Title: Guest appearances
Post by: Carl-E on 26 Nov 2010, 01:22
I've looked through the last 10 pages of threads (about a year and a half), and I couldn't find a thread dedicated to this topic - there were a few individual instances, but I thought there was a thread I could resurrect.  So maybe it's time to make one?

At any rate, check out what's selling at Shortpacked! (http://www.shortpacked.com/2010/comic/book-12/05-neww-2010-comics/prime/)

PC World gave those models a two-star rating - a "DO NOT BUY WILL CAUSE PHYSICAL DAMAGE" recommendation.

...And is that Jeph in the background of panel two?
Title: Re: Guest appearances
Post by: Carl-E on 26 Nov 2010, 07:08
Kinda short for Jeph, but it could be.  After all, Willis can only draw a certain number of people before he (http://www.itswalky.com/d/19970908.html) repeats (http://www.joyceandwalky.com/) himself (http://www.shortpacked.com/)...

Davan and Nancy of Something Positive, strip 511.
Amy and Shelley of Scary Go Round, strip 519.
Title: Re: Guest appearances
Post by: jwhouk on 26 Nov 2010, 16:17
Oh, there's MUCH more. Especially during the Speed Beer arc.

EDIT: Let's see if I can track these down...
(This list obviously does NOT include guest strips, by the way.)

Anyone who wants to help out with some of the others, feel free.

EDIT: I'm not entirely sure who Jeph was talking about in 1246. I still say the third panel looks more like Danielle and Randy...
Title: Re: Guest appearances
Post by: Carl-E on 27 Nov 2010, 18:24
Actually, I was thinking more the other way 'round, appearances by QC characters in other strips.

And I finally found the thread I meant to resurrect (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,23985.0.html).  I don't think there's a way to merge the two, though.

Kim from Dresden Codak was also on IRC with Pintsize and his AnthroPC friends, than tweeted at Marten about it.  Later, she and Hanners had a lengthy Twitter exchange.

Posted in the weekly thread, but it belongs in here!

Insane Yeti Squirrel - Hanners at coffee of doom being assoulted by a desperate cold person (http://www.insaneyetisquirrel.com/comic/baby-its-cold-outside)

Edit:  apparantly the woman with the cat hat is the comic's protagonist.

Sort of.

Post by: Olymander on 17 Dec 2010, 02:18
Looing at that, I can't tell if Hanners is delighted, or freaking out.  I'd argue for delighted, but that seems so un-Hanners-like.

Willis does one-off Shortpacked!s for TNI (http://toynewsi.com/news.php?catid=242&itemid=16968#).   Last panel, the guy on the left.  I still think it's Jeph - we've seen him before, see my previous Shortpacked! link.

Just posting to point out that the Vertigo comic 'House of Mystery' has a back up feature this month (I picked mine up yesterday) in which the character is watching a building collapse from inside Coffee of Doom and Marten and Faye are in panel on the sidewalk.  Gene Ha must be a fan.

Could you scan the panel for those of us without a nearby comic shop?  I'd love to see it...

Just in case you were wondering, small partial uses are not a copyright violation, so long as you also list the attribution (and you already did...)

I came across this page listing QC crossovers (http://www.dragoneers.com/crossovers/Questionable.html), which seems to fit in this thread.  It's largely old links (some dead), but has a few more recent updates, even this year.

Title: Re: Guest appearances
Post by: Carl-E on 06 Oct 2011, 07:13
OK, this one's a stretch...

Shortpacked has been in a coffeehouse for the last three days.  Today, we see a bit more of it - the wall color, the plant by the door, the chalkboard (http://www.shortpacked.com/2011/comic/book-13/04-remedial-adulthood/togo/)...

They've been in CoD before, too!
Title: Re: Guest appearances
Post by: Mr_Rose on 06 Oct 2011, 07:48
The Shortpacked! coffee house is called "Coffeeright Theft" BTW.
Title: Re: Guest appearances
Post by: wrwight on 06 Oct 2011, 08:27
random comment about that comic: I love the perspective in the last panel. Anyway, yeah, I think CoD is a stretch, especially since his mug doesn't have a face on it.
Title: Re: Guest appearances
Post by: akronnick on 06 Oct 2011, 14:13
That's almost 100% CoD.
Title: Re: Guest appearances
Post by: pwhodges on 06 Oct 2011, 15:02
There's a comic with Marten, Faye and Dora in Coffeeright Theft (http://www.shortpacked.com/2006/comic/book-2-pulls-the-drama-tag/06-the-drama-tag/groundhog/); I think it's a version of CoD myself.  There's a blackboard (even though unused), and the walls are the right colour.  And the line: "We pay extra to be hated"!
Title: Re: Guest appearances
Post by: wrwight on 06 Oct 2011, 21:16
hmm, interesting. I didn't read Shortpacked back then (and still haven't gone back to read the archives). I suppose it's likely that it's a tribute to CoD, just kind of an alternate universe version.
Title: Re: Guest appearances
Post by: Carl-E on 06 Oct 2011, 23:35
No, definitely CoD.  The next day, Amber complains about her Latte (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1550)..

Resurrected for the recent appearance of a Hannelore panel in another webcomic (QUILTBAG (http://www.pennyandaggie.com/index.php?p=1280), formerly Penny & Aggie, originally noted in the WCDT (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,27717.msg1070506.html#msg1070506))
Title: Re: Guest appearances
Post by: Carl-E on 21 Mar 2012, 11:50
Resurected (again).  (Re-resurrected?  For this thread, re-re-re-resurrected!)

Jeph did a Weregeek guest strip today (http://www.weregeek.com/2012/03/21/).  He mentioned it in the newspost.

The guy far right in the last panel looks like Marten, but I'm pretty sure it's Jeph's take of one of Weregeek's protagonists.

You draw what you know, after all!

The cast over at Times Like This (http://timeslikethis.com/?id=531) are talking about a business that rents robotic bodies to people.  The author, Thomas Overbeck, says that part of his inspiration was this QC story arc. (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1012)
Title: Re: Guest appearances
Post by: jwhouk on 29 May 2012, 18:44
It would be strange if what Nicki mentions in that strip actually happens.

"Yeah, I came up with a robot VR thing for seniors and adults to play with so they can feel young again."

"Where'd you come up with the idea?"

"Oh, an old copy of Questionable Content Volume 4."

I'm not sure if Overbeck was aware, but a technology like this already exists, though it's quite basic at this stage. It's known as beaming (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-17905533).

Jeph's twitter reaction was sweet and amusing.

Ressurrection!

They're in the coffee shop again in today's Shortpacked (http://www.shortpacked.com/2012/comic/book-14/04-proposition-for-69k/proposition-2/).  Note especially the hair on the person behind the counter in the first panel, and the glasses behind the register.

As I did with the original "Hannelore goes to Korea" thread, I'm noting the quoted FANS! link is for their current strip.  This is the  permalink for the specific strip (http://www.faans.com/worse-than-the-disease-3-of-21/) that Hanners and Marigold appear in.

AAANNNNDDD, I just sifted through the better part of the 150-strip Quiltbag archive to find the permalink for this (http://quiltbag.keenspot.com/d/20111227.html).  Quiltbag is a spinoff, a separate storyline from Penny & Aggie proper.

Not quite a guest appearance, but close: Rosemary Mosco (http://birdandmoon.tumblr.com/post/68056011559/if-youre-looking-for-natural-science-themed) recommended the Yelling Bird whiteboard on her site:

If you’re looking for natural-science-themed holiday gifts, check out my TopatoCo store (http://www.topatoco.com/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=TO&Category_Code=ROMO), which is full of shirts, posters and other goodies.

Be sure to browse around TopatoCo, too because it’s packed with amazing work from all sorts of incredible, hilarious creators. I mean really, how could you go wrong with this dry erase board (http://www.topatoco.com/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=TO&Product_Code=QC-YELLINGBOARD&Category_Code=QC) that allows you to put words in the mouth of the noble Dickcissel, Spiza americana?
