Title: Badass Cake Thread 2010 Picture Heavy
Post by: ackblom12 on 08 May 2010, 21:51
As most of the regulars know, my wife (papersatan) makes me some seriously fantastic cakes every year for my birthday. One of the rules she sticks to is that the cake has to be 100% edible and it makes for some creative works. We were a little late due to finals and all but she finally got around to making a badass cake this year.

Behold my very own Pip-Boy 3000!

The screen is just hardened icing with a shit load of black food dye. That part was edible, not delicious. :P

Just in case you are not familiar with the cakes of old, here are a collection of the ones made for me thus far.

Invader Zim - My Rubber Piggy
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/ackblom12/Cakes/Katspictures017-1.jpg)

Call of Cthulhu
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/ackblom12/Cakes/Cthulhu.jpg)

Cthulhu Rising from the waters
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/ackblom12/Cakes/CthulhuDepths.jpg)

The best cake ever...

Portal and a Rickroll all in one. Rickrolled the entire group with that cake. Even had someone at the computer to start the song up the moment she lifted up the fake cake. It was a fucking beautiful moment.

Settlers of Catan
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/ackblom12/Cakes/STA72234.jpg)

She made this one with cup cakes topped with sugar cookies that were glued on with icing. Decorated the cookies with various candies and deliciousness was had.

Share your wonderful cakes with the world. I would be pretty happy with some of last years getting reposted honestly, especially the JFK cake.

Fine, I will share once more my cake depicting the assassination of our 35th president. (I think my links may have broken on the other page anyways)

As I recall, the Texas schoolbook depository had a strange taste from all of the food coloring it took to get it the color red we wanted.

A thousand times Y.

One of the best board games ever made in my opinion. Also reduces every adult, regardless of age, into 12 year old giggles when people say "I have wood for sheep."

Oh, forgot one!
I made this one, and it is less badass for looks than for content. It is a chocolate tart with chocolate ganache icing and chocolate crust; the lettering was made of chocolate heated and brushed onto baking paper. It is basically a Type 2 Diabetes cake.

My cake is not nearly as impressive as any of these.  But my derby wife and dearest work mate moved to Sydney a few weeks ago so I made her this cake for her work good bye morning tea.  It was devils food cake and delicious!

Her derby name is Billy Skater, which anyone who is not Australian will not get and even Australians who don't know who Billy Slater is won't get.  But she is obsessed with Billy Slater and the Melbourne Storm NRL team so it is a most excellent derby name for her and I miss her so much :( :( :(

Cake is just a dense yellow cake (Kat had to make it dense to support Gregg and his stuff) and pineapple icing. She even squeezed the pineapple juice herself!

Greg, the Funk, the watercolors and the Bailey's are homemade marshmallow fondant. She used a sewing needle and food coloring to paint the watercolors. She used Silicone molds and chocolate melting caps to make the shoes,(she used an actual baby shoe for that) table, and table legs and Gregg's chair. Shot glasses were used for the molding of the last two.

Just so I can say Hippo Valentines Day for my beloved.

Carrot cake topped with the usual cream cheese icing. Cautionary note, cream cheese doesn't freeze to a firm fondant as much as I had hoped. The design was supposed to be a bit more elaborate but I was ankled by some rather skewed hippos.

Title: Re: Badass Cake Thread 2010 Picture Heavy
Post by: jmrz on 25 Apr 2011, 03:58
Yes, it is topped with chocolate easter eggs, mini marshmallows and pink sprinkles.

I uh, basically just divided up a large vanilla cake batter, made the different colours and piled them on top of each other in the cake tin. Don't mix, make patterns if you feel like it, put less of one and then more of another, whatever you want, just don't get in there with a spoon and mix stuff. It's interesting to see what happens to the layers when it cooks though, some shift, some don't.

This is what it looked like before it went in the oven:

Our wedding cake is nowhere near as cool as all these, but we loved it anyway. The girl zombie is holding out a heart! My mom was going to make our cakes but she got really sick that week so I had to take over, so they got done in the midst of every other crazy thing that was happening. I usually make prettier cakes.

And the groom's cake turned out godawful but it still cracks us up. Ryan wanted these little zombie guys and fleeing villagers so I whipped up the cake and let him put them on it. It looks like something that belongs on one of those bad-cake websites, but it was tasty at least!

Lots of vibrant colours squick adults. If I know adults are going to eat I go for vanilla/white, cocoa/choc brown and pink.
