Title: Sharks! On Fire!
Post by: Tarkus on 14 Nov 2010, 15:46
I just went to see these guys last night with my girlfriend (who recently became their manager). I thought they were pretty good and you guys might like to take a listen. They're from Kamloops, BC  and they've been together almost 2 years now, have 2 albums (I think) and couple EP's.

I'm still new here so if you guys don't think I should be posting this, just let me know.

i mean if you wanna show us a band, it usually helps when they're good.

I don't mean to sound rude but did you listen to the other songs on there?

I went into this with an open mind but my goodness does that drummer need a metronome or something

They do know a synthesizer is supposed to be used on top of actual playing, right?

I actually liked it but kinda have to agree the drummer seems to be doing his own thing. Kinda throws you off at points.

I liked the synth but the drummer sucks dick and the vocals (and lyrics) are just appalling.

Probably would have been a little into this if I had seen them open for the Junior Varsity in 2002 or something, but I think at this point in the game it couldn't even qualify as a "very, very guilty pleasure."

It's a little unfortunate that the artwork they chose for a song entitled "Air Combat" seems to resemble the World Trade Center.

It was okay until I realised there was a drummer.

Weird that bands like Warpaint can have a songcalled Warpaint and be perfectly fine, yet SOF have to explain on their website that the song isn't actually about them. Eh?

If I was to point out a flaw other than drumming, the synth is pretty much horribly overused. Drowns out the guitar. I'm not a music critic, and appreciate the sharing of music, but its just not really well layered or produced.

re:this band
i've got the Orange Julius...let's pick up some sweet shoes at footlocker and grab the new 'Shartz for Liarz!' album at Hot Topic/Spencer's/Stoney's Alternagifts

I had to google every part of this except Hot Topic, now I am horribly confused. Footlocker are trying to sell me the Reebok Reezig. Apparently it is 'an energy drink for my feet'.

I can literally think of no more horrible way to advertise a product that doesn't involve like Ukrainian underage rape porn or something.

You haven't seen the ads yet, have you.

Christ. I am so sick of Peyton Manning on my TV doing commercials. Stop being a corporate whore and throw more interceptions.

The Yellowcard/Owl City thing going on isn't really what I (and I think most people here) tend to listen to.  But, I'm going to have to second the need to tone down the synth.  It started to give me a headache about 4 songs in. ( and I like noise)

Holy cow, guys, from the comments I was expecting someone's middle school band YouTube videos or something. This has some energy and polish to it. I wouldn't sit through an entire album of it, but that's taste.

Sean you are usually a pretty cool guy but that seems a little overly dickish to me. I mean, the original poster came in here pretty politely just wanting to share something, it doesn't seem like criticizing the name like that is particularly constructive.

Honestly the synth being louder than everything else doesn't really appeal to me but it's really a taste thing. What is not a taste thing however, is that the drummer really needs to practice his drumming.

Nah, not being a dick is pretty easy and just a good thing to do.

That said, the drummer needs some serious work. The timing overall was pretty damn sloppy for how condensed and polished it's trying to sound, and that much of that synth sound is just way too much. The band name is kind of obnoxious, but I've been in some stupidly named bands myself so I tried not to hold that against them.

Your girlfriend would probably be better off attaching herself to a higher quality project in the future. Can't tell if it's just a problem from amateur recording or if they're really that sloppy, but it doesn't sound tight at all.
