Title: Space Hulk, you bastards!

If you're unaware of what Space Hulk is, take ALIENS and turn the badassitude up to about 11.

An actual rare occurrence.

Genetically engineered Roman Catholic super-monks wielding rapid-fire rocket launchers fight that can survive being stepped on by mechs that would put Gundam to shame getting ripped up by roughly man-sized six-limbed aliens.

This game was pretty awesome for a lot of reasons:

- It was a complete game as you bought it. Not spending ridiculous amounts of money on compiling an army. This would count as "standard", not "awesome", if we weren't talking about Games Workshop.
- The rules were simple and flexible.
- The timer system for the Space Marine player created one hell of a lot of tension.
- Even the Genestealer player doesn't technically know the amount of monsters they have at their disposal until the "Blip Counters" are revealed.
- The board, as it were, was completely modular.
- There's no "standard" game of Space Hulk, as every game has a specific mission in mind.

The models that came with the original game were pretty static. This is no longer the case.

This is basically the best thing Game Workshop have done in the longest time, and I guess it's a little depressing that it's essentially a re-release of a classic product. What isn't depressing is Space Hulk, you bastards.

It really isn't the same unless you have someone to make awful Sci-Fi references to.

Whilst Space Hulk was good, it's ultimately from Games Workshop who are a naughty bunch of people. Don't be sucked in by their twee plastic idols of evil.

Seriously if you like Space Hulk and you haven't already pre-ordered your kit from your LGS then you are fucking stupid and you should go pre-order right now. I've seen the set, it is fantastic. The models are all great looking (despite being Blood Angels) and the board is made of good, thick cardstock, same as the various tokens. It is well worth the $100.

Seriously, go pre-order right now. Stephen, Eric Hamhands, I am talking to you when I say this.

what is wrong with Blood Angels

Man, there ain't nothin wrong if you want your marines to be all sparklin and stuff.
Sergeant Lorenzo, Commander Dante, Chapter Master Edward... its all good, no one judges that you didn't pick one of the cool chapters like Salamanders or Imperial Fists or Raven Guard or any of the other founding chapters that you can run out of a real rulebook (excluding Ultramarines, fuck those guys).

I always envisioned the Blood Angels as a whole Chapter made of this guy. (http://s.bebo.com/app-image/7925364218/5411656627/PROFILE/i.quizzaz.com/img/q/u/08/03/23/10396479-Alucard.jpg)

I guess the Salamanders are alright.

I've seen a copy at my FLGS. It's good to have a friend as a manager. It does look very nice.
However, I have a friend who has a 2nd edition copy and I don't see the need to pay $100 dollars for the new one.
Especially since most of my money is going to Games Workshop via the pusherman known as Fantasy Flight Games. I am buying Rogue Trader, Chaos in the Old World, Warhammer: Invasion, and I will pick up the 3rd edition of Warhammer Fantasy Role-playing when it comes out.

Gorkamorka is the best gamesworkshop game.

Actually, that honor belongs to Necromunda.

I love Gorkamorka's theme to bits, but in the end I do have to throw in my lot with Necromunda.

I agree with Necromunda over Gorkamorka a slight bit.  Necromunda is what got me to enter a Games Workshop store my first time.

p.s.  It's a re-release, but are any of the rules different?  Because I have the old one, and it's awesome.

p.p.s.  Is it sad that I recognized that picture?

1. The re-release of Space Hulk hasn't been, uh, re-released yet. It will be on the 5th of September. I think it's pretty safe to assume that the rules will be the same as in Space Hulk classic, although the inclusion of the Librarian, Assault Terminator Squad and Broodlord implies that elements from the two expansions may be included.

2. It is not sad but totally rockin'.

The only tabletop game I ever played was Warhammer 40K and some variant. I should change this.

I wonder how the other races would play into this. I bet the Elder would be neat to use in the place of Space Marines. Might be more Stealth set but thats not that bad.

I never played it. But I liked it, in theory. It's just that I could never find anyone else who wanted to play it.

For me, this defeats the purpose. Space Hulk is a satire of ALIENS, so you instantly lose the theme when you change a race (even if Marines are replaced by Guard, because a part of the lulz of 40k is that everything is so overblown).

There was a game called Space Crusade which was in many ways similar to Space Hulk, except it was based upon boarding actions into enemy vessels. It included Marines, Chaos, Orks, Tyranids and what would later come to be known as Necrons ("Chaos Androids" at the time). If you ever wanted to play Space Hulk with different races, then it might be worth downloading the rules to Space Crusade instead and see if it hasn't been done already.

I remember a one-off mission for Space Hulk that was printed in an issue of White Dwarf way back when, which was specifically designed for normal space-marines instead of Terminators.

Um, I mean, I don't know what you nerds are talking about.

I wanted to play it so badly, and I was getting a game together with a bunch of my friends, but it just never got off the ground.  It was going to be so badass.

Was it?

Or was it going to be another good idea poorly executed, undersupported, and overpriced by the evil empire that would lead to much frustration?

I want this quite badly, I'm just not sure I can justify it when $100 will get me Battlestar Galactica, the Pegasus expansion for it and Bridge Troll/Deadlands: The Battle for Slaughter Gulch.

Seeing as 10 Terminators and a Librarian would set you back around that much anyway, it's not that bad a price.

Oh, I was just going to use 40k models and terrain.  You can modify the distances so that it all works just fine.  The campaign I'd thought up was really cool, too.

FYP.

If my memory's correct, we have

2 x Captains
1 x Assault Terminator w/ Lightning Claws
1 x Heavy Flamer Terminator
1 x Assault Cannon Terminator
6 x Tactical Termintors
1 x Librarian

One of the Captains is armed with a Thunder Hammer and Storm Shield. Fuck yeah. Looks like the deployment rules of this will be along the lines of the expansions, where there was a very simple point-buy system.

Sensible. Well, relatively, if you see what I mean.

The new version includes a timer. That would make it more like 1st edition than 2nd edition.
IIRC the Space Marine player got 2 minutes plus 30 secondss for a sergeant or a librarian to do their turn. If they lost a sergeant or librarian than they lost the 30 seconds.
The genestealer player had no time limit.
I will now stop looking at it lest I change my mind and order the damn thing.

Oh god oh god oh god oh god.

They've re-released Space Hulk?

I've got to admit I'm not really a fan of Warhammer stuff in general, but Space Hulk is awesome as hell.
