I'm in Spain for a conference. I was supposed to fly back this morning, but because of the volcanic eruption in Iceland all flights were canceled. Now the soonest I can go home is Friday. doh
Is this causing problems for anyone else?
-
I live about a two hour drive from the volcano. It has not affected me in any direct way yet, but with a simple change in wind direction it might blow ash over my home, which would kind of suck.
Also I am sorry for my country being sort of a dick these days.
-
I've so far met two people who are possibly not going on planned holidays depending on how things hold up - haven't checked the news recently so I don't know how much longer flights are being delayed. One of my friends was supposed to be going to Corfu so that would definitely be out.
I don't fly and hadn't had anything planned so I'm otherwise clear. It's a bit weird looking up at the sky and seeing no sign of planes, though... also yesterday it was a really clear, sunny day, and you could see a sort of greyish haze in the air along the horizon, like a far-off raincloud, only with completely the wrong sort of appearance, if that makes sense. There's also been a fine layer of dirt on everything each morning.
-
My dad is in Cameroon at the moment, scheduled to fly to Paris and then Munich tomorrow or something. He might just come home via Joburg instead.
I also have two friends who were to fly home out of Paris this weekend. One of them is back in Perth and the other is not.
-
A good friend of mine was trapped in Italy and decided to take the opportunity to visit another friend of hers in Montenegro, since Italy wasn't affected at that point, but Norway was.
Oh, and my aunt, uncle and cousin couldn't fly down to Oslo for my grandmother's 80's birthday party, which kind of sucked since I haven't seen them in forever.

i didn't even know a volcano errupted until yesterday. apparently some icelandic musician was gonna play in shepherdstown but can't now, but i didn't know that till yesterday too/
-
My aunt is stuck in britain for a few days.
-
For some reason the bit that bothers me most about it is the fact that Frightened Rabbit got stranded here in the UK and thus missed their Coachella slot.
These guys however, know how to turn it into a profit (http://www.volcanotaxi.com/).
-
My son is having to drive 1000km from Germany to the UK to give a concert this week - at least he got in quick enough to grab a Eurotunnel booking.
I hope it's all clear by 6th May when I'm due to fly to New York for a holiday (also to go to my son's concert in the Carnegie Hall on the 11th).
-
A meeting I put a lot of work into getting ready for may not happen because the people we are supposed to meet with can't get to the US from Europe. Doesn't really hurt me any, but still annoying because of all the extra effort I've expended.
-

There are worse places to be stuck certainly, but stuck is still stuck. Also, I have work in the Intermedia Festival (http://music.iupui.edu/intermedia/installation-artists/) next weekend, and this obviously puts a huge crimp in that.

My dad is on an oil-rig off of Shetland. He was meant to be home Thursday and now he reckons the earliest we could see him is Tuesday or Wednesday.
My brother was meant to be going to Mexico for two weeks last Thursday to act as best man at his mates wedding. They've had to re-book the whole thing for August.
My girlfriend was meant to fly up and see me last Thursday also. By the time she could make alternative arrangements everything was sold out/way too expensive.
Seriously, the one fucking Thursday three people close to me need to fly somewhere.
-
I doubt any football matches in Norway have been postponed due to volcanic eruptions before now, and I still find it a little bit funny to say.
But it's weird to see how people are acting now that they're basically forced to find other transportation or solutions. It's not like there's a strike and people can go "Fuck the strike and the airline companies, I want to fly, waaahwaaahwaaah!", but there are newspapers that are organizing things where people who need a lift to go somewhere or people who are going somewhere and can offer a lift can put in an ad. Our prime minister just tweeted his way through Europe after having flown from New York to Madrid to Basel and then found a car, and answered tons of questions from followers, which he has never done to this degree before. While the whole thing obviously a huge hassle for a lot of people, I'm surprised at how reasonable and/or positive most of them seem. Now, is the media coverage ridiculous? Yes. But that happens basically every time something out of the ordinary that affects a lot of people occurs.

I had never considered the possibility that a volcano that far away would have any impact on my life, but a friend taking a PhD in geology informs me that if Yellowstone decides to erupt, we're all going to die. Scary prospect.
More immediately, a bunch of my friends have had their exam rescheduled from tomorrow because it is a languages exam, and upwards of 1/5 of the candidates are stuck in foreign countries, ironically, preparing for their exams. Also at least two members of my ice hockey team only made Nationals because of the volcano, in one way or another.
It's so weird, it is the first time we've had anything big happen in my lifetime without anyone to blame.
-
Still, I bet you're getting some kick-arse sunsets in the northern hemisphere right now.
-
Nope. Utterly normal. Sorry.
A niece of my girlfriend has seen her holiday go up in smoke. My girlfriend's mother is supposed to fly to the US this wednesday and we're waiting to see if she can.
It's vital that she does since I want a Patriots hoody and some football related baby clothes for my kid.
-
Bah! That's lame. Last time a volcano went up in Asia we had awesome sunsets for months.
I also don't recall there being all this drama about cancelled flights back then. Maybe our Asia-Pacific volcanoes are just better than your European ones.
-
I thought volcanoes in asia were just copies of european ones only smaller, cheaper and slightly more efficient?
-
Still, I bet you're getting some kick-arse sunsets in the northern hemisphere right now.

Extra! Extra! Icelandic volcano causes major airline disruptions and puts a generation of metal album artists out of work!
-
My favorite picture is still one that was taken with that kind of pre-twilight darkness and blueness about the air with the smoldering orange volcano pumping away. That just appeals to me on a couple of different levels.

How to pronounce (and not pronounce) that Volcano

My grandfather was supposed to come visit from St. Petersburg four days after my birthday, on the 22nd of April, for the first time in nearly a decade.
And now he's cancelled his trip because of the volcano.
I hope it's all clear by 6th May when I'm due to fly to New York for a holiday (also to go to my son's concert in the Carnegie Hall on the 11th).
Would you like to hang with the interwebs here?
-
So are you not gonna get that watch?
-
My aunts were going for a trip to... Warsaw? What's the deal with you English giving stuff weird names? Munich? Warsaw? Geeez.
Anyways, they were going, but now they're not, so we'll probably just end up celebrating my dad's birthday instead. So woohoo! But airlines all over Europe are about to go down, and some places on Iceland has to be evacuated, so this is a big deal.
-
The only way it has affected me somewhat, is that i was at one of the environmental agencies that monitors air quality, and asked if they decided to take this chance to see which percentage of fine dust comes from the airplanes. (They have measuring points on the ground, including nearby airports. Lower levels of fine dust at this moment -> the percentage that planes contribute!)
It was a fun discussion :)
-

Yeah I read about that in Bill Bryson's book A Short History of Nearly Everything. If it's any consolation, you would live longer than I would (unless I suppose it blew right now while I'm far away.)
-
We have family friends from England staying at our house, they had to postpone returning to England. I get to sleep on the couch for another week or so.

Damn my continent and it's low level of tectonic activity. Nothing exciting ever happens here.
-
Looking at those pictures I have decided Eyjafjallajökull is pretty metal. It should form a band.

While stuck is still stuck, increasingly I'm feeling like I'm trapped in a James Bond movie, which is pretty cool. I mean, the weather's great, I'm down the street from the Guggenheim, and the other conference people still trapped in the hotel with me include an American, a Greek fellow who lives in England, and a young woman who is double-sexy because she's from Belgium.
-
This time tomorrow, we'll all be trying to guess who is the murderer and you'll have sprouted a tiny beard and a trilby.
-
My Dad and step-Mum are in Europe at the moment. They were going to fly from London to Budapest but instead they are taking a train to Belgium. They never really explained this train of reasoning.
-
who is double-sexy because she's from Belgium.
Joe you really need to get out and see the world more.
-
http://eldgos.mila.is/eyjafjallajokull-fra-thorolfsfelli/ (http://eldgos.mila.is/eyjafjallajokull-fra-thorolfsfelli/)
you can watch it live here, although it´s not as spectacular at the moment as it has been for the past few days
-
My aunts were going for a trip to... Warsaw? What's the deal with you English giving stuff weird names? Munich? Warsaw? Geeez.
At least those are only two syllables.
-
Joe you really need to get out and see the world more.
I should clarify, I didn't mean Belgium specifically is sexy, I meant she's European and speaks with an accent. Double-sexy as in she looks attractive, and then sounds attractive too because of the accent.
Also, people who've already left include a Portugese guy, a Brazilian woman, a German dude who lives in Finland, and an Australian guy who lives in Austria. um what else... There was a Candian dude, an Italian, an Englishman, several other Americans... this was a very international conference. And those were just the presenters; most of the attendees were Spanish, and then unexpectedly a group of Danish students.
-
It smelled like grilling for the whole sunday. That made me hungry. I was not affected otherwise.
Warsaw? Geeez.
Warsaw is a rad name. War-saw.
War.
Saw.
-
My Dad and step-Mum are in Europe at the moment. They were going to fly from London to Budapest but instead they are taking a train to Belgium. They never really explained this train of reasoning.
The Eurostar train service runs from London to mainland Europe on 2 routes; London - Paris and London - Brussels. They have done well to get tickets because it is supposedly fully booked for days.
From Brussels they can get trains all over mainland Europe, there is likely an international service that runs to Budapest directly from Brussels.
-
Plus, if their plan is to try to get to Budapest using the InterRail, going to Brussels instead of Paris makes a lot more sense as there were (are?) rail strikes happening in France - what shitty timing! So yeah, sounds like your Dad did pretty well, Jimmy.
I was in France until Sunday - we were worried we might not get back easily, but we were travelling by car and were already booked on to a Eurotunnel crossing. Despite the huge increase in demand, they managed to run things smoothly, and we weren't delayed at all.
-
My aunts were going for a trip to... Warsaw? What's the deal with you English giving stuff weird names? Munich? Warsaw? Geeez.
At least those are only two syllables.
When I think about it, it must be because you are unable to pronounce the "ch" in Warszawa or München.
The ash has made the newspaper go nuts trying to best each other into making new words. To be "Ashstuck" is now a thing. There was even a far fetched word play on a air plane-stimuli and Cinderella, I'll not go into details. I guess they'll do anything for a good headline, right?
-
A whole bunch of people I was going to visit are stuck in Holland having been to Roadburn. One of my friends is stuck in Tokyo, expensive. Another in NY, I have friends stuck all over the world. BAH!
-

The worst part is that Sylfest Lomheim has actually praised the word (http://"http://www.dagbladet.no/2010/04/19/nyheter/innenriks/aske/vulkan/sprakradet/11345115/"). Argh. It sounds so fucking dumb, even though it does, well, describe the situation.

Extremely large volcanic eruptions, which eject gases and material high into the atmosphere, can trigger lightning. This phenomenon was documented by Pliny The Elder during the AD79 eruption of Vesuvius, in which he perished. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcanic_lightning#Volcanically_triggered)
-
My god! It's full of lightning!
-
I'm finally affected by the volcano after failing to put 2 and 2 together until getting an email.
2 (all flights out of Europe are grounded for a while) + 2 (my professor went to give a talk at Liverpool) = 4 ("Our class is getting ruled by a volcano")
-
an Australian guy who lives in Austria
God-dammit! We've worked so hard for so long to stop people getting confused about Australia/Austria and now we're gonna have to start all over again. Thanks a lot, guy.
-
If it makes you feel any better I've never made that mistake.
-
Finally involved: my airport is closing down some flights
-
If it makes you feel any better I've never made that mistake.
Are you sure? Maybe you just think you've never made that mistake.
-
Yes I am sure.
-
Not gonna lie when I was a kid I never knew whether Aussies were Australians or Austrians.
-
Neither did I.
-
They have very different accents you know.
-
After finding out at the weekend that Powderfinger were supposed to be playing Manchester in a couple weeks, I was pretty gutted I wouldn't have chance to see them since I'm completely broke - but then they announced they've postponed all the UK dates because of the volcano! Now I can go!
Cheers, volcano!
-
Maybe they've postponed them till AFTER THEY'VE BROKEN UP.
-
Yo momma so fat, she's affected by the volcanic eruption in Iceland.
-
Not gonna lie when I was a kid I never knew whether Aussies were Australians or Austrians.
What confuses me even more, in German Aussis=Austrians and Ossis=East Germans.
-
Maybe they've postponed them till AFTER THEY'VE BROKEN UP.

Why would you say?

Because Powderfinger are a piece of shit.

Okay everyone calm down and rock out to Neil Young.

(For the record I do think that Bernard Fanning has a genuinely great rock voice, but he's tied it to genuinely mediocre rock music lately. I really liked some of their songs from three or four albums back, though, like the one that was on the Two Hands soundtrack.)
-
This is pretty cool.

If you click on Horfa you can see a video from the eruption, you can actualy see the shockwaves coming from the explosions.

Would you like to hang with the interwebs here?
I am taking my wife for a break before she starts a new (and stressful, but I won't go into that) job. I doubt I can fit the interwebs in without seriously dischuffing her, sadly. Of course, if the interwebs fancy being around for a concert (http://www.carnegiehall.org/article/box_office/events/evt_13212.html?selecteddate=05112010) that I'll be at...
-
Also, people who've already left include a Portugese guy, a Brazilian woman, a German dude who lives in Finland, and an Australian guy who lives in Austria. um what else... There was a Candian dude, an Italian, an Englishman, several other Americans...
So Candy Land IS a real land! Man, and I thought it was just a board game. Who's up for a forumite meet-up in Candy Land?
-
Oh I have a friend and his wife who were supposed to return from a 7 month trip abroad (5 months teaching English in Thailand, 2 months travelling around) tomorrow, but they can't get out of London until next Tuesday, and they don't have the money to stay anywhere.
-
My flight to Italy on friday may or may not get cancelled. This sucks.

How the ash plume spread.

Also I have been following the hilarity of Bill Bailey on Twitter trying to get home to London from Spain.
it's a beautiful day here in Provence as millions of people across Europe say, ok Ejaffjollijaper you've made you point
In the end he bought a car and decided to drive.

I want to marry Bill Bailey.

according to the internet John Cleese paid almost 5000 dollars for a taxi to take him from Norway to Belgium.
-
I'm in Madrid's airport now, with about 10 more hours to kill before I board.
-
My mother-in-law was supposed to go on holiday but her trip got cancelled. Now she's pooring all her rage and the cash she got returned to her into clothing and assorted other ... stuff, I guess, for my coming kid.
Which is cool, and all, but I hoped she would have gone on that trip. Would have been nice for her. Plus I was really looking forward to NFL (baby)clothing.
-
I am kind of reverse affected now - over-the-corridor girl just got back and I am betting (possibly uncharitibly) that the kitchen will get substantially messier in the next few days.
-
Woo my friend managed to get a plane ticket home on Saturday, so she's throwing a giant party to celebrate the "end of the volcation".
-
"End of the voliday" would also have been acceptable.
-
She was not attacked by voles Jimmy, you silly billy.

My god! It's full of lightning!
Look at the second picture. See the star trails in the upper left? Those are long exposures, at least 20 minutes.Still pretty rad though

ONE DOES NOT SIMPLY FLY INTO EUROPE

Oh dear, that's going to be the next meme now, isn't it?

As memes go, it's not so bad.

Here was the view out of my hotel window while I was stranded:

I think it's quite ingenious, actually. If you want a pretty picture with lots of smoke and lightning, point a long exposure camera at the volcano at night. Not only do you capture lightning without needing absurd reaction speed, the lightning acts as a camera flash that illuminates everything for half a second, and for the rest there is darkness. It's ideal.
-
Wish I had some high res of those lightning pictures.

I have a background of one of them, hold on

Man, this vulcano dealio sucks. The tuna that was ment to go into the sushi i just ordered, is still stuck at some airport! Outrageous! How am i supposed to enjoy sushi now?!
