I've seen footage that suggests she has, not that it makes that much of a difference to my life anyway.
I saw, in a gesture of impressive solidarity from many people, that on another forum I went on most of the people who crushed on her said they'd still go there.

Actually Lady Gaga is making an absurd amount of money being totally and completely insane. On the other hand, it rules because it gives us some completely ludicrous spectacles to marvel at. Like, it's kind of amazing how quickly her videos went from being nominally about music to being about how many times she can change costumes in four minutes, but it's good because her three-minute-long glitz bombs are usually way more interesting than the songs themselves.

I like Lady Gaga not only because her songs are really catchy and super fun (and I agree with Kieffer that Bad Romance is a fantastic video) (I've liked all her videos) but also because I tend to like anything that subverts hegemonic femininity. The rumors of her being a post op transsexual make me like her more. This is also part of the reason I like Dolly Parton so much as well.

You don't? Maybe not, but she's been pretty coy about it in interviews and she seems like the type to pull a stuntperformance art piece like that. Like anybody who writes a song about the paparazzi, she knows that all publicity is good publicity. Sure, having an imaginary penis won't help her sell records directly, but people will youtube the video so they can talk about the rumor, and in doing so be exposed to the music. It's like Ricky Martin's gayness all over again. Cept this time the rumor's aren't obviously true. And the music sucks.
Aside from the razor blade sunglasses, she's not really that great fashion-wise either.

Tommy, I think it goes back to what Scarred said, you do kinda get the feeling that she's pulling a prank on the music industry. She's only straight up said the video for Bad Romance is about, metaphorically, how the industry simulates human trafficking. More directly, I think it has partially to do with the fact that she dresses like a pointy hipped sex android thing, all angles everywhere. It's kinda the same as why I like Dolly Parton so much too, Dolly directly went super feminine, almost grotesquely feminine with the big boobs and the big hair and the big lips. Gaga's the opposite, instead of exaggerated curves she rocks exaggerated angles. From Feministing, "her often physically distorting costumes show that the pursuit of the feminine ideal is far from natural." The other thing is her hypersexual image, which is kinda funny because she tries to play it like it's no big deal but she knoooooooooows, she knows people will make it a big deal

It's only in sitting here and listening to acoustic lady gaga that I realize I never want to post about music in this forum again. It's actually a pretty awful experience all around, and the forced justification to discuss the things that I may or may not like is incredibly repelling. Yes, I do need to consider that the site and comic were launched as an indie-elitist haven, but given that indie-elitists tend to pride themselves on their intelligence, the total lack of tolerance is quite indicative of the opposite. It's like when atheists take their beliefs to a dogmatic level only comparable to radical muslims or the catholics without the slightest touch of irony.
That said, Lady Gaga's new cd is really great. I get the selling factors and the cult of personality that surrounds her, and I am thankful knowing that she's talented enough to back up the hype. I'm calling it now that she'll be around for a while, barring unforeseen extreme events.
On the flipside of overexposure, after 2007 being dubbed the year of Timbaland, Shock Value 2 has been an underwhelming pile of shit, with the only mentionable collaborating artists being Chad Kroger and an army of pre-legal teenaged girls. Result: generic and played out, even for him.

In a lot of cases, I would agree with you, Beat Mouse. Music is about having a good time, right? Except, in cases like Khar, I am near positive that Khar's musical tastes are based on nothing but what he enjoys listening to. There's a difference between elitist hipsters who are basing their music on what it is cool to like, and cool to hate, and people who just have very specific tastes in their music. And from what I can tell, Khar's tastes are not very limited at all.

I understand that Khar is not the rudimentary troll that he likes to play. I was more inclined to post something akin to that in the rap thread that fell to similar responses, but either one would serve the same deaf ears. Being special assholes who like other assholes is just the same something I'm totally used to (especially when it comes to forums) but there's a certain extent to which it's not even worth reading when it's a slim 10% of posts that are actually talking about the unpopular topic of discussion and you have to filter through the unnecessary opposition.

I'm saying that if there is a thread where folks want to suck the cock of the big four record labels knowing full well what they are doing as consenting adults, they should be permitted to without recrimination. And I'm suggesting that if you find that mentality genuinely difficult to comprehend, you can rationalize the thread as a diversion of those with whom you brook little common ground from other threads. In any event, the Paris Hilton album was more or less the aural equivalent of you shoving a microphone up your own arse, and yes it sold. Demonstrating that plenty of folks will buy an album just because other folks are buying that album. This phenomenon is one of great interest to media studies folks because the so-called "long tail" has failed to manifest. In other words, the greater diversity of choice available through the internet was predicted to end the blockbuster, and it hasn't. Instead we see a further stratification of the media market into the blockbuster and the niche product. Why has greater choice failed to kill the blockbuster, despite the fact that logically it would provide more media products closer to the particular tastes of each individual? Because, ultimately, a great number of folks simply want media that other people also want, so that they can discuss the media, experience it together, have a sense of belonging and common ground.
I'm not saying that this is why I, or you necessarily listen to music. Nor am I saying that this is a necessarily worse reason to listen to music than any other. But can you, with a straight face, deny that this is why many people who comprise the majority of the music buying population listen to music?

I think an important distinction pilsner doesn't seem to be making here is: Of course Khar wouldn't think of this thread as a ghetto for "pleebs," because as he mentioned, the Top 40 tracks or whatever of the Billboard music charts don't necessarily best represent the music that "pleebs" like and listen to.

food industry is even more toned-down in my experience, from living with some hardcore activists over the past several years "food industry" tends to be way down on their list of Stuff To Worry About. they tend to get more angry at wal-mart than mcdonald's.

They're massively over prescribed so that's hardly surprising, if you give a drug to people it isn't suitable for you'll see poor results. There is no way of increasing seratonin levels that is effective for all patients, therefore it makes sense for people to have a number of options and SSRIs in many cases do exactly what you claimed they didn't, alter the balance of chemicals in the body. Just because a drug has been misused doesn't mean it has no value and should be dismissed.

For the record, the "sigh" was me finally getting fed up with zerodrone/Jackie Blue and banning him.
The REASON I banned him is not that he is unhappy with the comic, or that he had criticism. It was that he had the sheer GALL to assume that he knew my motivations, state of mind, and feeling towards my own work. He put words in my mouth, he was a condescending prick, he's done it before and been warned, and I got sick of it, so he's gone.
in point of fact, jackie blue was not banned. his IP was banned which means that i, his sister who usually lives with him, as well as his roommates, were also banned because we share a network. he sent a cordial email to you, jeph, on my behalf, asking to simply ban him and not punish everyone he lives with as well. that email was never replied to (did you even read it?)
also, he was never warned, definitely not in the sense of "stop talking about such and such or i will ban you". if he had been warned as such then he would have went back to the music section, where 99.99% of his posts exist. of the 3,000+ posts of his, only 180 or so were in the comic discussion forum, and of those, less than a dozen were posts that you said anything negative about.
there are people on here who are far bigger pricks than jackie. they just aren't pricks to you, so you let it slide. jackie was a very good contributor to the music forum and to ban him from everything, including that, without any real or specific warning, is you, mr. jacques, being a prick. of course you have the right to be a prick on your own website, but it doesn't change the prick-ness of it.

I always appreciated his contributions to the music sub-forum and I never saw his comments in the comic discussion sub-forum because There Be Dragons. Comic discussion aside, I don't think he was as much of a dick as people made him out to be. I think people on this forum just have an extremely low tolerance for people who don't agree with them or have opinions that offend them.

i'm biased and i am not my brother's keeper and blah blah blah but i read just about everything he posted from mid-'07 thru being banned, when i was still lurking, and i think you're remembering a handful of "bad" posts out of a couple thousand "good" ones. i think that's a pretty good ratio and 99% of the time he was just being funny or laid-back or both. maybe it wasn't apparent if you don't know him in real life, but he certainly had a lot of "friends" on here who thought he was a pretty nice guy.

That mighta been back when it was an RSF and subsumed with fyads. It's a pretty decent environment. NMD is basically a Muse hivemind and I have little to no interest in it. Normally when someone gets banned around here I just assume that the person who banned him had a good enough reason for it, seeing they are the ones who have been trusted with that level of power. But then again, no one I really really like here has been banned. This place has always been run on the whims of the people in charge, I mean, Trollstormur became a mod because Jeph was drunk and Troll posted some funny owl memes. When people try to talk about this place like it is a democracy and everyone has the right to thier own say on who gets banned or not, they just have to realise that in the grand scheme of things around here, them complaining about someone being banned is not going to change anything; in fact it will probably just piss the admins off and the banned person probably will never get unbanned.

i am quite sure if he were unbanned he would play nice. i am still waiting for an example of someone who was around as long as jackie, was generally as civil as he was, and tried to be an all-around okay guy and was also banned. est made the claim but nothing has been served up as a comparable example. i know this isn't a democracy but it's not like jackie was banned and then made a fake account the next day to complain about it. he hasn't done anything except to email jeph politely requesting he be allowed to post in the music forum, which is a forum that had nothing to do with him being banned.

One thing I keep noticing about modern pop music (this goes for a lot of rock as well) is the tediously narrow range of lyrical content and themes. Maybe one reason I like old pop music is that they sung about a more fulsome range of things, like nuclear war, cigarettes and being fashionista highwaymen. They can differ a lot here. UK radio is hugely dominated by the BBC, and unlike the US we have national stations. If a song were to be playlisted by Radio 1 and the biggest station Radio 2 it wouldn't need airtime anywhere else to get enough exposure to do well in the singles chart. Conversely, getting banned by the BBC from their stations would mean instant chart death if it was based on radio play, but the controversy surrounding the BBC's banning of Relax by Frankie Goes To Hollywood probably helped its enormous success. It also means songs can get pushed briefly high by their fans, like the recent Rage number one or Iron Maiden's sole number one hit Bring Your Daughter... To The Slaughter. Plus, you get the oddities lower down the chart, like Malcolm Middleton hitting 31 with We're All Going To Die.

That's what I like about it. Parts of Gaga's image is disturbing as fuck. The "Bad Romance" video is a brilliant piece of film, if you ask me. It perfectly complements and expands the already dark, creepy vibe of the song itself.

I've watched a horror movie where this guy looks in mirrors and sees a different world reflected in the abandoned mall he's working at (anyone care to tell me what this movie is? I forget). Anyways, at one point, it shows as a woman's mouth is pulled open to the point where her jaw is literally ripped off of her head and I just couldn't stop laughing watching it because it was so incredibly fucked up.

I don't really like her videos; I find them kinda boring. The fetishy latex outfits don't really interest me and overall the whole vibe just reminds me of horror/sci fi movies where a character comes back to consciousness in a lab after some unknown event. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, I suppose, but it means nothing when stripped of a threatening narrative. It ends up boiling down to a kink that I don't share, so into the shit I don't care about pile it goes.

I find that pretty weird (in a good way) when people urge me to check her music's out on the Internet while I was fan of her material since she released her album in 2008. I'm really glad that people appreciate her music though. She's incredibly talented (and cute as hell)
