Title: Okay. I finally get Broken Social Scene. Now what?
Post by: Durin on 09 Mar 2011, 02:02
After listening to them on and off for the past couple of years, I've finally fallen in love with anything and everything that is Broken Social Scene. Now, I am wondering where to go from here. I got a lot of recommendations for Kevin Drew's "Spirit If..." which seemed kind of obvious. However, I was wondering about the not so obvious things to acquire.

Find the album they did for some movie (or something, I don't remember, but I know I found it in the old MF thread) titled Lo-Fi for the Dividing Nights

If you like Feel Good Lost you might dig the band that turned into Broken Social Scene, KC Accidental.

Lo-Fi is just a series of alt recordings that didn't make it onto Forgiveness Rock Record. Still worth checking out though!

Seconding the KC Accidental dig. Also would strongly recommend Rah Rah, who are like a humble small-town version of that band I guess!

Charles Spearin's "The Happiness Project" is pretty boss if you like weird jazz/post-rock played to the tune of peoples' voices talking about life.

EDIT:

Also on the sadly departed Polymaths record.

Woah really? That's cool. I have the Polymaths record lying on my computer waiting for a proper listen. I listened to it a while ago, but I wasn't really paying attention at the moment.

I was trying to find the EP a few months ago and found the LP. Then just a few minutes ago I was poking through the MF thread and found the EP.

actually I came into some of the rarer early EPs (early EP+2 release & ten rapids) that I really need to upload. Helicon 2 is far and away one of the best instrumental things ever made.

it's really fucking boring here so people get really intense into either making music or watching professional sports

since you're all incredibly desperate for it, here's a list of my credits:

the only one of those i'm not really sold on is the last one – the record isn't mixed very well and all the vocals sound like super weird on it, too. there's several instances where i'm audibly shouting but i'm buried in the distance on the left channel and there's a really close-sounding female vocal over top of it. it's disorienting.

i love being a hired gun, though. i wish i was asked more often.

also you should listen to los campesinos! dude, they're the best bss-ish band (and now they make like abrasive noise-pop twee or something, i don't know, but it's incredible)

Los Campesinos are awesome. Also, is it just me, or does every band on Arts & Crafts sound like BSS? I know Kevin Drew or someone in the band owns the label, but still. And they don't sound like them in a good way.

The last five tracks off of Romance is Boring... are indescribably awesome. Like, if they put out just those songs as an EP, that EP still would have topped my list of things released in 2010. Absolutely incredible.

Look I may have been taken as joking but Sun City Girls are really, really amazing. Probably more amazing than whatever band you're talking about! That's not much of an insult because they're more amazing than 99% of everything but still!

Also since we're going in no discernible direction I'll just say that one of my DJs reviewed the Jamie xx / Gil Scott-Heron remix album and seriously penciled in, and I'm only slightly paraphrasing here "Great beats ruined by some shitty old dude", and man I'm usually pretty chill with sound opinions but I felt exactly the opposite way (I'm New Here was fucking excellent and Jamie xx took it precisely nowhere near a place that was remotely interesting or comparable to the original album) but I had the decency to know the bare minimum about shit. Like for real what the fuck is wrong with you dude

Basically I'm saying get I'm New Here, it's amazing.

Calling Gil Scott Heron a "shitty old dude" is worthy of punishment. Especially, when comparing him at all to some dude in the xx.
