Guys I am going to be in NYC on July 18th for at least a week, maybe more like 10 days or even a fortnight (we have free accomodation so it's not much trouble to stretch it). Maybe keep that in mind?

Oh poo, I was really hoping to try and go to this but I am pretty sure I won't be able to afford it at all, what with wanting to pay off my debt to my mum as quickly as possible and now paying more rent and going overseas being really expensive.

:( Maybe some other time.

Fucking Custom Muppets (http://techmoan.com/2009/02/26/the-muppet-whatnot-workshop-experience/)

Something about the gaping mouths and staring, dead eyes of those muppets in the last photo makes me think of Real Dolls and that's just not a crossover I ever wanted to imagine.
Title: Re: That NYC Thang
Post by: Lunchbox on 15 Mar 2010, 22:47
Yeah only the blue face looks like even a semblance of a smile. Also for 'custom' muppets there really don't look to be that many options for everything, except noses, which is the thing you really need to customise least.

I apparently have a free ticket to NYC. Don't know how true this statement is. I'm also not sure whether it involves a ticket back.

I will look into this statement.

Actually guys, there is a slender possibility that I might maybe possibly be able to do this thang, but only if I find a job in the vicinity and come hang for a while. Ain't makin no promises but I'm looking at America as a job option for summer.

Title: Re: That NYC Thang
Post by: Ptommydski on 16 Mar 2010, 13:38
No, I just have other commitments which will prevent me from attending this one. Location is more or less irrelevant.

I said a while ago that I basically the ideal situation as far as I'm concerned is that there are sporadic meet-ups with a smaller attendance if and when people can make it. Since I said that, it's naturally turned out exactly like that. There have been good meet-ups (again) in Boston, Sydney, Toronto, Glasgow etc. I think it's cool how people can now fit these things around their life realistically rather than feeling like there will be one big thing each year.
Title: Re: That NYC Thang
Post by: calenlass on 16 Mar 2010, 15:56

Well, I kind of like the one-big-thing a year now, because I cannot go fly and hang out with people any ol' place willy-nilly anymore.

Such events don't rule out the possibility of having smaller meet ups either. I mean, realistically, if I were to ever attend one I'd really, REALLY want to plan around it because frankly that's the way I feel comfortable doing things. I have found through experience that I prefer to be pretty ambitious when I do travel, so just winging it with whatever resources I have available takes a lot of the interest out of it for me. The last time I did seat of the pants traveling ended up prominently featuring NYC, drunken friends whom I ended up subsidizing, a knife and a shitty hostel with glass on the floor from a broken crack pipe. Makes for a decent story but the trip itself was pretty bleh.

It's cause my dad and mom used to work in New York and I got a free ticket every year or so from their work to go and visit them, and apparently I haven't cashed in on one of them. I think I also have to use it before a certain date.

Title: Re: That NYC Thang
Post by: Boro_Bandito on 17 Mar 2010, 07:52
I definitely see the pros and cons to both kinds, but in the long run I'm from Maryland, and none of the Maryland people here ever have a meetup. Also with school and money the way they are being able to focus on the large meets just takes a lot of headache away for me personally.

Also Sean, we can carpool dawg.
Title: Re: That NYC Thang
Post by: ackblom12 on 17 Mar 2010, 07:56
I will not deny that I enjoy both. I get to see folks I will never get to see any other way at the bigguns which is a huge bonus, but I am more comfortable socially with the smaller meetups.

I think it's a little silly to eleminate either possibility honestly.
Title: Re: That NYC Thang
Post by: Jimmy the Squid on 17 Mar 2010, 08:48
The smaller ones are easy sometimes, especially the Sydney ones because hell, Hannah and I meet up all the time and I run into Ben occasionally and Lunchy and Nick basically live around the corner from me. I would still like the occasional big ones to go ahead because honestly, when I was in Boston meeting everyone and when Dovey and Brett Slurms stayed at my place it was easily some of the best times I've ever had and I would like to hopefully go to whatever 2011 meetup is happening because the girl and I will be in America probably around August/September. I know that's probably outside of the usual meetup time but if anyone wants to meet up then it would be cool.

Basically don't stop thinking about tomorrow doing the big meet ups. They are awesome.

Yeah, that's exactly what I was saying.

Some other folks will be going to Chicago again in June so it's going to be polarising in terms of attendance. Basically, it's better to let people do what they want rather than attempting to cram everyone into one location. Maybe next year we can try to have a bigger con again, personally I thought Tronno and Chicago were awesome.

For what it's worth I will also be visiting Boston and Tronno (and other eastern cities as well, I just know those two to have concentrations of forum-types) in between NYC and ATP (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,24357.0.html) in September, so there is plenty of chances for folks to get blown hang out.

Some other folks will be going to Chicago again in June

This includes me, BUT it's at least in part because my bassist and I both post on Electrical and we're gonna take the opportunity to roadtrip & Band-Bond. It's something I haven't really done since the first These Estates lineup and since I seem to get on really well with the other two dudes currently in the band I think roadtrippin to Chicago is a good idea.

So that's why I'm not going to NYC. DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT WAS TO CHOOSE BETWEEN THAT AND PIZZA AT DI FARA????

Also I am hoping to go to NYC, it depends on how much of a tax return I get this year. Plane tickets are $200, housing should hopefully be around $100 again, so if I get $350+ I will hopefully be there.

Post by: ackblom12 on 22 Mar 2010, 11:13
Alright, we really should look at accomodations. Kat and I will be taking a look over the next few days. We were considering the possibility of doing like we did in Chicago and renting an apartment for the weekend, but with our turnout this year being cut in half at the least, the $1600 for that (If we can find it again) is not gonna be manageable I think.

If any natives have any suggestions for cheapish hotels for NYC we'd be grateful since we need to get these reserved sometime soon. Thus far, this is a decent list we've found.

Hotel listing (http://gonyc.about.com/od/hotels/tp/topcheaphotel.htm). No. 3, the Cosmopolitan, is what I was looking at sepcifically, but several of them seem to have some decent prices for NYC.

Whatever you do, do NOT stay at the Chelsea Spot Hostel

I mean, unless you want to experience

- long, black hairs and stains on your sheets
- plastic mattresses and inflatable pillows in rickety bunk beds especially designed for discomfort
- staff that talks loudly throughout the entire night right outside your dorm and then hits on you when you complain the next day
- seeing rats
- having everything you at some point used also be broken at some point. This includes: Toilets, showers, hot water/heating in general (I guess the air con breaks during summer or something), floor (!), coffee maker, computers, wifi
- scary neurotic roommates that keeps you up all night polishing their shoes in bed

Oh, and we later found out it's run semi-illegally somehow. It was cheap though.

Title: Re: That NYC Thang
Post by: 20 jazz funk greats on 22 Mar 2010, 18:26
mine is $1000 for both nyc con and chicago con. i can plausibly do both if they're far enough apart and i'm only in school/working part-time. i just won't, most likely. i am probably going to the con with less people and i'm not going to carpool with anyone cause i get a bit claustrophobic at times.

just a note for those of you who want to meet me for some crazy reason.

I mean for just accommodations, if people can somehow calculate that. It would make it a lot easier to search for housing.
Title: Re: That NYC Thang
Post by: ackblom12 on 22 Mar 2010, 20:19
Low enough that after we cram as many people as possible into it it turns into less than $200 a person for 3 nights. if we can get as low as $100 - $150 that's be fantastic.

Seems unlikely, but hey.

mine is just accommodations for both cons, if that helps any. (i wanna stay at a moderately nice place, anyone else up for that?)

Stephen, I've been told very good things about L Hostels (http://www.l-hostels.com/) and based on what I saw on their site, it's in a nice area not far from the action and looks pretty snazzy. I'll be fucked if I can get a rate quote out of them online, particularly so far in advance and for a large group.

Try calling them and inquiring about group booking and you might have some luck.

I'm also looking at apartment rentals for the weekend. My friend does that to throw parties all the time so she might be able to giveme advice on how to get a cheap one. How many bedrooms do you think we could get away with?
Title: Re: That NYC Thang

Just one bedroom. We can all sleep together. Like in a commune.

Nonsense we got three in a bed in Chicago with plenty of room between each of us (then again one of us was Jodie and she is basically the size of half a person and Katie and I aren't really size-comparable to fully-grown guys so possibly not).

Post by: Boro_Bandito on 23 Mar 2010, 16:16
I'm not averse to bringing an air mattress or a cot or just a good ol' fashioned sleeping bag (I have all three) so it really isn't an issue for me how many beds there are as long as I get floor space. If we're staying in a hostel L looks better than a bunch of others, but it also looks like its going to cost a greater amount more than normal.
Title: Re: That NYC Thang
Post by: ackblom12 on 23 Mar 2010, 17:10
I will not deny that I'm not too keen on staying in a hostel. I'd like to have a small bit of privacy (you guys don't count) and I'd also appreciate a non dry location to sleep at.

I am; however, all for cramming a dangerous number of people into a hotel room or (hopefully) still renting an apartment for the weekend.

Maybe eastern Canadian folks would like to try for another mini get together sometime from September onwards?

doughvee not dovey

I am not sure that I am interested in every meeting david dovey now. The magic has run out of him.

Fun Fact: When I sing The Weight by The Band, I replace "Take a load off Fannie" with "Take a load off dovey" and imagine Dovey taking a load off and that is good but in fact he is not dovey he is doughvee and this changes everything.

Other people, they can apply on an individual basis but really the odds of me caring are not so good.

Well shit I'm still going as far as I know. I've found a new steady enough part time job for the summer, and my last summer class ends way earlier than I thought, so I won't be in school and I've got plenty of time to save money, since one of the virtues of having not left the nest yet is that I don't have to pay rent and so all that is pretty much disposable income.

I have found a 3 bedroom apartment we could rent for 360 a night with a $100 cleaning fee. It has a sofa bed as well so we could sleep 8 in beds and the rest on a floor. We have 8 confirmed which would make it 147 each plus tax, to be decreased if more people come. I know very little about NYC as far as where we do and don't want to be. It is here abouts http://www.facebook.com/l/a4cdd;tinyurl.com/2w9l6uk A 5 min walk to a subway station. Is this ok with everyone?

Sorry about the lack of updates. We've broken down and are looking into hotels (we're trying to get multiple rooms on a single floor, connected if possible) in the area now. A few dozen requests for apartments either met with silence or a notice that it was taken for the weekend. One we got a response from was a Nigerian phishing scam.

But yeah, this weekend we are going to be getting some info on what's being finalized. I think Kat is planning on sending out a Facebook message today to folks for some more detailed info on how much everyone is willing to spend on hotel rooms.

Shit the closer this get it seems the less I'm able to save. I'm really on the wire right now. Luckily Bus rides are cheap and New York only costs about 36 bucks round trip, but on top of 200 bucks for a room, more for food and with a little extra money for emergencies and possible fun times I'm going to need to save a solid 500, and right now I'm sitting at around 130. Basically if I don't spend anything at all beyond gas and necessities from my next two paychecks and borrow like 50 bucks from my dad I can go. I don't know how likely borrowing money from my dad would be.

It's a pretty sure thing.

Frank Turner is very high up on my list of Dudes To See (especially cos he played in Perth in May and I did not go because I couldn't afford it/didn't care about any of the other dudes playing) so it works out quite nicely, especially if there is a prospect of another collection of QC people being there. I was originally planning on going up along the East Coast and then heading back down past Tronno on my way to ATP Fest in the Catskill Mountains but there is absolutely no reason why I can't do that in the opposite direction with Buffalo straight after NYCon (such as it is) followed by Niagara Falls and Tronno

Quick note about the Canadian vs American side of Niagra falls, US side is like a state park where you can walk down and stuff and generally isn't very developed, Canadian side is kinda like Disneyland, Maids of the Mist ride out of there, etc. Either way you won't need the day unless you're gonna do the other stuff around the area, like I think there's a gorge you can ride a thing across and whatnot.
