Title: PAX 2010 via Bawwwston
Post by: KvP on 21 Jan 2010, 16:38
March 26-28. Who's going?

I'm pretty sure I am. Gots my badge paid for and everything. Even got some SECRET PLANS.

Maybe we can arrange some sort of... meeting.

Assuming I'm employed, Kat and I are definitely going. Do we have any specifics on who is doing what for accommodations at this point?

It is OFFICIAL. I got my badge, my friends booked a room, I am GOING.

But do I want to rock a costume or just stick with nerdy shirts? I mean, I've got nerdy (http://www.threadless.com/product/963/Amazon_Addiction) shirts (http://www.threadless.com/product/543/This_Is_Not_a_Pipe), that's easy (and I could totally make a Pikachu or Totoro hat too), but it's a question of how nerdy I should be. Like, I could totally dress up as one of my D&D or WoW characters, carry my stats around, and rock it. Decisions decisions.

If I go I'll be flying out on the 25th and flying back on the 29th. I'd just need some kind soul to put me up.

I'm toilet trained and I don't bite too much anymore, and if I can figure out customs I might bring some chilis from home and cook some chili for everyone?

$50 for all three days or $30 per day. If you are actually going to go, you should buy your ticket ASAP, because they're almost sold out, according to their website.

Also they need to post the schedule! I WANTS TO SEE WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPENNNN. Also I am interested to see what music acts they get.

Sounds like a good idea... I don't know if I'll be able to do it, I'm pretty sure I have at least one exam the next day and I want to be absolutely sure I am in Colorado that day. That having been said I can probably leave by like midnight and the 2 hour time rollback will give me time to sleep.

How easy is it to smuggle an 18 year old into a bar in America again?
Title: Re: PAX 2010 via Bawwwston
Post by: scarred on 02 Mar 2010, 14:28
Depends on the city. Chicago never cards, and Seattle cards like a fiend. Not sure about Boston, ask a native.
Title: Re: PAX 2010 via Bawwwston
Post by: KvP on 02 Mar 2010, 15:37
Around here it depends on what's going on - if it's normal bar stuff, nobody cards at the door (can't drink inside, though). If there's a show or the like, there's a guy making sure nobody under 21 even gets in.
Title: Re: PAX 2010 via Bawwwston
Post by: Lines on 02 Mar 2010, 18:04
Or if they card at the door they may just put an X on your hand to tell the bartender you're underaged. But yeah, you should be able to get in. Most places, around here anyways, allow people that are 18+, but you most likely will not be able to drink.
Title: Re: PAX 2010 via Bawwwston
Post by: pen on 03 Mar 2010, 05:31
Most bars in boston do not allow anyone under 21 in.  Some do, so it's really hit or miss.  I get carded pretty consistently, though.
Title: Re: PAX 2010 via Bawwwston
Post by: valley_parade on 03 Mar 2010, 09:44
Yeah, it's funny. I don't get carded anywhere in town anymore. Boston though? All the time.
Title: Re: PAX 2010 via Bawwwston
Post by: Ballard on 03 Mar 2010, 17:38
Boston is the only place in the United States I've ever been carded (for 18+ things).

I went into Leavitt & Pierce in Harvard Square, picked up an expensive wooden pipe, a pack of pipe cleaners, a tool, and two ounces of Black and Gold tobacco. At the counter the guy sold me everything but the tobacco and said, "Sorry man, the state of Massachusetts means business."

I have had numerous similar experiences there. It's a state rooted in Puritanism.
Title: Re: PAX 2010 via Bawwwston
Post by: Barmymoo on 03 Mar 2010, 17:56
In the UK you can't even sell papers to under 18s, I don't think you'd be able to sell pipes either.
Title: Re: PAX 2010 via Bawwwston
Post by: Lines on 03 Mar 2010, 18:23
Boston is one straight laced place I guess. Hmm. How about pubs? Do they card (like some places round here) for any establishment that serves alcohol or just actual bars?

Yeah it's like a 15 minute bus trip to Sullivan Square. Also I'm liking that there seems to be some shopping centres around me. America is usually great to buy cheap clothes, so I can sort my wardrobe out for the next year or so whilst I'm there.

Post by: ackblom12 on 15 Mar 2010, 09:28
Me, Kat and Shane will be showing up sometime late afternoon Friday. Do we have any plans for the weekend yet outside of Sunday night and PAX stuff?

Also, since we're all kinds of scattered in the city we should probably all exchange numbers if we want to coordinate much.
Title: Re: PAX 2010 via Bawwwston
Post by: Lines on 15 Mar 2010, 16:40
I think I may have yours and I have Shane's.

I don't know exactly when I'm arriving Thursday night (we're leaving super freaking early Thurs morning and it's about a 14 hour drive), but as for plans, I don't really have any. I know the guys I'm going with want to tour the Sam Adams brewery, which will be on Friday or Saturday, but other than that, I have no idea. Most of the things I want to do appear to be on Friday or the first half of Saturday, so yeah. I'll probably just be following my friends around, so let me know if you want to organize a meal or whatever together.

Otherwise I will see you guys around or text you to see where you're hanging around so I can stalk you. I am totally up with having breakfast/lunch/dinner at least once with all of you. Just let me know when is the most convenient and doesn't interfere with any panels you really want to see.
Title: Re: PAX 2010 via Bawwwston
Post by: KvP on 18 Mar 2010, 16:27
Man, there's a panel I want to attend on Sunday that is literally 4 hours before I have to leave. Otherwise this is really the one I want to see, because I internet know some of these guys:

Quote
But Thou Must: Choice in Games
Naga Theatre
Saturday, 8:30pm

Role-playing games need choice to propel the plot and motivate the player. The methods can vary from smoke and mirrors to extreme branching reactivity - what is the right balance to strike in a game? This panel dissects SEGA and Obsidian's Alpha Protocol, the issues involved with introducing choice into a real-world spy genre, and presenting the consequence to the player - along with the consequences it had for the development team.
Panelists Include: Joseph Bulock [Cinematics Designer, Obsidian Entertainment], Shon Stewart [Lead Cinematics Animator, Obsidian Entertainment], Matt MacLean [Lead Systems Designer, Obsidian Entertainment], Chris Avellone [Lead Designer, Obsidian Entertainment]

Other than that, I'm waiting to hear on a private pass to a Sega event, but beyond that I'm up for whatever. Who all is actually going to PAX?

I have been invited to a private demo of Alpha Protocol (http://www.gametrailers.com/video/a-man-alpha-protocol/62331) next Saturday March 27th at 3 PM, at the Sheraton hotel (39 Dalton St), which is just outside the Hynes convention center.

I can bring one person with me. Seeing as how it's not actually on Con grounds, you probably won't even need a pass. Anybody up for it? Steve? Kat? Anybody?

Heh, so basically I have those two things on Saturday - the Alpha Protocol demo and the Obsidian panel. My Friday Night, early Saturday and Sunday are all free for non-PAXy stuff. But I'll probably be antsy about getting to that demo on time. I take it you're coming with, Steve? Also does anybody want to go to the Obsidz panel with me at 8:30? Steve? Linds?
Title: Re: PAX 2010 via Bawwwston

Saturday, if I'm not going to Jon's, I was going to the classic arcade panel and then heading over to the concert.

Looks like most of the things I want to see are on Friday, Saturday until about 3 and then after 8, and the closing ceremony on Sunday. I want to go shopping at some point because I have 3 friends who have birthdays this week/next week, so I'm going to go looking for some funky stuff. Any ideas? I know Newbury St has some places (and I'm definitely going to Newbury Comics and Johnny Cupcakes) and I know my friends and I are going to go eat at Cheers and I remember there being shops up there.

Once I find out when we're going (maybe Sunday for lunch), anyone want to come eat at Cheers?
Title: Re: PAX 2010 via Bawwwston
Post by: ackblom12 on 20 Mar 2010, 08:22
Yeah, the Obsidian panel will be determined by whether or not we are doing anything at Jon's that night and how lenient they are with people using each other's passes, since Shane has offered his up if need be.
Title: Re: PAX 2010 via Bawwwston
Post by: KvP on 20 Mar 2010, 11:49
The passes don't have names on them or any sort of recognizable identification (barcode, etc.) on them, so I don't think it will be an issue.

I want to go shopping at some point

I know me and Shane are looking to spend some dollars too.

Ryan, I know you won't be at PAX on Saturday, do you (and Steve & Kat, and anyone else without a Saturday pass) want to just hang out in the afternoon? I was planning on hitting up the Phoenix Landing in Cambridge for lunch, and to watch the Man United - Bolton game. Their soccer brunch menu has some great stuff. And maybe try and give you guys a tour of the city(ies) afterward?

I think Allison PMed you my number, just let me know.

Man I'm up to do anything, really. My main goal of going to Boston is to chill out and get some gnatty photographs if I can.

Also to cook chili.

Re: seafood.... The Oceanaire Room is amazing, but you'd be looking at $20-40 for an entree.  Way better than Legal Seafood though, is the general opinion around here.

Hey boissss,

There's another panel I'm interested in attending, but it's pretty early (11:30 AM) on Saturday and it's likely to be a popular one.

I'm thinking (and maybe it's just me being paranoid) that we should get to panels like, at least 30 minutes prior to their start time. Ensure seats and the like.

Oh yeah the public transport is rad. $5 it cost me to get to my hostel. And now I am spending the night with an autistic and an Argentinian and they are both great.

Also also pub somewhere near you guys because it is closer to water that has fish and chips sometime around 1pm. Yay or nay? Otherwise that steakhouse is cool around 1pm. (We're picking up last minute items from PAX and then will head out.)

Plus the place is so goddamned kinda authentic Irish that there are pictures of old hurling teams all over the walls.

I was glad too see you guys for lunch! And holy crap, those fish and chips were good. We were talking to the guy who made the food and he was pretty rad, too.

Also, I bought stuff from Paul and Storm today and when I told them that I wanted 2 shirts as well as one of their cd's, I became one of their new favorite people. They are cool guys. I would see them and Coulton again in a heartbeat.

My phone's run out of credit and it seems like my bank has stopped my debit card because they're worried it's been frauded in Amurka. I need my customer number to restart it, but I don't have a bank statement on me to tell them it. This shouldn't really be happening anyway, because I told them I would be going to Boston and they "left a note" on my card details saying so. Luckily I still have paper money left.
