I like their approach.
Thanks for waiting, we're gonna release a record like, this week, hope that's cool with everybody.

They've not published a tracklist anywhere, have they?

In Rainbows was staggering, I have high hopes for this record.

I mean I know Radiohead is a big deal and all that but I hit maturity way past their initial "holy shit" factor so now they just sound like Radiohead and not some world-moving game-changer (which I'm not even sure they were, but w/e).

Depends on how much you enjoy pre-doo wop vocal groups (Ink Spots, et al).

Still can't sign on to preorder this without hearing at least some of the material first.

I mean, I was pretty excited, but I think Radiohead is passed the phase of actually releasing monolithic albums. They'll still release a great product, I'm sure, but I'd be surprised if it was a magnum opus.

Damned if In Rainbows wasn't a great album, though.

Oh right. Well yeah, I don't think even Radiohead thinks that, seeing as they're waiting til 5 days before releasing it to let everyone know what's up.

EDIT: Kinda bummed that they're not doing pay-what-you-want this time, I was looking forward to not paying very much for this.

I actually think In Rainbows was as good as OK Computer/Kid A, it just wasn't seen as an artistic leap forward or whatever.

Whatever, they're my favourite band and they're bringing out a new album this weekend. FUCK. YES.

Hey I enjoy Radiohead's music a lot but it's not like they're the Second Coming and all, something a large number of Radiohead fans seem to think. I thought In Rainbows was their best effort since Kid A and am looking forward to this one (but not the inevitable wave of Thom Yorke dick-sucking)

I've been considering what to make of this sudden announcement and the album's immanent release, and while I would be loath to lavish all kinds of praise on Radiohead, they consistently release records I find something I like in, and I've never completely ignored a Radiohead album the way I did, say, The Suburbs. So while I'm not gonna get huge hopes or expect anything in particular, I'm definitely going to listen to this when it comes out.

that last photo pretty neatly encapsulates why I dig Radiohead more now than when they were doing all the "important " stuff they did.

Hey, kids! Do you think "King of Limbs" is an extremely dumb thing to call a record? You're right, but it turns out the explanation behind it is actually quite cool;

Quote
The name of the new album relates to an oak tree in Wiltshire’s Savernake Forest, thought to be around 1,000 years old. The forest lies around three miles away from Tottenham House, a listed country house where Radiohead recorded part of In Rainbows.

This was posted like 30 seconds ago (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfOa1a8hYP8&feature=player_embedded). Enjoying the song, it's sort of HTTT-esque. Video's funny too. Director is Garth Jennings aka Hammer & Tongs (of the Blur "Coffee and TV" milk carton video).

Song was apparently played live a time or two, but Radiohead previews stuff live a lot.

Wow, this is too electronic for my liking.

Even after In Rainbows? Thom Yorke seems to be incorporating some of the influences that he first put forth on 'The Eraser', and I like it.

Also, listen to Codex some more. What a track.

I am loving this. Wine might be helping.

Just finished my first listen, and was really impressed. It sounds like nothing they've done before, but exactly like Radiohead. I can never really tell about the quality of an album after one listen, but here are some thoughts:
1) The first half is certainly the most rhythmically complex I've heard from a Radiohead album. I think KvP was right about the HTTT reference, it's got the same feel as The Gloaming or Backdrifts. I think it does sound electronic, but not in a Warp sort-of-a-way they've done before, sounds like they've used the electronics to provide trickier rhythms to some of the songs.
2) It doesn't sound as varied in tone or style as In rainbows. I get the feeling they restricted their palette alot more for this album than their previous 4 or 5.
3) The bleeding from Codex to Giving Up The Ghost is utterly fantastic.
4) It is the exact correct length for an album.

John A said this one should be on Warp Records. Fair assessment?
Present-day Warp, sure. The B-side (tracks 5-8) are really quite different from the first 4, though. Might've worked better as a double-EP.

Radiohead is following the Pearl Jam trajectory.

First album: Serviceable but nothing to write home about aside from a few tracks ("Jeremy", "Alive"/"Stop Whispering", "Anyone Can Play Guitar")

Second album: Major improvement, still a few problems, but good stuff.

Third album: Utter masterpiece.

Fourth album: Very good, retreat from the spotlight (I'm counting Kid A and Amnesiac as one album because they essentially are)

Everything else: Increasingly mediocre.

Everything else has had too much baggage--with the exception of The Bends.

I don't ever expect anyone to agree with me.  But I really have had way too many conversations (in Real Life, not on the internet) about Radiohead where people spend half an hour telling me how wrong I am for not caring about HTTT and In Rainbows.  They're not bad but I've literally only ever listened to each of them maybe four times before giving up.

But I really, really love King of Limbs.  Almost as much as that last Xiu Xiu album.

I have no experience in this either but I've been told that they manage to do quite well reproducing the songs live, and that there's actually less going on than there might seem, certainly enough for five guys to crank out live.

I too am of the opinion that Radiohead should just rock out once or twice per album, it is good when they do that e.g; "Bodysnatchers"

It's deeply worrying to me that you are deeply worried about what music other people listen to.

My brother is living in San Francisco and recording an album with Anton Newcombe.

Actually I do have three half-sisters, but I tend to forget their existence.

They have two very good guitarists (who I know play lots of other instruments) and a decent rhythm section and I sometimes feel like they are all being underused by Yorke's continuing fascination with electronic based music.

hm! i don't know about this. what i know about the members of radiohead is that they are all interested in making new and interesting sounds come out of stuff. i think the reason they've been a band for so long and made the records they have is that their muses line up a lot when they sit down to make a record, you know?

Well last I heard (a week ago) he's waiting on Anton to actually get there, he doesn't live in the US full-time anymore.  Also, quoting from the email, "no surprise anton is a control freak and has decided to re-write 3 of my own songs, in a shocking bit of compromise both versions will be on the record, he is singing almost every song but that is my decision because you know how much my voice sucks, also i met this homeless girl from marin co. who is singing on a few tracks".

First impressions are very positive. I really like Selway's beats on this one and Give Up the Ghost is absolutely gorgeous. I wish they rocked out more on this one though. Not that Radiohead needs to rock out to be good, I just like the way they do it. I liked In Rainbows but it wouldn't have been nearly as good had they not filled their "balls-out" quota with Bodysnatchers.

I definitely was up for more Bodysnatchers rock, but this album is blowing me away.  I'm absolutely sold.  The rhythm section is outrageous.  The only thing that I can't figure out is what the hell Ed O'Brien is doing on most of these songs.  Doesn't really matter, I guess.

I've only listened to the album twice so far, but I as of now I think it's just ok. Some of the songs are fantastic ("Codex," Seperator") and while others aren't particularly bad, they just don't go anywhere. Like others in the thread have said I enjoy the fact that Radiohead follow their muses and like to try new things, and I'd rather they do that than churn out the same music over and over again to avoid alienating anyone.

I revere them as Gods completely without fault.

EDIT: God you guys, why not just agree to disagree? Everyone has completely different opinions on them and on 'what's the best thing they've done'. Me, I love all of their albums apart from Pablo Honey. I'm also increasingly desperately waiting to hear King of Limbs :/

No one likes Pablo Honey. No one.

Agree with whoever said this was the perfect length for an album - same with the last one, thought it was a good idea to release a second disc with all the of the odds 'n ends rather than clogging up the main album à la HTTT.

It's also the best thing they've done for quite awhile.

Interesting idea that they may release an outtakes album in the same vein as Amnesiac, I'm sure they have enough material for it.

I really can't stand 'We Suck Young Blood' on HTTT and that's all really, I skip that track and can listen to it all in one go. I love the dark fairy tale feel to it, almost as if they were trying to put a soundtrack to the stories of the Brother's Grimm, and yet managing to make some kind of political point at the same time.

The more I listen to this, the more I get the feeling that the first half of the album is just the band carrying out experiments in technique and playing around with production ideas before hunkering down for the second half, the real crux of it all. It's like halfway through "Feral" they just decide "Okay guys, time to get serious now" and then give us what amounts to a pretty damn top-notch EP. The fucking sequence from "Lotus Flower" through "Give Up the Ghost" is just breathtaking, and "Separator" gives us a nice cool-down following all that intensity.

NEW IDEA: use this shit as workout accompaniment

I always see Amnesiac as Kid A's little brother seeing as the songs are kinda outtakes from Kid A. Oddly the songs all sound like they could have been on Kid A and yet have their own character that means Amnesiac works as an album in its own right. I don't really understand why people bash Hail to the Thief and In Rainbows. In Rainbows for me was like, 'oh, that's cool', and then after that it got better every single time I heard it, and it still does.

Oh Amnesiac definitely feels like its own album and is distinct from Kid A in a lot of ways. Furthermore, it's still a good album. I just feel like the others are better. Not including Pablo Honey. I never even listened to Pablo Honey.

Have they ever actually said Amnesiac was "the b-sides of Kid A"?  If they did, I think they're lying or exaggerating.  Either way, Amnesiac is by far my favorite, and after several listens I think King of Limbs is right behind it.  There's just something haunting and great about it that I felt was missing from Hail and Rainbows.

Pablo Honey really does have some good songs on it, there's no reason to completely avoid it.  "Stop Whispering" is as good as the best songs on The Bends, easy.

I don't know if you haven't listened to them enough to appreciate them or whether you've listened to them and have your opinions (which I won't knock even though I disagree :P ) but Hail to the Thief and In Rainbows certainly have their haunting moments; songs like 'Stand up, Sit Down', 'Sail to the Moon', 'Where I End and You Begin', 'Wolf at the Door' from HTTT and 'Reckoner', 'Weird Fishes', 'All I Need' and 'Videotape' from In Rainbows always have a profound effect on me and boast a level of more human emotion that is strangely absent from some parts of Kid A and Amnesiac, however more artistic and experimental they may be (though 'How to Disappear Completely' always gets me).

Amnesiac isn't b sides as such, but I remember reading the songs are leftovers from the Kid A sessions (and damn fine leftovers they are, too), the alternate version of Morning Bell seems to support this.

I've been listening to Radiohead since I was 5 or 6, when my father took me to see them open for REM after Pablo Honey had just come out.

Hail and Rainbows have songs that could be described as "haunting", I agree, but not in the way that Amnesiac and King of Limbs are in my opinion.

Leftovers or B-Sides seem to me to be the wrong words. The band have said that the songs on Amnesiac didn't really fit onto Kid A, which I can completely understand; I can't see any of the songs from Amnesiac working on Kid A, it would just completely break the mood of both albums. I think of Amnesiac as something of an oddity in the Radiohead discography. It contains some of my favourite radiohead songs (Life in a Glass House, Pyramid Song, Packt Like Sardines) and some of my least (Pulk/Pull, the alternate version of Morning Bell), but both have their own mood separate from each other.

Also, the person who said that the songs form Kid A/Amnesiac lack human emotion: I can't think of more emotional songs than Pyramid Song or Motion Picture Soundtrack. They will soundtrack my funeral.

I said some parts :P Believe me, I'm not denying the emotional weight of either Kid A or Amnesiac, but some of the songs are emotionally distanced (by necessity according to Yorke) compared to say In Rainbows which I can more easily relate too. They're just different emotions. This is all subjective anyway, and it's the genius of Radiohead that they can produce such distinct moods with each album, and that we can have this kind of discussion is a testament to that.

To clarify: Amnesiac isn't exactly B-sides from Kid A. Both albums simply consist of songs that are (mostly) from the same recording sessions. So while Amnesiac was released a year later and has a completely unique tone, it was born at the same time as Kid A.

I am a Gnostic, so that is interesting, and I had not heard that before.

"Pyramid Song" is also (rather obviously) derived from Egyptian religion, as well.  It's also literally the best song I have ever heard (sorry, "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space").

I think Tommy's response was supposed to highlight the other work of John Darnielle, which includes the Mountain Goats and that book in the 33⅓ series. No  other musical criticism on Radiohead written by the man was mentioned, so it's safe to assume such writing doesn't exist and and that your question was answered, right?

God-DAMN this album is brilliant in places. Lotus Flower has fucking swagger, plus a vocal melody on par with Nude. Separator is just plain amazing. Give up the Ghost is chillingly beautiful, but feels a bit unfinished. Little By Little fucking swaggers, too. There's an air of confidence all over the album, even when it feels like it's coming apart.

Honestly, though, I would have loved to have seen Skirting on the Surface on there, along with The Amazing Sounds of Orgy (in a different arrangement, something closer to Little by Little).

I was listening to this while riding my bike home tonight and turned off the main road into the darker, quieter seats, and could see the mountains rising up before me and the stars reigning over them, and right at that moment the opening chords of "Give Up the Ghost" kicked in. It was such a beautifully surreal experience I almost cried (but that may have had something to do with the chill wind in my face making my eyes water).

Amnesiac is your favourite radiohead album and you happen to be a Gnostic.  :psyduck:

Not really that big of a coincidence, Gnosticism has been getting a lot more popular in the last decade or so, and to a lesser extent even before that.  I was raised on Philip K. Dick (who converted to Gnosticism awhile before he died) and Robert Anton Wilson and analyses of early Christian mysticism (Holy Blood, Holy Grail - stuff like that).

The band name A Place To Bury Strangers is a Gnostic reference, for example.  There are major Gnostic churches (and "churches" because Gnosticism is a pretty big tent and not everyone involved with it is "religious" so much as they are "philosophical").  Religious colleges have been offering legitimate Reverend/Preacher status for Gnostics.

Not to mention reading the Nag Hammadi texts was pretty much a staple for metaphysical hippie types like my dad back in the 60s/70s.
