Title: a bit of help please?
Post by: orangepeas on 23 Sep 2010, 02:43
So, there is this girl that I fancy. She's intelligent, super cute and stuff. She already has pretty good taste in music too.

I want to make her a mix cd.
What are some good songs that would make her swoon?

thanks,

You've got to give us a little bit more info, chuckles.

I've got mixes which will have you cornered, fighting off adoring females with a chair and a bullwhip but they'd probably be wasted on a girl who only likes IDM.

What's she like, what kind of music does she like?

Rule 1: if you're making a mix you have to include at least one song from 69 Love Songs by the Magnetic Fields.

It's the law.

Choosing a song from 69 Love Songs is very hard, as most of them are completely inappropiate for most mixes.

'Grand Canyon' is a decent shout. But it's gotta be in context with the rest of the mix really.

you mean the song that says "I am sorry that I am not good enough for you even though I once was"?

Perhaps Safe and Sound by Hawksley Workman.  Or The Rain Song by Led Zeppelin (that's what I'm listening to right now and it strikes me as a good one, anyway).

I think you meant to say that most mixes are completely inappropriate for 69 Love Songs.

69 Love Songs in never wrong.

Seriously though there are a few outright happy love songs on there: "A Chicken With Its Head Cut Off" (though the line about "my wife doesn't understand me" might confuse the girl you're doing the mix for if she's super-attentive to lyrics), "The Book of Love" (though the last line is a marriage proposal - too soon, perhaps?), "Nothing Matters When We're Dancing". Probably a few more on the discs 2 and 3 but I don't listen to those as much.

Okay,
well she's in university, likes Iron and Wine and Tegan and Sara and is slightly taller then me. The last one doesn't really matter though.

you wish it didn't matter (i kid).

some song by okkervil river is probably a good bet.

I was going to suggest some Frightened Rabbit but then I listened to their lyrics properly and they're all about heart-ache and break-ups so maybe not.

It's true, nothing says "When we inevitably break it will damn near destroy me, but I'll survive thanks to the emotional scar tissue I will have built up by then thanks to the acute pyschic damage I accrued from every exquisitely painful minute of our co-dependant relationship" like an Okkervil River song.

Yes. It shows humility.

Eligible, not too stupid
Intelligiable, and cute as cupid
Knowledgeable, but not always right
Salvageable, and free for the night

You really ought to listen to 2 and 3 again though. Though not as consistent as 1 they have the best songs.

Yes. It shows humility.

I
I am pretty sure that a song that is recriminating an existing lover for being unable to be a good match is a good song to be on a mix for a girl you are interested in.

"Monkey & Bear" by Joanna Newsom

that song is sort of about love....but also about forcing your loved one to dance for change so you can eat and not work, and then when she finally takes a bath in a cave and gets clean you tell her she is a filthy animal and smells bad. then she...transforms from a bear to a human?....or something. I don't know what happens at the end of that song

...actually...maybe don't use that one

Some City and Colour to impress the girlies. "The Girl" is probably a good start.

Hermann Loves Pauline (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSNWgx2i_qE)

It's a love song about Einstein's parents.  It has one of most awesome, infectious choruses of all time.
