A lot of avatars around here make me uncomfortable. A long time ago I used to complain about it, but I just gave up and stopped visiting here from work. That's probably a good idea anyway.

I am posting from my iPhone when I am sitting right in front of my computer. Seems a little silly but quite necessary.

Katie's I've gotten over and just generally think is silly, but yeah, the tongue thing....I don't know man, it gives me the creeps. But it's also one of those avatars that's like a train wreck - it's awful, but you can't stop watching.
Unlike Jodie's P-Diddy/Bjork icon which makes me laugh every freaking time. And the cute animated animal ones. Those are awesome and I watch them all the time.

Trollstormur's puke face wash was too epic to be gross. But the split tongue, as I've said before... eugh. Doing stuff like that to your body just hits all the wrong buttons.

I haven't got any problems with it either, and I usually hate animated avatars. I thought it was interesting the first time I saw it because I couldn't figure out how each half was moving independently, then I remembered I could curl my tongue into a W shape and stopped thinking about it.
There's nothing gross about splitting your tongue. It's no more "wrong" than piercing your ears or dyeing your hair, two things which are perfectly common and considered normal.

I'm fine with split tongues. Steve's has never bothered me. It's the avatar that bothers me. Why? I don't really know. Maybe just because it doesn't stop, who knows. Animated avatars are too distracting for me to ignore, I guess.

Also, if I'm scrolling through a thread I get my posts and Johnny's posts mixed up all the time even though the avatars aren't all that similar. I think it's those big ugly blue stars camouflaging everything underneath them.

The comments on the source video on Youtube were fuckin' ace. They ranged between "KILL IT WITH FIRE" and "omg hottest thing ever", with pretty much no shades of grey. My favourite: "I have the most confusing erection ever".

The only one I ever officially complained about was the guy who had an animated gif from an old movie where a person's eyeball was being cut. Even though I knew it was just special effects, even scrolling by it real fast just icked me out to the point of nausea.

i have been on this forum for like four years and still have never had an avatar.
i like it when regulars have the same avatar forever and then i can scroll through posts and know who's talking because the avatar in my peripheral vision links up with that person in my brain and i can read through conversations much more smoothly. and in the same vein, when two people have avatars that look too much alike, i get really confused because people are posting things and it does not line up at all with their usual posting style and i'm like "why is person A trying to sound all like person B" and it just causes me unnecessary distress in my forum-reading.
i think i read this forum too much.

Yeah. I have had two avis since I joined, but both basically cartoon Chinese girls' heads against a square red background, and I've had my present one for a while. I think stability is important.

I think I am going to stick with this one for a while, although Bad Machinery recently tempted me sorely again. I was considering making an avatar out of the last panel of this comic (http://www.scarygoround.com/?date=20110201), just the face, and changing my status to "To have tho much power feelth DITHGRATHEFUL!".
The longest one I have had was KATZEN IST KREIG, which some people have agitated for a return to, but I believe that variety is the spice of life. Changing your avatar/sig/profile to me is like changing your hairstyle or something. I enjoy the process of curating and developing my online presentation quite a bit.

Okay, so the art just doesn't really look very good. Looks very 1980s show promo. I guess. Shit, its overwhelming here.
The right hand looks really really awkward. Who actually holds a chain/rope like that?
All of the clothes look like an afterthought and that just upsets me on many levels.
The background has no place looking as polished as it does.
It actually makes me want to hurt myself.

it was hard to give up but i've had my current one fairly consistently for over three years now and i think i'm gonna keep it for a while longer because stability is nice and i like to think of it as now being a sort of extension of my own personality and presence here. that and i just think it's really great and i haven't found a better one since.

That anime thing usually extends to QC characters too. I mean I'll usually read the post just to keep the context of the whole conversation going, but I tend to discount whatever it may say a bit faster.

On the matter of large animated avis, it's worth noting that on a lot of pages of this forum more bandwidth (and time) is used downloading the avis than the real content of the page (there are a couple of 2MB avis out there)! If would be a friendly gesture if people with gifs that have not been sized down to 100x100 for avi use do that (as JD has already done). A very straightforward free program to do this for animated gifs is here (http://www.ashongsoft.com/product/gif-resizer.html); selecting "good quality" actually makes a smaller file generally.

Bandwidth preservation is the main reason I keep avatars turned off although I've now turned them back on to see what all the fuss is about. Drill King's is giving me epilepsy but nothing else here seems that outrageous (I haven't clicked on the link from Mr. Hodges).
Still, in the esprit d' corps, I've put up my favourite avatar, which is blatantly stolen from someone else on another forum.

I think Tania, Kat, Rizzo and JHock's avatars are the ones I would be most confused by if they changed. Oh and Tommy's actually, although I admit I do often have to scroll back up to check if it was Tommy or Tania who posted.
My current avatar is the only remnant of that avatar meme we had a while back, but it is so true.

Whenever I go into meebo, I don't know who most people is because they don't have avatars and it confuses me. Even if I recognize the name from the forums, I don't have any clear identification unless there's a picture there.

What makes the difference to me between a split tongue and pierced ears or nose is that I consider my tongue to be a lot more sensitive and important than a flap of skin or cartilage that doesn't have as many sensory cells. So it's not so much the cosmetic appeal/disappeal as it is a question of how you could bear to cut through all that meat.
My avatar past is this Half-Life 2 Deathmatch one, pretty much. I rarely find a suitably sized picture that I like enough to bother changing it here.

My current is a close crop of a photo (http://www.bexgd.com/images/stories/design/places/IMG_4660.jpg) I took of the National Cathedral in DC. I usually use a crop of the man and woman that are facing each other but wasn't sure if chiseled side-boob was appropriate. Later I caught sight of a penis-av or two so I may re-crop it at some point and go with the shot I like.
The tongue avatars freak me out though. I'm not really creeped out by split tongues, but like someone else said, maybe it's because it's repetitive.
