack Attack! is a six-piece crabcore band from Columbus, Ohio. Attack Attack! consists of Nick Barham (Vocals), Johnny Franck (Vocals/Guitar/Crabwalk), Andrew Whiting (Guitar/Crabwalk), John Holgado (Bass/Crabwalk), Caleb Shomo (Synth/Keys), and Andrew Wetzel (Drums). They are crabbily signed to Rise Records.

Halfway through a crabtour supporting Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, Attack Attack! kicked out vocalist Austin Carlile, Austin has since been replaced by crabcore enthusiast Nick Barham, former screamer of For All We Know.

Also, the Urban Dictionary post is up!

The funniest part of the Attack Attack video was at about 20 seconds, when they start doing doom metal tremolo picking while in a sunny midwest farm setting. After that, I just started hating myself for watching it.

Does anyone know what the story behind all of the dead snow advertising was in the "My Ass" video?

If they were to run with this and have fun with the designation, I'd give them full props for having a sense of humor about themselves.

The original video wasn't great, but it was at least competently filmed and edited, and while they still crab and have some other silly moves, it's not nearly at the same level of goofiness the 2nd video they were forced to make by the record company was. One mention I saw is that it was the techno rave scene that was the objection, but man, if you're going to do something that ridiculous in the song, at least acknowledge it in the video.

If he is being sincere, that's actually kind of respectable.  It means that he really doesn't take himself seriously.  In that case, hopefully the rest of the band doesn't either.  I'm not saying I like their music, but maybe they are really just having fun with their little crabcore thing.  Regardless, I will still make fun of it, but if they truly don't take themselves seriously, than they probably won't care if we make fun of them.

Quote
But if you look at their video tour diaries, you'll notice they are soundtracked by stuff like Basshunter, so maybe they just have very, very poor taste.

SCREEEEEEEWWWWW YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUU.

Having watched the second video closely, I can't really think of any explanation other than the further proliferation of crabcore.  It has all the hallmarks: choreographed dance moves such as running in place and some crablike gestures, the auto-tune chorus, the screeching, the combination of keyboard presets and numetal riffz, the aggressive hair-straightening...The list goes on and on. It's utterly baffling.

The look on the faces of all of the band-members in the "picking up the instruments, before they start playing" montage in this new video are intriguing. It's like a mixture of threat and apology, as if they've glimpsed their own damnation but have realised that it's too late to turn back now, so they're gonna ride this thing out all the way to the end.

Apologies for quoting the immediately preceding post, but that was awesomely put.

I like how my YouTube username for posting my joke Attack Attack! video (CrabCoreFan) is pretty much the only comment I need for this one.

EDIT: "Live" version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFMerfxMkHE). WTF? Is the drummer singing with his NOSE??? And that's some enthusiastic audience (all 20 of them), LOL.

EDIT2: BWAHAHAHA!! OK, check out the keywords on this tour update video from Attack Attack! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FURuNCI9CSk) themselves. That is probably the worst behind-the-scenes video I've ever seen, but 2.5 milli-props for embracing the new genre.

Hmm.  The first half of that video was laughably terrible and I honestly only watched through it because I was hoping for synchronized wild guitar flailing by 3/4 of the way through.  Once the color came into the video, though, I spent about 15 seconds constructing some kind of scathing remark to make about the video director and then it actually just started to get really visually interesting and I tuned the music out entirely.  By the end of it I found myself thinking that a better video using the same visual schtick might actually be really cool if there was some good music behind it.

I mean, fuck Autotune and all that (no, seriously, FUCK Autotune for shit like this), but I'll give this latest development in the crabcore saga some credit for catching me off guard and having a redeeming quality (an attempt, at least).  It legitimately looked like fun.  It's like one of the girls picked up a hitchhiking Wayne Coyne on the way to the video shoot, and he evaluated the situation and realized that there was only one thing he could do for these people and that was at least turn their shoot into a good time for the backup dancers.

I have half a theory percolating in my brain. Each generation wants music that's just theirs -- if your parents or even older siblings will listen to it, that takes all the fun out of it.

There are two ways of accomplishing this goal. First, to subvert the mainstream with something that challenges authority and speaks to the alienation that a lot of young people feel, both musically and socially. Thus we get punk, certain types of rap, hardcore, etc. A variety of genres that I personally don't listen to, but I can still respect that they're trying to carve out a real niche for themselves and their fans.

Method #2: Create "music" that's so fucking horrendous that NOBODY but the target demographic and their clone cohorts will listen to just because anybody who has developed even the tiniest quantum of taste will stay the hell away from it all. Thus this crabcore movement (I think we can now safely assign the actual musical style to the genre outside of the ridiculous stances).

The autotune boy band part of the music works to tap into the vast eternal sea of kids who fall for whatever the latest "bubblegum" genre is, but to keep mom and dad from accidentally enjoying the generally innocuous pop production aspect, they throw in the screamo element to engender the desired reaction of "turn that fucking crap DOWN!"

This band (http://www.myspace.com/thespitfireparade) is tagged as "crabcore" on LastFM.  I don't really get it; the couple of songs I've listened to sound pretty inoffensive, and nothing like Attack Attack! or Breathe Carolina.  In fact, I'm kind of enjoying it.

Plus, their influences include The Dead Boys, The Fall, Husker Du, Gang Of Four, Joy Division, Mission Of Burma, Stooges, Television, The Voidoids, Wire, and other pretty cool punk bands.  I'm baffled.

t.
Includes many beloved elements, such as:

Terrible screaming
Lots of guitar chugging
Absolute abuse of the bass pedal on the drumset, with terrible drumming overall
Horrible, horrible autotune
Completely out of place electronic elements
And the entire song sounds like a breakdown

Yeah, but this is just a goofy stupid party song like Macarena or what have you, it's nowhere near the level of assault (I was going to attempt to modify "assault" in some way, but the word on its own does the job admirably in these cases) you have with Facecast, Brokencyde, DAPL, Attack Attack!, etc.

Oh are we doing comedy hardcore now? Excellent.

How about if they weren't kidding? Facecast are blatantly a joke band, One Life Crew on the other hand seemed like they meant it. Basically, Cleveland hardcore is some scary shit. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_I2FIw7YEs)

And if we're just doing hardcore that's hilarious then it's time for the obligatory TRC video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=255euVhmdW0) (their name apparently stands for Teenage Robbing Crew). Oh, and let's have Ninebar's Read These Boks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Anz_kVX3KGk). "Stomp stomp left, stomp stomp right, boks in your face 'til there's no teeth left". Ah Londoners, so terribly subtle and witty.

Facecast are blatantly a joke band

I watched this entire video three times looking for signs that the song, band or performance contains any traces of humour, wit or irony. There is nothing at all to suggest that they are anything but serious. I feel like maybe you are doing what I initially did by looking for some way to relieve yourself of the notion that they could be entirely serious about this utterly abhorrent music.

I would love to be wrong but I can't find a single inkling that there was any humourous intent. If you can, please point them out to me. I would like to believe that they are a joke.
Title: Re: Please Evaluate This Video
Post by: a pack of wolves on 03 Sep 2009, 08:43
Their myspace (http://www.myspace.com/facecast518) lists their genres as "hardcore/comedy/idol" and their other songs include 'I Fucked Your Mom' and 'She Has A Dick'. Not to say that it's a good joke or anything, but they're definitely not serious. Given how utterly ridiculous this kind of hardcore is anyway they're sadly not too far from the bands who do mean it so it is difficult to tell. Hard as it is to believe, this video is not a pisstake. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHBkHoQrOQg)
Title: Re: Please Evaluate This Video

Man, it is pretty hard to respect the tough-guy credentials of a band where the only guy you are unsure about whether you could take in a fight is the chubby drummer.

(Drummers always punch hard).

Facecast is, oddly, one of the few bands I've ever heard that would be improved by shittier production on the vocals. Apart from those they pretty much sound like literally hundreds of other tediously chugtastic modern hardcore bands.

Attack Attack
CRAB FUCKING CORE

I Set My Friends on Fire
I Set My Friends On Fire, hailing from Miami, FL, are the end result of a sonic mind-meld of Nabil Moo and Matt Mihana. After a couple of years playing together as We Are The Cavalry, Nabil and Matt formed ISMFOF in late August 2007. These are decidedly not old music vets, but rather uber-precocious teens who started their musical journey around the same time they started high school. The duo records thusly: Matt does the singing (fueled by plutonium and Wheaties) and Nabil does everything else, and while this division of labor may seem unfair to some, Matt and Nabil are united by their genre-defying take on music and their desire to f*ck with people. Epitaph

Miss May I
The deathcore band, Miss May I, hail from Troy, Ohio. The band has been around since 2006, playing local shows and steadily gathering a loyal fan base. Signed to Rise records like other like minded buckeye staties At the Throne of Judgment&The Devil Wears Prada. Rise Records

Our Last Night
Hailing from the idyllic small town of Hollis, New Hampshire. Our Last Night's skillful ability to craft brilliantly catchy songs while maintaining credibility with their astounding technicality and talent for finding an exceptional balance between the heavy and the melodic. Epitaph

So, I went to see a performance by a Bhangra performance last weekend, and when they did this (http://harshimpexservices.com/ecart/images/BEN-BH~1%20copy.jpg), all I could think about was crabcore.  I hate the internet now.

Also, that interview is fantastically awkward, on both ends.

You have to remember that Attack Attack! are this generation's Black Flag. Musicians will come and go, the Attack! will endure.

That makes the new singer Caleb their Dez Cadena and the departing Nick is their Ron Reyes. Eventually, they will find their Henry Rollins and it'll all work out. By this logic, the band Of Mice & Men (http://www.myspace.com/ofmice) is the Circle Jerks. I'm glad you're all coming with me on this.

I, for one, have the image of a Crabcore cover of "My War" in my head.

Oh ye gods that would be so terrible and yet I want to hear it so badly.

Also you do realize that if Attack Attack! were to make their own version of this chart every face and hairstyle would be exactly the same. (http://blog.wfmu.org/.shared/image.html?/photos/uncategorized/2008/04/10/black_flag_hair_3.jpg)

So, apparantly the keyboard player is going to do the harsh vocals and front the band, and all keyboard tracks will now be on playback live. This sucks becuase really, watching the keyboard player trying to look as active and intense as the rest of the band while not really doing anything for the most of the song was hilarious.

One of the things I've observed about these weird crabcore/mainstreamo bands is that they all have mandatory screaming but it's completely innocuous. It's as bland as the autotuned vocals that inevitably go with it, which is saying something. Hearing someone shout indiscriminately for the sake of it is numbing to the listener, which presumably defeats the purpose completely. It doesn't convey any real malice or emotion, it just sits there in the foreground as a misguided attempt to create some kind of edge to music which is unanimously feeble.

Put it up against Elvis Costello snarling "she's last year's model" at the end of 'I Don't Want To Go To Chelsea' or, for an example closer to home, our Anna's cover (http://www.box.net/shared/bf8m01kxx8) of Beluah's 'You're Only King Once'. The emotional impact is incomparable.

Title: Re: Please Evaluate This Video
Post by: Inlander on 26 Oct 2009, 18:43
It's not that the music is horrible, it's the fact that it's directly, blatantly, and unashamedly derivative of the Postal Service that's horrible. Being derivative of a particular genre of music is one thing, making music that sounds basically identical to that of another band which had a very distinctive sound and calling it your own creative work is quite another.

I've actually got more respect for that than for the Owl City song. Firstly, it's a cover and they're not pretending it's anything but a cover. Secondly, they're doing it in their own style instead of just rehashing the original. Granted their own style is gut-meltingly awful, but still, props where props are due.

Are you ready for this? This is Next Stop Mars' myspace (http://www.myspace.com/nextstopmarsband). You will not regret clicking this link. They must have spent more time working on that myspace layout than the music itself. Let me point out some of the comedic gold contained within.

A) A cover of Sk8r Boi.

B) They have multiple sponsors. Or they pretend to. Either way, equally mindblowing.

C) The singer calls himself Kill Ryan Dead.

D) They advertise their own personal facebook profiles on there.

Various other mindblowing features, such as an application that you can register your phone number on to recieve text messages when they update, and a counter that keeps track of every visitor and where they are from, and label them fans. I am responsible for thirty-something clicks from Iceland as of now. What have I done?

So, I've taken the time to actually do a fair listen-through of Attack Attack!'s one album. I find it to be annoying and surprisingly pretentious (Do you really need an electronica-based intermission in the middle of a 31-minute release?), but not bottom of the barrel crap like Brokencyde. I'd put it at about 3/10.

Good thing the reviewer gets the "music tastes are subjective" bit out of the way early, because:

Quote
"Bro, Ashley's Here" follows smoothly, continuing the lyrical content and eloquent synth work found in "Stick Stickly". The album's title comes from this song, in the very powerful line "Someday came suddenly, and now I'm left standing here."

oh my god.

Crabcore was mentioned in my local alternative rag, The Stranger!

Quote
Brokencyde, Kill Paradise, Watchout! There's Ghosts, Blood on the Dance Floor

(El Corazn) With the exception of Christian "crabcore" act Attack Attack (also playing this week, Tuesday at El Corazn; take a minute to Google these terms if you're unfamiliarshit's hilarious), Brokencyde may be the single most heinous musical atrocity to emerge out of the past year. A four-piece joke from suburban "Albu-crazy," New Mexico, the act combines the worst elements of "emo" and "crunk" (off-key "emotive" whining and screaming, crap beats, two kinds of disrespect for the ladies) while looking like a Hot Topic vomited all over them. If you can watch more than 15 seconds of their breakout YouTube clip "Freaxxx," you are a champion of ironic appreciation. If you dare go to this show, you're just fucking crazy. ERIC GRANDY

Keyboard-turned-singer dude is just phoning it in. Sorry, but your voice must be this growly to Attack Attack. Get back behind the keyboards and call me when they get a proper replacement screamer so I can be properly horrified by this music like nature intended.

Besides, they are on the way out. Remember Thy Name (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqI0xBiMYqg) are clearly on the fast-track to the Crabcore crown, am I right?

So are Attack! Attack! actually going to be remembered as pioneers of a music genre?

Attack! Attack! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attack!_Attack!) are probably not, because they haven't invented anything.  Attack Attack! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attack_Attack!), on the other hand, hopefully aren't, because the genre will hopefully die very soon.  Also, the kids these days don't like to learn things about their music, so they probably will have no idea the history of the genre of crabcore.  Oddly enough, the only people who will know how the genre came to be and got established will be we who hated it.

Dude, what? Those guys are like a super-tight funk machine compared to the Shaggs. Put a bit of distortion on the guitars, make the vocals tiny bit hoarse and the lyrics less aspirational and you've basically got a mid-90s "alternative music" song.

This is actually a more apt comparison.

There was a band that basically really was a Christian Rock version of The Shaggs (couldn't play their instruments in time, liked Creed) but they've broken up and they took all of their songs off of their myspace.

They were called "Faceless Man".

The thing that I have worked out from hip hop and rap in general is that, especially live, audience participation and energy levels are a big, integral part of performance. That guy didn't sound like he was rapping. he sounded more like he was doing a spoken-word piece, which almost always sound wanky and terrible (which is how he sounded). Title: Re: Please Evaluate This Video
Post by: David_Dovey on 25 Nov 2010, 14:30
I dunno, this is more than just the sum of it's parts to me. It feels like it's trying to cram literally every single aspect of trash-culture into one band and one song in the most cynical way possible. I can't even bring myself to listen to it all the way through, which I've done more than once with Stick Stickly and several other tunes. I guess we probably disagree on what is worse. I think Attack Attack and such at least suck entertainingly, which is worth more to me than something like this, which is just hack-work of the highest order. I also feel like most of the rave-core (or whatever you call it) stuff is the product of some really eager kids with horrible taste in everything, while this feels more to me like something which is just all artifice, very deliberately constructed to appeal to as many dumb assholes with loose cash as possible. Similarly, while both songs/bands are horrible pastiches of completely mismatched genres, at least the ravecore kids are trying something relatively new. It kind of blows me away that there are still bands out there humping nu-metal's dessicated corpse in 2010.

also, the video has a guy from Slipknot in it!
Title: Re: Please Evaluate This Video

It is disconcerting how closely that band modelled themselves off Attack Attack. They have basically the same hairstyles, and outfits, the screamy dude yelling something unintelligable, they do the running man move, and the crab core move. They don't have as many breakdowns, but the autotuning is most definitely there with some added effects that make the words too hard to understand. I think the guy is singing in English, but it is so hard to understand I just pretended it was Japanese and it made no difference to the song.

Okay. Seeing as I am more or less impossible to genuinely offend myself, I have a hard time seeing the problem. I do however understand that some may be more sensitive to that than others, so I apologize.

But in all seriousness, I really do think that's what happened to some extent. Some record label exec in japan saw that this madness was becoming popular, sort of, and decided to create a group for themselves to profit on. I simply refuse to believe music like this happens "naturally".

I mean "gaijin rike this, raito?" is a thing that I hear with amazing regularity.

Not exactly complex or clever humour but can we just be offended for once rather than decrying a minor slight?

No, they actually do when they think in English. It is a product of how they are taught in the public school system. Though textbooks usually hve examples in the roman alphabet, most japanese people do not know how to read it properly, so accompanying furigana (phonetic reading aids) are used and the word is effectively transliterated to and learned in the japanese syllabary. As a result of this, your average japanese english speaker (which really only comprises a very small percentage of the population) will talk and think like that whenever english is used.

I do want to note that this is all an aside to the actual joke issue.

Well, I just think english with accents is hilarious, and that is all there is to it. This video could have from any other country that ham-fistedly apes American culture, not necessarily just Japan. If I had made the same joke, but with a German accent, would people have reacted the same?  :psyduck:

I would, actually. I think the german accent is waaaay funnier.

Oh god now the idea of a german band playing this shit has popped into my head. And I know it will happen soon. Oh god no.
