Had a quick check, but I didn't see any old thread like this.
Who are your favourite artists? The ones that either inspire you, or make you want to give up and use your paintbrushes to dust shelves because your own art will never be as good as theirs.
At the moment, I'm ga-ga over Aubrey Beardsley:
J. W. Waterhouse (his paintings are a bit naff, really, but good lord I wish I could paint like that):
And Brett Helquist:

-
M.C. Escher, Ansel Adams, Arthur Barnes, Jim Orr, Joe Montgomery, that one guy who vomits paint
Do photographers count?
-
M.C. Escher, Blek le Rat, and Banksy.
Theres this other guy but I cannot remember his name, nor his website. The drawings are really weird but awesome, alot of them show these monsters vomiting other monsters and, well I dont know but it is awesome.
These are some Banksy's :
http://www.weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/07/banksy-stencil-guerilla-street-art.jpg
Yeah, he is a Graffiti artist.
Blek le Rat's trademark:
https://apah.wikispaces.com/file/view/rat-1981-1.jpg
and self also from Blek:
http://posterdistrict.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/blekbook2.jpg
Hes also a Graffiti artist.
Annnnd do I really need to post something from Escher? Anyone ever in a math class probably knows it, I always looked at it more than the actual classwork.
-
If I could be bothered to find it, M.C. Escher could further the whole batdicks thing. He did a picture (or two, or three) that included bats and their penises.
-
Banksy here too. Ed van der Elsken.
He might be unkown here:
http://www.edvanderelsken.nl/index.php?page=imgarch
Mondriaan.
-
Rembrandt
I saw some of his paintings in the Louvre, DAMN! He's amazing. It took me forever to find them (that place is a maze). But yeah, he's been my favourite painter for a while now.
-
I really enjoy Brett Helquist. His work is just epic. I'm sort of a classic guy. I really enjoy Dali as well. There are plenty of modern artists as well. I enjoy Echer as well. And Giger.

Here's where I betray my education. Confining myself to the living, I think my top five at the moment are:
Ilya Kabakov

Changes all the time, of course. Kabakov might not normally be there but I just read a book about him and remembered his utter genius. I think he nudged out Hew Locke. If it If we expanded out to dead artists I could literally be here forever but special mentions go to:
Otto Dix

Ilya Kabakov
The Man Who Flew Into Space From His Apartment
I have seen this! Jens and I went to the museum it is in. I had no idea what it was but it is really cool nonetheless.
I realise more and more that I don't know enough about art, but I've been trying to educate myself a bit more.
So far I have discovered I like Frida Kahlo
(http://www.tate.org.uk/images/cms/12776w_selfportraitwithmonkey_kahlo.jpg)
Henry Moore
(http://images.worldgallery.co.uk/i/prints/lg/2/5/25599.jpg)

One of my fav artists is Dhabih Eng.
Check the link for examples of his work: http://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/Dhabih_Eng
He started out doing his own stuff on his website and doing freelance work for gaming magazine covers, and did some artwork for a Quake 2 mod. But then Valve hired him on and since then he has done a lot of the conceptual work on HL 1 and 2. HL2's style is very heaviily influenced by his own personal style. Take a look at basically any HL2 concept or box art for Halflife and his name will be attached to it. Almost any official image from HL2 is his work. If he wasn't a part of the team HL2 would obviously have looked very, very different, and I think that would have been to its detriment.

Here are some, but it's too difficult to decide on one or a few favourite artists, so it's basically a random selection of artists I like.
Sophie Calle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sophie_Calle):

I wonder, does this forum accept a Baskerville font?
As to favorite artists - John Howe, Alan Lee, Omar Ryyan, Mairin-Taj Caya, Arthur Rackham...hm...Bryan Froud, Gary Lippincott, John Jude Palencar, Kinyuko Kraft, Leo & Diane Dillon...this list could go on a ways, but there is a good start. I think Rackham is the only dead guy; let's add J.C. Leyendecker so he has some company.
-
René Magritte, David Wojnarowicz, H.R. Giger and Salvador Dali
-
Dead people: Monet, van Gogh, Sorolla (seriously, look at the water, look at the light!):
Undead people: Hilary Farmer http://www.greenteadoodles.com (http://www.greenteadoodles.com) (shameless plug... I'm the poet whose work accompanies much of hers, and we are also producing an illustrated Web serial novel that tells the story of what really happened to Christopher Marlowe after he "died", including true love, sword fights, revenge... no, wait! That's "The Princess Bride". But we have most of that stuff too, all in 140 word illustrated episodes! http://www.songsofalbion.com (http://www.songsofalbion.com)):

I like Dali, Echer and Giger. Their work is just awesome.
-
Wasn't sure where to put this... but here looked good.
I've always loved Van Gogh, so this grabbed my eye...
The Day I Saw Van Gogh’s Genius in a New Light (http://asada0.tumblr.com/post/11517603099/the-day-i-saw-van-goghs-genius-in-a-new-light)
Scroll down and note the image comparisons. It's very convincing - a 60% loss in the red cone receptors make his odd color choices look sensible.
Also helps explain how he felt so misunderstood...
-
Frank Bellamy, as he could draw comics like noone else
Miro, as he makes me smile
Barbara Hepworth, for being better, earlier and more consistant than Henry Moore
Turner, for inventing perfect Impressionism before there was such a thing
Valia Kapadai, for being bloody brilliant (http://neurotic-elf.deviantart.com/ (http://neurotic-elf.deviantart.com/))
-
Rene Magritte
-
Virgil Finlay
Pushead
Jim Mafood
