New LP is all but done. Finished in January for sure. Not sure what's going to be on it but I'm pretty certain there's a new version of the song 'Winterwind' which was up on the myspace a while ago. Unfortunately we won't see the record until the middle of 2010. I wonder if Blood Under The Bridge is going to be the title? Sounds quite appropriate. Reports from the studio suggest they were really happy with what's been recorded thus far so I'm very excited. I assume people knew about the Congress EP they released last year. That absolutely destroyed me. Tim's two songs are amongst my favourite he has ever done. Incredible work.

In other related news there will probably be a new EP by the rock band .22, which is the other band of Bottomless Pit bassist Brian Orchard. There's also a massive odds and sods compilation in the works which will hopefully see the light soon. If you like Bottomless Pit but haven't heard .22, now's a good time to catch up. All three of their records are on iTunes. In particular, the second album The Worker is one of my all time favourite albums. The last one The Patriots is no slouch either. I actually talked to Tim about the possibility of Brian writing songs for Bottomless Pit, maybe the new record will have a surprise for us. He's a terrific songwriter and has this really unique voice which I never get tired of hearing.

Alternately, there's always Silkworm. I heartily recommend all of their records if you don't have them. They didn't make a bad one and they all seem to get better as I get older.

Oh, this is good news. Bottomless Pit is a band that I listen to in fits, it seems. When Hammer of the Gods came out it made everything else irrelevant to me for about a month.

Blood Under the Bridge is definitely the title of the new record.

When you compare it to most of Silkworm's artwork it is pretty superb.

Yes!

I thought the art on the first record was quite shoddy.

That's an evocative title anyhow. Hammer of the Gods seemed in many ways to be about coming to terms with a sheer bloody-minded randomness of fate. The new title possibly suggests that it will deal with moving on from that, exploring what comes next.

I mean I guess the actual quality of the photos and what have you weren't of the best quality, especially at 12" size but the concept and layout was excellent.

Hammer of the Gods seemed in many ways to be about how rockin' Led Zeppelin III is

By that logic this Blood Under the Bridge thing would be about listening to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, no?

Conversely, the whole package of the Congress EP was amazing.

It was also my absolute favourite record of 2008. 'Red Pen' and 'Pitch' are just incredible.

Contrary to what you might have read about in The Chicago Reader, absolutely nothing is happening on my Birthday (June 12th) in Chicago.

Nothing at all. I hear the whole city it going to close down for the weekend. It's nothing to do with the subject of this thread either.

Man, looking at some of the video evidence of the BBQ kind of makes me embarrassed--headbanging during Bottomless Pit's set? The fuck was I thinking?

Nevertheless it was easily one of the best shows I've ever seen and Tim Midgett is basically the nicest guy, and it was all I could do not to be a total fanboy in front of him, even though I pretty much failed at that. Hopefully I get to see them in the near future and not be as blubbering as I was that night.

I took a walk this morning and listened to Congress and Hammer of the Gods in succession; fuck, the music this band makes is absolutely G.D. brilliant.

I got Blood Under the Bridge in the mail today! HYPE TRAIN IS COMMENCING.

I really like the album artwork, and the package even comes with a neat Bottomless Pit pin.

My first impressions about the songs that aren't previewed (note that I really suck at taking in a song on the first hearing, especially lyrics, so this is going to be crap):

"Rhinelander" is a quiet song that doesn't sound like anything Bottomless Pit has done before. I didn't follow the lyrics very well due to a pathetic attempt at multitasking.... EDIT: Second listen. Seems to be a rather somber song about what I'm guessing to be two people who hail from the town/city which the song is titled after, one regretting leaving, one regretting staying.

"Late" has a pretty awesome, fast beat. Sounds a lot like Silkworm. There's a really weird off-key chord that I keep hearing on what I'm guessing is Midgett's guitar (?). This is a really good song.

"Dixon", wow drums. And then rockin' guitars and bass play. This song is flat out rock. Instrumental. I like!

"Kiss Them All" is a lot more mellow than the last three tracks before it. I'm actually able to take in the lyrics first take! Love song (go figure from the song title), with lines like "I've been waiting for the real you/ all along." Damn this song is pretty.

"Is It a Ditch" is going to require me listening far more than once to catch all that Andy Cohen is singing, and then longer to try to comprehend what's going on (considering this is from the person who wrote "The Ram" is that a surprise?). The tone of this song reminds me a little bit of "Angry Swan" and a bit of "38 Souls".

With these songs and the previewed ones, my general impressions are that this sounds a lot more upbeat than the previous Bottomless Pit albums, and a little bit more rockin' (by the way I love "Dixon"). I'm not even going to try to say if I like this more or less than the last two releases; it's a different sound. First impressions is that this is a great, great album. And a nifty pin is included!

SO HYPED. TIME TO LISTEN TO THIS AGAIN.

Title: Re: bottomless pit third record hype!
Post by: Trynant on 26 Jul 2010, 05:42
Well, I think I'm on my fourth or fifth listen of Blood Under the Bridge and it gets better each listen. To be honest I liked "Red Pen" and "Pitch" a little better than the songs on this LP, but that is the equivalent of saying I prefer diamonds over sapphires: they are all beautiful gems (okay, that was a little cheesy).

As for what songs I like on this LP:

"Dixon" is my favorite song to "rock out" to, even if it is just an instrumental track.

"38 Souls" is probably my favorite overall song, it's pretty damn wonderful. "Winterwind" comes in as a close second (hearing that little bit of "Bar Ice" at the end of the song was a bittersweet stroke of genius). "Is It a Ditch" is amazing as well.

This is definitely not a case where all the previewed songs are the only good ones on the LP; all of the songs are exceptional. Personally I would say "Kiss Them All" is the weakest song on the album, but even that is better than the best song that most other bands could make.

Be warned that I am very hyped for this album, and that means a lot of this post is under heavy bias towards Blood Under the Bridge. Nevertheless, right now this is my record of the year.

Lastly, whether to say this is better or worse than Congress or Hammer of the Gods, I think it is as good as the previous releases. The only thing is Blood Under the Bridge is a different, possibly more upbeat sound than the previous two albums. Like I said before, it is hard to compare this latest EP to the earlier releases when so much is different.

Wonderful though. Get it when you can.

Side note: I have only been listening to the CD. Hopefully I can get a working turntable soon and hear what this sounds like on vinyl, but even in digital format this is a great, great EP.

Is that a sign that you just ordered a wonderful album or is there something funny about that quote that I'm missing? I'm pretty dense.

EDIT: Finished listening to Blood Under the Bridge for what must be the tenth time. I just looked at how many times I've listened to Bottomless Pit songs on my desktop, and I'm pretty sure I'm a fan. "The Cardinal Movements" 34 times, "Red Pen" 32 times, "Fish Eyes" and "Angry Swam" 31 times, each song from Hammer of the Gods and Congress has been listened to more than twenty times. This is not counting listening in my car or on my laptop. That's a shitload of Bottomless Pit :-o

As for Blood Under the Bridge, I think if I were to rate this album against Hammer of the Gods and Congress, the order would be Congress > Blood Under the Bridge > Hammer of the Gods, but this has only been after a day of the listening to the Blood Under the Bridge. "Red Pen" and "Pitch" are just so damn good, but I can see "Winterwind," "Late," "Is It a Ditch," and "38 Souls" growing on me a whole lot. "Dixon" has already wormed its way to my heart, or at least to my need to bang my head.

As far as possible cons to this latest LP, I think "Rhinelander" and "Kiss Them All" are some of the simplest and sparsest songs lyrically that either Silkworm or Bottomless Pit has produced (this is only the lyrics I'm talking about, all the songs on the LP have masterful playing on every instrument). The lyrics aren't banal at all, just sparse. I could be missing out on a lot of subtext in these two songs, but I personally don't think there's a lot of content word-wise in them compared to some of the poetry I've heard from Tim and Andy. I still haven't gotten to grasping "Q.E.D.", it's this quiet song jammed between Andy belting out his words in "Is It a Ditch" and "38 Souls" and it just keeps going in one ear and out the other. As a last "con" (and I emphasize the quotations here), Blood Under the Bridge sounds less previous Bottomless Pit songs and more like Silkworm songs. This LP is still a long ways from being another Silkworm album, it's more like a bridge over the gap between Bottomless Pit's and Silkworm's sounds.

Please note that the last paragraph is comprised of nitpicks at best. I am immensely satisfied with my purchase of Blood Under the Bridge and want all of you to hear this record and enjoy it as much as I am. It will also be nice to hear other people's opinions just because I am a wreck at trying to articulate my feelings about this music, and I know there are other people on this forum who can say what I have said with much more brevity and elegance.

More coherent commenting will follow once I get off this binge of Bottomless Pit.

I take it that means congratulations on getting your copy then? Any thoughts so far?

Shameful secret: I don't have a turntable yet, so I've been listening to Blood Under the Bridge purely on CD/digital format until today. I got a chance to go to this old store that sells fabrics and audio equipment (it's an interesting place). The owner was nice enough to let me play the record on some of his best equipment.

I had doubts that I would be able to discern the difference between the digital and analog versions of Blood Under the Bridge and am happy to say my fears were unfounded. The music came in crystal clear, and now I'm more hyped for the band than ever.

By the way, out of all the songs in Silkworm's/Bottomless Pit's repetoire, the only one that makes me fight back tears is "Winterwind". The "Bar Ice" melody is utterly heart-wrenching, bittersweet and poignant. And I thought I didn't have a heart....

(also, had only had the digital versions of last two albums so going to get the records)

We need more hype for Blood Under the Bridge; the CD release is coming out in two days!

So who has gotten the 2x12? Am I the only one who is going to put out his first impressions of the album?

"Is It a Ditch?" is getting to be my favorite song that wasn't previewed, closely followed by "Late." I like all of the songs, but those two stick out for me along with "Winterwind" and "38 Souls." But damn, this is a good record. Still listening to it like crazy.

And dammit, I'm going to have to wait 'til Thursday to get a decent turntable.

I'm writing a thing about it, I'll post when a link when it's done. I had planned to weave in interviews but turns out they deliberately don't do press (which makes sense if you think about the overall concept of the band).

I love the new record. Highlights among highlights for me are 'Late', 'QED' and 'Summerwind' but it's all great really. Much more reflective than HOTG or Congress.

Tim M just dropped this bomb over on Electrical -

Quote from: tmidgett
Many months ago, someone asked if we'd ever reissue Libertine, the third Silkworm album.

We remastered it the other day. I thought it would be a trip into the olden days, but it was more like the olden days came rushing up to now. Shocked at how much I enjoyed it.

It will come out someday, once we get a cover together and vinyl cut and all that. Sounds pretty pretty pretty good.

So yeah, Libertine (aka the best fuckin' album ever) is being reissued on vinyl at some point in the future. Consider my pants thoroughly shat.

Hey fuckos, Tim M wants y'all to know that there are only a few copies of the original pressings of Firewater and Lifestyle available on the SKWM site here (http://www.silkworm.net/). Buy these records now, they are very hard to get hold of otherwise.

Next year will see Libertine and In The West (yes, it's happening!) reissued on vinyl so if you buy the above, you will be well on your way to having a decent chunk of the SKWM LPs on vinyl by next year.

Hey tommydski did you ever make that write-up of Blood Under the Bridge? I totally want to read it.

Also, for some reason "38 Souls" keeps getting played over and over.

Bumping for random question.

For some reason I'm messing around and trying to figure out how to play that big riff in "38 Souls" and I'm absolutely stumped on how Andy is playing that bit. I made something that sounded like what he's doing with the first chord, but progressing after that is impossible. Watching YouTube vids of him playing doesn't help (bad quality and his fingering looks completely different than what I did).

Anyone know what he's doing there? Different tuning maybe? Ugh.

Still love this album btw.
