I mean it is if you like Earth.

It's kinda cool.

(Okay honestly I wasn't sure whether or not to just make this thread or a "2011 in music" one. That would probably be better)

The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull is my favourite thing they've ever put out, and that makes me less of a pussy than anybody who bones out over Earth 2. Look into yr heart, you know it to be true. TBMHITLS is a monster of an album. If anything it is more about pure tone and the nasty sounds a guitar can make than straight drone stuff. It's really fascinating to start picking up the subtle nuance present in the way each run through the languid, repeating guitar lines is phrased, sometimes being allowed to feed back ever so slightly, now with vibrato, and so on. In other words, I am very much looking forward to this. The name-drop of Tinariwen is pretty interesting as well.

What? There are people who don't like "The Bees.."?.... That seems weird because in my social circles and also the metal forums that I'm into that album is worshiped.

New Earth > Old Earth tbh... I mean... I love both, but Earth 2 just can't win against albums like HEX or The Bees, also... I want to say that the new album's artwork SUCKS, there... I said it.

If this is going to be the 2011 music thread, Tom Fischer said in an interview (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yq7LV8JVj9s&list=ULxntf7J0RJtg&playnext=1) that he hopes to have the next Triptykon album recorded and released by the end of next year

Along the mainstream road, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Van Halen and Foo Fighters have new LPs out next year.

Personally I'm quite looking forward to the next Portugal. The Man record. 2011 shaping up to be a good year.

Portugal. The Man and I could get along if they'd just switch it up once in a while. Fuck man, I know they can groove it up hard, their early stuff is pretty rad! So why haven't they for the last couple of albums? Don't become Weezer so soon.

Personally I'm quite looking forward to the next Portugal. The Man record. 2011 shaping up to be a good year.

AGAIN? American Ghetto was pretty good, but come on. I have to admit though, it's pretty impressive that they're releasing stuff at this rate and that it's all been at least decent.

Really excited for the new Gorguts, This Will Destroy You, and Mogwai records, as well as the Kanye/Jay-Z collab. Also, I'm pretty sure we can expect records from Aphex Twin and and M83 in 2011, so I'm stoked about that.

Not really likely, but maybe Anata and Circle Takes the Square will finally release their stuff. I know with Anata, at least, it mainly had to do with label issues.

Yeah I have 55 albums by the Mountain Goats alone on my computer, not to mention all the related projects he's been involved with in recent years. The guy's damn prolific. I guess most of his music is pretty simple and doesn't demand a huge amount of production but still he's gotta write all those songs. Craziness.

2011: The return of post-rock?

Pretty much, I think. With two potentially amazing albums coming from Mogwai and This Will Destroy You, I think it could be a great year. I mean there have been some good ones in the past few years, but it's been a while since I heard a really good post-rock album.

Braids will be releasing their debut on January 20th. They have basically become my favourite band this year. Saw them live twice, and will be seeing them two other times in a month. They also recorded a Daytrotter Session. (http://www.daytrotter.com/dt/braids-pop-montreal-session-concert/20054401-110563.html) It's goddamn rad.

So Death Cab for Cutie is putting out another album this year. Plans really disappointed me after Transatlanticism, but Narrow Stairs kind of made me pay attention to them again. I think this album will decide whether I continue to pay attention to them or let them rot in the land of Bands About Which I No Longer Care. I know many of you already don't care, but I still cherish a secret, shameful hope.

Everybody: The new Decemberists record (find it in the MF thread) does not repeat DOES NOT suck. Breathe easy, download without fear.

I'll need to listen to it a couple of times more before I decide if it's actually good as such. But it don't suck. It's got a lot more country-influenced stuff (fiddles! pedal-steel! banjo! honky-tonk pianee!) and a heavy tip of the hat to "heartland"-style folk rock (Dylan/Tom Petty et al)

There's a new Go! Team album due in early February! Yay! They're streaming a song from it called "Buy Nothing Day" on their website and, surprise surprise, it sounds pretty much exactly like a Go! Team song. Frankly I wouldn't have it any other way: there are some bands I love to see develop their sound, but when a band's sound is as much fun as the Go! Team's I pretty much just want them to keep making one dense clattery jangly party track after another.

yeah the new Decembrists is ace, I'm really impressed/surprised that I like it so much.

I think I listened to the whole album like 3 times yesterday, and "Down By The Water" about 20.

It's incredible. "Rox In The Box" and the whole second half of the album are flawless.

Didn't they just release an album? Wasn't into the last one, but if it's Albini, who knows...

Tim Kinsella was raising funds for a Joan of Arc album to be produced by Steve Albini. Hopefully, this will actually happen.

Does the new Destroyer album confuse the fuck out of anyone else? Also I am jumping right back on the Decemberists bandwagon. The new album is pretty fantastic. Didn't know they could still folk out like that.

Still, most anticipated would have to be All Eternals Deck and a new Thermals side project called Forbidden Friend.

According to Wikipedia, Wire are releasing a new album January 11th

Since I heard Wire for the first time well, just now, that is really all I have to say about that

I've listened to it. It's good, but not on par with, say, Read & Burn 03 or Send. It's less the songwriting itself than the production... I'm really curious about the Strays EP, though. Especially "German Shepherds".

Apparently it's all about how Panda Bear was waiting for Avey Tare to release his solo record first, because he is a spiteful douchebag. He has released a few singles at this point.

Really any delay is fine by me, as it maximizes the time in which I don't have to hear about how AnCo is the most important and exciting band in music.

Anyway, I'd take Okkervil River over the Decemberists any day as far as my lit post-grad rock goes, but the last two albums really did very little for me despite the huge volume of jizz this forum blasted over them when they came out.

Mitochondrion's new album is very interesting.  They're Canadian death metal that I would place somewhere between Immolation and Portal (in terms of both how they sound and how good they are).  Because they are Canadian and it is their way, they tend to push the drums and vocals way far up in the mix and obscure the riffs, but it seems like for this new release they decided to be slightly less obtuse.  And I say slightly because the last three tracks are two ten-second bits of wooshing noises followed by a ten minute ambient outro

Really great death metal though.  Less for banging your head/punching nuns to, more for sitting in the dark and feeling very very small

Do you know what would've made "Walking Far From Home" better? Just letting the song be a song instead of a bleepy-bloopy gimmick. The fact that  "Walking Far From Home" doesn't suck gigantic ass (unlike the other tune on the single) is a testament to Sam Beam's skill as a crafter of melodies, not to his ill-advised new direction. It somehow managed to be good despite all attempts to fuck it up. I have a feeling most of the new material won't be so lucky.

Also I just wanna mention again that it feels pretty gratifying to have enjoyed that G-Side track. As much as I spend an awful lot of time being an insufferable cock about stuff on these boards I still derive more pleasure from getting jazzed about things that are good than shitting on things that are bad. I especially enjoy having my expectations subverted.

The whole record is in the M/F thread and the swag thread and it's pretty incredible in my opinion. The Slow Motion Soundz/Block Beataz Alabama scene is really awesome, the beats especially. I just love how spacey and disoriented the beats sound, spacey without being pointless like Lil' B gets sometimes, and still being able to go really hard from time to time.  Like this is the first record where the flow actually lives up to the incredible production that Block Beataz do. You should definitely check out the record if you liked the track.

i dunno, dude; there's something really virtuosic about, say, the abyss (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RUPaP2EUmQ) trilogy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6eeZO9zaAGw)?? like the idea of having a 3-song r&b suite that goes from wooshed-synth futurepop to like a fingersnap r&b Song About Fuckin to a downtempo minor key r&b lament with a hard beat where the transitions are so smooth that it might as well be one song, i feel that's some fine songwriting AND if you listened to the last couple of records you can kind of see a glimmer of it but you can't in any way expect the way that "sex intelligent" is followed seamlessly by the remix to "sex intelligent"

Yeah it has nothing to do with sounds and tempos. To my ears this shares a quality with a lot of chart rap (or at least chart rap from probably up to 5-10 years ago that I hear played a lot when I am in those sort of music situations) in that to me it is sort of listless. Perhaps it is because the artists are consciously trying to sound cool and above it but it seems to be lacking some sort of vaguely defined energy or passion which, were it present, would probably make me a lot more receptive to the music itself.

Another problem I have not particularly with that song but a lot of the other rap Kieffer posts is that I find it very hard to relate to the brash, almost arrogant level of self-confidence and nigh-on smug contentment many of the songs display. Like this is a general thing with pop music and in fact all music, not just rap. Like it seems a lot in the past that when pop songs talked about states of happiness they talked about yearning towards achieving them, regaining them, or about their imminent dissolution. There was often a bittersweet, humanising tone. At some point there seems to have been a cultural shift where, if by no means all then a large number of songs are simply about how great it is to be ensconsed in a state of happiness; how wonderful it is to be a rock star, to be rich, to be in love, to be respected, whatever. I find this hard to relate to not only because I struggle to find happiness in my own life but because such songs lack any dramatic tension which can make us like their protagonist, a pop singer after all being essentially a character or persona of a real person.

I am enjoying the new Starfucker.

Like, it's not Jupiter explosogasm poppy, but it's a lot more refined and sounds like it's been made by people who've thought about the music they're making instead of purely going "FUCK YES FUN"

what are you talking about dude, loads of bands from the seventies at the most recent were singing about how great their lives are. like you've heard a KISS song before haven't you? or skynyrd's "working for the mca" which is literally about how happy they are to be on a major label? i feel being somewhat alienated by the like constant self-aggrandizement in rap, that's something which like if you can't get past it as a listener it's going to be a huge stumbling block for your appreciation of a lot of artists

No I'm talking about what I like and why I like it. I used a hell of a lot of qualifiers in what I wrote, being careful to never state anything absolutely or make any pretence at objectivity. I said "Like it seems a lot...there was often...by no means all." Has your rejection of the accepted standards of written english caused a breakdown in your ability to read also?

Also even then it's worth noting that each of those bands most well known songs are in fact about desiring rather than having. It's "I wanna rock and roll all night" and "Sweet home Alabama, lord I'm coming home to you".

Also like I just realised that KISS are the 70's version of the Insane Clown Posse, like the comparison works on so many levels it's a bit scary.

The ICP guys at least seem to occasionally express an earnest appreciation for the fan base/community they've had a hand in creating, one that goes at least a li'l beyond liking money and notoriety. Gene Simmons, on the other hand, always seems to treat KISS as being all about him. Normally, that wouldn't bother me a whit-- the degree to which an artist decides to interact with their fans is a personal choice after all. But Simmons very much likes to posture as some kind of uber-capitalist alpha male, and I guess I just find it a bit unseemly on some level that he is so happy to talk about one of the most famously loyal fanbases like they're merely a collection of wallets and spread legs to plunder.

you were talking about music you relate to, but then arguing that a lot of pop songs of an undefined past period shared a lot of qualities that you find good in music, and arguing that these kids today ain't got that, and while i don't doubt that you've got a lot of pop music from the past that backs up your claim i think it's absurd to suggest that at any point that was the dominant tone, regardless of whether or not it's a subjective quality you appreciate in music. like whether you like it or not you set up an argument within a declaration of subjective taste. i wasn't arguing with your tastes; i was arguing against the argument.

and i really don't think that the use of "wanna" by KISS is about yearning, i think it's more a declaration of intent. i guess that's ~subjectivity~ for you but since most of KISS' catalogue is less about the frustration of desire than it is about its fulfillment i have to express serious doubts that a song about rock and rolling all night and partying every day is an outlier.

An email from the Explosions in the Sky mailing list:

Hi Everyone,

We're pleased to announce that our fifth album will be coming out this April.  It has six songs and its called Take Care, Take Care, Take Care.  It was recorded on a pecan ranch in West Texas by our good friend and frequent collaborator John Congleton.  Esteban Rey did the artwork.  The music on it feels different than anything else we've done before and we're very excited for you to hear it.

Anyway, here is the track list:

1. Last Known Surroundings

2. Human Qualities

3. Trembling Hands

4. Be Comfortable, Creature

5. Postcard from 1952

6. Let Me Back In

And here are the release dates:

UK (April 18th)

Europe (April 25th)

US and Canada (April 26th)

Thanks for caring and we hope to see a lot of you this year.

Love,
Explosions

So glad this doesn't suck nearly as much as Belus, DAMN that stuff was repetitive shit. If you're going to use the same riff for the entire song it better be a damn good riff like Hvis Lyset Tar Os or Filosofem, but Belus really failed at that.... Hopefully this will be better. The samples might promise a good change.

Early impressions of the new Burzum album, from someone who had only previously heard Hvis Lyset Tar Oss:

I obviously can't compare Fallen to other Burzum records, but it sounds in a way unlike any black metal I have heard before.  The riffs are pretty stock 2nd wave material (which doesn't necessarily mean bad), but the atmosphere this record carries is very interesting.  All of the surface elements of black metal are there, but the bile is completely absent.  This is black metal without ire, Satan, or fuck.  Hell, it's relaxing, all soft edges and pastel colours, much like the cover art.  You don't listen to this record in the middle of a forest during winter over a chalice of goat blood, it's for relaxing on a veranda on a warm spring morning with a cup of tea or some shit

I can't say yet as to whether I think this is a great record, or even a particularly good one, but props to Varg for making something that is somehow both quite like and quite unlike anything I have ever heard
Title: Re: Hey guys 2011 is a year with music too.

With Belus, I think you had a number of problems. For a start, Varg hadn't been in a recording studio or even touched a guitar for sixteen years. He was relearning his craft, probably working out some ideas that had been ticking over in his mind for a very long time; whether he should have released these efforts is another matter, but hey. Furthermore, Varg had (presumably) been almost completely isolated from music culture for a lot of that time; he spent a great deal of that period denouncing black metal and saying he would never play it again, remember, despite the fact that some of the interviews in which he described these views may be apocryphal; there are a number of Varg Vikernes interviews floating about that he has explicitly stated he never granted, and which contain glaring factual errors (one talks in the introduction about Vargs cell window overlooking a forest, despite him being at the time in a prison on an island in a cell which looked over the yard), and a number more which are suspect. Anyway, Belus to me smacked of a man who has been out of touch for a long time basically rehashing themes of his adolescent output, but without the vitality or relevance they had back then; after all, part of what makes Burzum such a touchstone is its huge influence on a range of traditional, atmospheric, pagan, depressive, ambient and so on black metal bands. With Fallen, it seems to me Varg is not only becoming more comfortable with the process of making music and trying out new ideas (Clean vocals!) but he also seems to be reconnecting with and listening to more music that came out whilst he was in prison. Probably not just black metal (Varg is known to have tastes that include electronica and Dead Can Dance), but there is a definite sense coming through in Fallen that Varg is now aware of developments in the folk/black/pagan/viking milieu, and is aiming towards developing an individual and distinctive voice again. There are moments of genius shining through once again on this album, I think, and memorable tracks. Jeg Faller is really nice.

What I personally think the music really needs is for the keyboard to come back, and slightly more adventurous song structuring. The keyboards could be used sparingly (I'm not quite suggesting he becomes Summoning) to provide flourishes and texture, whilst the songs could benefit from more sudden changes of direction, crescendos etc.

All in all, this album gets me excited for what the next one will sound like.

I agree with this part... For the Keyboards comment. I might agree if you mean keyboards a la Filosofem or Hvis Lyset Tar Oss.

Hopefully he will do better stuff in the future, Fallen seems to get my hopes a bit higher. It's hard to blame him from not being influential anymore since he was in prison for a long time... But unfortunately for him... The bands he inspired... His own legacy and devotees have surpassed him. If Belus did not have "Burzum" written on the cover, nobody would have given a damn.

that band has really mastered the art of "coming out with a new album at the precise moment i stopped caring and kind of forgot about them".

if it's anywhere near as good as Dear Science, i'll be so happy.  that was a really surprising album in terms of "massive jump in quality" and the live show for that tour was breathtaking.

This spring, Japanese fuzz-rock overlords Boris will pull a Guns N' Roses/Springsteen/Bright Eyes and release two albums on the same day. Outside of Japan, Sargent House will release the new albums Heavy Rocks and Attention Please on April 26.

Boris already released an album called Heavy Rocks in 2002, but this new Heavy Rocks is a completely different work, one destined to confuse record-keepers for years to come. The new one even has similar cover art to the last one. According to a press release, the band is bringing back the title because the new album "seeks to redefine 'heavy' music in a culmination of the band's tireless efforts over the past two decades." Makes perfect sense!

Attention Please, meanwhile, marks the first time guitarist Wata has sung lead on an entire Boris album.

OK so it's slightly confusing but Boris are actually releasing THREE LPs this year:

Heavy Rocks
Attention Please
, both out in April
and the Japanese-only New Album (that's actually what it's called) which is out in March, and you can stream a track called "Party Boy" from it here (http://soundcloud.com/qetic-1/partyboy-boris)

there's some songs that are shared between the three LPs, and some tracks shared between these albums and the "Japanese Heavy Rock Hits" 7 inchers they did two years ago, although the songs are completely reworked and different across the varying releases.

They're also doing the aforementioned collab with Merzbow, and Atsuo has a collaboration with Stephen O)))Malley called Uroboros Circuit which has been released already. Jeeeeez

Damn! That is confusing. 'Party Boy' is definitely on Attention Please but it's also apparently on New Album.

I wasn't sure how to feel about that track, but it's at least very different for them. This made me nervous until I found out that 2011 is the year Boris do everything.

I got the new P.J. Harvey album yesterday because it's been getting such glowing reviews, and I'm really torn on it. On the one hand everything about the music is fantastic: the melodies, the instrumentation, the orchestration. And I really admire the idea and ambition behind the album. But the lyrics so often let the songs down: too often they seem just juvenile, which is surprising and really disappointing from Harvey.

I'll probably keep listening to it, though, because oh that music.

The new FOUND album is pretty good http://www.clashmusic.com/feature/found-factorycraft

If you don't know FOUND, they're a band from Edinburgh who used to do a lot of experimental music, but have steadily been moving to a poppier sound, this album is pretty much the end result of that. They've also won a BAFTA for making a Cybraphon - an autonomous emotional robot band. Definitely check them out.

TPOBPAH have a song on the album where I was certain they were covering Just Like Honey, but then they could just be poking fun at comparisons? I don't know. The rest of the album is an absolute belter though.

40 Watt Sun (new band of the singer from Warning) have released their debut album The Inside Room.  It's epic, depressive doom, absolutely breathtaking.  I will likely put up the album in wink, cough sometime today, but for now here is a little taste (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IEvmtSxfuI)

Actually, another fantastic doom record has been released recently, SubRosa's No Hope For the Mighty Ones, on Profound Lore.  Short description is Ozzy-era Sabbath with lady vocalists and violin, but that doesn't really do justice to the strength and emotion of their arrangements (youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ivx1HrKqMpQ)).

New Pains album is awesome. All I've listened to lately is classic shoegaze and dream pop stuff, and it hit me that they're really one of the few bands that are still true to that sound. Not to say that they belong in that time period, because they still have a pretty modern sound, but it makes more sense to call them "dream pop" than half the shit people apply that and the "shoegaze" label to, nowadays.

A teaser for the new Appleseed cast EP, The Middle States. Not crazy about it, since I get a really Two Conversations-y vibe from it, but I love this band so it's okay.

Thirding new TWDY. AMAZING. A massive leap forward from their past work, which was already incredible. Uploading to M/F thread now!

Honestly, the best thing that both EITS and TWDY have done for their releases this year is to give subtlety and mysteriousness precedence over melodrama. Crescendos are fine but crescendo-core no more!

One of the best record I've heard this year is Reks - Rhythmatic Eternal King Supreme. Unless the new GZA comes out this year, I don't think a better hip-hop record will come out.

Akron/Family's new record is EASILY their best. All the best parts of their sound (soft folky, spazzy rock, spaced-out psych jams) perfected IMO.

That new Belong album is great! It's really nice and honestly quite refreshing to see such an obviously talented band go in a pretty new direction following an accomplished and well received first album. It would have been so simple for these guys to do the exact same thing all over again but instead they kept the core sound of their first intact but took it in whole new directions. And it works!

I am convinced that all post-rock is merely the grateful dead being upset that they can't find their stash.

I disagree.  If you're going to use any weed simile, post-rock is like that guy who has been going through some troubles and decides to smoke with some friends to take the edge off and ends up getting so wrapped up in himself and his problems that he wakes up the next day with his face in the freezer, with last night's tears frozen to his face.  And it is his sweetest memory.

huh who says? Mississippi Records ships records the whole world wide.
They don't really have a website or even a wikipedia article (taken down for "copyright infringement")

I mean I could write them a letter? But who knows if they'd get it and by the time that would be sorted out the Grouper stuff will be sold out, if it isn't already.

Nope, email warren at [email protected] to pre-order, ships early April

Sent an email to this to ask about ordering it and I never got a reply :(

Title: Re: Hey guys 2011 is a year with music too.
Post by: TheFuriousWombat on 29 Mar 2011, 12:15
They are indeed the only source. That's how distribution of some of her other records has worked in the past. As far as I know, no other distributors are getting this b/c there are such limited quantities although I guess that might change. Also, not getting a confirmation after sending money is standard with Mississippi, it's just one guy so you should assume he got the money and will send you your records. Warren's a good guy, no worries.

You know, speaking of, I'm still a bit bummed out. When they first announced this, I was really hoping it meant that Southern Lord would be doing the same thing they did for Amplifier Worship and Absolutego, putting out a really nicely packaged reissue of the 2002 version.

I don't think I've ever seen it on vinyl.

So a question for all my fellow pedants out there: How are you going to be tagging Boris' new Heavy Rocks album in yr iTunes/Winamp etc. to differentiate it from the 2002 Heavy Rocks?

I have the year in square brackets beside all the albums in my iTunes. So it'd be like "[2011] heavy rocks". Also, all of my tags in iTunes are lower case because I have been doing it like that for years and I can't stop now. Anyway, the square bracketed year thing gets a bit confusing when a band releases two albums in the same year, because sometimes they are out of order. Also, I sometimes feel like a loser that the earliest album on my iTunes is from 1967. I have come to terms with it.
Title: Re: Hey guys 2011 is a year with music too.
Post by: David_Dovey on 29 Mar 2011, 14:37
how comes you don't just use the year tag in iTunes. I have a feeling looking at yr library would infuriate me
Title: Re: Hey guys 2011 is a year with music too.
Post by: michaelicious on 29 Mar 2011, 14:53
Nah it actually looks really nice and consistent. Using the year tag makes the scroll bar pop up on the bottom of the the window. I can't abide by that.

shit, guys, Jenny Conlee has breast cancer:

Quote
The Decemberists | News 5.3.11

Adored Mailing List Recipients,

About a month ago, we all at Decemberists HQ got hit with some pretty hard news. Jenny Conlee, our since-the-very-beginning accordion and keyboard player and all-around rad person was diagnosed with breast cancer. If you or anyone in your world has been handed a similar diagnosis, you know what a bolt-out-of-the-blue this news can be.

The good news is that Jenny caught it early. And while the prognosis is very, very good for a full recovery, tackling the disease will mean some intensive treatment for our Jenny as well as a lot of important recovery time.

So I’m writing this to say that, weighing our options, and with Jenny’s fervent blessings, we’ve decided to go forward with our scheduled tour dates this spring and summer.

What we know now: Jenny will very likely miss all nine of our concerts in May and June.  We're all hoping that her recovery will be such that she'll be able to get back on board as soon as possible.

And now, a note from Jenny:

Hello to Everyone,

I am very sorry to say that I will be missing a few shows coming up as I go through treatment for breast cancer. It has been great to be on tour these past few weeks. The band and crew are like family to me and have been incredibly supportive and understanding. To be making music with everyone and seeing the fans has helped me to feel more positive and keep my mind off of my diagnosis. But, alas, as the tour winds down, it is time for me to get back to reality. I will try to get into surgery as soon as I can after we return from this leg of the tour so I can begin my recovery. There are still a few unknowns out there concerning my cancer, but I am thinking positive and hope to be back on the road soon. Thanks for all of your support!  See you soon!

Lots of love,
Jenny

Thanks for everyone’s understanding during this crazy time.

Yours,
Colin Meloy

Profound Lore really seem to know what is what when it comes to death metal.  I read in an interview they're releasing the debut album of a Canadian band called Antediluvian (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWgVHPepWhM).  The band's been releasing demos from 2006 to present day and have only gotten better over time, so I've got high hopes for the LP.  Easy description of their sound would be the atmosphere of Portal plus the ferocity of Blasphemy, which I doubt is any of y'all's thing but if it is let me know and I will put some of their stuff on *wink, cough*

Going back to Profound Lore, this July they are releasing an album by a new band called Disma, who I was not very interested in until I read it's made up of members of Funebrarum and former members of Incantation.  That right there is a recipe for goodness

Also, um, holy shit I guess the new Autopsy album is floating around out there

My friend Jo Warren who performs as sTiCkLiPs is a pretty frighteningly good songwriter. Her first album had a lot of cool instrumentation and electronics but she almost always performs solo with just a guitar which I think gives her music a bit more space. Anyway she's recently released a two song live recording for free on Bandcamp with two songs from her upcoming second album. People should really check it out: http://asarchives.bandcamp.com/album/sticklips-asarchives-session

here's a video of a different song for those interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgL9XsjzZNg

right?? She's also only 22. It's kind of unfair how talented some people are. You can buy her first album on Amazon and itunes for $5 I think. Or I could just put it up on M/F when I have a minute if anyone wants it.

i am so interested. damnit, i wish i could write songs like that. all i can ever come up with on guitar is silly noody-emo sounding riffs. welp.

OK I'll get on it. My friend Clemens also put out an album just the other day. Jo Warren provides backup vocals on two tracks. A pretty different sound (a bit more straight forward song structures for example) but it's really good as well: http://clemensknieper.bandcamp.com/

EDIT:

Here's the link to sTiCkLiPs "It is Like a Horse, It is Not Like Two Foxes." This came out a couple of years ago, all songs written by Jo Warren who plays guitar and sings, additional guitar and electronics by JP Nocera, percussion by Jim Bertini, and Chris St. Hillair on bass.

So it turns out Peste Noire released a new album a couple days ago, called L'Ordure à L'État Pur, and I somehow never knew about it until now.  Someone put the whole thing up on youtube in high quality and it sounds....very weird.  Famine is well-known for giving the finger to well, pretty much everyone, and it seems on this new album he's giving the finger to his more puritanically-minded fans

So I've been hearing more about fleet foxes whenever I use the internet. I finally checked their new album out and it is pretty damn awesome. I feel like cranking up the volume and dancing all across the room when I hear helplessness blues.

Also I have been kicking myself for the last month for not listening to the new She Wants Revenge and Taking Back Sunday albums. Listened to TBS's self titled album and I thought that it was pretty decent. A back to basics kinda albu to me in terms of vocals and overall sound. Then again, I just listened to the new album right before.

Overall, 2011 is a chill bro. The music is not so much " OH YEAH ROCK UT WITH YOUR COCK OUT!!!" kind of year but more of a "yeah whatever" kind of year

Not at all, sad to say. She played tons of shows, almost all just her and an acoustic guitar when we were both in school but other than the one album no other releases exist at the moment. Another album is in the works and due to come out at some point but a dear friend of hers and a major member of the band in early shows (he graduated our freshman or sophomore year - i forget which - so couldn't play with her at school much after that) and a major presence on the first album (he added all the interesting if not wholly necessary and occasionally even distracting if you ask me sonic elements) got very ill and then died during the recording so it's been a slow process. That being said, I've heard a bunch of new songs performed live and they're as good or better than what's currently officially released so that's a good sign. Thanks for sharing in any case! Whenever the new album comes out I'll be sharing it here and in the med!af!re thread

I'm still confused as to why they're selling the first third of their album for $8 and expecting people to buy it again in November along with the rest of it.  Unless I'm mistaken?

The song is pretty good, but it's very... I don't know; to me, it sounds like they might be trying to hard to be themselves.  It's hard to tell without context.

One thing I hate: People referring to albums as "CDs". No. That is just what the album is on. Maybe I should just start calling albums "vinyls".

Anyway, that is the new Polar Bear Club vinyl, and it is OUTFUCKINGSTANDING. Popped right into the #2 spot for my album of the year.

Ok, so I just found out that Fugazi (a great band, btw) will be slowly releasing recordings of every single live show they've ever played (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/26/arts/music/fugazi-live-series-a-post-punk-bands-archive-of-shows.html?_r=2&hp).  Starting on Dec 1, 130 shows will be put up on Ian Mackaye's Dischord Records (http://www.dischord.com/news/465/2011/11/fugazi-live-series-to-launch-december-1-2011-now-up-in-beta)' site and can be listened to/browsed through for free or be bought for a pay-what-you-want between $1 and $100
I'm pretty excited about this.  I just have to figure out how much I'm able/willing to pay.

(I found an ancient thread about Fugazi specifically where this would fit in, but it was really old and filled mostly with the Jurors who've moved on, I didn't think it would be too appropriate to resurrect that one, so I revived this one from a month ago instead)
