Title: Rift
Post by: Yakob on 10 May 2011, 23:12
Is anyone playing this? I'm currently patching so I can start on my 7 day trial.

From what I've seen on community sites and on Youtube and the like it looks a hell of a lot like WoW, which I stopped playing just before Cata released, so I don't know how I'm gonna like this game. Nevertheless, I'm excited to try it out.

It's similar to WoW, but not in a bad way, I think.

I played the last Open Beta.  I enjoyed it, but it's not the MMO I want to spend money on right now.

The game isn't super unique, but the class system is cool.  Be sure to experiment with classes!  There are so many combinations to try.  Some of them you will hate, some are very fun.  Don't knock the game because you tried one combination that didn't work out for you.

I also played the Rift open beta.  It was OK . . but there was nothing spectacular about it.  Rifts are a cool idea, but the concept gets familiar and uninteresting after doing a few.

Waiting for Guild Wars 2.

Played it, was good if you like classic MMO's that doesn't really stray much from the well-used and finely tuned path. Its well-made, alright storyline, good questing system.

I was entertained, got to max level, did all the dungeons and raids and got all the gear I needed. And after that endgame got pretty boring, it becomes all about dailies.

The region wide events are quite nice in the first few areas, but as with everything else you grow tired of it. The world events are somewhat cool if you ignore the lag problems, but only when playing on a PvP server imo. Else you lose out on half the fun, which is keeping the opposition away. PvP servers offers a lot more, in my humble opinion. The server I played on (EU: Bloodiron) didn't have a ganking problem either, so taking the chances on going on a PvP server may be worth it.

Their class system is one of their major strengths, you get to wear all the different hats with nearly all classes. I was a cleric, and had a tank spec, PvP healer spec, DPS spec and a Dungeon Healer spec. Alllowed for a lot of rotation and trying out different roles without having to start from scratch again. Respeccing was easy and affordable so a lot of my time went to testing, parsing and tuning it to perfection. Which really is half the fun in a MMO, innit.

Anyway, have fun!

Yeah, I'm liking it a lot so far. I've done pretty much all I can on the trial account thing, though, and I'm only 2 or 3 days into it. I've leveled a cleric and rogue up to 15 (the max for trial account) so I'm just gonna have to wait until I have the cash to buy the full version.

The game is different enough from WoW that things are still relatively new looking and interesting. The class system is definitely the best thing it seems to have going for it. I'm liking the idea that all of the play styles that I enjoyed in WoW are completely covered in 2 or maybe even one character. My cleric is probably going to be my main, just because I found starting off as a healer in dungeons and raids and the like in WoW was a good way to learn the mechanics of the fights without changing what I'm supposed to be doing.

Good game, will play again.

Clerics and Rouges are the best if you want to focus on just one Character. Both of them have the possibility to cover all aspects, or nearly at least. While Rouge can't be a pure healer the Bard is an excellent Support healer.

Warriors can: DPS, Tank
Mages can: DPS, Heal
Rouges can: DPS, Support, Tank
Clerics can: DPS, Off-heal, Heal, Tank

The downside with Clerics is as they say "Jack of all trades but master of none", because while they're supposed to be best Healer, there's a lot of people complaining the Mage's Chloromancer is the best healer. However as a Cleric you can switch between 3 pure healing specs and create great syngeries between them, and have several healing roles for different types of uses, for example its good to have a Sentinel/Purifier spec and a Sentinel/Warden spec to switch between, and Sent/Warden is always very welcomed in PvP and can do some massive healing.

Another thing that is good with Clerics and Rouges is that while their abilities do scale, both Healing and Barding doesn't really call for high end gear, just good timing and a good role. So basically you can jump in on much higher tier events in these roles then as a Mage or Warrior. And there's always room for you in a dungeon group, while Warriors seem to have some problems there -if they are DPS that is.

Turned out to be a lot of text... Sorry

Yeah I understand all that, I've done a lot of reading :)

I'm probably going to try healing as full Sentinel first because from what I understand it plays a lot like a holy priest, which was my bread and butter in WoW. Probably going to try to stay away from warden just cause I hate trying to maintain HoTs. I mean, as a secondary soul I'm sure it'll be fine but I don't see my self enjoying full warden.

That is, if I still end up playing at all. Evidently there's an issue specific to ASUS laptops (what I'm playing on) that cause the game to be practically unplayable due to FPS issues half of the time. They'll have to fix that first before I go spend money on this thing.

Generally full of anything is bad for Clerics (except DPS).
You get some points over anyway, I recommend Purifier as your second soul and Warden as third just for the free Healing Spray which is a nice Instant.
Its what I used as my healing spec up until lvl 50. 32/34 Puri/Sent is great and makes some nice synergies. :)

Im sorry to hear about your FPS issues :(
