J, I see the point you are trying to make, however, your linked thread is about the film which is only slightly related to the series. The is nothing wrong with posting a thread about a television series.

The movie is like the inbred cousin of the series anyway

I was a big fan of this idea until I saw that the girl is aangs sucsessor. This raises a whole lot of problems firstly if this is only set 100 years after the defeat of the forelord that seems a pretty short amount of time for the world to get sufficiantly fucked up to warrent a series. Especially as they won't want to discredit aang as someone who let trouble brew under his watch. Which means at most you've got  is the ten or so years between aangs death and korra's awaking as the avatar for what ever (we can assume) war is going to be the focus of the series to get going, and considering the fire nation had been leading their war for over a century and in that time all they had done was take out the air nomads and take over the smaller earth and water nation settlements, I have trouble seeing how this will have as much of a sense of real impending doom as the last airbender had

Leading on from that 100 years isn't really long enough to repopulate the air benders. Which I suppose could be a story point, so maybe not so much of a problem.

Also I see aang being her guide as a bit iffy. Long time fans of the series will want to see the aang we know and love, young, quirky, funloving, but he will have matured 90 odd years worth by then and people will expect to see this come through in his behaviour and way of talking. So again not impossible, it's just a really fine balance to hit.

And I suppose all it needs for my first point to be wrong is for there to be some clever and inventive writing and not simply a copy paste of th first series. Maybe korra's problems will spring from trouble in the spirit world. So I now seem to have returned to a place of "hey this could be pretty good" and for the moment I'll allow myself to be optimistic about it

I'm not sure if you can really assume war would have to be the focus of the series though. You could base a lot of the show around the Avatar's role as a mediator between the spirit and physical realms. They did a good job of touching on that in the first series, but it's still a pretty untapped and wide open resource for them.

Rumor is that it will also do some flashbacks to the old gang and their adventures.

The things I want touched on:
-Zuko's mom
-Iroh's spirit world experience
-Maybe some reconciliation between Toph and her parents
-Also anything involving the White Lotus

And fuck, that's about it

actually, i was not trying to make any kind of point, i was linking to a post i had made in that thread which contained something related to the concept of a new avatar series.

a better approach i think would have been to tell a new story within the same continuity, either a sequel with the characters having a new adventure (perhaps tying up a loose plot thread or two) or to do a prequel with a previous avatar.

essentially, i am just happy to see a new series trying to tell a new story, rather than more movies needlessly retelling the original one.

Actually, dude, when I click your link, I get taken immediately to Alex C and Inlander's posts. For yours I have to scroll down some more.

On top of that, if thats what you were trying to do, instead of just posting a "yay" with no puncuation at all, and nothing to indicated that you were not being sarcastic, one can only assume. And keep in mind, this is the internet. Emotion, and motivation are hard to read in just plain text, especially when it is just one word.

No, I'm not talking about the James Cameron film.  For me Avatar: The Last Airbender will be the only Avatar I talk about.

What did you guys think of the live-action version of “The Last Airbender”?

Konietzko: We’re just really focused on this new show right now, and kind of taking this off in its own direction and not concerning ourselves with that right now.

So you didn’t follow the casting controversy about the movie version of “The Last Airbender”?

Konietzko: We didn’t head up that film. We’re just happy to be back generating the original content in this mythology, which is what we do.

Also acceptable: "La la la, can't hear you!" "The what? Never heard of it" and "Look behind you! A three-headed lemur-bat!"

With all of the originality that came from the series, and how much I enjoyed and even looked forward to every new episode, I'm inclined to give the creators the benefit of the doubt.  I'm definitely looking forward to this.

I heard recently that the series is going to be more streamlined, cause it's only going to be a miniseries, so they are trying not to make many filler episodes.

Name spelling are guesses, obviously.

Recap:

--- This show happened due to fan demand.

--- Bryke were unsure, but the ideas came naturally and quickly.

--- One of things that excited Bryke was differentiating between Korra and Aang.

--- Korra is meant to be akin to a tough snowboarder.

--- She was conceived to be more rugged than Aang.

--- The musical concept is "if the Chinese invented Jazz."

--- Korra's Animal Companion is a female Polar Bear Dog named Naga.

--- The New Team Avatar will be a trio: Korra and two brothers named Mako and Bolin.

---Mako and Bolin are brothers, both benders, but of different disciplines.

--- Mako is a Firebender, and the brooding type.

--- Mako is named after the Mako.

--- Bolin is the younger brother, a goofy Earthbender.

--- Mako's animal companion is named Paboo/Pabu.

--- Paboo/Pabu is a Fire Ferret, a hybrid of red panda and ferret.

---Republic City is now "United Republic."

--- UR was founded by Aang and Zuko.

--- UR is meant to be a multi-bender utopia.

--- UR is based on 1920's Shanghai.

--- Aang found a herd of Sky Bison after the war.

--- There are new species of Flying Lemur.

--- Toph travelled the World, teaching metalbending.

--- Ty Lee's Chi blocking style has spread.

--- Aang and Katara had three kids.

--- Tenzin is the youngest.

--- Tenzin had three children with a non-bender named Pema.

--- Jinora, the studious one. Iki, the fun and crazy one. Meelo, the young goofy one.

--- Tenzin looks like a total badass and he's serious as fuck, but can be funny.

--- Toph's Daughter is the chief of police.

--- The police are metalbenders and they zipline around the city.

--- The anti-bending group are called The Equalists.

--- They fight using Ty Lee chi blocking technique.

--- They are led by a masked man named Oman.

--- There will be two seasons.

--- Season 1 will be 12 episodes , 2eason 2 14 episodes.

--- Lauren Montgomery and Josh Middleton will be on board for Season 2.

--- Kisu will be undertaking his normal role for Korra.

--- There is an arena sport called Pro Bending.

--- Pro bending will look to MMA and flashy martial arts styles for inspiration.

Also, loved this exchange from Episode 1:

Jinora (Katara's granddaughter): Gran Gran, I've been reading all about your old adventures. I've been dying to ask you, what happened to Zuko's mom?
Katara: Well, Jinora, it's an incredible tale! *is interrupted by other granddaughter*

I watched the first three episode and while the show looks interesting i dislike the pro-bending sport. 1 The benders apparently run out of juice so to speak which has never occurred in avatar before. 2 The only attacks thrown in this sport are weak and not visually impressive at all. 3 It has the same effect of having 3 people throw weighted dodgeballs at each other, only instead of dodgeballs its fireballs/earth frisbees/water whips. When i pictured this event in my head it seemed like it should have been more like Toph's battles as the Blind Bandit but with teams rather than 1 on 1.

I watched season 1 recently as well and I thought it really didn't compare well to TLA. Too much pointless drama, for one. Korra being an insufferable brat at the start for two. But it was quite entertaining nonetheless.
Title: Re: Avatar: Legend Of Korra
Post by: Neko_Ali on 19 Dec 2014, 10:19
Korra's brattieness is part of her character arc. She gets even worse about it in the second season, but then has a turn around and becomes a much more mature person. At first she's all brashed and ego-inflated that she's the Avatar... Until she starts to realize that it's more a burden than privileged. Aang never really went through that.. In part because of his Air Temple upbringing made him more humble, if inexperienced in the world. And he was thrust into his responsibility a good number of years before Korra was. Nor was he doted on by everyone because he was the Avatar the way she grew up.

Storms take a while to form and, right now, I think that the studios have more immediate concerns (specifically the 'North Korea' thing). If there is an official backlash (or, at least, disclaimer/retraction), it will happen some time next year. For example, Korra may never be rerun by some stations.

The advertisers, who pay the networks' bills, who, in turn, commission content and distribute it. Boycotts happen and shows are cancelled or simply never produced as a result. Hosting companies are required to delete 'offensive' or 'illegal' files. Follow the money; always follow the money.

I'm not saying that there will be a grand backlash. Frankly this is too small fry to provoke something like that (this isn't exactly a prime-time show watched by hundreds of millions, after all). What I am saying, and have been saying from the start, is that it is too early and there are too many distractions to judge the long-term reaction to this particularly gutsy artistic decision on the part of Bryan and Mike (and I did like Bryan's blog post (http://bryankonietzko.tumblr.com/post/105916338157/korrasami-is-canon-you-can-celebrate-it-embrace) - he made a very good artistic justification that neatly disarmed all the political arguments).

There is always push-back to things like this but it's too early to say what form that this will take.
