Title: RIP Steve Jobs (1955-2011)
Post by: SirDudley on 05 Oct 2011, 16:49
Not quite sure where to put this, but if this is the wrong place, I understand.

Well, Steve Jobs has passed. The tech world has lost a giant icon. And a legion of fanboys have lost their God. May he rest in peace.

He certainly did as much for the computing industry as anyone.  I don't care much for the company that Apple has become, but we will certainly miss Steve.

He was definitely one of the legends of the modern IT world and will be sorely missed.

I was never an apple fanboy, but you really can't deny the innovations that Apple brought while under his rule.

Looks like the iPhone 4S was the end of Steve's Jobs.

Sad news, though sadly no surprise.

There is another thread on this in the CLIKC forum, but I have left this here for those who don't normally visit it.

Heck, we could have even slipped a thread into the Music subforum, too. He was the one who helped change digital music and made indie bands more accessible to their fanbase.

That is true. I guess when it comes to a board arranged like this one is, there is no definitive place to put a RIP thread for Steve Jobs. His influence is all over the place. Very few can reach that level of influence on the world.

Which is something, in and of itself.

But the ipod revolutionalised (? it's late) the mp3 player, and more importantly, made it shiny and must-have.  They'd been the playthings of the few before then!

From the Steve Jobs thread on an organ forum I frequent:

Quote
In the mid 1980’s Mr. Jobs bought a huge house, The Jackling House. He stayed there about ten years and after that the house deteriorated. He wanted to demolish the house and build a new one. After some legal battles he got permission and the house was demolished earlier this year. But before that enthusiasts eventually got permission to remove the huge organ that was part of the house. See:

Does anyone think Apple has a chance without him? It fell apart without him before.

It's always possible.

Last time round they pushed him out thought without really realising the consequences of doing so and they payed a very heavy price for doing so.  One would hope that they have learned form that mistake and would have put something in place to make sure that this time round it doesn't happen.  Especially as they, and Steve have known that his passing was on the cards for some time.

They definitely learned from that mistake, and are trying to keep his spirit (http://www.npr.org/2011/10/06/141124767/with-no-steve-jobs-will-apple-lose-its-juice).

In case you haven't figured it out, I am a RABID Milwaukee Brewers fan.

You may have heard, in some of the news stories around the team, that the players are doing something called "beast mode". When one of the players does something important - driving in a key run, making a great play to end the inning, whatever - they put their arms out wide and make like they're trying to scare the onlooker. It's sometimes accompanied by a loud "AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH" scream, especially when it's done by our CF Nyjer "Tony Plush" Morgan.

The whole thing apparently started when our star 1B, Prince Fielder, noted his love for a particular character from an animated movie: Sulley from the Disney/Pixar movie Monsters Inc. Sulley apparently has the same stance when he goes into the "real world" to scare children.

Of course, Pixar was started as a joint project with Disney, led by one... Steve Jobs.

I would suspect that, if Steve ever heard of this before he died, he would be greatly amused.

I hope that the guys at Pixar are taking notes, though - maybe they should get Prince to voice a character in one of their upcoming movies?

It was actually Prince Fielder's daughter that really liked Sulley.

Go Brewers!

Pixar was founded as a division of Lucasfilm in 1979. Jobs bought it in 1986 for $5M.
