Title: Spam
Post by: smack that isaiah on 27 Sep 2009, 20:35
Hi, I was just wondering, how do these forums stay so free of spam?  I'm a member of a few other forums, two of which have recently been hit pretty damn hard by spammers.

I see this forum consistently lacks spam, and was just wondering why, especially since it's an open forum (the only forum other than this one without spam i'm a member of is to an invite-only site, so obviously spam is kept out).  Do you have a better captcha system?  Do your moderators do a better job keeping out the spam somehow?  Have I just not noticed the spam?
I'd just like to know so I can give some suggestions to the other forums since the amount of spam is seriously killing the community on them right now.

(sorry if this topic is actually pretty pointless/in the wrong subforum, I just wanted to ask this question and couldn't find a great place for it)

Also, sometimes this (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,23732.0.html) happens.

Because very few spammers have enough Indie Cred to post in these forums.

Sounds to me like someone is sizing our forum up for a spam attack.

It's weird, because I know we get so little spam, but of the other two boards I post on, I'm fairly certain I've seen no spam at all.

We all already have positively enormous penises.

EDIT: Especially the women.

There was a pretty funny porn spam post in the general discussion board the other day. Some of the taglines were hilarious.

I think maybe we hardly get any spam in here due to the CAPTCHA system, the registration/activation email thing and also because whenever we do people report it and I move it to the trash bin & ban the spambot.  I think that most of the other mods move/delete the spam too.  We do get spam, we just get rid of it asap.

huh, I guess I didn't notice any of those spams you all linked to (I didn't exactly know what to search, I just thought it'd be something with an awkward title and zero replies.  You all threw off my algorithm by replying to the spam bots (also Jeph's spam thread was funny))

So I'll probably chalk it up to the captcha and very active moderators quickly remedying the problems.

So, instead of asking why this forum has no spam, howsabout now I'm asking if anyone knows some secure good ways to stop spambots?  because the community is seriously lacking now (almost all the new posts yesterday were from spambots, and no one seems to feel like posting on days like that)

As long as none of the mods are like Aquaman, we are safe.

Damnit.  I was going to say this exact thing, but by the time I hit reply you'd already said it.
