Title: There is a live QC wiki!
Post by: Is it cold in here? on 26 Jun 2010, 11:01
http://questionablecontent.wikia.com/wiki/Questionable_Content_Wiki

In parallel, efforts are underway to revive the QC Annotation Project, and does anyone have contact information for quiki.net?

So far it's mostly character biographies, but it has links to other cool resources like jwhouk's episode summaries and beaniesue's list of Coffee of Doom specials. Besides the list of wanted articles and stubs, please feel free to contribute articles about the QC world's background.

This can be a home for detailed information that's not "notable" enough for Wikipedia, creative works like the AnthroPC Handbook, non-NPOV material like explanations for new readers about why QC is awesome, and if all else fails, transcripts of the comics that aren't in ohnorobot (but wait until all else fails).

In addition to content, offers of hosting are welcome. No offense to the wikia.com folks, but I can see objections coming, and fully understand them.

Come have fun!

Fun, though.  I've edited a page or two already...

No idea.

I have changed the Cast List to reflect Cosette Beauvais-Hurlbut's current status in the comic.

Some of the characters on the character page are listed by first name (Peter Bianchi), some by last (Penelope Gaines).  Man, what a mess.
Title: Re: There is a live QC wiki!
Post by: Is it cold in here? on 06 Aug 2010, 22:01
I recommend setting the DEFAULTSORT code to do first name first, so that it will be consistent with all the characters for whom we only know the first names. Click the Source button while editing to see and modify it.

There's a case to be made for doing last name first where possible, but that discussion should happen on the wiki's community page: at least one of the regular contributors isn't on the forum here.

If a paid host isn't out of the question, I've had a good experience with IPower (http://www.ipower.com/ipower/web-hosting/unix-compare-plans.bml). They have a $6/mo plan that includes free setup and a free domain name with unlimited space and bandwidth. (There's also a $4/mo plan but the domain and setup are extra and the space and bandwidth are limited.)

Updated the Scribd version. I'm contemplating expanding some of the abbreviated descriptions of the first few hundred strips, but I'm not sure if I wanna go too much in depth.
Title: Re: There is a live QC wiki!
Post by: Carl-E on 18 Sep 2010, 12:19
Maybe getting more comics transcribed into ohnorobot would be a better use of resiurces?  You don't want that level of detail in the SxS, but it's nice to be able to do text searches and the like.  Your brief descriptions and key phrases are pretty handy, but you've gotta draw the line somewhere!
Title: Re: There is a live QC wiki!
Post by: Is it cold in here? on 18 Sep 2010, 12:55
Jeph said on Twitter that the "Transcribe this comic" link was incompatible with the code on his site. Now, logically there should be some way to enter it directly into ohnorobot. I asked Ryan North about doing that. No answer.

I always kinda wondered how a link was incompatible with any form of web code anywhere.
It's not the link that's the issue; it's the automatic tracking of the comic number that goes behind the scenes so that when you click "transcribe this comic" you actually get shown the right comic to transcribe.

Whew, that was a lot of stuff to do.

I am glad to say that we have pictures for (pretty  much EVERY) entry in the Wiki.

And I've also done some "cleanup" on some of the articles and Info boxes for characters (and even for our three "main locales").

Wow... it's really become all about Faye, hasn't it?

I've always felt that Faye was the real core character of QC - at least to the extent anyone cane be in a well-rounded ensemble.  Maybe it's just me, but I'm always more curious about what's in store for her than for any of the others.

*EDIT* I edited it.  Which is hard to say ten times fast.

Post by: Is it cold in here? on 23 Aug 2011, 01:42
What do people consider to be the best article on the wiki?

More precisely, which should be held up as an example to new contributors? "Best" by itself could mean "most valuable", in which case the clear winner would be jwhouk's episode summaries, which is too big a project to imagine anyone else emulating.
Title: Re: There is a live QC wiki!

Does anyone have feedback on the wiki?

I'm wondering where to take it from here, so thoughts about that are wanted, but mostly I'm fishing for compliments.

EDIT: Please suggest ideas about how to increase participation.
Title: Re: There is a live QC wiki!
Post by: jwhouk on 25 Sep 2011, 19:24
I think we should consider a couple of format styles: one for the "main" characters (the top five - Marten, Faye, Dora, Pintsize, Hanners); one for the "supporting cast" (Sven, Angus, Marigold, Tai, Penelope, Steve); one for "recurring characters" (Momo, Winslow, Jimbo, Ms. Vance, Wil) and one for "walk-ons" (anyone basically whose name we don't know).

Title: Re: There is a live QC wiki!

Hanners is top five?
Title: Re: There is a live QC wiki!
Post by: jwhouk on 25 Sep 2011, 19:51
The author's own words: "most popular character". That's top five.

EDIT: And, as proof, Andy 147 lists 'em pretty much as I said: Faye (1110), Marten (1084), Dora (817), Hannelore (422), Pintsize (260).

I'd put it as this:

This arc has the potential to reach the impact of that arc. But currently, it is still building. 2134 does not come any where near 504 did in terms of character development. Wait and see.

In and of itself, not really wiki worthy though, is it? A "Hanners' childhood is described here (link)" is about you might add to the wiki safely, IMO.

Hanners' childhood is described in more than one place, so there would have to be multiple links, and it's a part of her characterization. I'm fine with seeing it in the wiki.

Well, that's that. Went through and finished up the last of them today - with Dora's article (http://questionablecontent.wikia.com/wiki/Dora) getting a brand new picture.

The only article I didn't tackle was the AnthroPC one, mostly because I didn't really have the time and go back through ALL the APC references.

Post by: jwhouk on 29 Jun 2012, 19:20
I just threw up my attempt at reorganizing the APC entry (http://questionablecontent.wikia.com/wiki/AnthroPC).  (Pun not entirely intended.)

The main reason why I went on this "binge", by the way, was a hope that it would make it easier to update characters as the strip moves along - without resorting to spoilers.

I'll admit that the three intern articles aren't as "in depth" as some of the older short-term characters, but it's hard to do a really in-depth article on a character you just met and don't have a lot of background for - and don't want to put "SPOILER" all over their article.

The strip-by-strip list is updated!

http://www.scribd.com/doc/98017010/QCSxS (http://www.scribd.com/doc/98017010/QCSxS)

Keep in mind that it's been tagged "mature content" because of the funsexytimes we've dealt with in the comic's history.

I'm thinking at some point of making it more of a transcript, but I'd need a lot more time and energy for that.

Yeah, this is more or less for reference. Though for about the last thousand strips or so, it has been (essentially) a transcript.

If she was, for instance, someone who kept being mistaken for his sister, I would have expected him to say that; the vagueness makes it pretty certain, I'd say.

If there seems to be something different about the front page of the Wiki, it's because I made a slight change in our "Brady Bunch" lead picture. The picture now reflects the nine characters with the most appearances in the comic, through September of 2012.

For those of you who may be new, I have updated the "Strip-by-Strip" summaries list (http://www.scribd.com/doc/32349451/Questionable-Content-Strip-by-Strip) over on Scribd.

This is NOT a transcript of the 2k-plus strips that Jeph has drawn since '03; this is more or less a "Cliff's Notes" document to the comic. I will admit that it tends to get more "wordy" after about the strip 1,200 mark - which was about when I started the list.

Still - it's a good reference if you want to look up when Faye came up with the idea of The Theory of Hipster Relativity; or the relationship diagram from Faye's counseling session; or when exactly was the last appearance of Ellen or Nat in the strip.

Or you want to find out what strip is called the "Rickroll" strip (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1658).

Necro'ing a pinned thread, because I FINALLY got some time to update the SxS document!

http://www.scribd.com/doc/98017010/QCSxS

Do keep in mind that Scribd is a stupid funny creature that requires you to either sign up and publish something of your own to get access to complete articles, or makes you pay for an account. If you're really wanting a copy of the first 10 years of QC in a summary document (NOTE: it is NOT a transcript), drop me a PM and I can send you either a PDF or DOCX version.

EDIT: I also finally edited the SxS summary on the Wiki (http://questionablecontent.wikia.com/wiki/Questionable_Content_strip_by_strip). It's a bit on the long side (and unformatted in some spots).

Ctrl-Plus and Ctrl-Minus may be Firefox-specific, Masterpiece, but that browser at least does tell you they exist. On the top menu, go to View->Zoom and look at the choices. Both "Zoom In" and "Zoom Out" show you their keyboard shortcuts.

If you're using any other browser, who knows?

Title: Re: There is a live QC wiki!
Post by: Masterpiece on 05 Aug 2013, 22:35
It's not a very transparent way of informing you about a shortcut. Usually shortcuts are meant for power users, people who have acquainted themselves with a program and will want to perform quicker and more efficiently.

Burying a function into a keyboard shortcut only will cause novice users to not see that function at all. Which is why I was surprised that there was no visual alternative to a keyboard shortcut at all. Storel does mention that most browsers do indeed show these functions in some menu point, so I'll proceed with caution in saying that I'd have put a more obvious button somewhere where it's easily recognizable (especially considering that it's a button used frequently).

Marten Reed is one of the main characters of Questionable Content. In fact, as the first person to speak in the comic, it could be argued that he is the main character. When the comic started, he was working in an office job which he detested. He now works at the Smith College Library, with Tai as his boss.

Marten works at Smif College. Not Smith.

*** IMPORTANT PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT ***

The lead character of the comic strip, Questionable Content, the son of Henry Reed and Veronica Vance, spells his name:

M-A-R-T-E-N.

He has no "I" in his name - since, as his mother points out, his father was "such a stick in the mud" and refused to name him "Marten Tiberius".

THIS HAS BEEN A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT.

Carry on, then.

So, uh, I made this thing (http://cesiumcomics.com/qctags/)... it lists which characters appeared in which comics. Click one of the names and it'll go to a list of comics that character is in. You can search multiple names by separating them with "_", and you can exclude a character by using "&exclude=name". For example, if you want comics with Marten and Pintsize, but excluding guest comics, you would use this URL (http://cesiumcomics.com/qctags/?tag=marten_pintsize&exclude=guest-comic). It's updated whenever I remember to update it.

(I don't think Jeph would have a problem with it since the comic links go to his site (i.e. nothing is hotlinked or anything like that), but if he does, I'll take it down.)

But it raises an interesting question -- why so many more guest comics in QC than by JJ in other comics? Have I just not found them? Or is JJ such a popular person that other artists will do guest strips for him without reciprocation? Or is QC so popular that a mention in it enough reward?

It looks like they're using the same IP address multiple times. Should be fairly easy to ban them. They're on Comcast in Florida, by the looks of it.

edit -- Also I'm not sure about the Wikia software, but on Mediawiki there's an option to "semi-protect" a page, which allows most logged-in editors to edit it, but disallows IP addresses and newly-created accounts.

edit2 -- Looks like you can do the same thing on Wikia. (http://community.wikia.com/wiki/Help:Page_protection)

As far as I can tell, the only person on the QC wiki with Admin or even Bureaucrat privilege is someone called Rbfskywalker, who has made zero edits and has not logged in since 2010. Sounds like we need to ask Wikia to appoint a new Admin so we can control vandalism better.

I'm just going to share that when I see that username my brain reads it as "Rubidium Fluoride Skywalker."  :psyduck:

I have no problem with rubidium fluoride as long as I'm not there when they mix the rubidium and the fluorine.

How do you feel about FOOF?

It's a self-correcting problem.

All of a sudden I got about five requests for access to the Cast List on my Google Drive...

Will somebody please correct the Robots/Gary entry?

They're talking about an appearance of Gordon on that page.  It was mislabeled using the name Gary, but Gary is the mysterious bot from strip 2070.

The robot on page 2430 is named Gary. Jeph names it in his comment just below the comic.

After the Maurice/Marcel fracas, I just tend to thing Jeph's bad with names (at least for minor characters).

We'll know for sure when Angus comes back as "Andy".   :psyduck:

I have an entry in the wiki and none of you do. That should be a lesson to you all about your uselessness.

Question; do we know when Marten's birthday is or what the name of the town he was born/grew up in is?

I don't think so about the birthday. The closest we've got for his hometown is somewhere in Northern California. Strip: http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=253 Out of comic info: http://jephjacques.com/post/11678709862/qa-dump-12

I updated the "QC Bunch" grid on the main page to reflect our new #9 in the character appearance count - BUBBLES!

To whoever is running the wiki: Not sure if you have any control over the ads, but the wiki has become unusable due to constant iPhone popup ads.

My browser has a built-in ad blocker, and the wiki doesn't complain about it.

I've never seen anything in the wiki admin controls to affect wikia's ad networks.

The wiki always has the door open and the welcome mat out for new editors, and a recent opportunity is to update the pages for May (https://questionablecontent.fandom.com/wiki/May), Momo (https://questionablecontent.fandom.com/wiki/Momo), and Sven (https://questionablecontent.fandom.com/wiki/Sven) to include the events of the hookup arc.

I have been an editor on Questionable Content Wiki for two and a half years. I've started a "How to" page (https://questionablecontent.fandom.com/wiki/User:Andrybak/How_to) to describe my contribution process. (https://questionablecontent.fandom.com/wiki/User_blog:Andrybak/How_to_edit_Questionable_Content_Wiki) It might be useful if you want to start contributing to the Wiki, but don't know where or how to start.
