Title: Antichrist is hitting US shores! finally!
Post by: scarred on 24 Sep 2009, 21:59
Trailer. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hw03QayJ2fU)

Any thoughts? I loved Europa, and personally I can't wait to see this. It seems divisive enough, at least... I mean, there's a testicle-crushing scene, and then there's the "cutting off her clitoris with a pair of rusty scissors" scene.

Thoughts?

No thanks.

Roger Ebert's series of articles on this has made me really interested.  Certainly seems as though it'll be unlike any other untraviolent movie that has come out recently.  The local theatre near my house is doing a Von Trier retrospective over the next couple weeks, so I'll probably see a few of his films before this reaches Montreal.

To tell the truth, this could be about anything and I'd be the first in the line, just because it's Lars von Trier. I'd list Dancer In The Dark, Breaking The Waves and Dogville among some of the best and most daring cinema of the past 25 years.

And lest us forget, Willem Dafoe! Show me a person who doesn't enjoy Mr. Jesus Christ himself, and I'll show you a...erm, jerk.

Roger Ebert, as usual, wrote some excellent things about it, which may point you towards what makes it different than something like Saw.

I tried watching it last night
I couldn't make it through. holy shit.
I didn't even get to the using "the rusty scissor scene" mainly because my imagination was running wild and probably made it worse than it ever could of been.

Next time I try will be during the day and preferably with at least 1 other person so that I cannot pansy out.
But Jesus christ.

EDIT:
I finished it.
The testicular crushing scene wasn't explicit. Just see her swinging a log at his nads. REALLY HARD. He is actually cut out of the picture for this. It's just her really.
however the cutting the clitoris scene was pretty much as if it was happening RIGHT IN YOUR FACE. But it wasn't drawn out. which is good. It shows her cutting - a spurt of blood and then it shows her rolling around on the ground. The atmosphere was actually the worst part of this film, made it all worse than it was.

Although it might not be a movie to make viewers comfortable, I recommend it. It makes us uncomfortable, it shows what humanity is capable of, something which Western Society tries to avoid. It succeeds in what it sets out to do, REALLY WELL. It is powerful Also the cinematography is great, and the symbolism is friggin massive. I will be watching it again to try to figure it all out.

But what a mind fuck. I basically had a constant wince on for the final third of the movie.

Sorry to dig up an old topic but i just watched this on Netflix. Not sure really what to think of the movie. I can understand why the person above me couldn't make it all the way through on the 1st go around as there are many and I mean many disturbing parts(self circumcision being the least). It is an art film in the highest sense. So much symbolism was packed into that movie it made it very hard to follow. I read the article by Roger Ebert above me and it helped explain a lot of what the movie was about. It also made me think of the actors roles in it differently. Guess was a good movie that made you think but can't say they were very pleasant thoughts.

this is a super scary movie, existentially terrifying. that's remarkable. every scene is fraught with fear, and nothing particularly typical of a horror film even happens until about two thirds of the way in.

I actually thought it was a bit funny. It's hard not to laugh at the contrast between Spoilera baby crawling and a closeup of genitals screwing. End Spoilers The bit with the raven and "You Bastard I'm a hammy actor with terrible dialouge you bastard!" doesn't help. The masturbation bit was gross though.

I agree with Johnny about it being scary in a way I haven't been scared in a long time. There were scenes that built up so much dread that i just wanted to turn it off for fear of what they might actually show or see.
