Someone please explain why you people like this so much. I don't get it. :psyduck:
-
Agreement.
They strike me as the indie equivalent of Converge or the Locust?
-
I have no idea why I like them, I just do.
-
My condolences to your ears.
-
I just think that people like them because People like them, y'know?
-
Can't speak for others, but I really enjoy how different Deerhoof from most bands in their eclectic sense of how music works. They switch keys constantly, their songs are schizophrenically mutable structurally, and Greg Saunier can play the fuck out of a drumset. They are sort of a hybrid child of art-rock and progressive rock, which I like despite not having a very developed taste for prog.
Honestly, most peoples' problem with the band seems to be the Japanese bird at the microphone, which is pretty much understandable.
-
I am not into Deerhoof, but I do really like one of their songs.
Super Duper Rescue Heads! (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004ITIEHK/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=wago-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B004ITIEHK)

My condolences to your ears.
Yeah well that's just your opinion man

Agreement.

what the fuck is wrong with converge
-
quit giving a shit about deerhoof! everyone! pick some band like the dirty projectors or radiohead or animal collective, another band we've already complained about to death like this one! ALL OF THESE BANDS ARE DIVISIVE/P BORING at least whine re: something new or something you've not whined about in a while
YOU JUST DON'T GET IT, MAAAAAAAN
That's why we got the liturgy thread 8-)
Actual tangent here, I just realized why Gucci Mane has that EA throat tat - because he's in the game.
-
Deerhoof are a pretty badass band until that woman opens her mouth.
The fact that they choose to make an otherwise great band terrible purposely is the reason I hate them with every ounce of my being.
-
i still don't understand the hate on satomi though. they're not making their music "purposely terrible" it's just like she's the one who sings, i mean sometimes greg sings and it's kind of weird but like those are just the songs they want to make? and that's just her voice? it's not even grating or unpleasant or anything she's just tiny and japanese. like fuck.
also i really don't care about hating on OR praising deerhoof anymore why does this have to come up all the time
-
Also: This band is nowhere near popular enough where you are likely to be in a situation not of your own choosing where you have to listen to Deerhoof music! I don't like this band at all, but that is OK because I just don't listen to them. The whole hate thing was a slightly amusing meme for a while, like the flipside of "Funhouse, man" or Spiderland or something but it's been years since that was true.
Really it's just distracting our energies from hating on bands that are far more worthy of that hate. Guys, I heard a Wavves song the other day, what the fuck is going on with that bullshit.
-
Deerhoof on the radio
might listen to that supergroup
-
guys deerhoof are an entirely forgettable band, we can seriously stop talking about them now
-
No seriously can me make this a thread about how horrendously Wavves blows please
They should replace her with Henry Rollins or Ben Weasel. Get a real man in there, none of this feeble female bullshit.
Aside from how literally no one in the thread said anything resembling this, I can't quite get over the correlation of Ben Weasel to "real man". I see what you were trying to go for there, the reference, but Ben Weasel is a skinny bitch person.
-
i still don't understand the hate on satomi though.
Yeah but you're also a small Asian girl so fuck you and your insignificant opinions.
I like when Wata sings for Boris, but then again her voice doesn't remind me of cats fucking each other.
ps: Dovey dude seriously, fuck wavves.
-
Also: Deerhoof on the radio? Where can I find radio stations like that here?
I had to import Deerhoof vs Evil from the US because England doesn't really like good music of late. Apparently Beady Eye and the very much anticipated third Subways album is all we care about. Oh, and something about Bloc Party reforming.
Stop the hate on Deerhoof, implement hate on Beady Eye/Oasis.
-
TOMMY I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST ASIAN FEMALES.
I just DO NOT like her voice, which in turn means I do not like her band. If Greg sang on all the songs, I would fucking LOVE them, probably.
-
as a huge fan of Deerhoof, i have to admit that the singer is easily my least favorite part of the group. I mean...that band....they fucking rule....those guys make some of the coolest fucking music i've ever heard.....and then the lady starts shrieking and sometimes it works for me and sometimes it doesn't
it really is kind of a shame because deerhoof's drummer is one of my favorite drummers, like, ever. And that guitar guy is no slouch either.
still love deerhoof though..... it's just that sometimes, just sometimes, i find myself wishing they were an instrumental band
-
maybe i AM biased being a tiny asian girl but god i don't even understand like what are you guys listening to? satomi's singing voice is SO fucking gentle. what are these "shrieks" and "cats" you are referring to, idgi
can someone just post the MBV cover because it's so nice and invalidates that argument completely
-
watch me, i'm gonna make a deerhoof ripoff song and if deerhoof haters like it then please allow me to say Fuck All Of You (it will suck anyway i can't be deerhoof by myself.)
-
Tommy, I think you need to get your ears checked. Or at least use some q-tips or something.
-
watch me, i'm gonna make a deerhoof ripoff song and if deerhoof haters like it then please allow me to say Fuck All Of You (it will suck anyway i can't be deerhoof by myself.)
I'll join. Gimme a bit to learn drums/move to California.
-
what does everyone in this thread think about ponytail or women
-
Oh, michael, for sure!!!!!!!!!!!
also yeah man this lady's voice is so horrible i don't see how you guys can listen to this ughhhhh (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wf41GBiOGV4)
-
i can actually get not liking satomi's voice but yeah tommy's right there are some like seriously false things being said here & they're ridiculous & besides that who on here is going to front like they don't like abrasive vocals anyways
-
Replace Satomi with a white dude and things are all good?
They'd be lesser for doing so.
Would you stop nitpicking, Tommy? I wouldn't care if they replaced her with Tiger Woods, or a transgenered Zimbabwean, or a Canadian girl or whatever. The fact that she is an Asian woman has absolutely no input to why I don't like the band.
And yeah, I've only heard a few songs, but I'm not going to go out of my way to force myself to like something if I'm not impressed after a few tracks. I tried that with Animal Collective and it made me want to do grevious bodily harm to people.
-
so shane doesn't like the band, we do, are we done here
-
Precisely.
Also, Dovey's previous point of man, fuck Wavves.
-
Oh, michael, for sure!!!!!!!!!!!
also yeah man this lady's voice is so horrible i don't see how you guys can listen to this ughhhhh (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wf41GBiOGV4)
Now I am watching videos of them doing Joy Division covers with Jamie Stewart. Awesome!
-
Can I join in on the Wavves hate? That twat doesn't deserve Jay Reatard's old band
but regarding Deerhoof, I think they're pretty alright! I've only listened Friend Opportunity and Offend Maggie a few times but I liked what I heard. Not music I listen to on the regular but this thread has inspired me to give 'em another go
-
@JimmyJazz: RUNNERS FOUR!
-
(http://pigeonsandplanes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/wavves_001-500x271.png)
fffffuccckkkkkkk youuuuuuuu
-
Get a real man in there, none of this feeble female bullshit.
Finally somebody standing up for punk rock music
-
If I might make some note on a subject in here, I find it hilarious that after the whole Ben Weasel thing, not only did EVERY band cancel out of the 20th anniversary weekend/festival thing they were having, but the rest of the band quit on him as well. Bottom. Drops. Out.
Apparently said bands have hopped on board for another Chicago-based festival happening around the same time (Memorial Dayish?)
-
disclaimer that I know that was a sarcastic post but it's the sort of thing that a good chunk of people probably feel, as has been said
what does everyone in this thread think about ponytail or women
I got one of the Ponytail guys' solo guitar albums on casette. I liked it!
As for Women, who needs em am I right fellas?!
Anna real talk I would probably like you slightly less if you were a giant aryan with like a thing for tigers or something. You're pretty good the way you are.
-
Deerhoof are being given a shit about? (Also, that is totally a coherent sentence)
Can someone enlighten me as to what make them fun to listen to? I usually see listening to music as a pleasurable experience, but this band just grates on me so much. Granted I've only actively listened to two (or three?) of their songs. I know people have different tastes, but god-dang. that is some ugly music.
-
Have at it, Tommy.
-
Yeah, c'mon, let's brawl.
-
Who knew Deerhoof was such serious fucking business?
-
Fuck it guys let's listen to Swans (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syVJBiCAsxE&feature=related)
-
What Deerhoof record should I listen to so I can decide whether or not I hate this band
-
Well, I just heard one measly song and it annoyed the shit out of me. Did I hit a nerve here?!
:psyduck:
that said; The "Choo choo choo chooooo beep beep" chorus was annoying as fuck, and I have a neurotic tendency to become REALLY annoyed at people with heavy accents.
-
I am fairly indifferent to Deerhoof. I've got no problem with the singing. If I was to pick out one thing that I didn't particularly like about them it would be the songwriting. The thing I never get is why everyone goes so crazy over the drumming. It doesn't sound particularly superlative to me. Like, obviously not bad, but not recognisably worthy of singling out for praise. I don't play the drums; is this just some technical drummer thing I can't pick up on, or is it just a thing you say as a special password. Like I can imagine that there is some book you can buy that tells you what you're supposed to think about a wide range of topics in order to appear to be cool and under Deerhoof it says 'Great drumming'.
-
it's not so much about how technical it is, it's just.... his "style"
he has awesome fucking style.
it's too abstract to try to define, so I'm not gonna bother, but I play drums and i think he has super sweet style. not that i think you have to be a drummer to hear it or anything (you don't), i"m just mentioning it because you mentioned that you weren't a drummer.
maybe it is actually important, i dunno.
-
what the fuck is wrong with converge
Nothing? Pretty much my favourite band.
-
What Deerhoof record should I listen to so I can decide whether or not I hate this band
Get Deerhoof Vs Evil. It feels more accessible than anything else I've heard by them(which is only one album but whatever)
-
i just made a mostly mathrockish playlist that's 6.2 hours long called "algebro"
i put Apple O on it, because....well because i fucking wanted to, that's why :-D
also i couldn't resist putting Polymaths on there, even though it's not the same genre at all
-
Polymaths belong everywhere.
-
Tommy, I would just like to say thank you for articulating all the reasons I like Deerhoof that I could never explain to myself.
-
One of my favorite parts about Deerhoof is yeah, the part where they all just seem really nice. I've read some interviews in which they've stated that they have no idea what they're doing when it comes to mixing and shit. I like that! I have no idea what I'm doing, either. They are just very inspiring. Like when they posted a picture on Facebook of them mixing the album in the car. I was like "I SHOULD DO THAT!" and then I did. And I was like :D the whole time
I'm very easily impressionable
-
INPUT FROM A NEWB, WHAT
Milk Man and Friend Opportunity are what got me into Deerhoof. They've got some weird experimental stuff on them, but there's also a fair amount of more accessible pop-ish elements, particularly on Friend Opportunity.
I really like Satomi's vocals, personally. There's a nice contrast between her high, childlike vocals and the crunchiness of the rest of the instrumentation. But I can understand how they would be off-putting to some.
Before joining/lurking on this forum, I never knew that Deerhoof was so divisive. Or a Big Deal at all.
-
I know right! Who knew Deerhoof were so divisive! Good Mosesing Tommy.
Also guys, I like Ponytail. What's up with that? Their new album is a lot of fun. What's up with that?
-

It's really not. The anti-deerhoof society consists of shane and maybe Calenlass.
-
And me!
-
I want to see them play a whole set.
I saw their last two songs at sasquatch the other year and they were so freaking awesome. I missed them on accident 'cause i read the schedule wrong and ended up watching some shitty band for most of their set before i realized i could hear "dummy discards a heart" coming from somewhere obviously magical. so i ran there as fast i could and saw about 2 songs.
and what a two songs they were! hoo boy
also: this has almost nothing to do with anything but have you guys ever listened to Shapes Like Dinosaurs? Because you should really really listen to Shapes Like Dinosaurs. I wrote about fifteen draft sentences here to try to explain why they are so great, but I gave up because i couldn't do it. At least not effectively.
unfortunately, youtube doesn't have very much by them, but you can listen to one of my favorite songs by them "Dinostomping Parts I-IV" on Last.fm (http://www.last.fm/music/Shapes+Like+Dinosaurs/_/Dinostompin%27+%28Pts.+I-IV%29#) (seriously listen to that song all the way through; it's wonderful)
okay, and watch this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtM-Rv5ouWg) and this (http://youtu.be/gEFp3hEgipw)
and maybe this if you're up for it: here's a live song (http://youtu.be/z2sR2-JeNJA) the first half of which I don't think is recorded (besides by that video, i mean)
anyway, they're like one of my favorite fucking bands and I want to help other people experience even a fraction of the joy that this band has brought me, if they're able to, because it's excellent
-
Halfway through The Runners Four and the girl's voice sounds totally cool to me
-
I know this is way up the thread, but I'm kind of sad to see Women getting so little love. Public Strain was way up there for me as far as albums released in 2010 go. I was really upset when I heard they might be breaking up. Did that question ever get resolved? Are they together, or what?
-
Can I join in on the Wavves hate? That twat doesn't deserve Jay Reatard's old band
What, seriously? That can't be right.
-
Well over half of King of the Beach was fucking good.
-
Deerhoof was my first live show, on my 16th birthday, and it was really disappointing. It was the first day of the Offend Maggie tour. The two opening acts were just bad and went on way too long. I don't know if this was just the kind of crowd that stood around with their arms crossed all the time or if the openers just pissed them off, but the audience just was not giving the band any energy to feed off of. Everyone just seemed pissed at each other. And one dick in front of me kept calling them "Deerfoot."
I still love their records(although I felt Deerhoof Vs. Evil was a bit lacklustre), and i would love to see them with a more responsive audience.
E: I really enjoyed Women's first record, but Public Strain just left me feeling cold.
-
Jay Reatard's crew quit before joining the Wavves dude, so there's no great injustice there.
I'm still waiting for that Juavves (http://www.myspace.com/juavves) full-length over here.
-
Well over half of King of the Beach was fucking good.
Actually it wasn't but thanks for playing.
Tommy, I remember stumbling over that Tape-op article when I was doing a studio internship a few years ago! It was a big part of why I was very strongly in the anti-Deerhoof camp for a while there. I sincerely hope you do manage to find + scan it, I'd like to read it again to see if it evokes the same reaction in me as it did the first time.
-
In addition, fuck this dumb cunt
(http://www.rocklouder.co.uk/images/uploads/wavves300.jpg)
-
E: I really enjoyed Women's first record, but Public Strain just left me feeling cold.
It does have a photograph of a snowstorm on the front.
-
It's okay to not like a band but being insulting or making threads specifically to display ignorance is a bizarre way of operating. Start a thread about music you do like, especially rather than about a band which is so incredibly easy to ignore.
But hate is so much more fun!
-

Public Strain felt like a real improvement, thank god they didn't break up last year.
In addition, fuck this dumb cunt
I wouldn't. Besides, getting deep into rape territory there.
-

To be honest, it was more to express puzzlement at what made them good. That, and to hope people would bring up something with them that was actually more to my liking. Lots of bands have that one song I don't like.
-
Well, the song in question was "+81". Which songs are the opposite of that?
-
Actually, I'd be interested in this answer. That was the first song of theirs I heard.
-
My Deerhoof turning point was "Scream Team" on The Runner's Four. I was halfway through the album and was in the "yeah they rock, but..." category, until I finally understood the role of Satomi's vocals in the band. I then literally stopped the album and started over and it quickly became a favorite of mine.
How are the last two albums? I was pretty much around for Runner's Four and Friend Opportunity but haven't really given a fair shake to Offend Maggie or Deerhoof vs. Evil.
-
I like Offend Maggie a lot. It's good. I actually haven't heard VS. Evil. I am silly that way.
This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FvytQXi-zc) is probably my favorite from Offend Maggie.
-
I am not so familiar with Offend Maggie but I spun Vs Evil a lot. Or... okay iTunes says "twice" but I know I liked it a lot!
Uhhhh I'll come back when I listen to both of them more
-
vs. evil is phenomenal! one of my favourite records of the year so far.
-
In addition, fuck this dumb cunt
(http://www.tacomaworld.com/gallery/data/500/haterade-logo.jpg)
-
So I listened to Runners Four and it's pretty sweet! The guitar in "Twin Killers" kicks so much ass and "Running Thoughts" is a perfect pop song as there ever was
-
Well, the song in question was "+81". Which songs are the opposite of that?
Just listen to Milk Man. Start with "Milk Man" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8zbx_VIPNU)
-
I like Offend Maggie a lot. It's good. I actually haven't heard VS. Evil. I am silly that way.
This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FvytQXi-zc) is probably my favorite from Offend Maggie.
I didn't completely hate that song!
-
this is probably my favorite deerhoof song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gm2bCd1VyUk), if i really had to pick a favorite, which i'd prefer not to
-
Giga Dance is pretty ace. If you haven't given it a chance, please do.
-
that's actually my second favorite one
so awesome
-
In addition, fuck this dumb cunt
Haterade
Yes it is factual to state that I hate Wavves, because he sucks
-
Giga Dance was in my head all day because of this thread.
-
Man I have never listened to much of Apple O before now. I regret everything.
-
it's like that one scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey but instead of a yawning chasm of colored light, it's deerhoof.
-
I would add Reveille to the list of quintessential Deerhoof records. You have the experimental noisy tracks ("No One Fed Me So I Stayed"), the straight-out rock numbers ("Holy Night Fever"), the songs who shift between dynamics ("This Magnificient Bird Will Rise"). What's not to like! I believe it's as good, if not better, but that's my opinion, as Milk Man, Apple O', and The Runners Four.
-

They're great! Just listened to them on your recommendation.
Free download of their EP Cretaceous Calculus here:

It's available in lossless formats too.
