There was some discussion of this in the last Con thread, but is anyone serious about it? I think we should make it happen, considering I missed the last Toronto meet up and I think Anna said she did too. A mini-con would be some fun for sure. There was talk of doing it in Montreal too, but most of us are in the GTA...so having it here would make the most sense.
Who's in, and what time frame works for you guys?
-
Also webcest.
Don't let us down.
-
Man, Mike offered to pay for that and he never did. Goddammit.
-
yeah i did miss the original tronnocon. i will probably come to this one since i actually live in tronno, not the gta. (and am therefore incredibly flexible when it comes to time frames because i'm in the city anyway and not incredibly busy)
i can't promise that i will be "fun to hang out with" though.
-
Also webcest.
Man, Mike offered to pay for that and he never did. Goddammit.
-
i also live super close to the city and work there about 3-4 days per week so just about any date and time is good for me too.
-
soooo since this isn't a big fancy thing can we maybe try for next week?
it's my birthday next week. i can celebrate with the internet.
-
I was in Toronto last week. Where were you guys then?
-
Put up your hand if you live in Toronto and got a PM from Michael last week. That's what I thought.
soooo since this isn't a big fancy thing can we maybe try for next week?
That sounds like an alright plan, but what about Joseph, I think he was planning to come out to this if it were to happen?
-
In the spirit of tradition one of you gots to get yr car impounded and another person gots to piss themselves on public transportation.
Also walk into a bus stop, walk into a railing, get burnt by a cigarette, piss in an alley, and then be carried up two flights of stairs. All in the span of an hour, one person must do this.
-
WHO WILL TAKE UP THIS BURDEN?
-
hey
-
I volunteer all of us.
-
I was carried up stairs?
-
Yes, I carried you upstairs. (Like, not fireman style, but you would not have made it up alone.)
See kids, this is what happens when you get super drunk with the internet.
-
You ruined my awesome mental image when you said "not fireman style". RUINED.
-
What if I carried him like one normally carries a lady? Like, upper body in one arm and legs in the other? He doesn't remember, so I can say I did that and it could be true because he doesn't remember.
Tyler, I carried you up the stairs like a lady.
>.>
-
She says she "carried" him but really, Linds just grabbed him by the scruff of the neck and dragged him up the stairs.
-
Both those options work for me!
-
this is what happens when you get super drunk with the internet.
also this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LryglorhmZs#t=02m02s)
tr2nnocon (man that does not really work in lowercase does it) folks, consider this your official warning
-
I'd hit it.
-
I may be in toronto next tuesday or wednesday.
-
Sorry, I'm in France without a reliable internet connection at the moment (I'm resorting to a McDonalds to surf a bit now). Tomorrow I'm off to Vancouver, and then back to Montreal on the 24th. So long as we plan this for a weekend, I should be able to grab a bus or train to Toronto without any problems. Toronto is probably the best place for this; I only put forward Montreal in case anyone from the Maritimes might be able to make it, but that doesn't seem likely.
So, as far as timing, what works for you folks? I can't do Thanksgiving weekend in October (family obligations), but beyond that, I don't have anything major booked (though I can't predict exam schedules and things).
-
Anytime in late September/early October works for me!
-
since everybody seems to be free to do this almost anytime, maybe what we should do is wait until the folks who are in school start classes so that they can get back to everybody else about their exam schedule and assignment deadlines and so on, and then from there we can pick a date that works best for us. like mentioned earlier i live very close to toronto and am there all the time regardless so the date/time is really not going to stop me from being there whatsoever.
-
For this I would consider making a long weekend of it
-
Wait Tyler are you going to come?
-
What are the long weekends for the fall?
-
The only ones are Labour Day and our Thanksgiving (which is different from the US, obviously).
-
Or ones where I take off a day or two from classes and work
-
do not let this die! it is a good idea!
-
hey what about a vancouvercon?
-
maybe not right now, but ask me again in 2011
-
I think Tania's right that we should wait until classes have started to plan dates. It wouldn't be good to decide upon something only to have half the people back out do to midterms and things.
-
My, my. I live kind of close to Toronto, and I would like to meet the internet! I don't have my passport right now, though, and I live in the USA. I've got everything I need, I just need to get down to the post office and get it done. Too bad I'm lazy. After my big test, I'll probably drop everything off, but I don't know if I'll get it in time to meet up with you crazy people.
-
Too bad I'm lazy.
once you post in any con thread about being able to attend, you pretty much have to. i am sorry but that is the rule of forum meetups and it is unflinchingly rigid.
-
Then the event must happen about a month in the future, and no sooner. I'll get it in this week if I am sober at any point after Wednesday at noon.
-
Who's downtown? I'm kicking around with nothig to do between 8-10 tonight, text or call 519 *number removed* if you want.
-
so this probably could have gone in the music subforum except i didn't really want to start a new thread and i figure most of the people who check this thread are going to be people in and around toronto anyway, so it's going here instead - but i thought you'd all like to know that the toronto international film festival (http://www.tiff.net) runs from september 10 to september 19 and, as part of a whole series of free events being presented at yonge and dundas square, deerhoof are playing a free show on september 17 (http://exclaim.ca/articles/generalarticlesynopsfullart.aspx?csid1=115&csid2=844&fid1=40706).
i am of course going to be here and i've love to hang out with anyone else who will be in attendance but if deerhoof isn't your thing, check out the other free events that will be running during the week. the film festival only happens once a year and it's amazing fun.
-
COUNT ME OUT.
-
I will be visiting Tronno in March to visit UofT. I know that's very far in the future, but if there's interest then y'all could help me choose Tronno over Montreal.
-
Man, Mike offered to pay for that and he never did. Goddammit.
Wait, what?
-
I will be visiting Tronno in March to visit UofT. I know that's very far in the future, but if there's interest then y'all could help me choose Tronno over Montreal.
Not interested. You should come to Montreal.
And I'm pretty sure calenlass was talking about the impounded car.
-

as much as i'd love to hang out in march, if you're talking about choosing which city to go to university to then my vote goes to montreal too. toronto is exciting to explore with friends once in a while but ultimately a pretty hectic and congested place to live, and the university's not much better.
-
And I'm pretty sure calenlass was talking about the impounded car.
Wonder if I can still reimburse for that.
-
I've grown up in Montreal, and I'd like to spend some time in english Canada. Plus McGill is not my scene.
-
There's Concordia.
But really, I may not be the best to give that advice (I'm not finished with High School), but just finish studying in Montreal and you'll travel to wherever you want to go after.
-
So, have people started to get a sense of their exam and assignment schedules?
-
Classes don't even start for me until Monday. I haven't even finalized my schedule yet. This is why I was surprised to hear that american kids start school in August!
P.S. that said I will totally state my schedulin' things when I know them next week.
-
hmm. i guess i'll try to make it, but i don't post here that much.
-
I have no exams that require a ton of prep, and if I have essays... I'll work around other peoples' dates. I think that Tyler was saying late November/early December works for him, so I'm voting around then.
-
McGill was silly and started on September first this year. It looks like I should be having a similar experience to Allison though. Most of my midterms are mid October, though I think I have one or two in early November.
-
If we're talking early december, the sixth-through-eighth are free for me between lectures and exams, with the options of extending later if I don't have finals right away.
-
i'm not going back to school until january, so at the moment i don't have an exam schedule that you guys need to take into account.
-
My midterm dates:
October 19
October 27
November 2
November 10
I have heard people mention both Nuit Blanche (October 3) and American Thanksgiving (November 26th) as possible dates to base things around. Both would work quite well for me, I think. Nuit Blanche actually doesn't work for me, as it is during Pop Montreal, and I will be busy seeing lots of music.
Thoughts?
-
american thanksgiving should be fine and dandy with me!
-
If it was American Thanksgiving I could maybe possibly attend!
-
DONE AMERICAN THANKSGIVING WINS
-
Oh hey
-
Man, I was thinking about just showing up to this at the last minute, but fuck you guys. Thanksgiving weekend is the worst time in the entire year to fly anywhere.
-
It really is, but I talked it over with my friend (who's got family working for United and has pretty much the same sort of setup that you used to have Katie) and she said that depending on airline policy, international flights might not be so bad. I'm certainly not opposed to a few hours of aggravation in exchange for a few days in Toronto.
Oh btw could anybody put me up for the duration? I'll cook things for you!
-
I have family engagements on American Thanksgiving. I think I've promised to play the chef this year, too.
-
So how does american-rules thanksgiving work? It's a thursday? And is the subsequent Friday a day off too, then?
I can whip up some pumpkin and sweet-potato pies, as I've been doing annually for Canadian thanksgiving, though my birthday is the 27th so I may want to be in Waterloo for that.
-
For those of us in school, I believe we get an extended period of time off, usually the whole week, although it could just be that I'm dumb and thinking of high school when college works differently. My memory just isn't that good.
-
Depends on the university, John. Typically those on the semester system get the entire week, while those on quarters just get a couple of days.
-
I can host a feast, perhaps.
-
Depends on the university, John. Typically those on the semester system get the entire week, while those on quarters just get a couple of days.
What!? Holy crap. I've always had the day before, the day of, and the day after only.
-
Yeah, I've only ever had the Thursday and Friday off. Never the whole week.
-
Both the universities I have attended (WSU and UConn) have the whole week off. Usually this is balanced by starting earlier or a shorter winter break.
-
from experience i feel pretty confident telling everyone that james makes the best turducken.
james i order you to make a turducken for us for american thanksgiving.
-
Both the universities I have attended (WSU and UConn) have the whole week off. Usually this is balanced by starting earlier or a shorter winter break.
Damn, because my undergrad institution (College of Charleston) stated one of the earliest I've seen (I think the last full week of August), lasted about as late as everywhere else, and started back up around the same time, or a little before all of the other places that my friends went. I think we got boned on the whole vacation time thing.
-
I am down for that tania but I will need a kitchen at least one (preferably two) pairs of hands that don't mind taking dead birds apart and around $100.
-
I can host a feast, perhaps.
However, my oven is a fossil. That may be a problem.
-
Shall we nail down some dates/times?
-
american thanksgiving seems to be the best timeframe, but i think scheduling it for the weekend before or after (probably before) makes a bit more sense than for the actual week so that students don't have to worry about missing classes and any american visitors can hopefully avoid family time conflicts. by my watch that is the weekend of either november 20th - 23rd or november 27th - 30th.
do either of those dates work for everybody?
-
i'd be fine with either of those dates.
-
The weekend before before works best for me. I'll likely be heading in to Toronto on the 19th anyway, since my mom is giving a reading at the library. If the next weekend does turn out to be the only workable one for some people though, I may still be able to do that.
-
so is this definitely happening on the weekend before american thanksgiving, then? i'm thinking the time has come for me to make arrangements to take the time off work and i'd much rather do this sooner than later.
-
OK I am in for the weekend before american thanksgiving, being Friday the 20th through Sunday the 22nd.
-
I'm in.
-
I am getting the tickets soon.
Let me know who all is coming so I can craft the voodoo dollsdetermine what to bring for the nice people.
-
Just get everybody the same gift.
-
Restraining orders.
-
This is fast approaching dudes. Any ideas as to activities and whatnot?
-
The Rural Alberta Advantage is playing Lee's Palace on the 20th. I'd hit that.
-
Alright someone with more organizational skill than myself needs to take control here and make some solid plans, yeah?
-
8:00pm -3:00am Go to C'est What and drink and eat far too much
3:00am- 6:00am Rock Band 2
6:00am - 2:00pm Coma
2:00pm - 8:00pm Be hung over and surly
See how easy it is!!
-
Only if you're a folk singer, Tommy. :|
-
Man what is with people and C'est What.
-
Something about it being a brew pub that pushes Canadian beers, and has live music, and board games, and pool and good vittles.
If there are other places like that in downtown Toronto, I don't know about 'em (please tell me though).
-
i really think we need to have a pancake dinner at some point too.
have you guys ever had pancakes for dinner? because oh man oh goodness pancake dinners are so much better than pancake breakfasts it is stupid.
-
oh oh oh we should go ice skating too!
-
And then maybe after everyone can take turns talking about a boy they really like. It will be the bestest slumber party evar!!!!
-
Pancakes and bacon for supper were what we had when mom was tired from work and didn't want to make anything more complicated. It was like the best treat in the world.
-
That was what we would eat when my dad would make dinner because my mom was busy with work or something. Always great nights. I am fully in favour of pancake dinners.
Sounds like some good stuff. Ice skating would be a blast. How expensive do skate rentals tend to be? Would it be worth bringing my own skates?
-
Depends where you go. It's super cheap at Nathan Phililps, but I don't think that rink will be open yet. I'll check out some other places.
So how does this look so far:
Rural Alberta Advantage - Friday
Ice Skating - Saturday
Pancake Dinner - Saturday
Shopping (John needs jeans, I am told) - Saturday
Any objections?
-
It's always good to take your own skates as they'll fit a lot better and probably be sharper too.
-
Yeah, for sure, but it's also another bag to travel with for only an hour or two of use.
-
I don't know how to ice skate and I know I'll just be learning how not to fall down by the time everybody wants to go somewhere else :[
-
It will be cute and we will have many laughs because of your suffering. Woo!
-
So I do not know how interested people are in Rural Alberta Advantage but they have MP3s here (http://www.theraa.com/audio.html). Also their drummer is the drummer for woodhands if that means anything to anybody's perception of their worth as a band.
-
i am totally definitely up for rural alberta advantage but i still do not know if i actually have the entire weekend off work yet, so i can't give a solid commitment yet. it is 99% likely i will be there though, i will know soonish.
tickets are only $13.50 but it looks like they are being sold via ticketmaster so it is actually going to be closer to about $20 per person :(
-
That's not bad, but if this is anything like Chicagocon I'll be making my way into the city around the time y'all are at the show. But it might be different - I don't have much control over the time I leave.
-
also here are some other recommendations:
- art gallery of ontario
- royal ontario museum
- ontario science center
- casa loma
- shopping at kensington market
- gorging on chocolate and ice cream at soma (http://www.somachocolate.com/) - they make the best hot chocolate ever
- go to beaches, get drunk, black out, wake up with sand everywhere
(i will probably do the last two regardless of whether or not anyone else decides to come with me)
-
Casa Loma? More like Casa Lame-a
May I also suggest:
-- Rent some bicycles at http://communitybicyclenetwork.org/ and go on a bike tour
-- Comedy at Second City (http://www.secondcity.com/?id=theatres/toronto/mainstage/schedule) (students get in for $15 most of the time)
-- Distillery District (http://www.thedistillerydistrict.com/frameset.html)
-
yeah i don't really care about casa loma either, i just figured i would throw that in there on the off chance that somebody might later go "aw man you guys why didn't we do casa loma in toronto, if i had known about that i would have gone" and then i would have to be all "uuugh okay fine i am sorry we did not see the dumb castle" but i am not really keen on seeing the big dumb castle either to be honest.
-
I don't really know anything about Casa Loma. It is basically just a house that you can tour, that happens to be a castle? This is what I've gotten from ten seconds on wikipedia.
I am down with checking out as museum or gallery or something though, if others are up for it. Also, beaches would be spectacular. Montreal is without sand, and after living in Vancouver for so long, I've gone in to a sort of waterfront withdrawal.
-
Can we drink on the beaches on the islands? I would totally sneak hooch onto the islands and drink on the beaches in the cold and the wind but I do not know if that is everyone else's thing.
-
Sounds like a wonderful excuse to bring my flask.
-
oh man seriously you guys are the best internet friends ever
-
On November 21st there is a learn-to-skate at Harbourfront Centre. We can go to that!
-
i haven't skated since i was uh...9 or 10? so maybe a refresher course would be helpful?
however, i might not be able to come to all of the fun tr2nnocon activities because i am currently being a hermit and doing nanowrimo. but i would definitely want to have a pancake dinner with you guys.
-
doop doop doop bumpin' this thread so you guys don't forget about it doop doop
-
Okay, how are people fitted up for accommodation? I reckon I will crash with at my aunt & uncle's place, does everyone else who's coming in have something sorted or what?
Also is Tyler alive? Is he coming?
-
I am also planning to go the Aunt and Uncle route. Really looking forward to this.
-
Don't know about Tyler, but if John manages to make it, he will be couch surfin' chez moi!
-
So it will be Allison, James, Tania, Anna (for a bit at least), John, pilsner, and me? I don't even have the slightest clue what is up with Tyler.
-
i am staying in markham (ugh) but i also have a car (yay!), which is essentially useless in toronto because the cost of gas and parking is outrageous compared to the cost of just buying a day or week pass for the ttc and also who wants to drive in disgusting congested toronto traffic anyway but i guess it could be useful if anyone wants to do anything outside downtown toronto (the only thing i can think of is going to the zoo again so probably not).
-
I might just come in for the day. I'm new here anyway.
-
I had an inclass quiz rescheduled for the morning of the 20th, which means I can't skip classes that day. Should be getting in on the Friday evening then.
-
yo i have my schedule for next week finally and i definitely 100% for sure have friday and saturday off (i am still not sure about sunday and monday yet but there should be no problems there either as far as i know) so i am totally up for rural alberta advantage on friday. is anybody else in besides me and james?
-
oh hey is the show sold out? Soundscapes says they're sold out. I will look into this when I am back from writing an imminent exam.
-
So the Soundscapes website says they are sold out, Rotate This still has tickets? Tania are you around downtown ever and would be able to grab tickets or do you stay in the north always?
-
I can grab tickets when I'm downtown, but that won't be til Monday.
-
i am downtown tomorrow and i will try to grab tickets then but i am going to get only three (me, allison, james) unless this number is modified by about 4pm on friday
-
What time is the show supposed to be? I should be arriving by around 5 or 6 on Friday, and would need an hour or so to get to my aunt's and drop off my stuff, but I would love to go.
-
i'm not going to that show, but you guys have fun!
oh speaking of shows, does anyone besides me like/plan on going to see peaches?
-
rural alberta advantage was sold out by the time i got to rotate this, sadly, but the good news is that i found out from talking to the dude working there that two of my favourite localish bands, the magic (http://www.myspace.com/themagiclove) and parlovr (http://www.myspace.com/parlourmontreal), are playing friday november 20th and sunday november 22nd respectively. both shows are $5 at the door or pay what you can.
if i had to pick only one i would probably pick parlovr, they are lots of fun live and sound kind of like the arcade fire's first ep except louder and with more banging on things but i would be down with going to either one or both of these if anyone else is.
-
peaches is hells of novel but not terribly exciting to me? I'm sure it'll be a good show I just don't expect that I'll want to pay the ticket price to see her.
-
it's $24.50 which doesn't seem too unreasonable to me.
but if you don't think it's worth it, no big deal, i might be going with a real life acquaintance anyway!
tania, i will check out the bands the bands you mentioned later. i would consider going to see one, but not both because i'm still trying to do nanowrimo and that pretty much eats up all of my spare time.
-
You guys should go see the Magic fo sho.
-
Parlovr are great live guys. Really. I've seen them open for Franz Ferdinand and I'm gonna go see them open for We Are Wolves. You should go see them.
-
So I e-mailed The Rural Alberta Advantage asking if they could slip us in to the show anyways because I really liked them at Hillside and my friends and I were looking forwards to seeing them play and I'd promise to buy some merch/discs if they could help us out, and I just got a reply saying that their guest list is all full for the Toronto show but he could put us on guest list if we wanted to come to London the following night.
On the one hand I am dissapointed that my genius scheme to go to the show failed, on the other hand I am very pleased that this dude would be willing to guest list a stranger who wanted to come to his show. I guess it is to be expected that their guest list would already be full in Toronto but hey I'm happy that he replied and would guest us in London.
p.s. I am trying to somehow work into my reply e-mail that we're a get-together from the internet converging on toronto with a dude coming in from montreal and a dude coming in from whereverthehellyoulive kvp but I am finding it hard to do so without sounding really lame. Will try harder!
-
so even though i booked friday off i still somehow got roped into working which kind of blows but luckily it is only until 2pm so i still have the evening off. does anyone want to do anything friday before seeing the magic (if anyone wants to go see them with me maybe), like dinner or drinks or something? i think it would be nice to get together beforehand since the show does not start until like 11pm and i have most of the evening off anyway and it looks like all of the attendees will be here by friday evening.
also i am working crazy hours now on account of having booked the weekend off (even though they made me work friday regardless, what the heck is up with that?) so if i'm not online when anyone needs me to be and you're in the toronto area you can call or text me at 416 909 6676 and i will do my best to get back to you pronto.
-
Yeah I am totally down. Any good ideas on places nearby the venue?
-
Sup y'all.
So I can't make it on Friday. I can possibly make it on Thursday evening and definitely on Saturday night, but given the amount of money this is going to cost me I'd rather not show up on Saturday night and only hang out on Sunday. It's just not worth it.
So I'm planning on Thursday evening. Man it's going to be hectic. I have three assignments due and I have to go straight from school to the airport. Funnnn.
-
The Beaches/Bluffs is good times as is the west end out by the Humber. So is the ROM or the Ontario Science Centre. Otherwise, I endorse drinking at random places around Bloor and Bathurst.
-
I gotta work on Friday, til 4:30. What's the plan afterward?
-
Go to New York.
-
Forget that, the street meats are better right here. Bonus: no subway rats.
-
the magic are playing at 11pm at wrongbar which is located on 1279 queen street, between lansdowne and dufferin. i don't know the area too well but i have heard great things about golden turtle (vietnamese), the rhino (burgers) and shanghai cowgirl (basically everything) which are all located within 10-15 mins walking distance of the venue. i am really not picky about food though so if anyone else has suggestions, fire away.
-
Still waiting for confirmation on the flight...
-
Still nothing. It's getting into the late night and where my friend lives they've got high winds and snow showers and they only have internet at work, so I'm going to assume from this point that the flight has not been arranged and I can't make it. Fuck.
-
That is a shame dude. Could you try stand-by? We might not be worth trying to fly stand-by though.
I would be happy with any of those food things tania. I am kind of leaning towards the place called 'shanghai cowgirl' because that is a great thing for a place to be called.
-
Tania, of those three, I've only been to Golden Turtle but it is rock solid pho. More food than you want for under 8 dollars, yeah it's good stuff. Also wrongbar wrocks, or so I'm told.
-
Sam why do you have to be so right all the time. Doesn't that get boring.
-
Pho fo' sho'.
-
NO WAIT JUST KIDDING I leave in 3 hours.
-
Awesome!
I'm going to try to catch the 11 o'clock bus tomorrow, which should get me to Toronto sometime around 6. I'll be up for dinner, if you're all planning to do it later than that.
-
The timing of this was woeful. Next week both Devo and Steely Dan are playing in Toronto.
-
devo are actually playing this weekend too but i wrote it off because i figured by the time i found out tickets would have been long gone anyway.
-
Craigslist has the tickets going for 55$. I just want to go on the record saying that if it were a choice between Devo live and colonic irrigation I would say "Whip it" (referring to my colon).
-
whoooooo! So, what we thinking on eating? I am down with vietnamese but I eat viet-thai often but if it's cheap I'm down like a gown. A gown that was on your mother but is no longer on your mother because I took it off of her because we are going to bone.
I'm probably going to be ditching a bag and a loaf of bread at my aunt's place. You guys want to say, eat at seven thirty? I am not sure if I'll be able to be around earlier than that as bussing from Waterloo to Toronto on a Friday is a pain.
CELL PHONE POOL: I am five-one-nine 721 4862.
-
six four seven 408 5550
-
nine seven zero 776-6055. I'm not sure if there's anything additional what with me being a 'merican and all.
-
Growing and uh, Marduk will be in town next week if any of you want to hit up any shows by the way.
-
My number is **********. I'll be leaving for the bus station shortly. Hopefully I'll be able to get on an early bus. If not, I could be arriving pretty late in the evening. I'll phone or send a message to someone when I'm getting close to Toronto, and when I've dropped off my bags and things at my aunt and uncle's.
-
nine seven zero 776-6055. I'm not sure if there's anything additional what with me being a 'merican and all.
There ain't aside from a 1 on most phone plans. Jebus is this your first trip to Canadiana?? Make sure you only text while you're here or the roaming fees will ream you. I used to have to pay something like $1.50 a minute on Verizon I think.
-
Rhino is also pretty terrific - huge selection of beers. If you get well sauced, walk across the street to the Cadillac Lounge - good party.
-
guys, i am not coming because i'm pretty upset about some insignificant things and just need to sulk and mope alone for a bit. sorry.
but hey, those of you who are in tronno on a regular basis can hang out with me some other time, if you wish to do so.
-

So I nearly hopped the 10:30 bus back to Toronto to catch that parlovr show but I am in fact glad I did not because I just realized an assignment I thought due Wednesday is due Monday!
Anyways, nice seeing you kids. Lots of good food I ate this weekend. And the skating was fun and shit. Basically I had a trip to Toronto centered around sitting in restaurants and burning my disposable income.
