The computer? You don't have an iPhone, Droid, smartphone, iPad, netbook, laptop, and two desktops, one of which is capable of running Crysis at full settings(aw, who am I kidding, nothing can run Crysis at max specs)? Neither do I (pats laptop gently). But I do believe that there should be at least one computer in every household per occupant capable of using it- just like cars!

1. Are those two Jet-Roomba "kids" plus Mieville carrying off Pintsize?  (looks like it)

2. Love that Hannelore is growing her hair out.  It would be intersting to see what Hanners would look like with today's QC artistic style as opposed to when she first stalked down a heartbroken Marten way back in comic #515  .

3. I think "inscrutable" would be a proper word to describe Marten's moment of clarity.

4. And I wish I had medication for moments like that in my life.  (though I suppose alcohol ocassionally suffices...)

5. Also, Rocket Roomba and its side-kick (-cat) The Mieville Kid.

Pintsize is going to be getting a few dents from the upcoming "landing".  Cats always land on their feet, but AnthroPC's aren't quite that sophisticated!

In addition to the one where Mieville straps an engine on his back (http://www.topatoco.com/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=TO&Product_Code=QC-SCIENCEVERB&Category_Code=QC)?

Interesting that Hanners says the flying roombas (sounds like a trappese act) were running up a heavy electricity bill. So presumably their engines are ducted-fans rather than jets? Or ion drives? Or gravito-magnetic propulsion (take that General Relativity!)?

I'm thinking there's probably a German 'composite' word that would serve Marten's needs. If not, I'm sure a native speaker could cobble one up.

I take my oatmeal (is that porridge or gruel?) with sugar (well, Splenda; it's kind of like sugar. Kind of.) and salt. Don't know where that puts me on the weirdness spectrum.
Title: Re: WCT 17-21 May 2010
Post by: Carl-E on 17 May 2010, 10:09
Depends.  Instant, it's gruel.  "Quick" oats or traditional, it's porridge.  Grueldom is more a matter of consistancy, I believe.

Splenda is not like sugar.  Nothing is like sugar...  well, except more sugar.

Brown sugar and raisins for me, a splash of milk to make it more gruel-ly.  No salt, watching the BP.

And what do the sisters keep in that cauldron?  Porridge, or gruel?

The zhōu looks delightful... what exactly is it, though?  A white (rice-based?) porridge?  And what are the mix-ins?  The yóutiáo looks like frybread, done crisp, very nice.

Do you dip?

As for eggs in your grits, I hear it's an acquired taste, probably born of expediency.  Never been fond of grits in the first place, myself.  Been told I've never had good ones... I'm too far north.

You do have to understand, there's a lot more corn and wheat in the US and Canada than rice, so that's what we make our porridge out of.

And yes, Grits and Oatmeal lovers, that is the technical name for our favorite meals: Grits = ground corn porridge; Oatmeal = ground oat porridge.

Hanners is indeed adorable as usual!  My guess in the pill department is that she is taking Risperidone which is somewhat stronger, and wonderfully effective.

Essentially zhōu is a porridge, normally made from well-cooked rice, but in northern China (where it is too cold for rice cultivation) cornmeal, millet, barley, or sorghum are often used instead. Depending on how it is prepared, it can be a thin broth, or thick like Western porridge. Many different things can be mixed with the zhōu, including meat, eggs, fish, beans, and vegetables. The "mix-ins" in the photo are ròusōng (shredded dried meat; normally pork except among Muslim Chinese who use beef or chicken), and zhàcài (pickled mustard stem). Yóutiáo is indeed a "frybread" (I had to look that up, I had never heard the term before), and you certainly can dip. Here is a "breakfast of champions" Guandong-style (http://jackson.typepad.com/photos/taiwanese_food/congeeyoutiao.jpg), comprising zhōu broth, fish, egg, and meat (probably liver :-) ), served with yóutiáo.

Then, I decided to try the Kashi cinnamon shredded wheat cereal, which I liked, it just never filled me up. Now, I'm trying this almond flax and it's just not working for me at all.

Does anyone else think that Faye is just searching for reasons to not come out of her comfort zone at this point?

Of course the whole Sven situation was a setback, but in a way, she really went out of her way to keep him as emotionally distant as possible. It was as if she used sex to prevent making an emotional connection with Sven. Before they hooked up, they were on the path to become pretty close friends, even as they were antagonizing each other. Did Faye start a physical relationship to derail the feelings that she and Sven were developing?

I also think that Faye is the type of person who (like me) is afraid to pursue what they really want, not because they are afraid they will fail, but that they are afraid they will succeed.

If Faye and Angus begin a genuine romantic relationship, Faye will no longer be able to hide in her little (emotional) cave, whatever happens, things will be different, and that frightens her. (It scares the shit out of me!)

I don't think my old guitar would have anything nice to say about me!

Jeph was right with the "old QC" vibe though, this particular story arc has been great but the last few comics seem to have been a bit more tongue in cheek (a longer tongue than usual?).

What I love about this comic in comparison to CAD and stuff like that is that its just continuously weird and funny. Even the serious comics are interesting. Its an intriguing comic, so many others falter after a couple of years and some lazy story arcs, but Jeph keeps stuff fresh in your mind. It'll be interesting to see how Marigold takes all this in. Maybe she'll hide behind that book about the crusades again once she steals it...again.

Correctamundo!* (Although I wouldn't deprive Sven of his part in letting the relationship deteriorate into sex-sessions)

*And by the way, whoever it was that resurrected my inner Fonz, thanks awfully. Care to explain how to shut him up now? Ayyyy! Oh, for Christsakes.

Not the Sven/ Faye blame apportionment, nooooo! Why do people keep bringing that up, all it leads to is pain and flames.

As for Fonzarelli, just jump over a shark a few times and the audience will take care of canceling him for you.

Step 1: Find a shark.
Step 2: Jump over it.
DONE.

You're welcome.

Not just the recent arc but today's strip in particular is very classic QC, with that sort of bittersweet/snarky/silly thing happening.  Me like.  Although I gotta say that panel 1 is cracking me up a little bit more than panel 4 here, exclusively because of Mieville still clinging to Pintsize's foot.  Determined kitteh is determined.

Edit: Bah!  Ninja'd by westrim!  Meh, I'm posting it anyway.

No, no, that show died loooong before any shark was jumped.

That was just nailing the coffin shut.

Panel 1 was cute with Mieville, but I thought the human part was weird - Faye asking Marten for... what, permission?  Approval?  And in such a roundabout way - "would you be pissed..."  I mean, what was she expecting?  He'd be pissed with her for dating when he's happily dating someone else?  Or pissed with her for dating Angus, whom he specifically checked out for her back when awkwardness was defeated?  I mean, where did that come from?

She's a master of projection, our Faye.  (mistress of projection sounds like a dominatrix who works in a movie theatre...)  She's really reaching for a reason to not go there, I think something more is bothering her.

I think the comfort zone thing is a big part of it, but this girl is more self-sabatoging than anything.  She put her shields halfway up this time, let them be partially breached, and now she's asking if she should lower them.  It's a done decision, Faye.  Stop asking if it's right!

Marigold will recover.  Try treating her like an adult instead of rewrapping the cocoon, and she'll be fine.  She know all along anyway.  Let her deal with her self-deceptions, and you deal with yours!

God, I've got to stop talking in the second person to these comics...

There—I acknowledge you both. Unfortunately, I live about two hundred miles from the coast, so that solution may take a while—if any sharks are left there after the god-damned oil spill.

She's a master of projection, our Faye.  (mistress of projection sounds like a dominatrix who works in a movie theatre...)  She's really reaching for a reason to not go there, I think something more is bothering her.
No, mistress of projection sounds like the alt-name for a super-heroine, like The Maid of Steel or The Amazing Amazon. Maybe some sort of illusionist or psionic.

I think the comfort zone thing is a big part of it, but this girl is more self-sabatoging than anything.  She put her shields halfway up this time, let them be partially breached, and now she's asking if she should lower them.  It's a done decision, Faye.  Stop asking if it's right!
I agree, and I understand this part. You spend all your time behaving one way, especially if you've formerly convinced yourself it was benefiting you, and it is abso-fucking terrifying to not do that, however much 'healthier' everyone, including you, knows it to be. Some verifying helps, and yes, it's often taken to absurd lengths. Maybe we should be glad Faye's not asking Hanners, or Pintsize.

Marigold will recover.  Try treating her like an adult instead of rewrapping the cocoon, and she'll be fine.  She know all along anyway.  Let her deal with her self-deceptions, and you deal with yours!
Well said!

You know it's bad when Marten is telling you to take bold and decisive action.

Good catch, but there's been another instance of Marten telling someone to go for it, arguably hypocritically (http://questionablecontent.net./view.php?comic=246). In general Marten doesn't seem to be much for giving advice, though.

OK, does anyone else think that Jeph overdid it with the shadows? I mean poor Faye looks like a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piebald>piebald[/url] in today's (Tuesday) strip. I like that Jeph is continually pushing himself to improve his artwork, but unless his ultimate goal is  hyperrealism, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperrealism_%28painting%29) there comes a point where technique becomes more of a distraction than a plus, especially in a comic format.

Faye asking Marten for... what, permission?  Approval?    I mean, where did that come from?
Oh, just the first 500 or so comics, where the main romantic tension was the seemingly eternal
will-they-or-won't-they, Marten patiently waiting for Faye to be ready...  He took her in, was her best friend, wanted her, was patient and gentlemanly, and as we all know, never got her.

Because something similar has never happened before... (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1096)

But that wasn't similar- it was after the fact, and defnitely not permission/approval seeking.  More of a guilty admission, followed by concern for Marten's feelings.  And his response made it pretty clear that it wasn't an issue!

Faye asking Marten for... what, permission?  Approval?    I mean, where did that come from?

But... but... look, Marten's not her father/older brother, he's not Angus' best bud (ok, maybe he is, we don't really know much about Angus' social life), there's no reasonable (or even unreasonable) reason for him to be pissed about her dating Angus!

And she even admits as much in then next panel, she's just being junior high about it.

I dunno, it just seemed to come from left field.  And apparently it won't be resolved with the next comeek!

In true Fonz fashion, one swift WAP with the heel of the palm, applied judiciously to the left temple, should do the trick...

And i maintain there IS  (theoretically, potentially, but Marten's so good-natured, not really)  -  Marten did everything he could for almost five hundred strips to date Faye, and now she's about to give this Angus-come-lately the prize she never gave him.  Didst thou skim those first few hundred QCs and miss Marten's long-drawn-out frustration, punctuated by punchings?
Title: Re: WCT 17-21 May 2010
Post by: Is it cold in here? on 19 May 2010, 00:32
The similarity is that in both cases Faye was worried that Marten would be offended that after telling him she couldn't date anybody, that she was doing something with someone other than him.

EDIT: Is Marten good-natured, or just overcontrolled? Shuddering is in order at the thought of what would happen if he finally snapped.

I used to be quite into a WWII air combat simulator. The Allied forces are represented by red, the Axis by Blue. On forums, on servers, even in person, the divide is quite profound, and one can tell red from blue usually just by reading forum signatures.

It is Serious Business (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SeriousBusiness).

I've never been involved with any MMORPG, but I imagine the 'Alliance vs. Horde' (is it?) division is just as deep.

4. It would be interesting to bring back Pizza Girl, especially via secondary characters who are not as familiar with Penelope yet.  Or perhaps an actual Pizza Girl story-arc?

Do WoW players really get that worked up about Alliance and Horde?  Whatever they are.

Maybe I've been hanging around Warhammer players too long to get workied up over a bunch of pixels when there's plastic, pewter and some actual social interaction to deal with.

Or maybe I'm just a different kind of geek.

Results of yesterday's poll:

Items that we really don't want to become sentient

Anything that prepares our food  18 (36.7%)
Bagpipes  21 (42.9%)
Electric toothbrushes  8 (16.3%)
Cars (KITT's voice just creeped me out)  2 (4.1%)

Total Voters: 49

And as to why we don't need sentient cars - I want you to consider your backseat activities in a car that either feels an emotional attachment to you, or believes that what your doing is wrong - just saying.

It's actually kind of frightening the rampart racial hatred Blizzard has managed to drum up between Alliance and Horde characters. Both sides hate each other with a gusto normally reserved for the other guys in a World War. PvP servers especially, increased by the fact that often you will have several hours of play ruined by people twice your level murdering you a dozen times in certain zones. But even on PvE the difference is not that obvious. The other side is "loser no skill newbs" and your side is awesome.

Turns out we're on the same server! But then...

Me: "No way! I've never met anyone else on Ysondre! Horde or Alliance?"
Him: /suspicious stare "... Alliance. Why do you ask?"
Me: "I'm  Horde, that's why. Troll shaman." /glare
Him: "I don't think I want you handling my clothes, Troll." /glare
Me: "I don't want you in my line anyway, Ally!"
At that pont people were staring at us, so we both stopped and stared at the ground.
Me: "Did that really just happen?"

And then I was both embarrassed and proud for the rest of the day.

If you'd like, you could just as easily pretend the comic was OOC.  Otherwise, just accept the truth that Marigold's a bitch with introvert issues.

I suppose I'm the only one wondering if Marigold's reaction has a tad to do with running into (literally) another tall, nice-looking guy recently. She may think they're now out in droves to get her. And when in doubt, fall back on what you know.

I might otherwise have agreed with this, but she's not even looking at him in panel one, and she's not blushing later.  I think she just transitioned from her shyness default to her in-game aggression.

Alliance or Horde, if you don't tip the delivery person, you are scum.  And deserve to have any future food deliveries spat upon.  Don't get me wrong, the strip cracked me up, but . . . I wouldn't be too surprised if the pizza delivery service to Marigold and Angus' apartment was less thatn stellar from now on (I know I wouldn't blame Dale for flagging the address as a no tip destination).

Also:  DAAAAAAAAAAAALE!   :-D  Good to see him again.  I only hope that he doesn't have a friend named Chip . . .

Snubnose has a good point comparing Marigirl to a seven-year-old.

In many ways she's got a case of arrested development. She's been isolated from many normal growing-up activities, and I don't mean just sex, or even mostly sex.

I fucking loathe the 'tip culture'. It's not my goddamn fault that you're working a job that pays less than minimum wage. I'd rather have a 5$ delivery fee than have some shitweasel whos customer service skills are rudimentary at best expect me to personally give him money for doing his

they are doing their job if they deliver it to you 20 minutes after you order and an hour and a half after you order. the tip is meant as a thank you for getting the food to you at a reasonable time.  Most delivery people are just paid enough to cover their gas expense and sometimes minimum + gas expense and there actual money is expected in tips (not unlike a waiter).  I try to tip 15% unless its ridiculously late from their ETA.

Wise man says: forgiveness is divine, but never pay full price for a late pizza.

People tend to misunderstand the this; you still get minimum wage with a tip job.  The restaurant is allowed to deduct 'x' from the wages they give you based on the amount of tips you recieve, down to a certain amount, but if you were to make no tips, they're still required to pay you minimum wage.  So, for example, if you work one table in an hour, and they don't tip you, your boss has to pay you minimum wage for that hour.  However, if that table tipped you $10, then the pay you'd get from the restaurant would go down to somewhere around 3 or 4 dollars, instead of the 7 something it is now.  You're still making $13 - $14 an hour, however, instead of the 7 and change you'd make with no tips.  Supposedly, this incentivizes good service, but since everyone tends to think 15% is almost mandatory, some servers tend to expect it just for average service.  It's sort of a catch-22 situation.

No, that's Chinese Delivery Man. Dale doesn't even wear a costume. Hmmm... Something Luke Cage-ish for Dale? Powered armour like Nick Fury from Iron Man 2? A big striped wooly hat for Rasta Fasta Pizza Man?

"No Tips For Alliance Scum!" (intoned in a Darth Vader voice if you have the larynx for it) deserves to become a meme. It's much funnier than "No Soup For You". Dale learns the hard way that it's best you leave your personal life at home when you go to work, especially if you rely on tips (which are un-Australian by the way, though we've been corrupted by foreign visitors).

The creep for 'basic tip' from 10% to 15% is another thing that gets me..
Among the many reasons I avoid using services where the providers "expect" tips is the implicit extortion. The hovering threat of: "I know you've paid the asking price for your <service>, but if you don't pay me a tip over and above that, expect me to drag my feet, give you a lousy table, spit in your food etc." That probably says as much about my personality as that of anyone working in, for example, the food delivery industry, but plenty of people I've met who work in "tip" jobs relish telling stories about how they "punish" customers who don't tip "enough".

I work providing IT services to the medical industry. I think I should receive tips for my work in addition to my salary. I mean, you wouldn't want your medical records to get lost would you? Or switched with someone else's? Thank you... What, only 15%!? <type> <type> <type>   Not really funny actually, there are plenty of places where you do have to tip your doctor, nurses etc.

Pizza cost varies by region, I guess -- with coupon and before tip, an XL pizza is $20 in my neck o' the woods.

And to the non-tipping folks: I know "tip culture" varies depending on country, but if you live in the US and don't tip a delivery person or waiter/waitress, you are a cheapass.  Just get take-out.  Problem solved.

Pizza was the only thing my family ever got delivered, and the pizza places around here added a delivery charge so you're essentially forced to tip. Solution, we now pick up out pizza at the restaurant ourselves. The cost to us in gas is cheaper than the delivery charge.

Except for the fact that some people feel that people should do their job to the best of their ability regardless, and that it's not their responsibility to give you an extra reward just because you did your job well.  These people are not "cheapasses", they just have a different mindset.

When I worked in a sub shop making subs, sandwiches, salads, and pizza, it was nice whenever people gave me a tip because they thought I did a good job in a timely manner but I didn't think I was automatically entitled to it.  I didn't complain or feel in any way slighted when I didn't get a tip because all I did was the job I was hired to do in the first place.  This is how it should be.  Do your job the best you can, and you will get people who tip you.  Acting like it's a prerequisite for you doing your job right makes you look like a douchebag and makes people not want to tip you even more.

I deeply hate the very idea of a tip culture.

Waiters etc should simply be sufficiently paid. Prices should simply be fair. If you dont like the service of a restaurant, you should simply not return to it. Thats more than sufficient and has always worked for me.

Sixteen Yankee dollars is around twenty Australian. A large pizza from Domino's is $6.95, delivery is $8, but the minimum delivery order is $20. Not that I actually eat commercial pizza. Even the vegetarian pizzas* always seem to have cheese in the topping, and like most Chinese people (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lactose_intolerance#Lactose_intolerance_by_group), I don't get on with dairy foods. I prefer to make my own no-meat-no-cheese pizzas at home.

And if you're on a tight budget, why would you be ordering any delivered take-out food? Take-away is expensive. I cook better, cheaper, food fresh at home. By the time you've ordered and waited for delivery, there's not even much of a time saving over cooking fresh if you're well organised and choose suitable recepies. And there's no angst about tipping either.

*Amusingly, Domino's web-site has a disclaimer on its vegetarian pizzas: "Whilst Domino's Pizza takes due care, this pizza may contain traces of meat."

It's something that's truly American. Pizza Delivery is a staple from the 1950's onward, and it's always been normal in college towns like NoHo. And it's rare that a pizza from one of the chains (Domino's, Pizza Hut, Papa John's, Little Caesar's) DOESN'T have cheese.

Calzones are typically stuffed with cheese.  Stromboli, too - cheese and meat.

I think you mean bruschetta?  Although those can have cheese too, it's usually olive oil and some veggie toppings.  Of course, it's also usually on slices of bread, not a dough crust.  So yeah, flatbread bruschetta...

Oh yeah, the comic.  I though the sex joke was a bit lame myself, but at least the rest of it progressed the arc.  Liked the "got your back" bropunch there, too.

@Akima, silly men. I've never noticed that particular attribute, but then I haven't dated a guy since high school so my perspective may be somewhat skewed. Assuming they actually change as the get older, that is.

I'm told we guys generally don't change all that much after high school.  Some of us are trainable, though!

And every guy who's been married successfully (i.e. more than a few years) knows a lot about making accomodations and compromises.

It's almost like changing...

Got the Snow Crash reference, fun fun read (the main character's name: Hiro Protagonist) and loaded with future thinking.  It's the book that gave the word "avatar" its modern meaning.  But at first glance, I thought it was about a skiing accident.

I don't envy Jeph; having to come up with fresh, original, quality entertainment on a daily basis, to satisfy the likes of us...
He's put so much effort into it; I feel bad when he feels like he has an off week, doesn't feel it's up to his high standards.  Just for the record, dude, you've made one of the greats; consistently fun and funny, massive artistic quality, smart references, excellent characters, good plots, and tasty surprises.  I even love Yelling Bird.  I can't read most webcomics anymore; you've spoiled me.

Yeah.

As if I would be able to know to read her mind and know what tip would be appropiate.

Really, I hate this "tip culture".

Oddly enough, I thought about that too... But in the USA (unlike Australia for example (http://ned247.com/Banknotes.jpg)) banknotes of all denominations are pretty much the same size, colour and design, so I guess it was a ten, a five and a one.

And Dora must really get wired after sex. Cut and dye hair, and do laundry?

1. I enjoy Dora's hair changes as long as it eventually goes back to black.  While black hair really the best look for her in the end, I think it is very characteristic for Dora to change things up now and then for the sake of Change.

2. I think Jeph's new hair-coloring art-style is a bit too "streaky," but really that just means the process needs refinement &/or smoothing out.

3. Wish I had such 'wired' energy after sex, could get so much more done in Life...  (P.S. Edit: Besides more sex, of course... )

4. (past topic, comic #1668:) Lobster pizza, sold at Red Lobster and/or the Sarpino's pizza franchise (and probably others, of course, but those are examples I know of off-handedly).  Generally does cost in the 16-20 US-Dollar range and uses a Alfredo-like cream sauce over tomato sauce.  Gold-plating probably extra.

5. As always, Hanners is hilarious, even if the gag is not directly related to her.

I guess Americans assume you can read. Or recognise the portraits of dead white men (not all of them dead Presidents despite the slang term). I confess though, that I find our different-sized, brightly-coloured polymer banknotes easier to recognise. Which is more than can be said for the portraits on them, apart from the Queen.

A ruling from four years ago, and nothing's changed. Well, the bills have gotten even uglier (go to newmoney.gov and check out the $100 bill -- it looks like Photoshop threw up on it) but they're all still the same size and shape as far as I can tell.

Oh, wait... "raised printing". Yeah, I can see that lasting more than a few weeks in somebody's wallet. Just do something simple like notch the corners. A $100 has all four corners, a $50 has one knocked off, two from a $20, three from a $10, all from a $5, and make the dollar bill half-sized. But stop making real currency look like Monopoly money.

Most of the US bills are being redesigned this and next year anyway.  The new US $100 does have raised printing, as well as a few other features designed specifically to aide blind and visually impaired people, and is a visually different color than other dollar bills.  It's more of a teal now.

Therefore it is better for them to modernize the currency incrementally, rather than all at once.

And they should eliminate the $1 bill and the penny altogether(except maybe for commemorative purposes). Use Dollar coins and round to the nickel.

Also, most of those tea-party twerps probably wouldn't mind as long as you left "in god we trust" on there. Australians are more flexible; we've modernised our currency (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banknotes_of_the_Australian_dollar) twice in living memory. Once when we decimalised and dumped the Australian pound for the Aussie dollar in 1966, and again in 1988 when paper banknotes were replaced with the polymer notes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polymer_banknotes) we use today. Our notes are now all the same width (so they can be read easily by machines) but different lengths (so that blind people can distinguish them by touch).

There were changes to our currency here in NZ around the late '80's - early 90's (if memory serves, I tend to forget the dates),  We went from paper notes to the polymer notes and dropped the 1c and 2c coins and went to $1 and $2 coins instead of notes.  Those were the biggest changes to our currency since we went to the New Zealand Dollar from the Pound in the late '60's.  Minor changes have occurred since, but one of the mini-majors was when we dropped the 5c coin about three or four years back.

I'm just compulsive enough that I'd probably be rather upset if I went to a country where all the money wasn't the same size and color, or if the US ever went to that model.  It's all got to match, damnit, or it's just unsightly or chaotic.  Like a pocketful of receipts from five different stores.

Before you ask:  change doesn't bother me because as soon as I get home, I set the quarters aside for laundry and everything else goes in the piggy.  Once a season or so I get around to taking the contents of the latter down to my bank and they turn it into crisp, identical bills or semi-imaginary numbers in my checking account.

Also:  in this college town, a large pizza of decent quality (ie, Not Dominos) with three toppings (pepperoni, mushrooms, black olives) is just over US$20.

The US is too full of people who hate change too much to pull off a currency change other than incrementally.  Or changes that are completely hidden, like coppertoning those zinc pennies they use now, since copper's so expensive.  We've had dollar coins since before we were a country, but once people finally got used to paper money, with the dollar as the smallest denomination, efforts to eliminate it and replace it with a coin have consistantly failed.  For a new country, we desperately cling to our "traditions"!

Change like this has to be done top-down, and our psuedo-republic/democracy (it's really neither) can't get away with it (hell, it can't even reform health insurance decently...).  As a limited-sight person, I know it would be better to have distinguishable bills rather than having to sort them under a bright light.  I know some people who go to great lengths to keep it all sorted out, and most have to depend on the honesty of the clerk.

But change like that ain't gonna happen anytime soon!

Oh, and the "now I'm re-dying it!" comment... so she's got the dye on while she puts up the laundry?  Sounds hazardous, unless all the clothes are black, or you don't mind purple spots...

having lived in both america and canada, i will state that $1 and $2 coins are a pain in the ass. think of it this way:  if you buy something with cash, would you rather receive three lightweight foldable bills that fit neatly in your wallet, or three large heavy coins that are going to jingle in your pocket and may or may not fall out when you sit down. now multiply this by three or four of five times. you're either digging in your pocket and counting out exact change with every transaction, or you end up walking around with great big heavy pockets full of metal by the end of the day. furthermore, it makes it really inconvenient if you prefer or for some reason have to carry your money in small denominations.

as to why americans resist changing the currency so hard, i'd say it's less a fear of change than simply that certain things are embedded really deeply into the national consciousness. simply put, money = green.

Am I the only one who thought Jeph hit the wrong color when coloring Dora's hair in Friday's strip before reading the next panel?

I wonder how Hannelore copes with money.

She must use plastic for almost everything. I can see her using easily sterilized coins for everything else, but paper money must totally squick her unless she's never stopped to think about it.

I don't think she's stopped to think about it... yet.

(Cue Monday's horror reveal as Dora accidentally sneezes on a quarter...)

Time to wrap this poll up while I try to think of something for the missus and I to do on our anniversary today
Hey, you actually remembered. In some circles, this is in itself overachieving, never mind arranging an activity. Of course, deduct points for every reminder Mrs. Reiver left around the bunker, double for those that actually say 'anniversary.'

I don't mind the Aussie $1 and $2 coins here too much. I don't put coins in my pocket (or anything else much) anyway. The one that bugs me is our 50 cent coin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_fifty_cent_coin); it's huge, with pointy corners. Useful for throwing at ninjas (What? Australia is popular with Japanese tourists, and ninjas need vacations too), but a nuisance otherwise.

Why should you put coins in your pocket if you have a wallet anyway? I prefer coins to notes because they're easier to put in the wallet and you can cound exact change when you're waiting in line. What I don't like about swiss coins is that 10 and 20 centimes are bigger than 50 centimes and the five francs piece is a bit big.

Yeah, that bugs me about my country's coinage. In decreasing order by physical size:

 50p
 10p
  2p
 £1
 20p
  1p
  5p

THIS MAKES NO SENSE!

Also I have an urgent favour to ask (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,24793.msg939138.html#msg939138).

Having several ranges of coins distinguished by metal, thickness and shape is necessary to cover practical needs.

When I was young (i.e. pre-decimalisation in UK) there were two series of coins in common use - copper and silver (though no longer of those metals).  Actually, there were three, including the gold ones (sovereign etc, which stayed gold) which were not in common use.  But keeping proportionality of size to value (for ease of weighing, and to prevent problems with counterfeiting) meant that the size range for each type was very wide - a silver 3d  piece to a silver 5/- piece was a factor of 20:1 in weight, which is why the crown (5/- piece) did not circulate, and the 3d piece was replaced in common use by an anomalous 12-sided coin.  Even then, the size range from the 6d ("tanner") to the 2/6 ("half-crown") was considerably wider than we now have to handle.

The size issue is one of value, based on the metals.  In the US, the penny has always been copper, since the early eighteen hundreds, and has always been (roughly) the same size.  There were two cent coins, which were about twice as big, and the original five cent coins were huge copper monstrosities.  The relative value of nickel to copper allowed them to make a five cent piece (nickel) much smaller.  The dime, a $.10 piece, was made of silver originally, and so is considerably smaller than a penny.  The quarter ($.25), $.50 piece, and silver dollar were all proportional to weight, with the silver dollar being a full 1 ounce of silver  (until '63, when silver-clad copper started being used...)  They were very large, and anything of larger denomination was made of gold.  There was a gold one dollar coin minted for a while, but it was smaller than a dime.

The current "golden dollars" that the US has been minting for quite awhile now (no gold involved) are closer to the old gold ten dollar pieces in size, which makes roughly the same size as a quarter, which is a constant complaint about the coins.

Sorry, I come from a long line of US coin collectors, and though the only thing I collect are wheat back pennies (my prize is a 1909 VDB I found in change), different parts of the family have everything from prerevolutionary coins through every mint set ever put out!

In other words, we've hit one of my nerd spots...

And it's Sunday afternoon.  What else am I gonna do while waiting?

They pretty much have to be.  The price of copper now means that a copper penny would be worth more for the metal than for the penny itself.  Not by much, but still enough to make a difference; you'd have people melting down pennies and reselling them to buy more pennies to melt down.  Absolute anarchy, I tells ye!

Nazis.

There, I've officially Godwin'd the thread.
Thats not how it works ... though I definitely love the intention.

I dont see why its such a bad idea to ask for money thats easily distinguishable, even for blind people.

And why its a bad idea to have different colors so even non-blind people can distinguish it more easily ? Doesnt need to be so drastic that it looks like monopoly money.

Personally I prefer artists and philosophers on money, not some politicans. But then again, the USA doesnt have that many really big artists, now, do they ? Just kidding. They lack classic artists, though. No wonder if a country was founded only some 200+ years ago.

Short hair—BLEAH—hate it!
Suit yourself. If a woman has a really beautiful face, short hair can be very cute. Nothing to block the view. :D

I for once loved it on Mena Suvari and Natalie Portman.

My question:

is the reference in the title to Dora's new hair, or to Hanner's mom's new pool boy?
I definitely vote pool boys. Dora definitely cuts her hair more often than just once every three months.

Three months though is the time one stays in initial love before thinking the whole thing over, so that makes sense. Hanners mom simply grows bored of the pool boy and gets a new one.

Thank you for putting a knot in my brain.

Or for introducing a new dollar that has 100-1000 times the value of the old money, so cents actually have a reason to exist at all any more.

Hah, they get that a lot! They're actually 19, been at this a couple of years now. "Vote" by clicking on the sliding scale of stars under the video, visiting their Myspace page and playing the tracks, re-Tweeting the link or sharing on Facebook, pass it on. It's all about generating measurable "buzz".

I will admit to having had a vague longing to run my hand over Persis Khambatta's head when I first saw Star Trek: The Motion Picture. But I was young and more…impressionable.

I have always wondered if anyone ever suggested her character's 'clone' Deana Troi be bald, and how Marina Sirtis would've reacted to that.

That's Persis Khambatta in Star Trek - The Motion Picture (sadly she died of a massive heart attack at 47).

This is what she looked like un-shorn:
