Title: Goth or Not Goth? Ask Me.
Post by: KharBevNor on 20 Nov 2009, 07:02
When I was a teenager, I spent a lot of time honing my sense of what is Goth and what is Not Goth (pathosception). I had plenty of time to spend thinking on this subject whilst I was dying my hair, painting my nails, doing my makeup and photoshopping pictures of myself for my Vampirefreaks profile.

Pictures like this.

Nowadays I have pretty much retired from the whole goth game and gone to stud, as it were. I sometimes wear clothes that are dark grey or blue, and my black leather trenchcoats have seen better days. But I still have my old faculties pretty much all in order, so I thought I would share them with the forums as a sort of public service. It seems to me that these days there is a lot of confusion as to what is and is not Goth, and I want to help put that right. Basically, all you gotta do is say a thing, or post a picture, and I will tell you whether it is

or

I will also try and explain why.

Ask quick before I drink too much.

@ Emilio:

This was a hard one. There are many goth elements here; the spells, mansions etc. Unfortunately, the music is just too funky to make the cut. Also, he doesn't want to be hurt. This is not goth at all: he should be craving suffering like a fat girl craves cakes. If you put it on straight 4/4 beat and had some malnourished warlock from leads playing icy guitar it would be totes goth, but I'm going to have to go with

Based on how much I want to bone Dita Von Teese there is no way she can't be goth.

I could actually argue that Brian Warner is pretty goth. For a start, he obviously really, really likes David Bowie, and he's boned Dita Von Teese. These are very powerful arguments. Unfortunately, the dude just tries too hard, and never gets it right. The problem is, he always just looks like a weekender: he's got a norm haircut, and he seems to just wear normal clothes that are black, which isn't goth. A real goth has got to look like, say, an insane fin de siecle french artist who murders prostitutes, or a frankenstein monster made from parts of former bassists from Christian Death who just ate a kilo of hairspray, or a black and white photo of Sigue Sigue Sputnik.

To a degree. She might just really like Lenore. You have to remember, that the cardinal rule of goth is that you should absolutely never ever self-identify as a goth, and if at all possible you should mock gothness. This is the thing that almost all teenage goths get wrong, even the ones who are mostly doing it right by wearing old army boots they buried in the back garden for two weeks instead of New Rocks and being able to have an intelligent discussion about which is the best XIII. Stoleti album*. If you call yourself a goth you essentially lost the goth game, unless you are really clever and take it to another level where you admit to being goth as a joke so you are not goth but are still goth all the same.

Pink satin sheets, Tim Burton toys, teddy bear, straight hair: total weekender. This barbie needs an undercut, a red velvet bedspread and a less dominatrixy lower half. It is a fact little understood by many that goth chicks do not have to dress like they have taken a pair of scissors to a 'SEXY WITCH' halloween costume. Indeed, they very rarely do, which is pretty good because goth chicks are just average ladies generally and most average ladies can't dress like novelty strippers and get away with it.

This is an interesting one. The music of Placebo is certainly not goth, but it is goth friendly, much like the music of Kate Bush or the Eurythmics. Older goths would sciff at Placebo, of course, but most goths under the age of 25 have owned and liked at least one Placebo album at some point in thier lives.

As for the individuals, well, we've got some powerful plus points. Make up and ambiguous sexuality for instance; this is certainly more true of the earlier phases of Placebo. Given that no one in their might minds would try and argue that Robert Smith isn't goth* it could be hard for the layman to see why we can't come out and call Placebo goth. However, we have to look at the overall picture here. Problem is, Placebo are an NME band. No way round that, and the NME have never got goth. When Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division and The Damned started hacking out the basic foundations of goth from the soft clay of post-punk back in the early eighties the NME tried to 'discover' the goth rock genre, and tried to call it 'positive punk', which really goes to show how fucking stupid they are. This association, at the end of the day, makes calling Placebo goth worryingly like calling Muse prog rock.

*Except Robert Smith, for obvious reasons.

The death sound is the main goth in this whole area. But unfortunately, that area is in California. California had some goth chops back in the glory days of Death Rock, but since the nineties when you say California and Goth Rock together the sounds get all mangled and you actually say

Cleopatra Records

Ah yes, Cleopatra. The record label responsible for producing industrial rock tribute albums to Smashing Pumpkins and AC/DC. No real goth can admit to liking Cleopatra records since at least 1995, even if you own almost every album that has ever come out on the label (I know I do). This immediately makes the death sound suspect. it is no good being top goth if that is associated with Razed in Black's cover of Cherub Rock.

The other thing, is the death sound is certainly southern gothic, but that is really only tangential to goth. And the self-mutilation stunt is more GG Allin than Andrew Eldritch.

hmmn.

This is a matter for serious scientific research. Goth/not goth duality is only poorly understood.

k

Yeah, Depeche Mode are goth. Well, rather, the band themselves are not goth, but listening to them can be, if it is in the right context. It's a combination of the generally gloomy attitude, the good slow-dancing beats and the french name.

Yeah, I've always kind of argued that they're not really a goth band in terms of music style, but that doesn't really make Peter Steele less goth. It just gives him a firmer grip on his "I'm not goth" goth cred.

Also, Belly Dancers. I'm told that these two scenes overlap so much and that is why so many goth girls are also belly dancers. Can you explain this to me? I never understood how belly dancers could be goth.

Also, why isn't Gaiman goth? I mean he did have a book called the Graveyard Book, and its about a little boy who is raised in a graveyard and cared for by a vampire.

Sorry I have so many questions.

Also, I know a lot of goths that work with programming. Is this an ok goth career?

That is one of the main goth careers. Goths who work outside the goth industry (alternative clothing stores, magazines, record labels, goth pubs etc.) normally prefer white collar jobs with no customer interaction. This is so they can have purple hair and scaffolding and not get fired. Other goths have learned to stealth effectively. The least goth job I have known a proper goth to have was either insurance broker or selling mobile phones.

@Alex: I would say that early to mid Type O Neg is goth metal. Not gothic metal, but goth. I would compare them with Moonspell, Tiamat, early Theatre of Tragedy etc. They have those bela lugosi vocals and a real sisters of mercy guitar tone going on at times. Of course, a goth purist would say that metal can never be goth, but most of the people who think like that entered a state of life in death when Bauhaus first split up, and were permanently put to their eternal rest with Rozz Williams.

Yeah, the purity argument always left me wondering. Plus, I'm under 30, and I'm an American from the midwest, so I have deep misgivings about my ability to really discern goth from not goth, goofy Catholic upbringing and angsty teenage years aside.

The Melville/Poe thing is interesting. Now of course, obviously both gentlemen are pre-goth, since neither of them made it to the 1970's what with one thing or another. We must consider them on the influence. On this criteria, I'm afraid, despite the penchant for dark romanticism exhibited by both, only one can pass.

Edgar Allen Poe is more

than a casket full of bats. He is the only absolute requirement in the goth literary canon; everything else can be taken or left, but even cybergoths can probably quote Alone or The Raven[/url]. Asking a goth their favourite lyrical work by Poe is a good method of judging their level. Low level goth will probably go for The Raven or Lenore. Goths who have mastered the 35 Chambers of Christian Death Bootlegs will probably make one of three choices: Alone, The Conqueror Worm or Dreamland. Dreamland in particular indicates a very potent goth, or perhaps a big fan of Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows*. Alone is becoming a bit less exclusive these days because of the internet and many musical versions.

Melville on the other hand is

He just ain't part of the canon. No one reads Moby Dick because they're a goth.

*these are normally the same as it takes quite a loit of gothitude to deal seriously with a heavily pierced bald transexual wearing sixty metres of torn black veils who made a neoclassical/darkwave concept album about how painful it is to be a vampire and gives musician credits to the voices in their head.

Tripp Eisen is an Ayn Rand fan who used to be in Static X. Murderdolls is pretty much the best thing he has done with his life.

Also he did it after the band split up. Maybe the Murderdolls were responsible for reigning in his inner demon all thos years? We will never know. I do, however know that I come from the planet beyond the stars, looking for some human body parts. I知 gonna pull your body from your grave, cause I知 graverobbing U.S.A.

Eisen was in that band for all of about ten minutes. He barely played on the record and left before they did any touring. It's entirely possible he got kicked out for being a pedophile. Or a libertarian.

Also let's not forget that he was in Dope! Dope.

Quote
Eisen holds, and is vocal about, libertarian views. He is an avid fan of author Ayn Rand (Atlas Shrugged, The Fountainhead, Anthem), and promoted Rand's philosophy of Objectivism while in the public spotlight by wearing t-shirts such as "Who Is John Galt?", "Equality 7-2521", and "Brother, You Asked For It", and by talking to fans and the media about Rand. He was the only member of Static-X to regularly post on the band's internet forums.[citation needed]

In 2005 Eisen was arrested for the kidnapping and sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl. He plead guilty to charges of statutory rape and was sentenced to one year in jail.

Quote
Sexual assault charges

While a member of Static-X, Eisen was arrested on February 10, 2005 on a felony charge in Orange County, California for having sexual intercourse with an underage girl. He was released on bail after only a few hours in custody. Just two weeks later, on February 24, 2005, Eisen was arrested again in California by New Jersey detectives for the alleged kidnapping and sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl from Sayreville, New Jersey. New Jersey State Police alleged that Eisen posed as a Static-X fan on the Internet and lured the girl starting in October 2004 and culminating with sexual intercourse on January 7, 2005.[1]

Upon hearing of the arrests, Static-X fired Eisen and replaced him with the original guitarist Koichi Fukuda (whom Eisen had replaced after Fukuda left the band in 2001). When Wayne Static was asked about Eisen's firing he said: "I knew immediately that we were going to kick him out of the band. We had to do that."

On June 24, 2005, Eisen pled guilty to the California charges of statutory rape and was sentenced to a year in state prison. After spending late February to late September 2005 in California prison, Eisen was released and due for an October 7, 2005 arraignment in New Jersey on the February 24 charges.[2]

Eisen is back in jail as of December 10, 2008 following a parole violation. He is scheduled to be released on October 19, 2009.

Well I didn't know any of that....

I'm gonna go out on a limb in pre-empting a reply from the expert but:

It is a fact little understood by many that goth chicks do not have to dress like they have taken a pair of scissors to a 'SEXY WITCH' halloween costume. Indeed, they very rarely do, which is pretty good because goth chicks are just average ladies generally and most average ladies can't dress like novelty strippers and get away with it.

If you look at the Miller-Meteor on that page, the ambulance has a higher top, and the one in the 2008 and 1960s picture you could stand in as long as you bent over a bit and weren't really tall.

wait, what does the paint job have anything to do with it? hearses don't necessarily have to be black. my friend owns one that is baby blue; they take it to hearse conventions. they have a black one too but the blue one is way prettier. It's the lights that switch, when it is a hearse it can have yellow flashing lights, when it's an ambulance it has yellow and blue flashing lights.

From what I understand, it's mostly a roadtrip of hearses. Like a hoard of hearses. The people who own multiple nice hearses probably have a lot in common with each other... and I don't know, what do people talk about at comic conventions? That'd be soo boring, like they sit around and talk about comics all day??
Title: Re: Goth or Not Goth? Ask Me.
Post by: Bastardous Bassist on 09 Dec 2009, 20:31
That does sound quite boring.  I also don't understand comic conventions.  The two types of conventions I can understand are science conventions (people give talks about things that they've discovered, people demo new products, and it's a great networking opportunity) and gaming conventions (because people actually game).  Though, I guess road trip conventions are ones I understand, too, because they're actually using their whatever the convention is about (motorcycle, classic car, hearse, etc).  Road trip conventions sound much more interesting than comic conventions.

I suppose, but you would want it white and red for the ambulance around here so people realized you were an ambulance and not just some loony driving down the road at 80MPH with stick-on lights flashing. I suppose a lot of people do pull over before they even see you (the noise), so it might not be as bad as I would think.

it also seems like you shouldn't have the same color paintjob for ambulance duty and hearse duty, just like you aren't going to wear scrubs to a funeral. Maybe that's a more recent luxury.

Bassist, I think your first example explained perfectly that it is subjective, and people will find conventions absolutely fascinating that others can't see the point of. The science convention sounds boring, at least until they involve robotic replacement bodies, laser eyes, or functional wings for humans. Then I'll be interested.

I think it's important to realise here that most of the people who own hearses for non-commercial purposes are in Psychobilly bands and are married to Morticia Addams look-alikes. They mainly talk about upright basses, pomade and old B-Movies.

This is pretty much a typical hearse owner:

His hearse has a functioning flamethrower on the roof. He built it to attract the attention of this woman:

The point of a hearse is that it is a vehicle used to carry dead people. This is not a complicated reason.
Title: Re: Goth or Not Goth? Ask Me.
Post by: Bastardous Bassist on 10 Dec 2009, 08:48
I was under the impression that the people at hearse conventions do not tend to use their hearses to carry dead people.  They tend to use them to, as Khar said, "to attract the attention of [that] woman."
Title: Re: Goth or Not Goth? Ask Me.
Post by: jhocking on 10 Dec 2009, 09:09
Parse my language carefully. I didn't say that the point is to carry dead people, I said that the point is it's used to carry dead people. Subtle distinction.

You suggested that the point is they are impractical, but really that's just a side-effect of their true appeal, that they are used to carry dead people.
Title: Re: Goth or Not Goth? Ask Me.
Post by: Bastardous Bassist on 10 Dec 2009, 09:18
I see.  Still, I have trouble believing that this is practical in any way, shape or form.

I think that the fact that it was made to carry dead people is no longer completely the point of this construction.

Also, maybe it should be noted that I have accepted the appeal of hearse conventions, since it's not just people sitting around talking about hearses.  They get together and drive their hearses, and that I can understand though I don't share their interest in hearses.  Nothing where people just sit around discussing trivia about their hobby is the least bit interesting.

p.s.  I am expanding "science conventions" to really include all trade conventions because they're a way for people to conduct their business more efficiently.  I'm always a fan of being more valuable as an employee.  Also, trade conventions almost always happen in awesome locations to entice people to come, so there's that.

Weirdly, Surf Nazis Must Die! is not even in the top 5 most perplexing 'high concept' Troma releases. It is one of their most dissapointing however, as nothing could ever really match up to the title and poster art. I personally prefer Chopper Chicks in Zombie Town (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1sRLVQ_kk0) as the highlight of that era.

Classifying the whole psychobilly thing (which horror surf is an offshoot of) is tricky. Though psychobilly was invented in the UK (by The Meteors (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-x3lpeS0r8), and there are some top notch European acts (ranging from the traditionalists like Batmobile (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyLPwt0xRMg&feature=related) to a personal favourite of mine, swedish 'vampire country' act The Coffinshakers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48iEGWxXEvU&feature=related)), by nature of its origins it's become a pretty American thing. It's picked up some deathrock associations over the years as well, the other great American goth style. When it was originally thought up by the Meteors they were marrying rockabilly with the horrorpunk aesthetic of The Misfits with rockabilly and Oi! style punk to create an apolitical form of punk music in opposition to the extreme, polar politicisation of the UK punk and skin scene at the time. It's not goth in the traditional sense, but goth is a chameleonic beast, and it has certainly grown closer to the goth crowd over the years, though there are still very punk and very rockabilly segments within the scene. I would say

Tim Burton is a curious case. I personally would call him an appropriator. He poaches goth aesthetics and repackages them for mainstream consumption. His relation to goth is kinda like the relationship of Good Charlotte to punk music. Okay, that's a little harsh: he's in that category of a dude who does things a lot of goths think are pretty neat sometimes (much like Johnny Depp really) but you couldn't really call him goth on anything past maybe Vincent (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxQcBKUPm8o). (Possibly Beetlejuice at the outside but I would fight you. Perkygoths are totally gay for the kiddies cartoon version though).

Also there's just the general problem of trying to get goths to accept showtunes. Not enough sparse, arctic TR-808 drumlines or piercing dub pedalled guitar or romanian accents going on*.

*Most goths know all the words to 'Phantom of the Opera' though. Just get one drunk and try it.

I think what really confuses people is when members of each group pair off. In my early twenties I was friends with a guy who was definitely a rivethead and he was dating a lady that was definitely goth. In fact, I've ran into a few couples like that and only once was it the woman who was into rivet instead of vice versa; I tend to wonder if the fascination with militaristic images and power fantasy makes rivet into more of a young man's game. Like I said though, I only knew one of the couples pretty well, and from what I could tell, they basically got together because she was one of the few girls in town who didn't really care how much PVC he wore.

I don't think goth is really right for fortran. It's cold and mechanical and efficient. I think you're after something darker, more mystical and slightly unnecessary. Like Haskell which is pretty much black magic.

Dear Dark Lord Khar,

I have a question that is not so much is something goth or not goth, but to do with goth plans. You see, the monthly fetish night is tonight(the only fetish event in all of town for the month, which will include public floggings, fire dancers, belly dancers, dominatrixs, etc etc). We'd really like to go, but I am just getting over the flu. Should I attend such gothy events?

Tommy, you're forgetting the war of 1219 when Sheffield was stolen from Lancashire by the Yorkshire upstarts. Previously they had been confined to a small section of the east coast but in a sudden uprising a mass of armed horsemen with long, shaggy beards, thick Yorkshire accents and muddy boots stormed the areas to the west, south and north and claimed it as their own. That's why the east of Yorkshire is called the East Riding of Yorkshire when everywhere else is just "West" or "North" or "South"; it's a memorial to the brief but bloody period of history which formed the basis of the hatred between counties.

Or something.
