Right so I'ma give this a shot.
Basically we have this game Fallout 2.

The way this works is, I start a game of Fallout 2. I post screencaps of the game at various points and then you, the ever so beloved community, makes certain choices. I play out those choices and post the results. This is sort of like the Oregon Trail thread that was posted in the Fish forum.
Anyhow let's get crackling. I'm going to assume y'all know how this works.

Alright so, there are a number of things that have to be sorted out. We've got our name, we've got our age (not really important), our sex, primary attributes, traits, and tag skills.
The way this is going to work is first come first serve, except for some big decisions (arbitrarily chosen by myself) that can be voted on and majority rules (smaller choices can go like this as well if we've got a whole lot of people weighing in).
So first, let me know what we're naming this kid. Then, age and sex. To keep things simple tell me what primary stats you want to see emphasized and to what degree in a range (8-10 cha, or 5-6 int, for example) and dump stats if you think there should be any. The more dump stats there are the higher we can push desirable stats. Next, tell me what traits we're gonna use. You can choose one, two or none.
Then we're gonna do skills. To keep the game from being needlessly difficult I'd like us to have at least one combat skill that can be used in the early running (small guns, unarmed, melee, etc.) the rest of the skills are fair game.
Post your preferences for all of these. That way if someone posts before you do, I can compromise accordingly (first person gets name and sex, second person primary stats, etc.)

Also, fuck the temple. One of the more tedious forced tutorials in a game, especially since the game is designed to be replayed multiple times.

She feels as though she has gained an arbitrary amount of experience such that she suddenly gains in power! She has a grand total of 4 skill points to dole out. Her small guns skill stands at a pretty embarassing 55 percent, while her unarmed skill is at 80 and her melee weapons skill is at 70.
To her left is the elder's tent. The elder looks funny and uses beg words. Beyond her tent is the tent of Hakunin, the medicine man. He also looks funny. To the right is the well you always fell into as a child. In front of you is the fighter's tent, where you might be able to learn how to use your spear better.

Since the opportunity for the devs to rack in cash from you buying it, I see no moral problem with torrenting it. there's one with quite a lot of seeds on isohunt. I know that there used to be a good torrent with 1+2+all the tactics around, if you can find it.

When I pay for a game, it's to reward the people who made it. I can see the appeal of GOG - cheap, no DRM, etc. But I don't feel that I owe them anything - they don't provide anything other than a fast and easy route to get the game, not further development work or additions to the game.

Isn't that entirely untrue? I thought the whole point of GOG was that they updated the games to run on newer operating systems and hence saved old games from abandon-ware and neglect, maybe I'm wrong but that sounds pretty sweet to me.

No, that is correct. They guarantee XP/Vista and soon to be 7 compatibility. Also it's legal.

No it's not. Fallout and Fallout 2 are excellent games that deserve support. In fact, you can get BOTH from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Fallout-Bundle-Jewel-Case-Pc/dp/B00004ZBSX) for less than $20. Buy the game, wait a week, and enjoy without being a douche.

Yeah GOG is a quality site.
You can also get any of the games off of Steam, the 3-pack of Fallouts 1/2 and Tactics is $20. But individually off of GOG I think they're cheaper.

GOG guarantees compatibility with XP / Vista (and they promise support for 7 as well) Otherwise there's a fan-made patch that fixes all the weird little glitches with Vista (there was a nasty tendency for the colors to go weird in the unpatched version) and generally shores up the game. In addition to that there's a "restoration pack" that adds a bunch of stuff that was cut from the final version of Fallout 2. I played it a long time back and it was certainly interesting to say the least. It wasn't a whole new experience, but there were some new locations and quests and the like. There's also a total conversion mod that completely changes the game, but I only played through Arroyo before it crashed due to incompatibility with the high-res mod. Speaking of which I think I'm going to add that to the game...
Mac versions of the first two games exist, but as far as I'm aware the physical copies are out of print. Unless there's a mac ISO game service I'm not aware of, torrents are your best bet for Macs.

Beyond Hakunin's tent lies the hunting grounds. ALLISON fondly recalls when she would accompany her family out to the grounds and smash the Squishy Lizzers with rocks. Oh bygone days.

Completely untrue! It's great for criticals, especially later in the game if you get sniper (which we're obviously not going to this time). If you max out luck, you get a critical every time you hit with the sniper perk.

Maxed out luck also makes for awesome random encounters.
But yeah, skill points to melee, and get out of this village already.
