Title: AH REDWALL
Post by: Drill King on 10 Feb 2011, 09:08
I know you guys probably know and normally I would not start a topic like this but AH! brian jacques has passed away.

Redwall was a pretty big deal when I was a kid and god damn I loved them.

I'm glad she posted it here, since I never touch the subforums either and wouldn't have known there was any thread at all!

This is a sub-forum.

Actually, this, and the other forums (I.e. Entertainment) are just straight up forums.  They're all in one category, though, which is the Other Fun Things category.  Sub-forums you typically have to access by going to a forum, and then going further into another forum.  Although sometimes site designers are smart and allow you to access the sub-forum directly from the main forum directory via a little link at the bottom of the forum that said sub-forum is a sub-forum of.

I think she was referring to "sub" as a position of social standing, like, they're all a lower caste or some shit. Ohhh yeahh. 8-)

Dudes I don't care about the wording, I just want to avoid the denizens of the comic discussion part.
Plus I only have the ponyleaks bookmarked so it's easy to forget about the other bits.

You're about as likely to encounter QCD people here as you are in Entertainment or CLICK

If a forum is a single entity, then surely whatever is divided into categories on the front-page forum is a sub-forum? I've always read "forum" as an umbrella under which subforums are gathered, like a bookcase made up of individual shelves.
Common misconception, actually.  The proper term is that it's a message board divided into forums divided further into sub-forums.  However, some people skip the message board part and just refer to the entire message board entity as the "forums" because when they look at the message board that's what they see: a list of forums.

But for some reason things always seem to get stupid in like 0.5 seconds in QCD, and maybe that's just a factor of not being inclined to dissect/yell about the comic anyway, but it just doesn't seem worth the effort to try to keep track of what's going on up there. It's hard enough here in ASAMZ.

No, you're missing my point. Those forums are no more part of the QCD group than we are.

Ozy's right, the other parts of the forum are pretty solid and in no way associated with QCD. I don't really see any spill over and it seems the the other parts suffer because of the stigma associated with QCD

I tend to look forward to posts in those sections more than I do the posts in makeout zone, tbh. It's pretty much the same people just with more focus.

Y'all do realise that QCD is under new management, don't you?  It still may not be your interest or style,  but hey!

Also you can just close it off with Hi, I'm New, not worry about it, and have fun in the other forums.

Am I seriously to be led to believe that the reason that the other fora in this section (sub or nonsub) move so goddamn slow is because people are not even visiting them under the bizarre missaprehension that they contain Queerly Creepy Discoursers?

The mind boggles! Get over to Entertainment and Music NAOW.
Title: Re: AH REDWALL

I visit music now and then, usually lurking. But yes I'm willing to bet that is a huge reason for how slowly they move.

I can't get over my fear that my tastes are way to pedestrian for the Music forum so give it a wide berth.

Some people get a bit earnest, but there's a wide range of tastes there, actually.

On the matter of avoiding QCD people, I think you'll find there are more people in this forum who also visit QCD than there are in the other more specialised ones.

That sounds awful specific, have you got a source? Wikipedia says the terms message board and forum are interchangeable.
Internet forum, or forums, or message board are interchangeable.  However, even the wikipedia article goes on to keep saying "forums" when referring to the entire entity, rather than just forum.

Here, you can look at vBulletin's official forum: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/forumdisplay.php/5-Site-Feedback

You can see that the general name up top for the forum is just "Forum."  However, each individual forum, i.e. Site Feedback is called a Forum.  Then, there is another forum within the Site Feedback forum called "vBulletin Jira Questions and Quick Tips" that is explicitly called a Sub-forum.

Same as with another top message board software developer, phpBB: http://www.phpbb.com/community/index.php the entire thing is called Forums, but then there are Forums, further divided into Sub-forums which are Forums within Forums.

The people who made the technology for this board, SMF, are a bit different: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?P=3c70dec8a136446af0b17b29700f94e2& they call each area a "Board," with what I call Subforums being "Child boards."

Really, there isn't one standard definition, but Forum/s > Forum > Subforum is the most common.  Forum > Subforum > Subsubforum/Child subforum is rare, though.

great now I am having an anxiety attack about what "this bitch" could be referring to
Title: Re: AH REDWALL

"This bitch" refers to the forum. I am speaking of the fact that there have been a whole bunch of threads recently where we have gotten really fucking meta about the forum and the nature of online communication in general. I mean, most of those threads were started by Kieffer, but people still posted in them. Myself included. It's a useful conversation to have sometimes but it just seems to be happening with a pretty remarkable frequency these days. I'm not sure why.

Y'all do realise that QCD is under new management, don't you?  It still may not be your interest or style,  but hey!

Even with the New Management it is still somewhat unsavoury. I admit that I go in there and read some threads, sometimes even the Comic Discussion Thread, and it all still feels like people over analysing the comic and still being vaguely creepy without outright shipping or talking about the characters' breast or whatever they used to do. It has gotten better but is still pretty shit.

Like, there is a thread basically saying "Who is that girl in the comic, Padma? What does she do? Why is she fighting Faye?" Jesus Christ, she has been in the past three days' comics! You can tell it is the same person! She is fighting Faye because it is funny!  STOP OVERTHINKING THINGS! shutupshutupshutupshutupshutupshutupihateyouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

despite my best efforts, it is still basically impossible to penetrate somebody with your gaze, so I don't know how pornographic that would be
