Title: Google+ - It's like a facebook where you can hide drunk pics from grandma

See circles aren't all that confusing guys. :psyduck:

Introducing the Google+ project: Real-life sharing, rethought for the web

Among the most basic of human needs is the need to connect with others. With a smile, a laugh, a whisper or a cheer, we connect with others every single day.

Today, the connections between people increasingly happen online. Yet the subtlety and substance of real-world interactions are lost in the rigidness of our online tools.

In this basic, human way, online sharing is awkward. Even broken. And we aim to fix it.

We’d like to bring the nuance and richness of real-life sharing to software. We want to make Google better by including you, your relationships, and your interests. And so begins the Google+ project.

Circles

Not all relationships are created equal. So in life we share one thing with college buddies, another with parents, and almost nothing with our boss.

From close family to foodies, we found that people already use real-life circles to express themselves, and to share with precisely the right folks. So we did the only thing that made sense: we brought Circles to software. Just make a circle, add your people, and share what’s new—just like any other day.

Sparks

Healthy obsessions inspire sharing, and we’ve all got one (or two, or three...). Maybe it’s muscle cars, or comic books, or fashion, but the attraction is always the same: it comes up in conversation, we immediately jump in, and we share back and forth with other fans. Often for hours. The trick is getting things started, and getting over that initial hump. Fortunately, the web is the ultimate icebreaker.

The web, of course, is filled with great content—from timely articles to vibrant photos to funny videos. And great content can lead to great conversations. We noticed, however, that it’s still too hard to find and share the things we care about—not without lots of work, and lots of noise. So, we built an online sharing engine called Sparks.

Mobile

These days a phone is the perfect sharing accessory: it's always with you, it's always online, and it's how we stay close with our closest friends. We didn’t want “just” a mobile experience, however, so with Google+ we focused on things (like GPS, cameras, and messaging) to make your pocket computer even more personal.

Hangouts and Huddle

Hangouts: With Google+ we wanted to make on-screen gatherings fun, fluid and serendipitous, so we created Hangouts. By combining the casual meetup with live multi-person video, Hangouts lets you stop by when you're free, and spend time with your Circles. Face-to-face-to-face.

Huddle: Coordinating with friends and family in real-time is really hard in real life. After all, everyone's on different schedules, in different places, and plans can change at any moment. Phone calls and text messages can work in a pinch, but they're not quite right for getting the gang together. So Google+ includes Huddle, a group messaging experience that lets everyone inside the circle know what's going on, right this second.

I've been playing with it for a few days now, and it's really nice.  The built in privacy controls and the design of it make it really easy for me to share cat pics with with my grandma and pictures of last night's party with my friends and never the twain shall meet.  Unless I drunk post, but that's not something google or facebook can prevent.  Hangouts are like tinychat with less dick, which is spectacular, as it makes getting drunk with people on the internet and pretending it's normal social interaction that much less scarring.  I haven't had a chance to try huddles yet, mostly because google+ membership is still incredibly limited, and they only come in handy for coordinating with friends afaict.

It's kinda like twitter and foursquare had a baby and facebook was the black sheep uncle that kinda influenced the child but only in how they conditioned him not to behave.

Right now it's in closed beta (like real beta, not google beta) and people are being let in with no rhyme or reason. Shared posts occasionally take you to the signup page instead of the coming soon page.

So I personally have two questions: A) Is anyone else here on google+? and B) Anyone want me to try to invite them? All I need is an email address.

Follow me! I post about what I'm cooking for dinner and obscure board games. https://plus.google.com/111263269271694146317

So, like regular Facebook but more clique-y. If Hollywood has taught me anything, Mark Z. must be furious.

Mark Z has a Google+ account. There are a fair few of us QC/meebo people on, if you know one of our names you should be able to find some more. :)

I don't plan on making any switch to it but at some point I'll probably sign up, just to see what it's like. It looks interesting from what I've seen.

It's unlikely to replace the monolith that Facebook has become, but stranger things have happened. Facebook dealt a similar blow to myspace, after all. It will mostly hinge on which people decide to join up and whether those people are perceived as cool. With the increasing numbers of older people on Facebook, perhaps that will become the place where we leave grandma and the parents to play Farmville while all the hip youngsters migrate to Google+.

Of course, it's also possible to have two popular social networking sites. Hyves is still dominant in the Netherlands, Hungary has iWiW, and I'm sure most countries have their own little version. That's a little different as it's language-based, of course, but the principle stands. I expect a lot of Dutchies use Hyves for their Dutch friends and Facebook for everyone else. If Google+ (or any social networking newcomer) can wedge itself in as the site for a particular segment of your networking, there's its spearhead. With the 'circles' feature, though, that doesn't seem to be what they're aiming for.

I really want everyone to switch to Circles because Facebook irritates the crap out of me. The UI is appalling and keeps changing each time I figure it out, the privacy settings are arcane really hard to find and I'm constantly afraid that everything I do on the internet is going to get spammed on all my friends' walls without my knowledge. Basically all I use facebook for these days is so it can email me when people send me messages there or post events.

I haven't used Circles yet, but it's hard to imagine something that would be even less comfortable to use than Facebook.

I am constantly concerned when my friends pop up on different pages, or it wants me to like their page on facebook and has my information.

Equally concerning for me is that one day I will accidentally +1 a link by accident when doing a random search.

Yes, but not exactly. In all honesty you just need to mess about with the settings to tell the differences. A lot of what is a great improvement is layouts, ease of changing privacy settings and what is generally a much more extensive set of privacy options in general

The circles thing sounds a lot like what Facebook tried at first - I think their original plan was for people to put all their friends into different groups and interact with them there. It just never happened. If that's because the groups didn't work properly back then (not sure, I got in kinda late), the circles might work, but I think it's just not something people want that badly.

And now FB is messing with chat/messaging yet again with some clunky sidebar thing. Already combining the 2 into one continuous "conversation" is one of the stupidest ideas yet. I used each for very different purposes. Messages for items I particularly wanted to bring to somebody's attention, and which usually had some kind of reference I'd like to be able to find later, chat for just shooting the breeze. I don't want to have to search through a dozen 4-hour chat conversations to find the address somebody messaged me 3 weeks ago.

People actually use facebook chat? I worked out very quickly that it didn't work very well and used msn or skype instead. It's not like it takes more than a few seconds to add a facebook contact to the other, and once done you have a far superior IM system.

I use messages quite a lot though, they are are good for organising and discussing things with people you don't see in real life, without having to load up a clunky separate webmail account.

Hey, now facebook chat uses skype as well, so there you go.

I'm already having much more interesting conversations on plus than anywhere else. If I could follow everyone I follow on twitter on plus I would probably move to plus.

I'm on, but I'm having all sorts of buggy problems with it... anyone else have these:

1. My feed doesn't show up in chronological order. I posted something today at 5:30 and it's sitting at the bottom under someone else's posts that they made from June 29-July 6. Same with the Hangout my husband started today - sitting below stuff from June 29 even.

2. I blocked someone because they post a lot and I really just don't care. But every time I refresh the page, their posts are back. They don't stay blocked.

3. Every time I go to the page or refresh it, it brings up the popup window to enable chat. Doesn't matter if I hit ignore or enable, it comes back every time.

4. My husband added me to a circle but it doesn't show that on my profile under "Have Becky in circles" - but I might be misunderstanding how that works.

The feed is done according to some google algorithm, like facebooks "top news" rather than recent posts, so it's not in chronological order for everyone. Apparently plenty of people ave complained about that, so i think google are working on giving a chronological option.

As for the other, I haven't had any of that.

I'm curious, what makes this the social network you want to join, rather than any other?

That's a good question, actually. I'd like to join such networks in general, but I haven't found one yet which didn't annoy me from the very beginning or didn't turn out as uninteresting for me very soon.
My reasons not to really join other networks until now were "visually annoying, annoying/difficult to use, focuses on things I don't care about, ToS made me angry, not enough members (who are interested in the same things as I am), looks like it's members are generally retarded", and I don't find that's true for Google until now.

For Google+, those hangouts, sparks and easy-to-use circles look especially interesting to me - if they work as well as their advertisement tells me.

Yeah, a lack of negatives is what I'm seeing a lot.

Apparently Google is operating another social networking site: Orkut (http://www.orkut.com/About.aspx). It has tens of millions of users according to this article (http://www.arnnet.com.au/article/392970/google_orkut_will_co-exist_google). 50% of its users are in Brazil, 20% in India, 17% in the US and the rest of the users are below 1% representation. I've never heard of it, has anyone else?

Elysiana, you will never see which circles you are placed in by someone else, and no one else will be able to see what circles you placed them into. That is the whole point of the privacy stuff.

As for know seeing who has saved you in the first place, I have never tried to find this out, but if that is what you mean, I guess you could send them a message about it.
Title: Re: Google+ - It's like a facebook where you can hide drunk pics from grandma
Post by: Elysiana on 10 Jul 2011, 07:06
No, now it's apparently working because I show that 6 people have me in circles. It doesn't tell what circle I'm in, but it does show that they have me in SOME circle. Before, it wasn't even showing that.

As far as things being in chrono order, they seem to be popping up in that order now. I guess what was happening was anytime I added someone, their posts came first in my feed for a while, then later they got reorganized into chrono order. No idea.

The bugs I had earlier seem to have gotten worked out. I have to admit, Facebook is much *prettier* than Google+ so far. G+ just takes up so much room - larger font, that huge +1 button, hard to differentiate quickly between posts and replies. I'm hoping they'll streamline it a bit better as far as visuals go.

Also I feel stupid saying I "plus-oned" a post.

Eh, I'll still give this thing a shot. I don't really know anyone here but if you want to add me I'm elysianashes@

So, I imported all my fb friends in the hopes that i can just switch to something new just for the sake of change. WHo's for change? Circles is good. I Love that flowchart in the beginning of the thread. + needs work. But it IS beta init? isn't also fun to see a big giant like fb fall? Imagine, for a second or 161 that one day GOOGLE falls. Wrap your cerebrum around that because for me it's easy to see fb falling to google but not for google to fall to anything. Bing? Yahoo? Is there any contender? Does this realization fuel the google hater's argument? Ehh I'll dance with the devil. Even take shots with him.

I'm slowly starting to like Google+ but other than the people on here, less than 20 meat life friends are using this, so I don't use it much.

Maybe someone can answer this for me, who is tria wisam?

They added me too... So have a few other people whose names I don't recognize. So. Unless you few tell me who you are, I'm not adding you. So there.

Her, Miguel Castillo, and Scott King have added me, and I have no idea who they are. Most of there stuff is gifs of Google + being better then facebook.

I am probably just an idiot, but I am not a fan of going through all the postings of someone and muting them instead of being able to block them all together.

You can block out all a person's posts; I have blocked this Scott King guy.  It's the bottom option in the menu attached to a post.

I have had more than a few random people add me to a circle on Google+, or, prior to G+ start following me on Google Buzz.  There are just people out there who like to keep tabs on strangers I guess?  I am glad that you get notifications when this happens so it is easy enough to block them if need be. Creepers gonna creep!

Linds, I don't even use FB anymore in spite of how few people are on G+. I have got Bill Shatner, Wil Wheaton, and Felicia Day in my "Following" circle and that is pretty much good enough for me.

I follow those guys on Twitter as well as G+, so... If all the people I followed on Twitter were on G+, I'd be set. (John Cleese, Steve Martin, Kate Beaton...)

As usual, I'm late to the game, but I'm doing this now.

I circled some of you, but haven't tried to be comprehensive, just getting the ball rolling here and with other people I know in real life and online.

Yes. I was running out of stalking victims on my other social networking sites.
