Title: Greatest Album of the Decade Tournament, ROUND TWO
Post by: E. Spaceman on 13 Sep 2009, 18:46
Ok, votes have been tallied and done up real pretty. Infinite thanks to rob (thepiedpiper) for actually doing all the work.

There were originally 4 ties but what we decided is that there were only two sets of votes that fell out of thhe period for only a few hours. We counted those and the ties were all broken. This won't happen again though.

The matchups now are:

When voting please make sure to list both album and artist. It makes counting easier.

Deadline: 23:59 sunday 20th

Ooooh, fancy graphics.  I might come back and vote in this post later.  When's the deadline, by the way, or did I miss it?

Arcade Fire - Funeral
vs
Sufjan Stevens - Come on Feel the Illinoise!

This should be interesting.

Nice graph by the way. Very fancy. Pretty colors.

I'm pleasantly surprised that Franz Ferdinand made it to the second round. Although, considering the forums taste, I don't think it'll go further. But we never know.

Man, I wish I was a bit more versed in music in general.  I mean, I won't honestly be able to post a vote until I listen to all of these albums, and I do not think I have the time to.  It seems pretty impossible.

Okay I only JUST noticed The Earth is Not a Cold, Dead Place vs. Our Endless Numbered Days. Christ.

I just immediately put Iron & Wine down because it is like my favourite album ever (one of only two I can think of off-hand that I love dearly and completely without hesitation (the other is Graceland)) but goddamn. I lost my virginity to The Earth is Not a Cold, Dead Place for crying out loud! There's a lot of sentimentality involved in that!

I stand by my choice. But still looking at the other guy and winking at him and passing him my number on a napkin because I can still have them both, right?

Grumble grumble Botch got voted out you all suck grumble. Sadly, this one was really easy. A lot of voting for the OK over the bad or marginal preferences between two alrightish records, one occasion where they were both so boring I genuinely couldn't care less who wins and in the very few occasions where I liked both records there was always one that was a clear winner for me.

final showdown will be The Argument vs Discovery (maybe Since I Left you will sneak in instead though which would be awesome)

Guys if you are not fucking voting for fucking Fugazi I will tear your fucking head off. Spoon? What the fuck is that shit? Is that some fucking indie pop? I don't even fucking know. All I know is it doesn't beat fucking Fugazi in any fucking aspect of any music except fucking being shit.

Fugazi was one of the reasons I had to stop listening to things.  I just couldn't take it any more.  Spoon was a welcome respite from bands that made me want to go out and begin committing indiscriminate murder.

E! (and scarred?) I am glad to see that you have continued on in this endeavor. Although I am heartbroken over the lack of commentary about the winners and losers of the last match. HEARTBROKEN I SAY>

Anywho.

Radiohead - Kid A (Takk isn't even my third favorite Sigur Ros album)
The Weakerthans - Reconstruction Site (I have to vote against Yoshimi on principle. I was never impressed by that album at all.)
The Books - The Lemon of Pink (So very, very disappointed that Trail of Dead didn't beat Franz. C'mon, people. Double-u tee eff.)
Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (Oh, Fugazi. You were so 90s.)

Low - Things We Lost in the Fire (I haven't heard either of these albums. How the hell did MONO beat Yeah Yeah Yeahs? I am appalled.)
Death From Above 1979 - You're a Woman, I'm a Machine (Great, great disc. "Romantic Rights" could have been the only song on that album and I'd still be voting for it here.)
Battles - Mirrored (Pleasantly surprised that this beat out Leviathan. Tons of amazing songs on this disc. Catchy when it shouldn't be. Straight-forward when you wouldn't expect. Amazing.)
Death Cab for Cutie - Transatlantacism (I thought this could have been a big upset, thought Lightning Bolt could have pulled it out. Truth is, though, I'm a little emo bitch at heart.)

LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver (HOW DID ICKY THUMP MAKE IT AND NOT WHITE BLOOD CELLS!?!?!!!111oneoneoneeleven. That is all.)
Mountain Goats - All Hail West Texas (Daft Punk is not my favorite type of dance music. Anywho, I'd rather hear John Darnielle spin tales about Denton Death Metal bands anyday.)
Iron & Wine - Our Endless Numbered Days (I'd have gone with The Creek Drank the Cradle over Our Endless Numbered Days.)
Broken Social Scene - You Forgot It In People (Grizzly Bear can be so boooooring sometimes.)

TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain (I'm not sure I get the mclusky hype.)
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm (No love for Mastodon in the first round, wow.)
The Postal Service - Give Up (I listen to more songs on Give Up than I listen to on Turn On the Bright Lights.)
Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? (Kind of sad the Knife beat Hercules and Love Affair, but it wouldn't have changed the outcome of this match.)

The Decemberists - Castaways & Cutouts (Another cerebral songwriter vs. Daft Punk. I go the same way as last time. It happens.)
Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy (Oh, what a fucking killer of a matchup. Black Sheep Boy holds a special place in my heart for some chillingly close-to-the-bone sentiments.)
Isis - Panopticon (I held out beleagured hope for Voxtrot here. Either way, I'm not a real Animal Collective guy, to be honest.)
Girl Talk - Feed the Animals (Hahahaha. These two albums going against each other is perfect. Didn't even realize I had set that up.)

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Yr Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven (What the hell is an Eluvium? Gotta say the lack of respect for pop and hip-hop on this board is bewildering.)
Stars - Set Yourself on Fire (Kind of expected M83 to win in the first round. Like I said, I'm not a real big Animal Collective guy, that applies for side-projects, too.)
Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene (I think the three seed had the worst first round of any other seed.)
Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica (Ahh, here's where all the M83 votes went. No love for Gorillaz in the first round, either.)

Elliott Smith - From A Basement on the Hill (Not near Elliott's best work but - Oh, is this a theme? - I don't like Animal Collective
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (Thought about voting last round for Fiona Apple just on the basis of "Not About Love" alone, then I remembered how strong YHF is front to back. Can't believe BMSR beat the Microphones.)
The Strokes - Is This It? (I've always just liked Yo La Tengo. Never loved.)
Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun (Why did Soulwax beat Ted Leo? Why? I am upset.)

Arcade Fire - Funeral (MONSTER matchup here. Hard to believe that Sufjan only barely made it into the tournament. But I love waving my arms around and screaming lines like "I guess we'll just have to adjuuuuuuuuuust!")
Radiohead - In Rainbows (I have nothing interesting to say here.)
Arcade Fire - Neon Bible (Given time to separate Neon Bible from its predecessor, it's actually a very good disc in its own way. I used to not think so, but it has grown on me.)
Mogwai - Mr. Beast (Awww. Unwound, I still love you! It's okay!)

Still kind of in shock and awe about no love for JT, Lil Wayne, Outkast, Gnarls Barkley or any other spectacular myriad pop acts. Really? Dead Meadows is better than Futuresex/Lovesounds? Or Stankonia? Craziness.

"15 Step is now the top selling track from In Rainbows, selling more than double compared to the album’s radio singles."

*sigh*

Well, at least it's not the overall top selling track, right? Let's see, that would be... oh, it's Creep. Never mind.

Honestly I'm surprised about the lack of JT,  (I don't like him but everyone else here basically lost their shit over Futuresex/Lovesounds when it came out which proves we are a petty, petty lot) but apart from that maybe Outkast deserved a gong and I woulda given that for Speakerboxx/Love Below over Stankonia anyway. Gnarls Barkley write great pop music but it is pretty forgettable (I haven't spun either of their albums a month past buying it)

My commentary on the last round is thinking that Nina Nastasia, Beulah and several others recieved few votes while people still think that Sigur Ros are not the most boring band and Animal Collective have anything to offer.

I am hoping that it at least inspired a few people to listen to Nina and Beulah.  If they lost because people didn't give them a chance, that is just silly.

Sigur Rós - Takk... (god damn you for making me make this choice)
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
The Books - The Lemon of Pink (Sucker for The Books. Also helps that I saw them live and it blew my fucking mind. Also they are very nice people.)
Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (sorry, I love this album. sorry fugazi.)

Red
MONO - Hymn to the Immortal Wind
Death from Above 1979 - I'm a Woman, You're a Machine
Battles - Mirrored (Another soul-destroying choice. As much as I love Happy Songs, I have to admit Mirrored is the better album.)
Agalloch - The Mantle

Orange
LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver (no contest.)
The Mountain Goats - All Hail West Texas (The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton. 'nuff said.)
Explosions in the Sky - The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place
Broken Social Scene - You Forgot It In People (And again, my soul is dead. The better album by a MARGIN.)

Green
TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain (One of my favorite albums of all time, no contest)
BORIS - Akuma No Uta (One of the most badass albums I own. Inconceivable to NOT vote for this.)
The Postal Service - Give Up (Guilty pleasure sans the guilt.)
of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? (Lifechanging album right here.)

Blue
Daft Punk - Discovery (If you don't like this album I don't think we can be friends.)
Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy (If this was an award for "most emotionally devastating record of the decade" this would probably win)
ISIS - Panopticon (Sorry Animal Collective, but this is one of my favorite metal albums of all time. In Fiction melts me.)
N/A (I have no opinion on either of these bands.)

Purple
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven (And there goes the only ambient album to make it this far.  :-()
Panda Bear - Person Pitch (Basically an AC album. Fantastic one at that.)
Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene
M83 - Saturdays = Youth (Cannot put into words how happy this album makes me)

Blue
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion (Screw you guys, this is a fantastic album of psych pop. Not the greatest album ever, no, but still emotive and danceable and interesting.)
Black Moth Super Rainbow - Dandelion Gum
Yo La Tengo - I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass
Sigur Rós - Agaetis Byrjun (At least this SR will make it through. Not much else needs to be said about this album. It changed my musical perspective forever.)

Gold
Arcade Fire - Funeral (Still gives me chills)
Radiohead - In Rainbows (Ditto)
Arcade Fire - Neon Bible (Amazing album, deserves way more praise than it gets)
Mogwai - Mr. Beast (Second favorite Mogwai album, which still ranks it above most everything else.)

Not joking at all.

The Blueprint is pretty much the greatest hip-hop album of the decade. Jay is completely on fire on those tracks, spinning ridiculous internal rhymes, jumping from breathing life into hip-hop's tired promiscuity (Girls, Girls, Girls) to one of hip-hop's all time heartbreakers (Song Cry). He spits some of the most intense wordplay in the game and, dammit all if the beats are fantastic, too. Kanye before sped-up soul samples were just an afterthought, Timbaland when he didn't just have to put a robot buzzsaw synth over a track to make it a hit, Just Blaze being fucking Just Blaze. Man, fantastic, fantastic record.

Futuresex/Lovesounds, by the way, is a pop record whose SHORTEST song is OVER FOUR MINTUES LONG. And there are MULTIPLE SEVEN MINUTE PLUS TRACKS. The Timbalake pair pushed each other and pushed each other, and basically set the template for pop and hip-hop's cross-pollination. They were responsible for the first top 40 record since the Beatles to have sitar melodies. JT's voice is, of course, incredible and it pushed boundaries while keeping terrific hooks and the best dance beats this side of Daft Punk.

Gnarls Barkley's debut was the most creative soul music has been since Motown, Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III jumped through more genres (synth-pop on "Shoot Me Down", minimalism on "A Milli", jazz on "Dr. Carter", R&B on "Mrs. Officer") than anything short of a Broken Social Scene record, Outkast crafted classics throughout their entire career, songs that'll be the kind of things that musically define our time. If you say you didn't bob your head at least once to "Hey Ya" or were impressed by Andre 3000's machine-gun flow on "B.O.B." I just straight don't know what to do.

Meanwhile, Dead Meadow's out-of-focus guitar riffage is a bit limp, failing to distinguish itself from a smoky haze, at times and, while interesting texturaly, songs tend to blend together to the point where I can't tell one from the other. Additionally, sometimes their psyche flourishes just bother me (The guitar squeals on "Lady" are fingernails on a chalkboard to me). While the band is obviously comfortable in its mid-tempo groove, it gets a bit stagnant for me, failing to differentiate it self in any real way (Except for "At the Edge of the Wood", which is a prety cool song).

Not to say its a bad record. It's not. But I can't in good conscious say its superior to any of the above.

You should probably see someone about that.

Long songs on a pop record isn't all that novel these days, and it's definitely not a mark of quality. And I can think of a few hip-hop records better than The Blueprint this century (J Dilla's absolutely superb 'Donuts' springs to mind) and I never thought Tha Carter III lived up to the hype though it was solid. Gnarls Barkley didn't impress me at all, and they're the only act you mentioned I might have actually picked the tepid Dead Meadow over.

Donuts is freaking great, agreed. But it takes its amazing technical abilities by sacrificing just the slightest bit of pure listenability for me. I can put Jigga any time any day and just straight out enjoy that record. For Donuts, I have to be a bit more cerebral to get behind it. Dilla's catalog is spectacular front to back, no arguments, and I would definitely vote for that to be on this list, too.

On the other stuff...

*shrugs*

I just can't agree on your assessments on the other records you mentioned. It happens.

(C'mon, people, we know that the track length thing was a way to state that people don't really look at that album. I made other comments about its content so, please, let's try not to Fox News the comment.)

It just really stuck out as odd, partly since you went and put it in bold.

For me, any time Donuts is in danger of getting to cerebral he goes and hits me with a track like the effortlessly swinging 'Time: The Donut Of The Heart' or the sheer unadulterated summertime joy of 'Two Can Win' and the good times are rolling again so it's definitely a record I can fling on any old time. But regardless, I think we can agree that it's pretty pathetic that we haven't got a single hip-hop record into the second round of this thing (and that J Dilla is awesome).

As far as Dead Meadow vs Justin Timberlake goes, one act put together a phenomenal stoner-rock record for 200$ in a garage, whereas the other put together a pretty good (or so I've heard) pop/dance album (which admittedly I have not listened to in its entirety) with a whole lot of studio help and a previous career in a boy band.  One act pens lyrics involving Lovecraftian creatures, and the other act sings about bringing sexy back.

When I listen to the opening strains of Sleepy Silver Door, I am visualizing the trees and mountains uprooting themselves to fight against the Old Ones; when I listen to Sexyback, I visualize some kids found those giant pianos you walk on and started stomping on a few keys at random and repeated that for a while because they thought it sounded cool.  For me to really like a record it has to paint a scene in my mind that captivates me and make me want to stare at it awhile.  It doesn't have to follow a theme, it just has to be pleasing to my inner eye or whatever you want to call it, and Futuresex/Lovesounds doesn't do that for me.

That's the best justification I can offer as to why I would pick Dead Meadow over Futuresex/Lovesounds.  I don't think it's a bad album, it's just not one I like, whether it is superior to the other or not.

Your reasons for preferring the sound of one over the sound of the other are totally fair and that is one of those 'to each their own' deals.

But to hold against Futuresex/Lovesounds that it was recorded in a studio, that JT worked together with Timbaland to put it together and that he used to be in N Sync? I don't think that is fair.

Lo-fi, cheaply done 4-tracked albums and hi-fi, immaculate studio albums can both suck, or they can both be great, it just depends on the songcraft (Look at John Darnielle, he's done both styles and all of his albums kick ass). I've got no qualms with someone liking Dead Meadows over JT, people have their tastes, but I think to hold the manner of its production against it is unwise.

Either way, it was an arbitrary comparison that doesn't really work when trying to critically analyze the two, as it is pretty much apples to oranges.

I always thought that maybe that line was more of a self aware reference about the fact that he used to be a sex symbol but his career had been a bit in the shitter and then he's all listening to some of his new tracks and going "oh shit this is going to get me back on top" and then he wrote a single about it.

Justin Timberlake is in fact the eponymous Sexy and by the sheer fact of singing that song he was 'bringing sexy back'

I don't know about that.  Merriweather Post Pavillion showed a lot of polish and spark that they just didn't possess on their previous two releases.  Then again, MPP is a lot more electronic, almost completely doing away with the guitar.  It's sort of a take it or leave it album because it's basically a album full of really dramatic electronic sounds in contrast with the softer and more gradual production on Strawberry Jam.  I, for one, like them both a good deal and consider them equal in quality, but different in style.

That some people don't like Animal Collective might explain why the album didn't do well.  After all, he was wondering.

And if you want to know why I don't like them, just take those two seconds and expand it to the length of an album.  Are you happier now that I've called Animal Collective "boring"?  Do you find it less offensive?

Finally, most of the posts about the albums were nothing more than "I don't like album x."

(BB I am not calling you retarded there was a whole post between mine and yours and I also find animal collective boring as hell this is not about me defending a band that I like this is about people making this thread really tedious to read because it is basically long lists of bands and then people with boring opinions posting between those giant lists)

Yo Hat I'm gonna let you finish but Khar has voiced the most strongly worded opinions of all time.  Of ALL time.

Also, I'd like to add that your avatar is now Kanye West's main picture on Last.Fm

Oh, I didn't think that you were talking about him.  It all makes sense now.  INTERNET DRAMA!  It's so much better than normal drama by not being better at all.

Maybe people should elaborate on why they like album x vs. album y (which could be due to someone disliking all of band y's albums) a little bit more?

p.s.  Am I already bored of that meme?  Wow.  Usually it takes me way longer.  I don't think I have a short attention sp-

So, I think that we should all be awesome instead of not being awesome.

I know I was thinking that today dude. Like normally I am not tired of memes this quickly but I thought maybe because I have Kanye for an avatar I was taking it personally or something.

actually I've been reading the Satanic Verses this last week and I just got to thinking that I might literally be turning into an avatar of Kanye

Ah, but if someone says:

I'm pretty surprised and puzzled that Elliot Smith might beat MPP.  I mean Elliot is good, but I wonder if this has as much to do with backlash.

That some people don't like Animal Collective might explain why the album didn't do well.  After all, he was wondering.

This.

I guess if you really want my reasoning for not voting for Merriweather Post Pavilion, Hat, then I can give it: that album honestly sounds to me like nothing more than some guy banging furiously on some congas and a keyboard set to autobloop, and occasionally screaming "MYYYYYY GIRRRRRLS" at the top of his lungs.

No, thanks for correcting me. My bad. I always like to make fun of things accurately.

p.s. Just to clarify, I don't have a problem with their existence (unlike, say, the Jonas Brothers), they're just not my thing. And so I will mock them accordingly.
