Title: Whoa hey I know a dude on a reality TV programme
Post by: Ozymandias on 04 Aug 2010, 09:30
This dude (http://www.bravotv.com/top-chef-just-desserts/bio/seth-caro)

Good pastry chef, fairly decent dude, sometimes bit of a dick. I don't really know what purpose this thread serves now but hey that is cool to me.

One of my friends taught some America's Next Top Model contestants how to indoor skydive.

Sorry about how Mr. Caro got portrayed as dangerously bi-polar.

One of my friends was apparently on a Project Runway farm team, or something. She may yet end up on the show. She could use the exposure, she's a fucking fantastic designer.

One of the girls I did theatre with in high school nearly won the Aussie Next Top Model.

This is awesome, me and my girlfriend are currently watching the series here, we're as far as the final 8 and Jonathan is one of our favourites! (Unfortunately I accidentally found out who won in the end but yeah, loved him!)

My childhood neighbour was on the first season of Canadian Idol. The one with the dude from Hedley.

My parents used to work with that guy Jimmy who was on Australian Masterchef. Apparently he is a pathological liar and said all that shit about being bisexual to get on the show. His fiancee is not pleased with him.

One of the guys I work with is trying out for the next Australian Amazing Race. He's a cool dude so it would be fun to watch that.

Oh hey this is cool, Jonathan seemed like good people and was a pretty dang good cook to top it off.

Yeah, some of the guys at work still hang out with him.  He was basically doing part of my job when he was there, and my current boss apparently gave him a hearty push toward it one time when he mentioned wanting to apply for it.  Apparently also all the shit about him "not really being like that" and "it's all crap made up for ratings" probably isn't the case, as he was a bit of a drama queen at work, too.

Man I was not a huge fan of Jonathan.

A friend of mine from uni is on the current season of Australian Beauty and the Geek (the astronomer guy with the long hair that apparently gets cut off on tonight's episode). I already knew that it was all put on and cut for effect but it's hilarious to see just how much that's the case.

The closest I get to this is that I occasionally go to trivia with the sister of the last Bachelorette.

Wasn't Patrick on a TV talent show thing?

Also one of the kids I went to middle school with was on the American Wife Swap show. It's funny seeing what facets of the family get suuuper over-emphasized for that.

I always though American Wife Swap was completely scripted - am I overly cynical?

My littlesister's ex-boyfriend's sister was a contestant on Top Model Norway.

Also the principal of my school in middle school was once called up by the contestant in a Norwegian version of "Who wants to be a millionaire".

And it really saddens me that I remember these things.

From what I've seen, it's not that it's scripted as in "written out in advance". It's more that they pick the craziest/most extremely opinionated people they can find, then only show the footage that displays certain character traits in those people.

What constantly amazes me in the video work that I'm doing, and it's pretty basic interview/music/background footage mostly, is how absolutely powerful editing can be in shaping the narrative. So it's no surprise to me that reality shows can get whatever they need to create drama without having to manipulate the filming side of things.

Of course, that's part of it, too. Even without direct scripting, they know exactly how to create situations that provide the kinds of footage they can then use later to build the scenario they're looking for.

Actually something that's been really peeving me at the moment is the way a lot of reality series, typically the kinds of ones they have on Discovery Channel and such-like, do this really horrible hamfisted exposition at the start of the episode, where like the person at the office calls the exterminator/bounty hunter/astronomer/professional pigfucker/etc and explains the thing they have to do in the show and because they aren't professional actors, it's stilted and really obviously for the benefit of the cameras.

Related: Any time a home-improvement show "surprises" a family at their home by going up and knocking on the door.

Has anyone seen the Sarah Palin Show? ( I forget the name but that makes it sound like a sitcom eh?)

It's Sarah Palin's* Alaska. She has the ugliest house, inside and out.
