Title: Xom is amused by your misery - Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup 0.7
Post by: SirJuggles on 22 Sep 2010, 00:51
So I was gonna necro the old thread for this game, but I realized it's more than a year old and guess what bitches THERE'S BEEN LIKE 4 VERSION UPDATES SINCE THEN.

So we're up to version 0.7.whatever (https://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/downloads) now, and things have come a long way since you bastards first introduced me to this time-sucker of a game. The tile version is much improved, we've got new classes and gods and all kinds of crazy shit up in here.

For those of you who don't know, the original thread is over here (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,22040.0.html), wherein Trollstormur gives some good advice for new players. We also have the official wiki (http://crawl.chaosforge.org/index.php?title=CrawlWiki) for the game, which has proven to be an invaluable help when I want to know who the hell Erica is and why my character is now in three burning, poisoned pieces scattered around the room.

Some of the features in the new version are pretty cool. The arena mode is fun to play around with (royal jelly v royal jelly LET THE GAMES BEGIN). But what I've become addicted to is the new Dungeon Sprint mode, an ascended mod wherein you are put into a pre-made, 1-level dungeon and everything is turned up to 11. I almost named this thread FUCKING POLAR BEARS because the Keep of Menkaure level hates me.

I've been playing the shit out of this again, but my last death was pretty discouraging. I had a pretty studly naga wizard that was set up to go the distance but he got shafted, literally. Didn't even have time to try even a quarter of his escape tactics.

Oh yeah, 7 is the shit. The new tiles look awesome, espescially the enemies.

Also, Demonspawn are much more fun to play now that they sort of overhauled how their mutations work. Demonspawn has always been my race of choice and 7 did nothing to discourage that.

I'll admit I've never been very good at this game, and most of the time I'll get smited by an orc priest or something around level 4. Last night though, I booted up a Troll Berserker and GOOD LORD do those things rape. Going berserk is pretty much the Master Key to any problem, and later on Trog lets you bring in "Brothers in Arms" which are usually giant raging two-headed trolls so ef-yeah.

Also, I happened to have one of the greatest moments ever happen with that Troll (no screenshot because Print Screen doesn't seem to like the new version). Basically I turned a corner into a room with a little cluster of some orcs, a hound zombie, and this Named human named Joseph who started shooting exploding sling bullets at me. Thinking quick, I decided to try out my new Wand of Enslavement to see if I could distract them while I closed the distance. Thing is, the same turn that I enslaved the hound zombie, Joseph took another shot with his explodey-bullets. But he had been standing with this cluster of enemies on the other side of the room, and that zombie happened to be directly in his line of fire:

Code: [Select]
The hound zombie is charmed, this wand has 6 charges left.
Joseph shoots an exploding sling bullet.
The exploding sling bullet hits your hound zombie.
The exploding sling bullet explodes!
The explosion of sling bullet fragments engulf your hound zombie.
The explosion of sling bullet fragments engulfs the orc.
The orc dies!
The explosion of sling bullet fragments engulfs the orc warrior.
The explosion of sling bullet fragments engulfs the orc.
The orc dies!
The explosion of sling bullet fragments engulfs Joseph

I've never been particularly fond of melee guys, but only because it seems like every time I roll one I get randomly murdered by some critter that turned out to be packing a dagger of distortion. The first time I played a demonspawn I was sent straight to oblivion by the first kobold I met because it had a whip of holy wrath.

Anyway, Mottled Draconian Wizard>All.

I say this because I have a mottled draconian right now and he's level 8 and already knows Mephitic Cloud, Spammals, Repel Missiles, Swiftness, Pass Wall and Blink. So, basically, he's like Harry Houdini, only if Houdini breathed napalm.

I always like Kobold Pyromancers and Venom Mages. Not because they were good or anything, just because the image I have of them in my head is so awesome.

So there are a bunch of new gods with this update.

Cheibriados is the god of being slow. He's the only new god I've been able to play around with, but he's loads of fun (Though you won't get as much out of him with a Spriggan or Centaur). He likes it when you kill things that are faster than you and when you eat when you're already full, but he dislikes it when you speed yourself up or use magically fast weapons. He lets you make your armor "ponderous" which makes you even more slow but makes the armor better, and he shields you from negative energy and increases your attributes when you wear ponderous armor. He also lets you slow your enemies and your metabolism. Neat!

Fedhas is a god of plants. Haven't had a chance to play him yet (despite trying desperately to sprint down to the temple with various spriggan characters), but when I first encountered his temple it told me that he likes decay and fungus and whatnot. He sounds like a lot of creepy fun.

Also I guess there's a slime god now but I haven't been able to get to the slime pits and he's not in the temple.

Cheibriados is roughly tied with Sif as my favorite god for Transmuters now. For one thing, Transmuters are basically hybrid caster/unarmed guys by default, and full Ponderous effect gives a big chunk of every stat rather than catering to specialists-- Anyone who depends more on weapons would probably get more out of Okawaru and casters would love Vehumet, but for a true hybrid with blade hands Chei is sexy. The other sweet thing is that he disapproves of haste effects but doesn't mind if you shapechange into a form with a faster base speed. So if you're toddling around in Ponderous armor and realize you'd rather fight the big uglies somewhere else, you can always just go to Spider Form and leg it. You'll lose out on AC and stats but gain a slight movement bonus for being a Spider. It saved my ass a few times since I couldn't get a hold of a controlled teleport item to save my life. This weekend I'm probably going to run a transmuter that starts off worshipping Sif but swaps to Chei after nabbing a free book or two and forgetting some spells.

I really like Fedhas, especially with Spriggans and other non-meat-eaters since you can devote every corpse you make to "contributing to the ecosystem"
Being able to move and fire missles freely through plants is pretty handy sometimes too.

Still haven't even encountered the slime god yet.

Jivya's altar is in the Slime Pits and is ridiculously awesome.

Oh my god, I got the message, "Fedhas appreciates your contribution to the ecosystem" when I died. That's amazing.

Oh also I have to emphasize, if you're going to worship Jivya, don't kill the royal jelly or else Jivya dies too.

And you really should worship the great and powerful slime. It is seriously badass as hell. There's some great mutations you can only get from Jivya, and high piety lets you remove bad ones at will.

He likes to shuffle your stats so that your highest one is whatever you've chosen on level, so you can do things like start out as a kobold with an emphasis on Dexterity or Strength and then once you worship Jiyva transition to being a caster and get your stat shuffled to Intelligence. The reason I mention kobolds is they get a bonus to either Strength of Dexterity per every 5 levels. You can also theoretically do this to create a super intelligent troll, but their spellcasting aptitudes really suck and it'd take considerably more prep than with say, a Kobold Stalker.

Also, gaining piety with the dude isn't that hard. Make some slimes/turn your enemies into slimes and just let them go to town nomming everything.

So, I've been running a level 13 Merfolk Crusader around the first couple of levels of the Lair and I'm already having a shitty time of it 'cuz my gear sucks, I've got a nasty Intelligence penalty mutation, there's been uniques & out of depths all over this fuckin' dungeon (Already had to deal with Menkaure, an Unseen Horror, some Demonic Crawlers (fucking vault), Prince Ribbit AND 2 player ghosts)  so my wands are already tapped dry and I can't even find a fuckin' buckler. Even worse, there's like a million god damn killer bees (AAAH THE BEES) on the next level down (and I don't have poison resistance D:). So I'm thinking "Man, I want to bail to the Orcish Mines for a couple levels, but this +1+2 (only because I enchanted the damn thing) Trident of Fail just won't do it."

Then I found this:

Which made me feel like this:

Now, I've had better randarts before, but the timing on this find was ridiculous. 3 resistances and no drawbacks. I'll take it.

Addendum: Apparently I can now already one shot orc warriors without buffs.

Right now I can combine Condensation Shield, Divine Shield and Ocozubu's Armor for a defensive stat line of AC:22, EV:32, SH: 27 while wielding a randart 6/6 battleaxe of Speed and I have the teleport control mutation. If I manage to get this guy killed I should probably just quit playing crawl entirely.

I fucking jinxed myself so hard there. Some douchey skeleton with a distortion weapon just banished me to the abyss. I guess that's what I get for bragging on my crusader. I figured it'd take longer than 5 minutes for me to regret this post though.

Whoooooooooa, I found a necronomicon on Lair: 4. I thought that was one of the super hard to find books. Whooo, my Yellow Draconian Transmuter will take it!

I do seem to have a tendency to find super-advanced spellbooks with non-casting characters. It is frustration.

So my current run is a Kobold ChsKnight, just because I've fallen in love with Makhleb and am pretty much playing every race with him. I made it a few levels into the Orc Mines when I ran into a Named enchantress by the name of Kirke, who happened to be heralded by a swarm of Hogs, which I had never seen before. I SHOULD have recalled my Greek mythology classes, but I did not, so I was completely taken by surprise when she cast Porkalator (http://crawl.chaosforge.org/index.php?title=Porkalator) on me. And turned me into a pig  :psyduck:

It actually got better after that. I freaked out and cast Lesser Servant of Makhleb, which spawned a Ynoxinul. She then cast Porkinator on the demon... causing it to turn into a Hell Hog. Which proceeded to eat her.  [PsyduckDealWithIt.gif]
