okay so this might be a bad thread but man these things make me irrationally upset and i need to rant about it for a minute.
so i'm guessing by now most people have seen these single serve coffee machine things or whatever (http://www.keurig.com/brewers/platinum-brewing-system) that exist nowadays, since they have been around for a lil while now. at first i was like hey whatever cause i saw it at my dentist office as a way to serve complementary coffee, which i guess is neat. however, i recently learned that people buy these things for their fucking homes. that, i just can't fucking understand. are people so lazy that they can't even use a normal coffee machine anymore? and that they are willing to pay the presumably large overhead for little packets of coffee that probably sucks to use their single serve machine? i dunno i guess what i am saying with this thread is that i am really scared of the way technology is slowly adapting to the laziness and apathy of american culture and i am not okay with this at all this not what i signed up for.

Some of those machines are for people who only drink 1 cup in the morning and don't need to make a whole pot, as it would just be a waste. They don't all need the individually wrapped packet things, but have smaller filters made just for them that you can just scoop 1 cup's worth into. They make sense and take up less counter space.

But then why don't they just get a french press? They come in all sizes, so whether you want one cup or 8, they're perfect.They're dirt cheap, the coffee tastes better and is actually healthier (the filter in a coffee machine traps a lot of the healthy oils that seeps through in a french press), and it takes up even less counter space!

I thought at first it was an espresso machine, but then I saw otherwise. Weird - even when I'm alone I make a pot of two or three cups to keep me going. Actually, in the UK, decent filter machines are getting kinda hard to find, as the shops seem to think that everyone wants espresso.

I got one for my wife for Christmas. Every morning she just presses a button and has a hot cup of coffee. And there is no mess to clean up. Its perfect because our house has exactly 1 coffee drinker, so making a full pot doesn't make sense.

My roommates have a single serving coffee maker (with the filters) because they don't often drink a lot of coffee. And seeing as how I don't drink it at all, it would be a waste. As to the french press thing, I think it's easier for them to push a button and then do something else while it's being made. Everyone prefers their coffee made a different way, I guess.
I'll just stick with a hotpot and tea. It's better for you than coffee!

I really love coffee.
The only issue I have with these single pack machines is the packaging waste and the fact you lose out on the ground which I use for my skin and other stuff. One coffee can be nice, but the packaging isn't worth it.

No, Sean. Jens and I used to make a single cup of coffee for our mom when we were younger, you just put less water and less coffee in the machine and tadah, it's not that hard.

A couple offices I have worked at had these, and it made sense there. The offices were big enough and had people coming and going on different schedules, so they had like 8 or 10 different coffees and teas and everyone could pick what they wanted and have it fresh right then.

I have had coffee from a number of these things (the Keurig one that Sean posted, as well as the Nespresso (http://www.nespresso.com/#/us/en), and maybe another one or two) and every one of them makes coffee that, in my opinion, ranges from grotesque to halfway decent.
If you are not super enthused with the taste of real coffee and/or you only really drink it for the caffeine, then I guess these machines make sense. But I think the coffee out of my Moka pot, made with freshly ground beans, is vastly superior.
(But before I got the Moka pot, I made a single cup of drip coffee every morning and it was not a big deal at all.)

I went for an interview to work at a Nespresso shop once. I was a fully qualified barista. They said I didn't have enough retail experience. Blow you guys. I bet your coffee tastes like shit anyway.

Also yeah, I bought a french press (well, we call them plungers) a little while ago for my boyfriend, despite the fact that my housemates have between them three stovetop espresso makers and a big expensive espresso machine. Now everyone uses the plunger. Le sigh.

This is what ben uses, and seems to like it. He bought a cheapo espresso machine (which I told him would be awful, but did he listen to me? nooooo) and we have finally put it back in the box to free up the bench space. He uses a moka pot rather than a french press because he likes espresso rather than long black type coffee, and it takes hardly any time! No big deal! Also he gets beans from various shops and grinds them to order so he gets to try the different brands of coffee to find out which one he likes the best.
Those Nespresso-esque things shit me so much, though. We actually had a guy come into the cafe I worked at and ask if we sold the capsules. I think the barista (also the owner of the cafe) had to try very hard to not just laugh him out of the store. There is a ridiculous amount of waste with the packaging, it is being lorded as amazing coffee and are so expensive!

Like I don't think they're the greatest things going but uh I have a friend that has one and it makes perfect sense because she is a student that lives on her own and usually only drinks one cup of coffee before classes in the morning. They're smart for that. I think french presses are better but whatever. they're certainly not the downfall of fucking civilisation like sean suggests in the OP. Because that would be a dumb thing to say.
Anyway I was originally gonna come in here to say "hey at least it isn't Nespresso" but people got that covered. Good job, everyone.

i guess this is kind of odd, i like sprouts, and they're pretty bitter.

It's weird really, I guess it's just one of those tastes you have to get used to in order to like, but when you first start to get used to it it's amazing. I used to hate coffee, same with olives (just the thought of olives used to make me gag) and red wine, and now I love them all! And yeah, I like my coffee best with no milk and no sugar, mmm.

What Dovey said. My mother does in-home nursing care and one of her clients keeps a li'l single serve brewer in their son's room for the nurses' use along with a nice li'l variety of coffees. This is ideal since there's never more than a single nurse there at a time and keeping the li'l reservoir full doesn't require much fussing around in their tiny kitchen.

also i have a little drip coffee machine which cost me $15 at canadian tire and i grind my own coffee and cook breakfast every single morning and the process of both brewing coffee and cooking breakfast always takes me 10 minutes (i know this because i listen to the cbc news podcast every morning which is always exactly 10 minutes long and it always finishes just as i finish making breakfast) and i wake up just as obscenely early as the rest of you who complain about having no time so you guys have no excuse. it's cheap and it's delicious. brew your own god dang coffee like a god dang man

My parents bought one of those Nespresso machines that are being advertised by George Clooney all over the place. My stepdad is the only one who drinks coffee but you put these little capsules in the machine and it apparently makes you a rather wonderful cup of coffee. You also pour the milk into a jug and it froths it all on it's on (which I use for when I want hot chocolates).

Also Sainsburies is one of the better cheap whiskies going. Nicer than quite a few of the more mid-ranged offerings.
Thing is that I don't really mind drinking cheap whiskey within reason. I could never afford to drink Laphroaig or Bruichladdich or Jura or whatever any time I fancy a scotch. Drinking lower quality scotch does not actually physically harm me (apart from the same way all scotch harms you), and it is still more enjoyable than just sitting in a chair not drinking scotch at all. It's not the ultimate possible scotch drinking experience, but it's fine. What is constantly being implied and occasionally outright stated with regards to coffee is that this is not a good attitude: that you should either drink the best possibe coffee brewed in the most correct way or you should not drink coffee. This is a patently ridiculous position. I would never in fact argue that a good filter coffee doesn't taste better than an instant, in fact I can tell the difference between filter, instant, french press and americano pretty much instanty. However, to me, instant coffee, at least the brands I buy, tastes perfectly fine. In fact most coffee that doesn't come out of a vending machine on a train station is perfectly amenable to my palette. I am generally just quite laid back on most gustatory matters: I appreciate good things, but I don't constanty demand them, nor do I expect them. It's nice to have a fancy coffee or meal or scotch or whatever as a treat, but I can live perfectly fine with the standard fare.
The only place where this attitude slightly breaks down is beer and cigarettes, though this is in large part because I like very particular sorts of beer and cigarettes (ruby and dark ales and strong rolling tobacco in liquorice papers respectively) and these types are generally all of a certain quality. I do find drinking most common lagers or smoking cheap cigarettes somewhat unpleasant though.

Also some people don't like coffee because they really just don't like coffee. I love the smell of it, but I can't stand the taste of it. Have I tried it? Yes, several times over the years and it's always been the "good stuff" but it still tastes horrible. Sorry! I prefer different bitters. And if someone prefers instant coffee over the other stuff, then hey, that's cool too. You drink your stuff and I'll drink mine and we'll all be happy people!

Fair enough (my wife prefers instant) - but the difference in the coffee case is hugely more than the difference in the whisky case.

Chocolate-coated coffee beans for after-dinner nibbles are a thing. I have been known to eat a whole pack in a sitting.

I honestly wouldn't know, because I don't drink it, but I'm sure there is a great difference. I'm guessing it's more along the lines of beer - cheap beer tastes, well, cheap while higher end beers have more flavor, etc. But I know people who still really like the cheap stuff whereas others will only drink imports or microbrews.

I wouldn't buy famous grouse if I couldn't afford a single malt of some kind, but I will drink basically any beer anyone puts in front of me (shit, I drank Miller High Life in Chicago), and any coffee except instant goes (the one we have here at school stays in the percolator for literally days on end, but I still drink four or five cups a day). I will eat any white cheese available, but I only eat Heinz tomato beans or similarly nice ones, and will not eat tomato beans if I cannot afford them. It varies with the substance, I guess!
At first I was going to make a post that said "the fuck are tomato beans" but then I used the internet to find out. They seem like something that would taste not too bad. I probably would not like to eat them from a can, though.

Eating baked beans out of the tin is like eating peanut butter out of the jar, ie it is frowned on by society but everyone's done it.
I gotta admit I am not a particular fan of any beans but heinz and will never personally go out and buy another brand, but I think that's more to do with familiarity than quality. Heinz baked beans remind me of my childhood, pretty much. Same with their tomato soup; any other type of soup I don't give a shit but tomato has pretty much got to be heinz. I think that's fundamentally a different thing though. Like I bet you pretty much the only reason for, say, privileging marmite over vegemite is which one you grew up with.

I've had some pretty tasty instant coffee, to be honest. Granted I don't drink coffee often (like twice a month when I'm way too tired at the diner or whatever) so I probably don't have quite as particular tastes as some of you? But yeah, instant coffee, not always so bad I guess?

I don't think the way khar reacted to this thread was out of place given that sean kicked things off with a choice bit of self-righteous neuroticism.
I also really do feel that there's often a lot of snobbery involved with at least the language of things like coffee and scotch drinking. I have a couple of friends who practically use ritual language when discussing alcohol and they reacted with abject horror when they found I sometimes mix cheap blended scotch with coca cola. I like the smoky finish compared to similarly priced American liquors. Sue me.

Actually, I like rye for mixing with coke as well, now that I think about it, but some of 'em get a bit too sweet. As far as coke goes, it's an ethical blindspot for me. I've always drank it and I basically have some mutant form of Stockholm syndrome at this point.

according to the various labels on this thing, the coffee that i buy is direct-to-farmer fair trade, carbon neutral, AND uses primarily recycled material in their manufacturing process. also the website makes a point (among many) of noting that most of the company's staff don't own cars and either ride their bikes or take the bus to work.

'round this time last year, my dad was kind enough to drive me over to Phil's parents' place so I could see their farm. While we were out of the room for a while, Dad sat and conversed with his parents and apparently they gave him a cup of coffee. Later, I asked what he thought of them, and after pussyfooting around the question for a bit, he said he didn't think they were "our kind of people".

Right, so I just want to chime in and say that I do not like coffee either, Jimmy, nor espresso or lattés or anything of the sort. I guess I do not like bitter things, either! Except scotch, which is bitter? I would never have considered it bitter. Also I love dark chocolate, but I hate beer. And sprouts. I also really do not like most tiramisu, either, or mocha-flavoured anything. I wish my boy liked coffee, though, because I love the way it smells and if he made it I could smell it all the time.

People get seriously snobby about things they like and you don't like, no matter what it is. I am the pickiest eater EVER, as in, I take forever to order anything because I don't like 'customizing' my food so I have to find something that's 90% edible and this is always difficult everywhere.
And I'm looked down on and considered childish because of not liking onions, or coffee, or (most) chocolate, or steak, etc. etc. etc.

burr grinders are MUCH nicer, and faster too. you can get a small basic one for as cheap as $40 at some places here. i hate having to constantly scrape too-fine coffee out of my cheap little grinder. if you drink coffee on a daily basis (like me) and are also a huge snob (also me), it's a good investment.

I buy beans from places around here, grind them up fresh then use my moka pot to make delicious espresso. Well, sometimes it's delicious. Othertimes I get distracted and leave it too long, meaning it's too hot and bitter :( But on the whole the system works pretty well for me. The only way I could get any better would be to buy an at least semi-decent espresso machine, which would be something in the realm of $400-500 AUD, and I really don't think that's a good idea.
I really wish I liked french press stuff, because you get more of it and it seems a bit simpler to do, especially in the morning. Then again, my coffee tastes have changed since the last time I tried it, so I might give it a go again soon to see how I like it now.

Yes sir, that would be what I mean. Though I'm wondering... I'm looking around Amazon at Delonghi's coffee makers and they look pretty inexpensive to me... and they're not getting good reviews. Do you have a specific machine you recommend? He just does basic coffee in the morning, not espresso, though we wouldn't be averse to getting a good espresso machine someday. He drinks coffee and beer like most people taste wine, so he'd love to have a top-quality machine, but I'm thinking keep it under $200 for the "plain old coffee" machine.

I'm not sure of the exact model but my ex's parents had one, it was a one-touch espresso machine with a grinder and it made a very tasty cup of coffee, indeed. Based on the pics on the Delonghi website, it might be the PrimaDonna, which a cursory google reveals usually prices over $1000, which matches up from what I heard from said ex. I wouldn't be surprised if a drip machine from Delonghi wasn't similar fantastic, as I imagine drip coffee is hardly an Italian company's area of expertise or interest.

I got called a snob at work for only ever buying quite expensive coffee to drink at work. It's instant coffee, but that's only because my floor doesn't have a kitchen & I was told off for taking to long to clean out my Cafetiere/french press/plunger. The coffee from the machines is free, but it's tastes like drains & ponds.
I am not a coffee snob. I just like strong coffee. I have about 10 different coffee makers at home, we use the grounds as compost. You can't do that with a Nespresso. That is why they are bad. Wasteful.

Usually best to use within a day of grinding. If kept refrigerated or frozen then you'll still get a decent brew within a couple of weeks.

nah it's also got something to do with the hourglass shape of the coffee maker and the filter - the water stays in the grounds for a more specific amount of time depending on the coarseness of the grind, which is something drip makers don't really have a mechanism for and apparently this affects the bitterness and the flavour of the coffee a lot. maybe gravity is involved too? science? i read about this like four times on the chemex website and i still can't figure out the logistics of it but the cute guy with the beard at salt spring coffee told me to buy one and all the online reviews i have read seem to be glowing so i got a pretty good feeling about this thing.
also... yeah i'll be honest, i want people to know i am better than them when they walk into my apartment and see my fancy coffee maker. i live in a shallow city that is obsessed with coffee, you got to do what you got to do

I think that within a few years I'll have a Doc Brown-esque coffee maker in the morning. Whats all this "single use" cup shit? Just get a cafetiere. Costs like £5. For $179.95 I could get one of my housemates to get me coffee AND a handjob every morning for a good while.
But man got a bean grinder for my birthday (parents scoped that out) and damn thats some good coffee. Now, normal instant coffee isn't good enough. I have to get "Gold" or whatever shit is slightly different tasting.

I know a guy who has an Aeropress (http://aerobie.com/products/aeropress.htm) and thinks very highly of it. Enough that I'm tempted to buy one for myself - I don't enjoy drip coffee but I do enjoy espresso. And to buy it at a local brick-and-mortar establishment will only set me back about $35.
