Title: Who's affected by the volcanic eruption in Iceland?
Post by: jhocking on 18 Apr 2010, 06:33
I'm in Spain for a conference. I was supposed to fly back this morning, but because of the volcanic eruption in Iceland all flights were canceled. Now the soonest I can go home is Friday. doh

Is this causing problems for anyone else?

I live about a two hour drive from the volcano. It has not affected me in any direct way yet, but with a simple change in wind direction it might blow ash over my home, which would kind of suck.

Also I am sorry for my country being sort of a dick these days.

I've so far met two people who are possibly not going on planned holidays depending on how things hold up - haven't checked the news recently so I don't know how much longer flights are being delayed. One of my friends was supposed to be going to Corfu so that would definitely be out.

I don't fly and hadn't had anything planned so I'm otherwise clear. It's a bit weird looking up at the sky and seeing no sign of planes, though... also yesterday it was a really clear, sunny day, and you could see a sort of greyish haze in the air along the horizon, like a far-off raincloud, only with completely the wrong sort of appearance, if that makes sense. There's also been a fine layer of dirt on everything each morning.

My dad is in Cameroon at the moment, scheduled to fly to Paris and then Munich tomorrow or something. He might just come home via Joburg instead.

I also have two friends who were to fly home out of Paris this weekend. One of them is back in Perth and the other is not.

A good friend of mine was trapped in Italy and decided to take the opportunity to visit another friend of hers in Montenegro, since Italy wasn't affected at that point, but Norway was.

Oh, and my aunt, uncle and cousin couldn't fly down to Oslo for my grandmother's 80's birthday party, which kind of sucked since I haven't seen them in forever.

My son is having to drive 1000km from Germany to the UK to give a concert this week - at least he got in quick enough to grab a Eurotunnel booking.

I hope it's all clear by 6th May when I'm due to fly to New York for a holiday (also to go to my son's concert in the Carnegie Hall on the 11th).

A meeting I put a lot of work into getting ready for may not happen because the people we are supposed to meet with can't get to the US from Europe. Doesn't really hurt me any, but still annoying because of all the extra effort I've expended.

My dad is on an oil-rig off of Shetland. He was meant to be home Thursday and now he reckons the earliest we could see him is Tuesday or Wednesday.

My brother was meant to be going to Mexico for two weeks last Thursday to act as best man at his mates wedding. They've had to re-book the whole thing for August.

My girlfriend was meant to fly up and see me last Thursday also. By the time she could make alternative arrangements everything was sold out/way too expensive.

Seriously, the one fucking Thursday three people close to me need to fly somewhere.

I doubt any football matches in Norway have been postponed due to volcanic eruptions before now, and I still find it a little bit funny to say.

But it's weird to see how people are acting now that they're basically forced to find other transportation or solutions. It's not like there's a strike and people can go "Fuck the strike and the airline companies, I want to fly, waaahwaaahwaaah!", but there are newspapers that are organizing things where people who need a lift to go somewhere or people who are going somewhere and can offer a lift can put in an ad. Our prime minister just tweeted his way through Europe after having flown from New York to Madrid to Basel and then found a car, and answered tons of questions from followers, which he has never done to this degree before. While the whole thing obviously a huge hassle for a lot of people, I'm surprised at how reasonable and/or positive most of them seem. Now, is the media coverage ridiculous? Yes. But that happens basically every time something out of the ordinary that affects a lot of people occurs.

I had never considered the possibility that a volcano that far away would have any impact on my life, but a friend taking a PhD in geology informs me that if Yellowstone decides to erupt, we're all going to die. Scary prospect.

More immediately, a bunch of my friends have had their exam rescheduled from tomorrow because it is a languages exam, and upwards of 1/5 of the candidates are stuck in foreign countries, ironically, preparing for their exams. Also at least two members of my ice hockey team only made Nationals because of the volcano, in one way or another.

It's so weird, it is the first time we've had anything big happen in my lifetime without anyone to blame.

A niece of my girlfriend has seen her holiday go up in smoke. My girlfriend's mother is supposed to fly to the US this wednesday and we're waiting to see if she can.

It's vital that she does since I want a Patriots hoody and some football related baby clothes for my kid.

Bah! That's lame. Last time a volcano went up in Asia we had awesome sunsets for months.

I also don't recall there being all this drama about cancelled flights back then. Maybe our Asia-Pacific volcanoes are just better than your European ones.

The only way it has affected me somewhat, is that i was at one of the environmental agencies that monitors air quality, and asked if they decided to take this chance to see which percentage of fine dust comes from the airplanes. (They have measuring points on the ground, including nearby airports. Lower levels of fine dust at this moment -> the percentage that planes contribute!)

It was a fun discussion :)

While stuck is still stuck, increasingly I'm feeling like I'm trapped in a James Bond movie, which is pretty cool. I mean, the weather's great, I'm down the street from the Guggenheim, and the other conference people still trapped in the hotel with me include an American, a Greek fellow who lives in England, and a young woman who is double-sexy because she's from Belgium.

Joe you really need to get out and see the world more.

I should clarify, I didn't mean Belgium specifically is sexy, I meant she's European and speaks with an accent. Double-sexy as in she looks attractive, and then sounds attractive too because of the accent.

Also, people who've already left include a Portugese guy, a Brazilian woman, a German dude who lives in Finland, and an Australian guy who lives in Austria. um what else... There was a Candian dude, an Italian, an Englishman, several other Americans... this was a very international conference. And those were just the presenters; most of the attendees were Spanish, and then unexpectedly a group of Danish students.

The Eurostar train service runs from London to mainland Europe on 2 routes; London - Paris and London - Brussels. They have done well to get tickets because it is supposedly fully booked for days.

From Brussels they can get trains all over mainland Europe, there is likely an international service that runs to Budapest directly from Brussels.
Title: Re: Who's affected by the volcanic eruption in Iceland?
Post by: october1983 on 19 Apr 2010, 08:44
Plus, if their plan is to try to get to Budapest using the InterRail, going to Brussels instead of Paris makes a lot more sense as there were (are?) rail strikes happening in France - what shitty timing! So yeah, sounds like your Dad did pretty well, Jimmy.

I was in France until Sunday - we were worried we might not get back easily, but we were travelling by car and were already booked on to a Eurotunnel crossing. Despite the huge increase in demand, they managed to run things smoothly, and we weren't delayed at all.

Extremely large volcanic eruptions, which eject gases and material high into the atmosphere, can trigger lightning. This phenomenon was documented by Pliny The Elder during the AD79 eruption of Vesuvius, in which he perished. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcanic_lightning#Volcanically_triggered)

Also, people who've already left include a Portugese guy, a Brazilian woman, a German dude who lives in Finland, and an Australian guy who lives in Austria. um what else... There was a Candian dude, an Italian, an Englishman, several other Americans...

So Candy Land IS a real land! Man, and I thought it was just a board game. Who's up for a forumite meet-up in Candy Land?

Oh I have a friend and his wife who were supposed to return from a 7 month trip abroad (5 months teaching English in Thailand, 2 months travelling around) tomorrow, but they can't get out of London until next Tuesday, and they don't have the money to stay anywhere.

Also I have been following the hilarity of Bill Bailey on Twitter trying to get home to London from Spain.

it's a beautiful day here in Provence as millions of people across Europe say, ok Ejaffjollijaper you've made you point

In the end he bought a car and decided to drive.

My mother-in-law was supposed to go on holiday but her trip got cancelled. Now she's pooring all her rage and the cash she got returned to her into clothing and assorted other ... stuff, I guess, for my coming kid.

Which is cool, and all, but I hoped she would have gone on that trip. Would have been nice for her. Plus I was really looking forward to NFL (baby)clothing.

I am kind of reverse affected now - over-the-corridor girl just got back and I am betting (possibly uncharitibly) that the kitchen will get substantially messier in the next few days.

My god! It's full of lightning!

Look at the second picture. See the star trails in the upper left? Those are long exposures, at least 20 minutes.Still pretty rad though

I think it's quite ingenious, actually. If you want a pretty picture with lots of smoke and lightning, point a long exposure camera at the volcano at night. Not only do you capture lightning without needing absurd reaction speed, the lightning acts as a camera flash that illuminates everything for half a second, and for the rest there is darkness. It's ideal.
