Alright, this might as well get its own thread so we keep things nice and neat. It's that time of year again, folks! Time to decide when The Internet will get together for shenanigans of all sorts, this time in The Big Apple itself, New York City!
As per prior years, general guidelines are basically to avoid when people are in school, so we can effectively block out any time before mid June and any time after mid August. As suggested in the NYC vs. SF thread, it would be great if anyone that is planning on going could let us know of any conflicts you have next summer, such as previously planned vacations, weddings, drug deals, etc. The sooner we choose dates, the sooner people can watch for the best prices on plane tickets! It is a good thing!
Aaaaaaaaaand... GO!
-
I am free in about five years. Also, shortly after New Year's? I might actually spend New Year's in NYC again this year. It was such a memorable time last year (actually, it wasn't memorable, but some things that would have been memorable had I been mem...or...ic? happened) that I'm considering going again for this year. Aside from that, there's a time in March, but I might go down to Charleston again this year (also did that last year...am I really boring?).
-
I might complain about you guys planning to visit NYC after I've moved away, but since the meetup this year was in the city I live in now I really have nothing to complain about.
I guess what I'm saying is I want to complain, give me something to complain about.
-
I'd like same time as Chicagocon, which was early August.
-
early August would be awesome. I'm praying for a job there by that time.
-
I would be up for something of that sort, Jens. It depends upon a lot of factors, though.
I guess what I'm saying is I want to complain, give me something to complain about.
Your social security check is lost in the mail.
Things you were into in high school are now used ironically.
Kids may or may not be on your lawn.
-
Early August would be close to the worst possible time for me. I think I will be more of a normal human being with this "free time" next year, so you kids have fun this year without me. Be warned, though. I will want to have fun next year, so this year better not be too awesome to ever repeat.
-
I would like to aim for sometime in July. Personally, I'd have enough time to save up if I do go to Boston for PAX and I also probably would not be moving in July. I will have better opinions on this in a few months if/when I get accepted to a grad school that is nice enough to take me.

They want their ball back and you don't want to give it to them.
-
Damnit Jon that was exactly what I was going to say.
Please please please no earlier than start of July. I really need at least that long to save my moneys.
I'd also need to be in Alberta for the start of snow season (so, like November I guess?)
-
Oh yeah, and also guys, I would love to do a repeat of Camp Eed of sorts, if anyone wants to hang out for more than a couple of days. I'd love to go down to DC!
Well, I'm definitely up for D.C. hangouts before or after NYCon, considering I live in Baltimore and so we can start here before we head up to New York (carpool or bus, whatever we work out since there's a big apple special ticket price from B-more that's like 20 bucks round trip). We can do the museums, touristy stuff, zoos, all hell yeah. Also if there's a group of forumites comin' down here I bet it might even cause some of the other Marylanders to stir about and maybe hangout.
I'm going to throw my in towards a date closer to late July, though truth be told I don't have any other plans made yet for next summer, but I know I'll probably be taking summer courses at least in the June segment.

I somehow totally skimmed past this!
Anyway, in like Flynn.
-
I might actually be able to do this. Awesome!
-
A Camp Eed type thing would be awesome in D.C. Do we have any forumites that actually live in the city that would lend us hells of floorspace like Eed did?
Also it seems like the trend is pushing for late July/early August. Anyone opposed to this (other than Mr. Bassist, sorry dude!)?
-
Nah, I'm good for Augustus.
-
august is great as long as it is not the end of august, although that is just a preference and not an impossibility (i will probably be using that week to pack assuming i get into school somewhere).
let's wait for some more responses and once we get a few more opinions all up in here, we can probably start a poll with a few choice weekends and have a vote from there.
-
I can't go if Tania's going. We're mortal enemies.
(actually, I'm wicked in for this one)
-
come on shane, i'll even wait until no one's looking to kick your ass so that no one sees you getting beat up by a girl

Amusingly, my parents live right outside DC (less than 10 minutes from a metro station).
-
Would they let a small bunch of internet people sleep on their floor/couch for a few nights?
-
If I were there, probably, which means that way early August/earlier is necessary. I don't think they would be that okay if I was not there. I have teh leverage now!
I also have the worst test I've ever taken pt. 2 in late August, and I don't want to fail it again.
-
liz if you guys bribed me with hell of cookies or something i would consider it.
though it would be kind of awkward "hi mom and dad uh so people from the internet are gonna be hanging hard in the basement thats cool, no?
-
Things you were into in high school are now used ironically.
This one is actually true!
-

Man, you still owe me two boxes of Zebra Cakes. No WAY are you getting cookies with a debt that's been standing for this long.
-
I'm going to put up a vote for July.
August is oppressively hot up here in the Northeast and July is a smidgen more tolerable. Also, my lease runs up September 1, so August would be a terrible time for me to be spending money, just in case I end up moving.
-
July would be fantastic! I could come. I have people in both DC and NYC I could stay with, who correspond with people I would want to be seeing anyways. Plus, I wouldn't have the worst test I've ever taken pt. 2 taking up all of my time.
-
liz if you show up in dc i will get you like, 3 boxes.
however if i just see you in NY it will only be two.
-
Yeah, whenever.
-
Alright, it seems like we're leaning towards July to early August,
I'll add a poll to the thread I will do something. Apparently I cannot add a poll. pffffffffft.
-
though it would be kind of awkward "hi mom and dad uh so people from the internet are gonna be hanging hard in the basement thats cool, no?
I have already done this, and it was cool.
I would love to see the internet in New York next summer; I'm actually not sure where I'm going to be living or working at that point, but if it ends up being at like, late July early August as people seem to be saying, I could probably do that.
-
Alright, poll is now up. Vote away! If any of the dates would work for you, choose that option. If you really, really, really want another date, choose the last option and let us know. Have fun!
-
I have already done this, and it was cool.
Not so much with my parents, I suspect. I voted!
-
August is more doable than July. Not a complete deal breaker, but the later the better.
-
Dangit people it is kind of not helping at all if everybody votes for "yeah whenever"
-
Those of us in Canadadadada have a public holiday on August 2, probably making it easier to get days off work if we are going.
-
whoa yeah that is true i forgot all about that, good foresight.
okay technically i can still do this whenever but dovey is right, it doesn't help to have everyone vote that way so i am changing my vote for now to that weekend because i already know that even though i'll be able to get time off regardless my bosses are going to be dicks about it and this will maybe help them to be slightly smaller dicks than average
actually is there even any way to change my vote i don't see a thing anywhere
-
Yeah I voted for "whenever", but I would actually kind of prefer before Aug 6-9 because my classes start on the 12th.
-
I swear I made it an option to be able to change your vote, since I knew people would change their minds. Maybe if I remove the "whenever" option, then anyone that chose that will have to pick a weekend?
-
Probably a good idea. Choose a preferred week and then indicate in a post if that date is flexible for you.
-
I voted for July 16-19, but I'd be able to do the week before. The week after is a bit of a stretch. I might have to sit this year out.
-
Alright, the poll has been edited. Anyone that voted for "all of the above" must now make up their minds and choose a weekend. Go now!
-
Later in August work better for me, if I'm able to come at all. I'm really not sure what I'll be doing this summer, but if I do decide to return to Montreal early, New York is a fairly shot ride away. But I really won't know what I'll be doing for certain for at least another few months.
-
Honestly, looking over a lot of responses and seeing "if I can even come" and "a possibility" I'm wondering if now's really the right time to narrow this down.
Like many others, I'm not even 60% sure I'll even be able to make it, regardless of dates. We could really be limiting turnout by making this decision so far in advance. I think deciding a tentative timeframe of one month (Which we already have) would probably serve us better than locking us into a date and having a bunch of stuff suddenly come up for people. I think it's best we wait until peoples' calenders start to flesh themselves out a bit more in terms of givens like (I start school toward the end of August). It's really going to suck if one weekend is picked over another and then half the people who said that was their preferred date have to bow out because they either can't afford it or have something important more important come up.
I think we should flesh out a target period of mid-July to mid-August and call it a day until after New Year's, when peoples' money situations and familial/work commitments start to become clearer. I mean, shit, we're talking dates and we don't even have a real tentative list of who even wants to go. No offense to you guys, but if say someone close to me got engaged, I'd sure as Hell be blowing this off for that and I have to believe that a lot of people feel that way. I'm cool with narrowing it down a little bit for the sake of all the students here, but let's consider the working folks too, commitments crop up and it's exceedingly rare that said commitments pop up damn near a year in advance.
I particularly think it's better to get a list of "I will go hell or high water" "I will go, date dependent" and "I definitely cannot go" folks so we can better judge whether a person's availability is really worth considering. As it stands, I've yet to see anyone who is legitimately committed to this that's given an answer much more specific than "Whenever's cool with me, guys."
-
I've committed, date-dependent. Any time in August is out and late July is pushing feasibility for me. I'm kind of resigned to not doing anything social this summer, so my attendance is minor. I'd probably talk about optics and be stressed the entire time anyways.
-
June I will be in Oz fuck all y'all
-
Yeah, it's October. I don't know what I'm going to be doing exactly next summer yet. So pretty much what Jon said.
-

Ahem.
-
Ummm you live in NYC. We want a house to crash at while in D.C. Do you have one of those too?
-
Oh, I assumed y'all needed crash space in New York.
-
I could certainly use some.
-
Space is limited but I could definitely put up two people, or three people if two were willing to share a pull-out couch. Talk to me about it closer to the fact.
-
Depends on whether your fucking A/C works.
That is the only thing about that hotel that was awful.
-
For you maybe. In the future you gotta bunk with Emilio, who it turns out is cold as ice.
