Title: The Least Offensive Music in the World
Post by: pilsner on 10 Dec 2009, 14:01
Simple challenge:  find a song that every regular on the forum likes listening to.  Not loves necessarily, mind you, likes.  That means everyone gets veto over every song.  I think a lot of people just stay out of threads that don't interest them rather than contributing the always unhelpful: "Well I think that sounds like shit, what the fuck is wrong with you," so I'm curious if there is any point of convergence in the bizarre ven diagram that is our communal musical tastes.

Also: you don't need to explain why you don't like a song, if you don't like just say so.  But hey, go ahead and explain if you want to get it off your chest.  There is no bad reason for disliking a song, bad association or overlistening are OK.

Also, also:  Bonus points if the song isn't by one of the following bands:  The Beatles, Joy Division, the Pixies, and Radiohead.

Maybe some Bowie song of Spiders from Mars?
Haven't met anyone who didn't like that album

According to a professor of mine, the following song is the single best example of poetry in the English language based on the criteria we was going to spend the next nine weeks teaching the class.   It is understandable,  cathartic, has common emotional ties everybody can relate to, and a whole host of other shit that I didn't really pay attention to.

I don't think I've met anyone who disliked Johnny Cash.

Also, I bet something like Miles Davis or Beethoven would do well in this kind of thing - just because people are often afraid to express their dislike of jazz or classical out of fear they'll appear uncultured.

And I specifically said that because I knew someone was going to suggest 4'33''.

I don't think I've met anyone who disliked Johnny Cash.

Let me change that for you. Vetoed.

Both Beatles songs are fine. I don't love them, but I find them eminently listenable.

I'll second the veto on that John Denver song.

I can tolerate Hockey Monkey.

So despite the fact that I really did have a professor who called Sunshine On My Shoulders the best piece of poetry, blah blah blah, I was joking.

We also all know this a fool's errand right?  Someone will veto everything just to be contrary.  Anyway, I can't believe we got more than 3 replies without this:

That's an incredible song but will it appease the metalheads?
If we're speaking about the beatles track, I have no problem with it. The Beatles were the first band I ever was a fan of, though, so I probably don't speak for everybody. Khar, for example, will probably veto everything in here and post Anal Cunt.

Dethklok pisses me off just because there is an entire community of metalheads my age now who take them seriously.

As in, they buy Dethklok merch and listen to Dethklok albums.

They're a joke, and a joke that makes irritating music at that.

Avec, that is one of my least favorite Belle & Sebastian songs but please never feel the need to apologize for that video.

Once you get over the vicious stigma (and believe me this took me some time), they are rather enjoyable.

I guarantee you that at the very least, the half of this forum that wants to suck off John Darnielle will agree.

Maybe even the 25% that would rather blow Andrew Bird.

While I don't totally loathe Vampire Weekend, there are virtually no circumstances under which I would choose to listen to them, or that song. And it's not even a song that say, I would enjoy if a friend happened to play it, I would be totally ambivalent. Or mildly annoyed. But not terribly annoyed.

But Tommy's already vetoed, so the point is moot.

Skronky is a word I tend to use more by feel than by virtue of actually being able to define it, but being prompted this the best I can come up with. A sound that is skronky is a mid-to-high pitched and mildly dissonant, but not so dissonant as to be truly off-putting.

As for Opeth and Vampire Weekend - come on, guys. Let's at least try not to make this into a thread where we wave our music taste like flags/penises. It's really really obvious that someone is gonna veto both those suggestions, isn't it?

Vampire Weekend isn't a personal taste of mine, they're just a really inoffensive band! They're poppy and safe. Which brings me to my next point:

As long as their singer still draws breath, I will not even acknowledge his bandmates as human beings, let alone as musicians.

Jeez dude, that's fucking harsh. I can understand a dislike of them but what about their music is so awful that you would go to such lengths to insult them?

Billie Holiday is gonna get vetoed on account of not everyone likes blues and jazz. Though personally I find her wonderful.

Do the members of Dinosaur Jr. actually have mad skateboarding/BMX skills or are those well-placed stunt doubles?

Aww man. I guess "Mind Your Own Business" lasted longer than I expected. Also, has anyone technically vetoed "Fight the Power"? I know Khar sort of blanket vetoed but for Public Enemy I insist he confirm else it don't count.

edit: I'm not gonna lie, the_pied_piper, but kneejerk reaction to your veto of "Lust for Life" was something to the effect of

FUCK YOU

But you should know it's not personal. It actually kind of surprised me how much fury was in that second it took me to read it before my brain kicked in.

Here is "Every Day I have the Blues" by Count Basie with Joe Williams:

I feel like if we're actually serious about getting a result out of this thread then maybe we need to be more methodical about it. So far everyone's posting songs they like and assuming everyone else is going to like them, but frankly we're never going to get anywhere doing that because there are just too many songs. So maybe everyone who's participating in this thread should give some idea as to what they like in a piece of music, so that we know what to look for?

Here's me: I like a very large range of music, but I really don't like anything much by way of metal, post-Sabbath. I like something where I can clearly hear all the different instruments, and the interplay between them. I'm not overly keen on most dancefloor-oriented electronic music because I find the repetitiveness of it boring and pointless. If something has Real Instruments actually being played by people it's going to increase my likelihood of enjoying it exponentially. I don't care if a piece of music doesn't have a vocal component. I like fast music and slow music pretty much equally. If the piece of music does have vocals, the lyrics have to be at least as good or as interesting as the music. As has been pointed out to me elsewhere, I tend to prefer music that was made by black people who are now dead.

Speaking of which: here's "Zombie" by Fela Kuti. You probably won't listen to it because it's an edited version and it still goes for ten minutes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBgewcFh-cg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBgewcFh-cg)

At the very least, if we're going to get anywhere  think we're gonna have to slow down.  Or maybe not, I dunno. I've either listened to or already known whether or not I like every song posted so far...I guess I'm just saying that I would be really surprised if no one vetoed any of the songs in this latest flurry of suggestions, but we're posting songs too quickly for people to hate on them and comment on why.

Bring it On Home to Me by Sam Cooke (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAQE-tHjPAc)

I like the way you think! I considered posting the version of "Chain Gang" from the same album (One Night Stand: Live at the Harlem Square Club, 1963, for anyone who doesn't know. Get it.). The problem is that what might reasonably be thought of as the "official" versions, that is the studio recordings, of Sam Cooke's songs are much more polished, pop-oriented affairs which will appeal to a much smaller number of people, I think. Which raises a question: do we consider all versions of a particular song by a given artist? Or are we explicitly saying "this version and this version only"?

Adjusted; the contents of the list is actually pretty surprising (some of the things on there I didn't even bother nominating because I figured it would get vetoed immediately). I guess the most popular songs on the forum are also the ones that inspire the most hate (and hence get struck down quickly), whereas the lesser discussed ones are generally met by indifference by the rest of the forum?

The Tower of Power horns have done a lot of session work as a group.  Still, most of the Blues Brothers' musicians came from the SNL band, so it's unlikely that there was much crossover.

Both of these things, and the guy's voice is pretty grating.

So, you dislike well-executed music?  The guy's voice is unfortunately grating.  It's the best version I could find online (the album version is brilliant, plus there's a live version they put out with a best of collection that is good).

That was, in fact, the impression I was under.  Hell, I haven't vetoed some songs that I've had strong opinions on sections of, because I didn't dislike the song as a whole.  If we're not doing it that way, then I need to know.

Also, I found this:

Duke Ellington - C Jam Blues (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOlpcJhNyDI). Short, not repetitive but not overly complex (12-bar blues IIRC, but with almost constant improvisation from someone), no screwy use of instruments, seems like even if people don't love it, few people won't dislike it.

Why am I nominating something that is an old school classic by a black guy? Because if I posted Schoenberg, Webern, or Berg in here I'm pretty sure you uncultured jerks would veto it immediately. Learn to love the atonality.

Tongue was in cheek there. Schoenberg and his students made some very inaccessible music, I don't know anyone else that likes them, although I haven't really spoken to many people about expressionist music.

NEW LIST YOU COCKS

Hendrix - Little Wing
Bowie -  Starman, Space Oddity, Rock n Roll Suicide
Sex Bomb by Flipper
Crippled Black Phoenix - Burnt Reynolds

Veto. I feel like there must be some Bowie I'll like somewhere in his catalogue but none of those are working for me, and Flipper get a veto for being far more boring than they should be.

I'm going to have to be a dick and veto that Duke Ellington song just because I've always found it pretty unexciting compared to most of his other famous compositions of the same period. As a compensation I'll offer "Ko-Ko" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clJb8mC4WzA) and "Cottontail (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqmgVOc-K1Q)". Oh so there's enough stuff been vetoed that it's actually worth suggesting things again

Agalloch- Limbs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIzoyPfPKO4) (I figure it's got appeal to metalheads and people who like shoegaze plus the opening feedbacky-part and then the first chord progression are basically unimpeachable)

Bruce Springsteen- Thunder Road beautiful amazing live version with just piano & vox (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIzoyPfPKO4) + album version with full band (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsJsjaYm03E&feature=related)  (I know there are certain people who will veto Springsteen immediately on principle but hey fuck you guys)

The Gaslight Anthem- Great Expectations (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2Leo9HSaGQ&feature=player_embedded)

It's not my favourite Agalloch song. I explained why I chose it, because I thought it would have good cross-genre appeal.

Title: Re: The Least Offensive Music in the World
Post by: De_El on 13 Dec 2009, 14:35
The title of the thread is a misnomer. The precedent established by previous pages of this thread isn't that a song you don't veto fails to offend you, but rather that you actually like it. "Like" however, is also being used as a somewhat loose term, a minimum of positive feeling and appreciation for a song being sufficient to prevent vetoing.

Also, a song you find boring can be offensive in the sense that it bores you when you'd rather not be bored, and you're meant to be listening to the song, rather than playing the song while doing something else entirely and not retaining any meaningful memory of what the song was like. In this case, you may find at the end of the song it was a waste of your time, or you'd rather have stopped it part way through instead of bothering with the whole thing.

The first contribution I can think to make on this (totally confounding) thread is Dave Brubeck - Take Five (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwNrmYRiX_o) because it's probably one of the most easily groove-to-able songs I've ever heard and can be played at literally any gathering of people and be at least tolerated until the drum solo.  It seems like "classic" is slang on this forum for "not actually cool in any way" but come on, guys.

(I admit that I'm actually just kinda confused by RallyMonkey vetoing Stevie Wonder and Funkadelic, and Jimmy vetoing Clutch, Otis Redding, and Fela Kuti.)

OK, here are some more options that I think are reasonable:
The Budos Band - TIBWF (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tsau-muGcSc)
DJ Frane - I Am Dreaming (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVP9K-GLa6M)
The Flaming Lips - Do You Realize??? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zYOKFjpm9s)
Earth, Wind, and Fire - September (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iknEJf9cPeY)
Gary Higgins - It Didn't Take Too Long (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkCIB9Xkwgg)
Soulsavers - Revival (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErmJa3MBI10)
Masters of Reality - Doraldina's Prophecies (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B993WYNtbqk)
Pretty Lights - The Time Has Come (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWE1qhJuVts)

For fuck's sake veto songs one at a time, guys.  It implies that you have actually listened to them.  Explaining yourself is recommended.

I just want to remind everyone that "most universally appealing" is not actually synonymous with "best."  It just means "the most people will be OK with it if their friend puts this on when they're hanging out."  What I'm getting out of this thread is that a few of you would be absolute hell to hang out with because I'd never get to play any music without pissing you off.

I'm going to have to be a dick and veto that Duke Ellington song just because I've always found it pretty unexciting compared to most of his other famous compositions of the same period.
So you actually don't like it, or you think it's inferior to some of his other stuff? Because nobody is going to agree on the best, so I picked something that seemed like it would keep people's attention decently, but wouldn't annoy anyone, which by necessity usually ends up meaning it isn't the best, just okay.

For what it's worth, though, I like C jam blues better than either of the ones you linked. Not vetoing them, just saying.

I think you have a higher standard of like than I do. A lot of bands, I like their worst album, because it is still good, and I would still rather listen to it than a lot of other music.

That could be why I haven't vetoed anything yet, anything I dislike gets vetoed pretty much immediately.

That link needs fixing (for me, at least).

Also what the hell is up with vetoing something because it's boring.  I mean, doesn't that generally mean it's inoffensive?

As a musician, boring music pisses me off the most.  It means they haven't had any good ideas, nor have they managed to express anything or evoke any kind of reaction.  Why does that music exist?  Couldn't they have done something better with their time.  For that matter, like De_El said, couldn't I have done something better with mine?

Dave Brubeck - Take Five (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwNrmYRiX_o)

No.  No.  No.  Never.  I can't stand "Take Five."  I don't even like Paul Desmond's sax playing.  VETO.

The Budos Band - TIBWF (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tsau-muGcSc)
DJ Frane - I Am Dreaming (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVP9K-GLa6M)
Gary Higgins - It Didn't Take Too Long (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkCIB9Xkwgg)

YAAAAAAAAWN.  If any of these songs came on, I would fall asleep.  I almost did.  VETO.

Earth, Wind, and Fire - September (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iknEJf9cPeY)

If this makes it after someone vetoed the far superior Tower of Power, I will be annoyed.  However, I do enjoy the song to some degree so I'm not going to take it down.

Now, though I grouped some together, I listened to all of them.

Aphex Twin - Film (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOrrXDmb4CU)

The Bad Plus do a fantastic cover of this song on "These Are The Vistas."  Aside from the fact that cover exists, I'm perfectly okay with Aphex Twin's version.

I was actually going to suggest that way back on page 3 or 4 but I concluded that some phillistone would come along and veto it because they don't like his voice or because it's boring or because "it doesn't go anywhere" so I decided to save myself the distress.

Sometimes songs are pretty enough that they don't need to go anywhere.  All they need to do is be pretty.

Also, it does actually go somewhere.  It builds up, and then subsides.  It just doesn't have any harmonic changes.
Title: Re: The Least Offensive Music in the World

I wasn't saying it doesn't go anywhere. I was suggesting that someone else who couldn't be bothered listening to it properly might veto it because they think it doesn't go anywhere.

Basically I was saying that if this thread has taught me anything it's that a lot of people are kind of stupid and obnoxious when it comes to listening to music they haven't heard before.

Yeah, also, if someone's commenting ambiguously about a song, assume they're fine with it unless the make themselves fucking clear and actually say "veto."

Sorry. I just had a momentary flash of extreme frustration because it seemed like two people in a row had fundamentally misunderstood what I had thought were pretty clear sentiments on my part.

My mistake!

It is also in space. Literally.

For fuck's sake veto songs one at a time, guys.  It implies that you have actually listened to them.  Explaining yourself is recommended.

For fuck's sake nominate songs one at a time, guys

To the contrary, Search & Destroy was nominated early on and to my knowledge no one has vetoed it.  Iggy Pop rules man, it's time we should all come to terms with that fact.

Jesus people, are you not bothering to try to understand anything I'm actually saying? NOT a veto. NOT a veto. For goodness sake.

Sorry, I didn't mean you, I meant the the guy who said FYL. It was sort of pretty clear from your post that you like/love the song.

Anyhoos. FUCKING MINGUS.

My friend just put up an art show all about Mingus! I haven't seen it yet but the dude is crazy talented.

Also when did Wayne Coyne become the boy in the bubble? Is he contagious? Do we have to protect him from the outside world or protect the outside world from him and all his confetti cannons?

The bubble prevents his sense of extreme joy from making the world's erogenous zones explode.

Veto wagner, kraftwerk and iggy pop.

No need for those particular forms of excessive boredom.

Fair enough.  Yeah I think we're done here.  I initially conceived of the challenge as halfway between an empathy exercise and a sociological experiment.  It kinda worked.

Especially when all those erogenous zones are so exposed like that.

I think for our own good we should go back to the old ways of having a small elite dictating musical taste to the rest of the forum, in as smug and absolutist fashion as possible.

Everybody else should shut up and eat what they're given.
