Title: #1458: Yay for my country?
Post by: DA_IMP on 29 Jul 2009, 00:08
Just wanted to make random comments:

1) I had a pretty good laugh at Faye's line in the last panel. It might've been a bit bigger than normal 'cos I laugh more intensely when I'm stressed sometimes. A relief mechanism I suppose.

2) That was before I got to read the rest, so Faye's line worked as the punchline for me in a sense.

3) "Argentinean" is a correct demonym for my country's people (and stuff) according to Wikipedia. "Argentinian" is the most common usage in my (above-average) experience in dealing with the rest of the world. "Argentine" is a less common one, and I actually never heard "Argentinean" before, I believe. I suppose it works? In any case, do demonyms go with capitals? I never remember that one grammar rule (no worries, no spelling troll/nazi here).

4) Part of my stress is because our economy is beinf f***ed up the *ss again, and it's making my current finances a real pain. They're devaluating our curency more and more and *also* legally limiting our right to exchange our local currency for safer ones (dollars, euros). It feels like a quite literal cage, what they're doing.

5) I still appreciate the joke in Hannelore's line and find it funny. Trust me, living in this country gives you a great many chances in developing your sense of humor. I strongly believe we have some of the best sense of humor in the world. It's a survival mechanism, in keeping with the thoughts of #1.

6) Yay for my country being mentioned in one my top favorite websites of all time. For statistical reference, consider I've been a quite frequent citizen of the interwebs for like 12 years now.

7) Kindly tell Hannelore her mother is soooo dead.

8 ) To our awesome author: I'll assume this means you actually know something about Argentina? Kuddos for the int'l knowledge.

How does one carry a zero?

That was going to be my question. Carrying supposedly only happens when there's a non-zero digit to be carried.

Surreal comic = surreal math.

You pick it up first.

I'm surprised that this wasn't the first answer posted to the question.

Am I to understand Faye makes $6500 dollars in a week? Or was the decimal point misplaced by two places?

Even in that case she's still making $650 a week, which isn't too damn shabby for a café clerk. I sure as hell never made that much. Even at $12 an hour you'd have to work more than 50 hours a week to make that much. That's 8 hours a day seven days a week. I guess I'm just a lazy bum. Or I guess Faye part-owns the place and they don't hire a lot of help??

I just assumed she gets paid every 2 weeks.

That's still not too bad. It's more than I get.

But the decimal point was out in one of Dora's original calculations. Which would affect all future calculations, so Faye's pay slip wasn't necessarily right-but-for-the-decimal-point.
Did that make sense to anyone but me? I can't think of another way to phrase it.

I just assumed she gets paid every 2 weeks.

That would mean about 15k a year. Yeah, you can live on that easily.

However, in the first panel she implies that her payday is once every week.

I think I'm to understand Faye makes close to 35k a year ringing up coffees. Damn, I wish I could get in on that.

Perhaps she gets paid once a week but some of her pay was behind or something, and her average check isn't for as much as $650 :? Or plethora's explanation.

Yeah, that blew my mind when I saw that paycheck. That's when I figured it out. The Coffee of Doom is actually a front for a drug dealing ring ala Weeds.

True, it is implied but it can also be implied it's every two weeks since it could mean any week she gets paid. 35k seems a little much for working in a coffee shop to me, but still it's possible!

False.

Let's see... If payday is every 2 weeks, at $650 every payday, that's $16,900 annually, or about $8.12 an hour at 40 hours a week. Sounds about right for working in a coffee shop, especially an independently-owned one. (I doubt you make that much working at Dunkin' or Starburnt unless you're a manager.)

Also, we know Faye occasionally works overtime.

Or it's a comic and it is possible Jeph never even gave it that much thought?

It's probably a 2-week paycheck.  What else is Faye supposed to say, "It's the best time of the fortnight"?

Also, I was assuming Faye's paycheck was supposed to say "$650.00" and Dora just left out the decimal point, making it "$65000".  However, Faye can't successfully cash the check (unless Dora was REALLY absent-minded) because you have to write out in words the amount for the check.

How does one carry a zero?

Could be used as terminology for moving numbers in an equation

Code: [Select]
  1,456.12
x      2.5
    728060
   291224
3640300
3640.300

if she mistakenly did not carry down a 0 then when she put the decimals in place it would have changed the total number.

Jeph changed the comic to read "decimal point" instead. It does make Faye's line funnier, but in a different way.

That's not taking out any taxes which puts Faye closer to 10 bucks an hour which is reeeeally high for any retail job. I still think the coffee shop is a front for drug dealing.

As a fellow argentine, I just registered to tell you, my good Jeph Jacques (if that's your real name, huh? HUH?!), that you are WRONG!
We, the argentinean people, - unless the QC universe is a weird and perverted place - fucked our own economy without Hanner's mom interference. History shall prove me right.
Cheers!

Massachusetts has a minimum wage of $8.00 now, and they live in MA.

Changed it from what?

By the way, did anyone else notice Faye's bug-eyed look in panel 3?

I am assuming she gets paid fortnightly and with the overtime she sometimes does, earns $650.

You know, in the world that the comic Watchmen takes place in, America won the vietnam war because of Dr. Manhattan. But you know, that is wrong because no one won the vietnam war. History shall prove me right.

(I am being a jerk for no reason, you are new and I don't know if you are going to be cool or not, I just wanted everyone to imagine blue wang)

Hey dude I have a comic where a character makes $100,000 a year in a recession. It is alright, things can be pretty unreasonable.
Alternatively, Faye gets paid with Zimbabwean dollars.
