I don't need hair gel. I am not even itchy, but I do feel a little dirty. I don't even smell bad and I haven't even worn deodorant in like a week.

I do this occasionally. Especially in the winter and especially when I don't go to the gym (I shower at the gym a lot). It's pretty bad when you suddenly realise what that smell is.

During the summer, on the days I'm not doing anything and don't have anything the next day, I don't shower either. I like to think it's because I'm doing too much to slow down and shower, but it's probably because I am lazy.

Except for a tiny little section of the year (about 5 til 7 pm on June 23rd) it is never warm enough here to sweat particularly much. That said, not showering for anything more than 2 days straight sets off all sorts of paranoia re: flesh-eating bacteria for me!
I'd like to say my good bodily hygiene was down to a healthy sense of self-respect, but no, it is more the FEAR (of tiny creatures living in my skin ewwww).

part of it (for me anyway) is having short hair, which gets less visibly greasy when you don't shower. i mean it still gets pretty greasy but not in the same obvious gunky way as long hair. i got so stupid excited about this when i first cut off all my hair and it remains one of the primary reasons why i probably won't grow it back anytime soon.
anyway i used to be a filthy disgrace like jace but now i shower just about constantly, although to be honest it think it has less to do with hygiene and more to do with the fact that it gives me something to do other than work on papers. wasting water is the best way to procrastinate, the first world way.

That is likely because your hair's natural oils take care of it better than when you strip them out and leave nothing else in it. I think most people don't actually need shampoo, at least not every day.

Actually I saw in some documentary about pageants that the Miss Universe contestants etc don't shower their hair the day of the contest since it's easier to style then.
I guess it all depends on what kind of hair you have though. Mine's typical nordic hair so its superfine, so if I don't shower it gets really greasy really fast.
Btw have you seen those "dry shampoo" spray-on they have now? Supposed to dry out the grease or something like it. Im skeptic. Very skeptic.

The only experience I've had with dry shampoo is that it makes your hair really itchy and greasy. I'm not a fan.

I've been about six days without showering - in the last play I did, both myself and my assistant admitted that we hadn't showered since Saturday, and it was now Wednesday. She showered the next morning but I didn't have time until the next day. It wasn't a huge problem, my hair smelt a little unclean but not unpleasant and I washed at the sink.
I think some people, e.g. my brother, shower compulsively every morning and then get really unused to their own skin so if they're staying somewhere overnight it's uncomfortable not to shower. I'd far rather have an extra half hour in bed than be that clean every morning (but if I'm going out somewhere posh or likely to end up going back with someone, I will shower in the evening).

physical activity is a big part of it too, i mean i exercise pretty much every day so there is absolutely no way i can get away without showering and i imagine people who do things like bike to work or run around all day probably have similar feelings but for a person with a relatively sedentary lifestyle who gets to spend most of their day in a nice cool setting i imagine going a few days without a shower is not really that big a deal? i doubt i'd notice either.

My hair starts to clump when I don't wash it for more than 4 days. (I was a dirty teenager.) If I wanted dreds, that'd be a good thing, but I don't want them, so yeah. Also I honestly can't stand going more than 2 days without a shower. I mean, I usually shower every 2 days anyways, but I feel nasty the day I take my shower. I rarely use body wash, though, unless my skin is really dry (I've got the dry skin relief kind) or I worked out.

Sometimes I bath once a week, I am a pretty sweaty lady so sometimes it means I smell pretty strongly but I like the way I smell, and so do the people that are gettin' intimate and physical with my body, so I don't really care. My hair looks STUPID when it's clean, it's sooo poofy. Lately I've been washing every two or three days though cause I'm running around a lot.

Most i've gone is 23 days without a proper shower. When we are in the field and there isnt any shower facilities all we are left with are baby wipes. It helps but usually just makes the dust and dirt cling to you worse.

When I first moved out I'd routinely go four or five days without bathing because I was just so busy but then I got into the whole shaving thing and I was doing that every day so that made me shower every day too, and I just forced myself to make time for it. The problem is, I generally don't notice if I stink- but other people do. Also I was really happy when I cut my hair short because I went from having to shampoo every 2-3 days to being able to go months without having to wash my hair.

When I wash my hair I tend to use mainly conditioner. I've been going on one thing of shampoo for about 6 months now, I don't think it's less than half full.

How do you do six days? When I'm not leaving the house for a few days and I'm focusing on homework, I can go a few days only leaving the computer for food, but not that long.

every time you wash your hair, you strip it of its natural oils. the more you wash it, the more oil it produces to compensate. subsequently, the less you wash it, the less oily it will eventually become. that's usually the reasoning behind why most people who say they wash their hair every single day "have to" because it'll become unbearably greasy if they don't - well, of course it will, because you're washing it every single day! try using water and just a little bit of soap once in a while instead and see what happens, you'll feel gross at first but you might really be surprised by how naturally soft and shiny your hair eventually ends up being once it sorts itself out. your body's natural oils also operate on a pretty similar set of instructions but again, i exercise just about every day and the stench of my sweaty armpits could feasibly be bottled and used as a chemical weapon so i don't think any amount of not showering could possibly lead to some sort of natural equilibrium for me.

Thirdly, I have to use extra strong paint strpper type shampoo to combat the eczema on my scalp. I wash my hair every other day and that seems to get it just about right. My boss, who has dreadlocks, has not washed (or cut) his hair in twenty-one years.

I sweat while I sleep. Some mornings I wake up and I've practically sweated through my shirt. I need to shower after that.

Sometimes I go out onto the grass that they've got here, outside the house. And I stand there, often for days at a time, until there's a particularly heavy bit of rain. And when this happens I go to where the grass is thinnest and I scuff it up loads and mae it all muddy. Then I roll around in it and rub my face in it and sometimes even sort of stick some of the mud down my pants.
I need to shower after that.

Yeah I showered, but mostly I just start doing stuff, and then I never get up more than 30 minutes before work, and it takes me 25 minutes to get to work. And when I get home it is like midnight so I don't want to shower.
Also, I went about 5 months without using shampoo on my hair, but then I started to get really bad dandruff so I had to get anti-dandruff shampoo.

I don't really need to wash my hair for like 4 days at a time. The rest of my body gets a pretty thorough scrubdown at least once every two days though. Otherwise, my B.O. situation is similar to what Tania described for herself. I'm fairly certain it will cause permanent damage to eyes and nostrils.

I realised another important reason to shower, especially if you are planning on sharing kisses and such with a smooth-faced person, and hold the capabilities to make beard - and that is beard conditioning! I have quite a tough, thick beard, so I generally use a tea tree, mint, and witch hazel face scrub (which strengthens, softens and encourages growth - important to remember if you are a first-time beard-grower!) and then leave conditioner in my beard for at least two minutes. If I don't do this, it gets itchy and sharp like steel wool. Not a nice thing to share kisses with.

Happily, I inherited my father's ridiculously thick, greasy hair and disgusting body odor. Believe me, I have tried washing my hair every two or three days. I barely washed it at all when I was a teenager. But it gets so absolutely disgusting that I feel I've dipped my entire head in a vat of rancid oil. So!
I wash, blowdry, straighten and curl my hair every single day. I take good care of it so it doesn't get stripped and dry. Sometimes I shower twice a day, because night time showers are so good.

I've been working on a farm for the past seven months, and I don't shower more than once a week. I kinda like the way I smell, up to a point.
But then, in high school (and who am I kidding, in college too) there were definitely stretches where I did the same.
I wouldn't say I have many friends.
And they don't understand me.
I am married, though. So, go figure.

Man, when I worked at Papa John's I couldn't wait to shower because smelling like a pizza joint when outside of said pizza joint smells REALLY BAD. Like, I would enter my house through the laundry room, throw my uniform in the wash, and then immediately go shower because I reeked of peppers, onions, dough, etc. Ugh. Now I'm having flashbacks. Oh the horror.
But when I worked in a bakery/restaurant, I just smelled like cookies and cinnamon buns. That was ok. I smelled delicious.

Soap is bad for your hair! It is actually way worse than shampoo. Most conditioners nowadays have the same cleansing agents in them that shampoos do, but less of it. I think you can probably use this for any cleaning AND conditioning needs, sort of like a 2-in-1 except less terrible for you.
I shower every evening because showers make me sleepy and I use special salicylic acid stuff for acne because if I miss a day it gets awful. Also, I dance just about every day and I don't usually end up stinky after dancing, but if I leave it I will get stinky, so.

Oh God, definitely. Back when I was in a band, the rehearsal space we had was just down the road from a chicken processing plant. We rehearsed in the evening and usually finished up around 11pm or midnight, which is usually just as the delivery trucks are coming in. I had to hold my breath for a km in either direction driving past.

Also, Gemm is right. If you have greasy hair, you will probably have a harder time getting dreadlocks if you don't shampoo it than if you do, because oils* help your hairs slip past each other and de-tangle, and that is the antithesis of 'locks.
*Obviously not as well as conditioners like silicones and other things.

Shampoo alternative ... White vinegar rinse. Yeah you smell like vinegar, but your hair is shiny and soft.
I also can go for up to 2 days without showering, but I go 3 or 4 days without washing my hair. I just make sure to do the vinegar rinse every couple of days because I do get oily. I do tend to get BO like was mentioned before, but mostly just in the summer.

I shower after I go to the gym every day so when I skip the gym I skip the shower.
So since I didn't go to the gym Thursday or Friday this past week due to reasons, I was sitting in Harry Potter and the end was coming and then I realized I smell bad and then my mind was split between FUCK YOU BELLATRIX and OH NO I SMELL SO BAD and it was seriously stressful and then I went home and showered GOOD STORY THE END.

True, but not washing/showering for 6 days seems dirty enough thank you. Unless there is a ban on none essential water use/festival going is kind of a bit weird not to shower everyday, at least from my point of view.

Its not like you don't wash at all, you rinse your hair out thoroughly with water. Very simple.
Also, it is super easy to go without showering because I hang out alone in my room and only shower when I see my girlfriend or after practice, which is like once or twice a week. Sometimes I don't see her for a long stretch, so I just don't shower. I haven't washed my work uniform in like 2 weeks mostly due to laziness.

Yes! I actually do this (1 part vinegar to 7 or 8 parts water) like once every two weeks to restore the pH of my hair. It is terrible for coloured hair, and probably 'locks, now that I think about it, but really good for fixing moderate damage.

I shower about every other day or every day, depending on what I've been doing as far as exercise and stuff goes. I tried using some natural hair cleaning stuff (baking soda and then apple cider vinegar for rinsing), but even after a few weeks, it didn't really feel all that different, and it was a bit of a hassle using it, so I quit. I'm not a big "omg, evil chemicals"-person anyways, so as long as I can find a regular ol' shampoo I like, I'm alright with that.
But… How do you know that you don't smell? I mean, when we went to scout camps when I was younger, we would sometimes go for a week or even more without showering and no one really thought much of it (except that our hair got greasy), because no one had showered, so we were used to it. But it's kinda noticeable to people who aren't in the same situation. I mean, sure, if you stay in your room all day, then no problem, really, except that I'd personally feel filthy, but whatever floats your boat. But if around other people, I dunno, I feel like a minimum of personal hygiene should be upheld.

saves a lot of money, dude. just by going from showering every day to showering every other day you're already doubling the shelf life of your shampoo, conditioner, soap, etc. go from showering every two days to showering every four days and you double it again. i basically never have any money and coupled with the fact that my utility bill isn't included in my rent, it's a pretty powerful incentive for me in that it both saves me money on soap and shampoo and crap and also saves water. lately to cut costs i have also gotten into the habit of not flushing the toilet unless i poo (which isn't as gross as it sounds since i live alone and really just drink tea and water anyway) so maybe i am a dirty hippie too. maybe i was always a dirty hippie. maybe the hippie was inside me all along. who even knows

I think that most people's idea of minimum hygiene is like, a lot. I can understand not wanting to smell bad but, a lot of that comes from using things that affect the ph balance of your body, and having a poor diet. I dunno, I feel really weird about it because I get sorta freaked out by people smelling like raspberries and not like humans.

This. My whole life I've feigned liking perfumes whenever a female friend or relative has asked me for my opinion on one. They all just smell alcohol-y to me. I wonder if it's the same thing as when you first try wine and it all tastes yucky?

Three cheers for being a "dirty hippie"! ... I identify with the hippie part, but not insomuch as the dirty. Though I shower every other day, I still do the whole washing of the private parts to prevent female issues and smells. My hair and skin have opposite reactions ... Showering daily dries my skin out to the point of cracking within a week; the pH balance in my hair gets wacky and dries, so to fight the drying, it gets oily.
I also have very short hair, so not washing it for 3 days is actually ok, with vinegar/water rinses and NOT sweating every day since it's NOT over 100 degrees anymore.
As for the whole perfumes-thing ... Most perfumes REALLY aggravate my allergies, but try colognes geared toward women, and if you like one that doesn't clog you up, just water it down. But one thing that works for me is the body sprays, or even the "linen sprays" they have at the dollar stores. Cheaper and they aren't as irritating to my allergies, plus they still smell really nice!

Oh hey ladies, how about shaving? As meticulous as I am abut bathing, I only shave once a week. I have really dark hair and it grows really fast but I just can't be bothered doing it more than that. Also if I use a safety razor I get heck of rashes, but I bought an electric razor two weeks ago and my rashes seem to be clearing up! Yay!

my legs are hairy enough that if i want them to be stubble-free i typically have to shave every day but lucky me, i never wear anything that shows my legs and i absolutely never get laid so i pretty much never have to shave my legs. i do it maybe three or four times a year. i would like to actually try wearing dresses and shorts and stuff this summer though now that i am in shape and don't completely despise my body so if i have the money to afford some fancy new clothes maybe i'll find it somewhere in me to stop being such a filthy hairy disgrace. we'll see.

Yeah I wore jeans basically every single day for the past five years or so, and saying to hell with shaving, but this year I have been branching out on weekends and wearing skirts, which involve shaved legs. TODAY, however, I am feeling very proud for wearing a skirt to work for the very first time! I have not shaved my legs in 4 days. It's cool. They're prickly as fuck but nobody's touching them at work and my boyfriend doesn't care.

i basically wear jeans every day and do the same now, i think i've always been kind of insecure about my weird freakish disproportionately giant muscle legs (they are ALWAYS like that i have no idea what the deal is) which is why i have avoided ever wearing anything but jeans for so long. lately though i have been doing really well with exercising and eating well and i think the feel-good chemicals from all this health are finally making their way into my brain because even though my legs are still just as weird and freaky and massive as ever, i am finding myself thinking less "oh geez oh man i need to make sure nobody sees my legs" and more like "hey man i am awesome and really pretty and i want to wear things that make me feel pretty, damnit". chances are by the time summer arrives and i have to actually get out and try on those things i will return back to my lame insecure self but on the other hand, maybe i'll finally get over it! then i could be a real adult and stuff. that would be cool.

Ever since my surgery ive been forced to take baths and soak the area. This lead me to an epiphany. Baths are friggin awesome!! I seriously think the last time i took one was when i was kid and i had completely forgotten how amazing they are. Best part is I now have the barracks to myself so the bathroom is all mine which means no worries about finding the errant hair from my dirt bag ex roommates. Life is good :-D

Tania that is exactly how I felt about my legs! They still look weird and freakish and my knees are so strange and I have stupid muscle definition in my calves and cellulite in my thighs and little red spots and veins everywhere and they're so pale they're purple but I want to wear skirts more, damn it, because they're quite refreshing in the springtime.
Also wearing jeans all of the time was giving me hella yeast infections. [/tmi]

Baths are wonderful. But, I kind of despise the idea of sitting in my own filth ... Because, if we look at it from a logical standpoint, we're merely sloughing the dirt off our bodies and INTO THE WATER WE'VE SUBMERGED OURSELVES IN. Blech. I do, however, take a nice relaxing bubble bath from time to time .. Promptly followed by a nice shower to make all the yickies go down the drain and OFF my body!
As for the shaving, I shave my pits with every shower, and my legs once a week. Though I'm a brunette, my leg hairs have begun to grown in lighter and thinner (thank-you pregnancy hormones!). 'Course, this change only occurred AFTER my daughter was born!

Yannow ... Now that you mention it, I did always wonder why the hell we shave our legs anyway. Most of my boyfriends always commented on the pointlessness (is that even a real word?) of shaving legs, and said they kinda liked it. But I never met a guy or gal who wanted a hairy pit. That's just stanky. Anyway, we should add the odd poll to get the legs-shaving take!

When I was eleven and in sixth grade, these two seventh-grade girls who stood behind me in the PE warmup lines spent one whole period talking about liking smooth-shaven legs and how they wished boys shaved. I stood tiny, shivering, and embarrassed in my gym shorts, sure that they were staring at and judging my scrawny, hairy legs (and maybe they were, because middle school girls are assholes).
I went home that day and asked my mom if I could start shaving my legs. Every time my legs start to get stubbly, I feel the red flush of shame bloom on my cheeks. I remember my cotton gym shorts. I remember the giggling girls behind me. So I pick up the razor again.

Smelling like humans has never been the most attractive feature of humanity. Especially as "humans" have frequently not bathed and washed for hundreds of years. The smell must have been horrific no matter how good a diet they had.
And I didn't use that much stuff whilst I was at uni, most of my shower gel was cheap or (if going out and wanting to smell extra good) stuff I got for Christmas or birthday, I made a bottle of that last until the following year pretty much. Maybe its because I have lived only at home or in a uni flat, but I've never thought that "lets go without showers" is a good idea, I'd sooner go without apple juice and drink water for a few months instead. And I'm sorry to say dude, but what the fuck can you be spending money on to not have enough to pull the chain? I mean you are presumably renting a place so you have a job, so you must have some money at the very least.

Yannow ... Now that you mention it, I did always wonder why the hell we shave our legs anyway. Most of my boyfriends always commented on the pointlessness (is that even a real word?) of shaving legs, and said they kinda liked it. But I never met a guy or gal who wanted a hairy pit. That's just stanky. Anyway, we should add the odd poll to get the legs-shaving take!
I'm kind of the opposite way, I honestly don't mind at all if a lady never shaves her armpits, and it definitely even suits certain people. It's not like if you did have hairy armpits they would get stinky, because you'd still be washing there. Most males have hairy armpits and most self-respecting males don't stink there. Alternately, I don't think there's any circumstances under which I'd find full-on hairy lady-legs attractive (stubble doesn't bother me). I do tell me girlfriend fairly often that it's entirely up to her if she wants to shave wherever she wants to shave and I have no problem at all if she's completely hair-covered, if that's what she wants, because she does complain about it every now and again. But she still keeps on shaving, so I guess that's that.

I just showered. I shaved my pits, but not my legs. Once it gets to All Pants Weather All The Time, I stop caring about my legs. But then again, according to last years NSNov on the forums, I do not have very hairy legs, so yeah.

I am a pretty hairy lady. I have full hair.
Personally, I get distressed the few times I shave my armpits, cause I think hairy armpits are sexy. Smooth legs CAN feel nice but mostly they feel like wax or something, then the next day they're prickly and sucky. So I guess I would probably wax my legs? But I am usually too poor to do that.
I might shower today? I have not decided.

I've dated a girl before with hairy legs and have to say I hated it. I know people get use to it but for some reason i just couldn't. Laying in bed and our legs touching was just a weird feeling and not something i found at all pleasant. I of course respect your right to do whatever you want with your body, but ya hairy legs just aren't my thing at all.

Shaving started in WWII when nylon and silk were rationed for military use. Previously women wore stockings, so no one cared if legs were hairy, but to create the illusion of stockings when they ran out, ladies started to shave, put face powder on for even colour, and draw lines up the back with eyeliner and rulers.
Also, baths are actually better at getting you clean than showers. You are not actually sitting in filthy water unless you have been rolling around in mud and it is now floating on the surface of your bath, and soaking deep-cleans better.

A small point here ... The whole baths-for-relaxation-NOT-clean thing is my personal opinion. I'm not gonna sit here and harp at people for taking baths rather than showers. Though, it is damn adorable when my daughter's in her bath. Re: armpits, someone just asked me about this and it looks like the ladies I've been with have been 50:50 with un-shaved legs/armpits versus not. Most recent lady offered to shave, I think my response was along the lines of 'I don't really care, whatever makes you happy in your body, maybe we can try it later and see our reactions'. Societal pressure on women to shave reinforces that women's bodies are imperfect and need fixing which is something I in no way wish to contribute to.

So I used to be on that "baths are not for getting clean" thing but I actually took a bath today because I have sore muscles and just generally feel shitty and I thought about it, but that "floating in yr own filth" thing is some bullshit. Like, I'm gonna assume y'all know how soap works, so as long as you are cleaning yrself with soap then the dirt is gonna bond to the soap and stay bonded, it's not gonna end up back on you. It's exactly the same principle as how yr clothes get clean and stay clean in a laundry machine, they're basically taking a bath and floating around in the same water as well. I think I'll be taking more baths from now on, baths rock (although they are kind of a waste of water)

I really like showers because they give me time to be utterly alone and free to think... With hot water running down my body! Even if it's for only a few minutes, it's great and therapeutic.

I have not had a real shower since I moved to Scotland. The shower head in the bathroom is broken (you can only get ice cold or boiling hot water from it, won't mix at all), so I have to sit in the tub and shower with a bucket. It's terrible, but I've found a technique for how to get clean at least. This has changed the way I wash myself rather drastically! I used to have a shower every morning, but now I've switched to every other evening. The thought of the bucket in the morning (while I wait for the bucket to fill up inbetween 'showers' it gets feeezing cold, and I'm all wet, it's terrible) is probably the worst thing in the world, so it's better to wait till the evening when I didn't just climb out from the warm and cozy bed. I just wish someone would fix it soon. Apparently this would be no biggie for a plumber, but seeing how the state of eveything else in this flat is (the windows are broken and have been promised to be fixed in over a year, nothing ever happens, and my ceiling lamp died a month back, still no word from the landlady) I doubt I'll have a proper shower in this flat ever.
Oh, and there is never enough hot water to fill the tub, so I can't have a bath either. I've tried several times! I can't wait to go home for Christmas and have a proper shower.

I shave under my arms every few days because once it gets past like a millimetre it itches like hell. I rarely if ever shave my legs and I don't think it matters a whole lot.
I definitely agree with the peer pressure thing, though. When I was at primary school, so the oldest I could have been was ten and I think I was younger (as in, definitely pre-pubescent), I got called a gorilla by another girl my age for not shaving my legs. I had a complex about it for ages but I care increasingly less now, except when I'm around girls who intimidate me for other reasons, at which point I become acutely conscious of my leg hair and try to cover it up. It has never been a problem in any other situation though; none of the people I've slept with have even noticed. One of my friend's boyfriend berates her if she hasn't shaved that day and I think that is appalling, and pretty symptomatic of their entire relationship actually.

I meant for modern eras. Just like other fads regarding physical beauty, it has cycled in and out of fashion multiple times. The Romans were big fans of underarm shaving and face shaving and short head hair, I know that for certain, and I think leg and pube shaving was a thing too. Greek athletes shaved, I think, because you are slipperier for wrestling and all that.
