Title: A very great question of burning importance
Post by: Inlander on 24 Mar 2010, 22:26
Sometimes, in my remorseless reach for Orwellian omnipotence, I find myself clicking on the "Who's online" button at the bottom of the forum's main page. This takes me to a page that tells me straight away who's currently reading the forum, and what they're doing. In my occasional wandering into this dank netherworld I've had occasion to observe some frankly baffling and yet curiously widespread behaviour, and it has led me to ask the following question:

Why on earth would anybody want to print a thread on an online forum?

Any information and speculation leading to an answer to this question, however spurious, would appreciated with a fervent gratitude matched in its immensity only by the corresponding smallness of any reward I might be willing to offer.

Someone is printing pictures of you for masturbation material, Harry.

Face the truth.

Either that or they want something to do when they take a shit. For example, back in college there was this one lanky dude who became notorious for printing out a whole bunch of articles and basically fumigating the caf restroom. It was kinda vile.

I click on the "Who's online" button as well sometimes when I'm bored, and what I've noticed is that among the "viewing the board index", "posting in the topic _" and such, sometimes it says "nothing, or nothing you can see..." What the hell are you guys doing?

Are they mods? Mods have their own "secret" forum that only they can see where they basically bitch about the rest of us.

No, it's pretty much everyone, even guests. It's weird!

Whatever it is they're doing, it's probably for the best that we can't see it.

Also, I live in perpetual fear of clicking "Who's Online" and seeing someone else listed as "Viewing Who's Online." It's my secret sneaky pass-time! I don't want to get caught out!

Well, too late for that now, I guess.

If only there was a "Who's Masturbating to the Photo Thread" button
Title: Re: A very great question of burning importance
Post by: Inlander on 25 Mar 2010, 07:01
I think it's assumed that that's the default position. It's more notable for the forum software to catalogue when anyone's not masturbating to the photo thread.

Other fun button stuff: I don't know if it's the same for you plebs, but in the top row of buttons on my screen, wedged between the "Search" and the "Profile" buttons, I have a button called "Admin". I have never touched it; I fear that at best, clicking on it frivolously could lead to a warning or a fine or even jail time as when somebody is caught making prank calls to the emergency services; at worst it could mobilise the forum Admins to declare war on some rival internet forum. And we all know where that kind of behaviour leads. (Well, except the people who've only joined in the last couple of years.)

Of course I also have access to all sorts of other fun buttons but I can't tell you about them. They're secret.

There is a bug. It is inside your mouse. It is running as fast as it can to try to get out of this thing it is trapped in, but all it is succeeding in doing running in circles and confusing the optical sensors a bit, so that your cursor clicks on the wrong spot.

I just realised, that if you use this feature to see what people are doing, I'm almost always "posting in...".

I think there's more posts that I don't make.

No, but you can print the HexCode of all the uploaded music files, then in 50 years when all of the digital formats of today are obsolete and nothing can read our primitive "discs", it will be simple to OCR the stack of papers to extract and convert the information to holographic storage and transform into sound waves once again.

Adobe Audition can output an audio file as an image.  The idea is that you can edit it in Photoshop and re-import it to get new (aka weird) effects.  You could, of course, print the image.

Oh, I get it. it's seventy-four pages long, so if you want to read the entire thing in one go, or search for something particular, you get the entire thread in one single page. Mystery solved! Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go print out the Pointless Thread.
