Title: Celtic music
Post by: MadassAlex on 09 Sep 2009, 03:57
Evening, QC.

I've been interested in celtic music for some time now, but I've never really been able to find a good lead into the genre. This has become especially pressing since I just started playing violin, and I want to work the celtic style into the most basic way I play the instrument as I learn.

Can anyone point me in the direction of some more, uh, "powerful" celtic music? I was pointed to a bit of The Chieftains, but was left disappointed with the vocal emphasis and how the other instruments seldom made powerful statements of their own. I suppose I'm looking for melodic music in the vein of this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGjEo4t6KWA&feature=channel_page).

Let's also use this thread to talk about celtic music in general, if anyone pleases.

Loreena McKennitt is the most Celtic musician I can think of at the moment.

The Celts Rise Again (http://www.amazon.com/Celts-Rise-Again-Various-Artists/dp/B000009DPY)
Green Linnet 20th Anniversary Collection (http://www.amazon.com/Green-Linnet-20th-Anniversary-Collection/dp/B000005CM2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1252548208&sr=1-1)

Two of the best Celtic compilations, IMHO.

I really, really enjoy this (fairly generically-named) CD called "Celtic Dance" released by "Narada World". It doesn't sound like much but it is excellent.

I'd go with Loreena too.

Other things I would recommend are mix forms of something celtic and, well, metal. And:

a. Khar knows more.
b. Not sure you want it.

Well, I don't listen to them much myself, but if you want to mix Celtic and punk, the Dropkick Murphys are pretty good at it.

Emish does some pretty awesome Celtic punk. Actually, straight from their website:

Quote
Their influences include traditional Irish, classical, jazz, rock and punk. They create an incredible chemistry by rocking out traditional Irish tunes mixed with some of their own original pieces as well as classic Irish ballads.

I'll be seeing them for the second time next week.

They seem to be getting away from the punk side more and more lately, sadly. Still one of my all-time favorite bands, though.

Right now, I'd say if you want celtic punk, try Flatfoot 56. I saw them open for Street Dogs last fall and they were INSANE.
