Title: Evil, Foreign Music
Post by: *Sights* on 20 Sep 2009, 19:06
Since most of the music I listen to is written in English, lately I've been questing for music in different languages. It doens't matter at all whether I can understand the lyrics or not, in fact, things that would probably be standard or lukewarm at best if written in English, sound completely different just by the sound of unknown words.

Case in point,  Wir sind Helden  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mw4OMxYTJpA). Standard pop post-punk, nothing that special really. But...I dunno, everytime I listen to them, I almost feel that the whole genre of post-punk was meant to be written in german, without discrediting any quality english post-punk.

Or Monade (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntxAPPu1sdY), related to Stereolab, Serge Gainsbourg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fGXkT485ic) (I cannot recommend this song enough, by the way). I know, duh, their songs "sound" french because they ARE written in french. But you get what I'm saying right? Hopefully, you do.

I realize that my notions of what these languages are supposed to sound like music-wise revolve around stereotypes, which are not universal, I might add. I also realize the QC userbase is composed mostly of english speakers. But still, you know your music, so...you know what to do. Any good music, any language other than english. I'd prefer it if the genre and the language were not that immediately associated, i.e., scandinavian metal, j-pop, and acts that have achieved some international reknown, Nouvelle Vague and the like, but if you feel it's really outsanding, please go ahead.

PS: Being a native spanish speaker, I already have my share of music written in spanish. But again, do as you please. Perhaps other people are interested in this as well.

So, you want music from other cultures that sounds the same as music from western culture, except with lyrics in a different language?

Well, I really like Yumi Arai (she did two songs from Kiki's Delivery Service)

Acid Mothers Temple are a Japanese band you should absolutely check out if you like psychedelia. A lot of foreign rock artists write in English though...

IMHO, this encompasses most things that are French in nature

Well, yes, purely instrumental is ok and all....but....lyrics were kind of the point.  :-)

Still, suggestions can encompass any culture whatsoever, doesn't matter to me, really.

Tomte is a rather excellent German indie-rock/pop band that I've recently been listening to a lot. A bit generic perhaps (their live shows are actually a lot better than their recorded music) but still cool stuff and well worth checking out!
Case in point:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRVD6iBkZn4&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1pu5TYiCpg&feature=related

Also, Seu Jorge is an awesome Brazilian singer/songwriter. He adapted a lot of David Bowie songs to acoustic guitar and voice, translating the lyrics into Portuguese, for the Life Aquatic soundtrack and made them wholly new and wonderful songs:

Excellent contributions everyone. Everything I've listened by Acid Mothers Temple has been awesome so far. That interpretation of "In C" by Terry Riley was goddamn epic, lyrics or not.

Tomte is also rather excellent as you put it Wombat. I don't understand where most people get from saying german sounds weird and angry. Sung, it just sounds so right. Will get around Seu Jorge in a bit.

Anyway, I'm in the process of listening to everything you suggested, Scarychips. Specially digging Pierre Lapointe.

Keep it up, QC.

The guy who showed this to me was asking me to translate what the raps were about and I had to tell him that it is more important to speak Gangster Rap to understand it rather than French because it's a massive lip service to American Gangster shit except it's elegant cause its French

I mean even my formal French is pretty dogshit let alone whatever French the kids speak but it basically seems like most of his songs  I have are him steppin' to some dude and telling them who he is.

You should (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaySu9M-uFc) totally check (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcXpQ0eIfY4) out Kent (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QLRaY7xnWA&feature=PlayList&p=9A61152ECF9B91A8&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index14=), a Rock/pop band (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bf-ghtbDNgc) with swedish vocals... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D36vx7REiBY&feature=related)
The music is not really complex, but there's something very magical and sad in their tunes... Touching band imo.

Alcest (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLN9TVeJ49s) from France will not hurt either! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_cqIFqyET4&feature=related)

Hope you will like them.

Celeste and Ameoeurs are black metal-tinged francophone bands.

Celeste is a lot like Converge with less crazy time changes, and more dissonance.  You can download their discography for free here. (http://www.denovali.com/celeste/)  'Tis crazy good.

Amesoeurs is like post-hardcore with black metal elements.  One of the members, Neige, is the guy in Alcest (as posted above).  Their lone full-length is in the mediaf!re thread, though I'm not sure if the link still works.

Three words: French. Gangster. Rap.

Word. Keny Arkana (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1WmyfjDIJc La Rage) sounds really good. Maybe its her texts, maybe its the fact that african french people roll their "r" the same hard way like germans.

Another real nice to listen to thing is Arabic metal. Like ArthimotH http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNav2lzd-TQ . Cant really decide if he growls in Faarsi or in any other language.

Something that is pretty popular here in Germany is something called "Russian Disco". Thats either actual russian Popsongs (like Nato http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=la-ROdShb3g ) or Russian-German Groups that make a "Fun" Style Mix between American Pop/HipHop Video Style and sing deliberately in bad english with a russian accent ;o). Example: Miss Platnum - Mercedes Benz: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8D-0aKw5mo

Then, something from Germany - Electro / Synth Music - in best ancestry of Kraftwerk, there is actually DJ Hell (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDItlpU2Mdo )

Oh... and not to forget: German has one big scene of Goth/EBM / Industrial Bands:

Heimataerde: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HciCpnO1iMg
Wumpscut: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMWmawcJkWg

Really? Mmm...I had already heard of Shantel (not really russian I know, but...close) and his brass-band sampling stuff, but he sings in English as far as I know. I had always wondered how russian (or any other slavic languages, for that matter) sounded when sung. The "Underground" soundtrack is my only reference, which I strongly recommend to anyone interested.

Strangely, the song "Trollhammeren" by Finntroll, which I had heard before, is pretty much the only metal song I can think of I would carry around and genuinely enjoy listening to. I am a weakling. Will listen to the stuff Khar posted.

If you like Tomte, maybe you'll like this:

Sir Simon Battle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIoHqRkoLNs), who plays keyboards in Tomte.

Tocotronic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZn93P_KndM), who influenced Tomte a great deal.
They used to be cool. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XifJsTm6XIs)

Then there's Kolossale Jugend (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imwaVOtYd9I) who were a precursor of Tocotronic in the Hamburg scene, musically as well as ideologically.

And now for something completely different: Japanische Kampfhörspiele (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ce64Blg3GWA)

NINA HAGEN.... that is one german female singer that is on the Crazy-o-Meter scale somewhere between Bat-shit and Trout in a privet-hedge....

She is not only an unbelievable singer.... with a smokey voice..

But she can do whatever the sh.. she wants. I mean... there are not much that switch from Punk to Rock and then just say: Ok i get myself a well known classic orchestra and sing german/french/english chansons or lullabies. While in a costume that makes your eyes sore...

Dengue Fever is a psychedelic garage-pop band from Long Beach, CA comprised of a bunch of Americans and a wonderful (and gorgeous) Cambodian frontwoman, Chhom Nimol. Their style is a mix between traditional Khmer pop songs, B-52's space-surf, pumping Farfisa organs, and lo-fi 60s psychedelia nuggets. While their debut and sophomore release are sung entirely by Chhom in her native language, their third release Venus On Earth finds the band incorporating English lyrics and duets with bandleader Ethan Holtzman. In short, a fucking blast. Click the images to download.

How psychedelic garage rock can "not be someone's thing" is non-computable to me. Not trying to be a prick or anything, just saying. Give their most recent (Venus On Earth) a download and give that a chance, it's probably their most accessible. Let me know what you think :)

I couldn't be arsed to download the albums, so I put Dengue Fever into last.fm radio, and after it played me a (pretty decent) DF track it then went on to play loads of cambodian 60's and 70's pop singers who were all without exception killed by the Khmer Rouge, and it was very depressing. It also then went on to play The Red Krayola, which probably means I have to try at least one album.
