Title: I merged these two shitty threads together
Post by: Dliessmgg on 12 Jan 2010, 05:19
Nomination rules:

1. Don't nominate posts of yourself.
2. Don't nominate something that's already been nominated. (I'm too lazy to go through everything and sort that stuff out.)
3. Blah.

All nominated posts will be put into 16 groups where you vote for them. The best two of each group can go into the tournament. (I'm assuming here that we will have much more than 32 nominated posts.) The tournament is normal one on one until there is a winner. Those who are not happy with these rules should whine for themselves. I make the contest, I make the rules.

Huh? Are nominating people or posts?

If I'd realised we were going to do this I would have held back my best posts until closer to the time of the ceremony.

But I've got an idea for a post that I've been working on for five years, and when I make that post this time next year it's going to blow all your minds. I'm talking some real paradigm shift stuff. They didn't even have the technology for me to make this post when I started thinking about it five years ago.

Clarified (where I think there was carification needed).

You expect me to remember posts from two weeks ago?

Also, shouldn't this be Post of the Year 2009? Bit early for 2010.

No see this is good. We can use this thread throughout the year to nominate posts as they come up, instead of having to remember a year's worth of shit.

And/or we can get a headstart on not giving a shit about ranking the quality of posts on a forum

(guess which one I am doing)

This is the nominations thread, which will be maintained throughout the year. Votes will be voted when the year has ended.

A year's a long time. Maybe we should do "post of the month" each month and then pit them against each other at the end of the year.

If we're really serious about this, that is.

Title: Wii Head-Tracking
Post by: LittleKey on 27 Jan 2010, 17:56
I recently rediscovered this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd3-eiid-Uw) video, and I want to try it. I have a Wii, and it'd be pretty awesome to have that 3d effect, let alone being able to connect the remote to my computer. But my problem is that apparently you need a blue-tooth equipped computer, and I don't think mine is. So my question is: How can I get this to work? Are there bluetooth drivers of some kind that I could download? Do I need to buy a bluetooth usb adapter?

Also I know this should be in computers and video games, but how often is that forum checked anyway? Although if you do want to move it I understand.
Title: Re: Wii Head-Tracking
Post by: jhocking on 27 Jan 2010, 18:11
Rediscovered indeed. I got the hardware (ie. a wiimote and led safety glasses) to try this out years ago. He's since demoed this technique at a TED conference a couple years ago:
http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/johnny_lee_demos_wii_remote_hacks.html

As for your question, get a Bluetooth USB dongle. You'll also need a bluetooth "stack" (stupid jargon that they use; that basically means a driver) for it to work. There are a bunch of different stacks available to download and not every one will work with the Wiimote, I forget which one exactly I used.

The glasses were easy too. Go to the hardware store and get safety glasses with LEDs on them. Then go to Radioshack to get IR LEDs to replace the bulbs with.

Awesome, thanks. Would this work?: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833156069&cm_re=bluetooth_adapter-_-33-156-069-_-Product.

Oh and i want to make sure... by connecting the wiimote to my computer, does that just enable it to work for that sample program with the targets, or can I actually use it as a cursor? Because I can imagine some Counterstrike: Source with a wiimote, and it is an amazing thought.

You split every good post into two or three parts, therefor rendering yourself unnominatable.  Sorry.

My roommate back in Sitka showed me this video a few weeks ago. Completely fucked my mind. I started thinking about what would happen if somebody developed a new Call of Duty game or something using this nifty little innovation. I then proceeded to shit myself out of sheer amazement.

That adapter looks fine. I mean, that's not the exact model I used and I'm not an expert in bluetooth hardware, but it looks like pretty much the same thing I got.

The program he provides only does the targets demonstration, but you can fine other wiimote programs to use it as a 3D mouse:
http://onakasuita.org/wii/index-e.html

Using the wiimote to play fps games is certainly a thought others have had:

It would be really awesome if you could refine the Duck Hunt aiming system and combine it with head tracking, instead of actually using the WiiMote to point and shoot. 'Cause at least on Duck Hunt you had something that looked like a gun that was relatively accurate.

Sorry to revive this a bit, but it's only been nine days and I have an on-topic question (If this thread even really has a topic anymore). I got my bluetooth adapter today, so I'm trying out connecting the wiimote to my computer. I told the bluetooth adapter to find new software, then pressed the red button on the back of my wiimote, and it found the device shown in the picture. However, as you can see, WiinRemote doesn't recognize it, leading me to believe I did something wrong. Does anyone know what to do?

Did you download a bluetooth stack? I think I used one called Soleil.
Title: Re: I merged these two shitty threads together
Post by: LittleKey on 09 Feb 2010, 17:28
Oh yeah, I forgot the stack! I think you're talking about BlueSoleil; I downloaded it and now I have this instead of the plain bluetooth menu in the first picture. I right click on the joystick icon and choose "Connect Bluetooth Human Interface Device" and then press the red button on the wiimote. It makes a connection and WiinRemote shows activity, but it disconnects once the signal caused by the red button stops transmitting. Do you know how I can make it stay connected? It seems to be working otherwise.
