Title: WCT 14 Dec - 18 Dec
Post by: akronnick on 13 Dec 2009, 20:14
Just to get the ball rolling.

Option 5 also aplies to people who live in Miami, Phoenix and San Diego.

Also it's good that Cosette is OK.

So... Is it just me, or are both Friday and Monday's comics numbered 1555?

/spills wine [chessy opera voice] How can I go on,
My burden is to heavy.[/cheesy opera voice]

Maybe Jeph will fix it after he's done drawing on strippers.

Hey, San Diego got rain too. Up here above LA it was still cloudy, but got better as the day went on. Tuesday was the worst day, with nearly two inches of rain and temps as low as 40F (How the fuck do you stand anything lower than that, most of the rest of the country?). Wednesday was beautiful and clear.

So... Is it just me, or are both Friday and Monday's comics numbered 1555?

It's just you (paranoia +5).

As for the comic; wait so he writes a strip about masturbation and expects us to believe his hand is sore from drawing? Sure, Jeph, suuuuuure.

Also, just to make sure: is Faye still rooming with Marten? Because she never seems to show up there except in group settings anymore. The only pairs seen in there are Marten/Dora and Pintsize/Winslow. It's never Faye sitting on the couch snarking at Marten or something.

I like it when Jeph draws those relaxed poses, like Dora today, or Hannelore explaining the facts of life to Winslow.

Dragon's Lair is indeed awesome.  Goddammit I haven't lived in Austin for five years, lived there for four while I was "going" to college, and Jeph had to go and make me HOMESICK.

There's quite a track record with Steve and their bathroom. 393, and the one I can't find where he shaves in there.

Ah, Dora's such a helpful soul. But to be honest, I don't see any woman actually doing this. I mean... she has to use that john herself, after all.

So doing things to his junk (other than the obvious) in others' bathrooms is a behavior pattern for Steve (remember Pintsize's 'Castro' beard?). Somebody better warn Hanners. She'd have to burn the place down.

D'awww. All Dora wants to do is curl up like a cat, but Marten's skinny frame just doesn't have sufficient lap for her to pull it off.
Maybe she could try Faye's...
Title: Re: WCT 14 Dec - 18 Dec
Post by: akronnick on 14 Dec 2009, 03:09
Even with her extra padding, I beleive Dora will find Faye considerably less cuddly than Marten.

In fact, I don't beleive anyone, anywhere has ever used the word 'cuddly' to describe Faye.

(links to several occasions where Faye has been described as 'cuddly' by other characters in the comic in 3, 2, ...)

Ah, yes, I forgot about Faye's defensive spines (a separate mechanism to her offensive barbs) for a moment. Who else around here has a lap?

Hannelore? No; flailing is not conducive to curling up.
Marigold? Combine Faye's reaction with Hanners only about one-quarter as severe. Still not happening.
Luna? Unlikely, hasn't even met this one yet.
Sven? Would have been adorable if she were twelve or something, and Sven wasn't such a man-whore. Currently far too creepy.
Penne-lope? Depends if Wil is in the room or not (she might not even notice if she were in turn sitting in Wil's lap. Yay for recursion!).
Who else?

Having spent waaay too much time in the company of the military I don't know of anyone that comfortable to state, "I'm going to whack off in your bathroom, just take a minute.  Watch my beer for me."

Maybe I was hangin' with the wrong crowd.

Tai? almost as bony as Marten.
Jimbo? Maybe, if he took a shower.
Angus? The stink eye that Faye would give her would melt glass.

That leaves Veronica Vance, but Marten might have a problem with that.

Maybe she should just stick to Marten, but try the side without the arm of the couch in the way.

Dude! No! Cold, wet porcelain? Not sexy. There's a place for sex, sex of all types. It's called a bed. You're supposed to wash your bed linens on a regular basis in the first dam place!

Of course, the shower wand doesn't reach to the bedroom, but that's a different story.

A fairly long monitor cord doesn't cost all that much, USB and power cords even less. Certainly cheaper than a laptop if all you want to do is free yourself from the desk.

I bet it's one of those freebies from the Audubon Society or something like that. I once donated a few dollars to them to get a complimentary fleece blanket, which somehow put me on every environmental PAC mailing list known to man (generating a ton of wasteful junk mail, irony of ironies). At least they keep me well-supplied with return address stickers.

And I was apparently the first one to vote. Good timing I guess. Yay for sexing up that pie on the dinner table (or for the other gender, the, um spatula? Whole carrot? Baby carrot? I dunno.), although doin' it for the Weta mocap people was tempting.

I'm pretty sure Sven being her BROTHER would be a teensy bit more of an issue than his man-whore status. But as long as we're on family, her dad had a decent sized lap from the looks of him. At least until he asked about her oral hygiene again.

Yeah, but then there's all that weight on the mattress with you, taking up valuable flailing room. But then, I've adapted to sitting in a chair during my, erm "sessions". At least it leans back. And I always feel eyes on me, but that's just the jaguar picture.

Sexiest opening sequence (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMYyPmaXlaQ) ever! The breaking dawn, sun glinting off the waves, afterburners gaping like dragon's nostrils, sleek engines of destruction climbing into a bruise-coloured sky... Pity the rest of the movie sucked. Roomba's certainly got the fighter-jock attitude down; pulling straight into a vertical bank immediately after take-off. A flying roomba immediately reminded me of Spindrift, the rather dorky spaceship from Land Of The Giants, which probably just shows how much bad Saturday morning TV I watched growing up.

Or, given that he has no control surfaces whatsoever, the torque of the turbine is pulling him over like that. On the other hand, if you really want to give your Roomba a jet engine, I expect someone is working on the mod already, just because.
Hmm...I wonder if those obstacle detection routines can be used as landing radar?

The Roomba is just a much less aerodynamic F-104....

Probably a bit less then what would be needed for the average pig.

Catapults, jet engines, and rockets are wonderful things.

With enough thrust the body of the roomba itself should provide adequate lift. The little fins on the side are just for control.

Hah! First strip in quite a while to provoke prolonged laugh-out-loudiness (the panel 4 expressions are priceless). Coincidentally, just a couple of days ago UK Quest broadcast the Mythbusters episode where they tried to turn a vacuum cleaner into a jet engine - but actually ended up with a flame-thrower. Pintsize's next project, perhaps...

Akima, while you're here - I sent you a PM about your avatar some weeks ago, I guess you didn't see it. Where is your avatar from? I like the art style and if it's a comic or graphic novel I'd be interested in reading the whole thing. Thanks.

Eh ?

Guys have you not noticed her reaction in the last panel ?

Theres no fury going on. She's just criticizing HERSELF for being overly sassy.

Yeah, come on, do you remember the story of the boy that cried "wolf"?

Well, here is the story of the girl that gave sassy responses all the times.

Can I just say - really creepy timing, as today is the birthday of my friend who killed himself.  This is always the day when I think about him - and then I read the comic.

Don't worry, i still found it hilarious!

You only read the comic on the anniversery of his suicide?  That's weird.

Sorry, I can be a real asshole at times.

Options?

"Let me just finish: The guy puts the shotgun in his mouth, blows off half of his face, and lives! What an idiot!"
"Nuh-uh, you're going to have to bring a lot more than a dead dad to catch me off guard."

Unfortunately, both will result in a slow and painful death for Angus.

Does the comic title refer to today's specials? Got me wondering there.

Here's how the next comic goes;  Angus still doesn't believe her, Faye gets mad and walks away, Angus stands there dumbfounded and is about to utter profanity when suddenly a rocket propelled Roomba flies through the shop and thwacks him in the head, knocking him out cold.

if it doesn't happen, someone need to ask Jeph to draw Angus being nailed by the vroomba next time he's at an event doing sketches.

What exactly is Faye going to do?
I thought the talk about Angus was him leaving/hiding due to embarrassment. But, as Faye so aptly pointed out, one could not entirely blame for for thinking Faye's pulling one over on him. She has no reason to do anything to him.
But I can see him going home and Marigold being all worried because he's all upset and then find out it's because of Faye and then jump to conclusions about Faye and Angus and be miserable...and then Marigold runs into Hanners who is worried and Marigold tells Hanners about Angus and Faye, and then Hanners accidentally tells Marten and Dora, and then Dora says something about it work....
Fun times!

True, no place is safe when trying to outrun the Wrath of Faye. I'm halfway expecting Angus to realize Faye's situation and stare blankly for a moment... then grin as he learns that he has found the ledge he needs to gain the upper hand. Like that guy in Tienanmen Square, standing up against the tank (then valiantly gumming up the tread gears).
Title: Re: WCT 14 Dec - 18 Dec
Post by: Carl-E on 17 Dec 2009, 00:28
The Tienemann square guy did not get squished, although he's not been seen or heard of again since then...

As for today's comic, the only question I had was, as Angus was running past Dora, was there fear in his eyes, or tears?

He slowly backs away from Faye, then runs.  I'm not completely convnced he's running from her, as much as running away from what he just did to her without realizing it.  Poor guy must feel like a little ball of shit after that.  Nothing Faye could do would hurt him more... well, not emotionally.

Physical pain's always an option, but it doesn't look like Faye's going to pursue it.  She probably realizes how much he's already doing to himself - why add to it?  He's doing a fine job.

Yay empathy?

Weeeeeellllll Faye has always been described, by herself and others, as being heavier-set than the rest of the cast. (Not really overweight, but you know, not skinny.)  It's just that now the art actually shows her to be that way. In many of the  earlier strips, she looked pretty much the same size as Dora just with more boobs and ass (and that's partially why people were always all "wtf is she talking about when she makes comments about her weight?").

That said, even Dora is kinda looking more... full-bodied all over lately.

Quite the contrary actually. Mortified characters tend to ad a lot of drama in a story. Jeph ain't going to pass that opportunity. This could lead Angus and Faye into romantic progress!

Now I shall resume the first 3 issues of the week with a single word for each of them!

1556 : ewwww....
1557 : O . O
1558 : "facepalm"

Neither O . O nor "facepalm" are words.  Well, facepalm is a word, but you have it as an action...

Just pickin' nits, don't mind me...

And no, Angus will not die a horrible death.  But he'll wish he had from sheer mortification.  (get it?  "mort"- ification?  Oh.  Sorry)

Oh but I DO mind the nitpicking my dear Carl-E. That post's been fixed now  :-D

While I can understand Angus's reaction in this latest comic, I must say he has chosen poorly...

And Dora described herself as skinny and quite flatchested - she is neither right now. Correct description of would be ideal figured.

OK, aside from opening yourself up to all kinds of flames, please remember that ideal is in the eye of the beholder.  Dora, if somehow made real, would still be incredibly skinny, nearly "model thin", although with boobs.

Personally, I think all you're seeing is an increased realism in the drawings, they're less stylized, and have more "dimension" to them, making everyone look bigger.  I know you've said before that you don't like the new style, but some of us do!

I think thats what Angus fears, but I think Faye feels bad that their relationship is based on sass-talkery that when she is serious he cant tell.  If anything I think she will approach him and talk to him about it...or she feels angus is a runner which enforcers her fears of abandonment.

Post by: Mr. Doctor on 17 Dec 2009, 08:45
I feel bad for Angus...

This has nothing to do with the Faye at all since it's just my personal opinion:
I don't really like when people do a lot of sass-talkery but they don't want to talk about a specific subject.
A few months ago I was reading a thread about gore stuff and there was this user laughing a lot with every picture but suddenly gets all serious about a picture of a baby. And the user is all like: "Don't put those pictures, they are offensive because my baby died after he was born".

And yes, that's very very sad... But don't go all offended if you were sass-talking about dead people all the friggin time and just get offended when it comes to something that has to do with your life.

This is the reason to why I don't think Faye get's sad with Suicide-jokes, some user here posted a comic about her making jokes about her situation... She's just sad because of the same reasons LeeC posted.

I feel bad for both of them.  Angus for realizing he just made a huge gaffe whihc might lead to his demise. And Faye because she finally opens up to a guy who isn't Maren and he first doesn't take her seriously and next runs for the hills.  Hardly encouraging.  As someone who also finds it difficult to open up to people, I sympathize with her.

Um... no she doesn't. Not to me, anyway. She looks totally average.

Dora is no longer as skinny as she used to be, I agree, (and same goes for Tai, Hanners, and Marten) but still quite thin.

How is this overweight, seriously???

(Btw, my own figure has always been closer to Dora's, so it's not like I'm saying Faye not overweight out of any private vanity considerations.)

o.o That's not her stomach sticking out in the 1st panel, that's mostly the curve of her HIP.  Her tummy is relatively flat, as in the 3rdpanel (note that the shading does not imply any convex curve).

Unless you wanna say that Cosette, as in the 1st panel:

He's busy kicking himself, and any attempt at comfort, reassurance, etc. is highly unwelcome right now. If Marigold was less of wierdo-shut-in er more socially experienced, she might understand he needs to hear that later, not now. Right or wrong, at present Angus is furious at himself, and anyone trying to get between him and his anger is simply a target.

The funny thing is, if she really watches Neon Genesis Evangelion, Marigold's seen this sort of thing go on over and over and over again—people so down on themselves that they simply won't accept any assurance they're not as terrible as they think they are.

Yeah, she's been acting that way ever since he said she was cute (but meant no interest, just academically stated it).  Ever since then, it seems like everything she says to him screams "i really like you a whole really lot" in that geeky-shy-girl way.  Which can be great if you like the girl too.  If you don't though - well, it can get messy when she finally realizes the truth, especially if she's been building this up in her head, which is entirely possible.

And if someone do something really stupid and feel really angry because of how stupid they think they are.. I just leave them alone for some time and then talk to them.

Hmmm, yeah... Fair enough. I just think that idiot is a word that is way to harsh for this situation. It was just shitty timing, that's all.

But still, I think it's good that he finally knows more about Faye.  :-)

Faye's dad is awesome.  He makes people feel horrible, even years after his death!

And no Marigold, Angus is not an insensitive asshole, just a truthful one.  But at least he feels bad about it.

Hahaha, that was brilliant. Had to laugh at that one. Hey, is it just me or does angry Marigold look a lot like angry Faye there?

Only if the only thing you compare is their respective bust-lines. Marigold and Faye have distinctly different jaw-lines, noses, cheeks, facial proportions and (though this is more transient) hair. The level of similarity between "angry Faye" and "angry marigold" is the same as between either of them and "angry Dora".

I think Angus is just a bit of an idiot, which I think is something Faye is far more willing to forgive than intentional acts of assholeness.

Jeph your top ten list sucks.  Everything is either droning electronic stuff or lo-fi indie that sees lack of effort or technical skill as a virtue.  And almost all of them are rehashes of stuff the same people have done better in the last few years.  It's like the top ten list an indie version of Rolling Stone would put out.

Faye looks definitely overweight now.

And Dora described herself as skinny and quite flatchested - she is neither right now. Correct description of would be ideal figured.

Faye overweight?
I would say she and marigold are normal size as opposed to other characters who range from skinny to skeletal (hanners).
It seems that you come from a faminestruck region ... :D

Okay I'd like to share a fever-dream I had last night concerning this current arc.

Angus continues to pester Faye until they agree to have a Battle Royale, with the winner deciding where their relationship goes from there. If Faye wins, she gets to do whatever she pleases with his (dead) body, and if Angus wins, he will take her out on a (proper) date. The battle royale in this case is just a regular tag team battle to the death, with Marten teaming with Angus and Dora teaming with Faye.  At the start of the epic battle, all four combatants reveal their mutant powers. Faye transforms into Godzilla, Angus into King Ghidorah, Marten into MechaGodzilla, and Dora into MechaKing Ghidorah.  At one point it becomes apparent that Marten and Dora, who didn't want to be in the battle anyway, will have to fight each other. They spend like 10 minutes shuffling around each other and looking at their feet until finally they both self-destruct from the sheer amount of awkwardness.

Anyway, Angus eventually wins, and Faye keeps her word and lets him go out on a date with her. The next day, she tells any surviving humans that her date with Angus was, "Eh, it was okay."

FIN

I...I think I just pioneered Questionable Content/Godzilla slash-fiction. What the hell is wrong with me?

OK, aside from opening yourself up to all kinds of flames, please remember that ideal is in the eye of the beholder.  Dora, if somehow made real, would still be incredibly skinny, nearly "model thin", although with boobs.

Personally, I think all you're seeing is an increased realism in the drawings, they're less stylized, and have more "dimension" to them, making everyone look bigger.  I know you've said before that you don't like the new style, but some of us do!

Pretty much this.

Also, I'm not sure if it the new hair or just subtle changes in Jeph's art, but Marigold almost looks hot in Panel 3 today.

Mothra would of course be Hannelore. Who else is the mediator between all the other monsters. The two fairy gaurdians would also of course be Pintsize and Winslow, or Momo and Winslow, I cant decide yet.

Rodan? Hmmm...the only character that makes any sense at all is Steve maybe.

Also, I now have a story in my head for a Questionable Content movie done in the style of Godzilla: Final Wars. I am lol'ing at myself so hard right now.

After some extra thought I decided that Pintsize should be BabyGodzilla.

Well*, Rodan is a gigantic mutated pteranodon. Mothra is, well, a moth. Oh, and also gigantic—not sure about mutated, as Mothra seems to have some sort of mystic origins involving teeny-tiny twin girls. But that's not important right now.

I find it mildly confusing that anyone expects violence over this; her father's death is the one thing Faye's never seemed aggressive about (she talks about doing so, but we never see it), which may be part of her problem. I really think this may be good for Faye, since a check on the sass, a honking suit of full-plate armor if ever there was one, might make her finally stop avoiding her problems. Actually, I wonder if she won't go to Angus and, if not apologize, at least acknowledge to him, as she did to Dora, that the incident was not entirely his fault.

In other words, growth opportunity for Faye. Which is why I voted for her talking to Corrine first in the last poll. Also why I don't find any viable options in today's.

*Yeah, I got post-jumped. But just look at all that typing! Think of my poor fingers, already sore from manipulating ornament hanger wires. No way am I not posting this thing.

Hey, I warned everyone that that entire scenario came to me in a fever dream last night.  Also, the violence I'm envisioning doesn't stem from this current misunderstanding, but from a competition to determine whether Faye will accept a date from Angus or not.

Okay, I gotta go finish my script for Questionable Godzilla: Final Wars and send it to Toho Inc.

I too agree that Angus needs to either get away from everybody or shut up.  He is seriously bringing everybody down with him in his angst.

The funny thing is, if she really watches Neon Genesis Evangelion, Marigold's seen this sort of thing go on over and over and over again—people so down on themselves that they simply won't accept any assurance they're not as terrible as they think they are.

But, then again, there was nothing more angst-filled than Evangelion.  That (and a day when I watched some episodes of Wedding Peach, traveled to my local anime club, and watched End of Evangelion) is the reason why I will never watch that series again.

Mothra's already in a committed relationship. Teeny-tiny twin girls, remember?

Which makes me realize a freaking moth managed to score the holy grail of dating—minus the 8 inch tall part, of course. Only other person I know of to pull that off has been Ken Wahl.

Angst is no fun if one is angsting alone. And has already been previously stated, Angus is behaving pretty normally for someone who just made a fool of himself (nevermind that it was partly Faye's sassiness's fault). People who angst typically won't shut up about it for days also. Things to look forward to!

Awww man, and I spent literally minutes trying to think of good options for today's poll. I thought I had all the bases covered. (actually, I spent most of the time thinking how to incorporate a refence to England into the poll in a way that made sense, in a Tom Stoppard, theatre of the absurd kind of way.)

In the end, I think this episode will be good for Faye, Angus, and Marigold.

Marigold will realize that Angus doesn't think of her like that and she should look elsewhere for affection.

Faye will learn that sass is not (always) the answer.

And Angus, while he may not experience any personal growth, he will enjoy the universal health care and frequent flyer miles when he applies for refugee status in Manitoba.

Ah, it's not your fault, it's my Great Expectations. I wanted like the Dickens for that reference to be something on the order of  "Just lie there and think of England." But, no matter how I stared at it, the text didn't change, even into a door knocker that looked something like a man's face with a bound jaw, which would have been, I suppose, as strange a Tale as one could find in any Two Cities.

One can actually find refuge in Manitoba? I thought one mainly found bison.

More deer than bison - they're more in Saskatchewan and Alberta.

All I've ever done in MB is learn that German soldiers drink lots of beer, dance with each other and try to pick up First Nations women.  And some artillery stuff.
