One of my friends and I have been arguing on and off for awhile about his racism against the french (except it's not really racism because the french aren't a race, but whatever), and yesterday I said that I would respond to the next person who asked me if I was racist with "well, of course! I don't think gorillas are smart enough to understand the current human sociopolitical structure, so I believe they shouldn't have voting rights" and he said "but gorilla could be interpreted as a racial slur for black people, like chimp". Confused, I said, "so, what about orangutans?" and he said that was better. "Gibbons?" Much better. "Oo, what about lemurs?" and he said "Best. No one ever tried to insult someone by calling them a lemur."

Wow. Those things are....not so cute. They scare me a teensy bit.

I just found out today that lemurs and tarsiers are both primates. I thought they were some sort of rodent. haha. Thank you, Internet.

Here is another primate....I think this little guy is freaking adorable.

Post by: Kenyahp on 23 Mar 2012, 10:42
I hate ferrets :( My mom tells a story about having a guinea pig and a ferret as a kid. The ferret got out and ate the face off the guinea pig.

I love guinea pigs more than anything in the world and I was five when she told me that story. I was horrified for life.

I love Hedgehogs, however. Also, hamsters. Because we used to feed our hamsters meal worms. Cool. as. shit.

I miss having ferrets.

Edit: Also, I'm pretty sure they are not actually animals, but quantic poop machines.

Yeah, I feel the same way about one of my guy friends.

On a side note: I totally just bought a bunch of cat toys. Like, an unreasonable number of cat toys. And I bought them because my dad wouldn't let me buy a guinea pig. So I was like "ha, I can still spend unreasonable amounts of money on an animal.". Because I have a cat. And she hates me.

Aw, I love guinea pigs. Mom always complained, but I know she got a kick out of them too.

Example - We had just gotten a new little girl the night before. I got up uber early due to the bladder, and wandered into the kitchen.

Mom - "Did you name the new pig yet?"

Me, groggily - "Noooo... why?"

Mom - "How about we call her 'Little Shit'?"

Me - "Uh... okay. I'm going back to bed."

And from then on, she was dubbed Little Shit.

In my experience the main reason for children to have guinea pigs is to learn about sudden unexpected death.

My guinea pig lived for 8 years. I am led to understand this is...unusual? Dude had ass tumors at one point, too. Got it removed. And then he was like "cool, thanks, bro. Gonna live FOREVER NOW". Then my best friend found him dead and I was sad.

My dad accidentally killed my brother's hamster when he was 7 and I was 3 and my other brother was 4. It was traumatizing. We knew what death was, because we had hella animals. But, my dad killed it by brutal crushing it by diving to try to catch it as it ran by.

Iguanas are chill.

Because I have a cat. And she hates me.
I have two cats. They hate each other but love me. Maybe you could get another cat? Sneak in a kitten. No one can resist a wide-eyed little kitten. Maybe not even the older cat.
Title: Re: Lemurs!
Post by: Carl-E on 24 Mar 2012, 20:46
Older cats hate  kittens.  They remind them of the fleeting nature of popularity.

More importatly, when the kittens reach young adulthood, they start beating up the older cats, stealing their toys and treats, usurping their place at the food dish, etc.  It's weird.

(we have 4 cats, one 15, one's 14, one's 3 and the last is 2, and it's really weird watching how the younger ones gang up on the older ones)

I like your reasoning, and it probably helps explain why the two cats don't get along. The younger early on started pouncing on the older, and he seemed dominant. For a while. Now, I think she's re-established dominance.

The last time the neighbours had a litter of kittens, one of them came wandering over to our house. Our own cat was looking at it like it was demon spawn.

Also, I had a dwarf hamster once. I went to the vet with it because of a weird lump on its ear. They decided to give it an injection for something, which cost twelve-year-old me €25. Then the incompetent shit of an assistant put it right into its lung. The hamster died of suffocation later that day. I now distrust veterinary medicine even more than I distrust human medicine.

We have three cats. Two are my mom's. One is mine. Mine lives indoors and whenever she gets scared, which is often, she runs to me for comfort. Then slaps me in the face if I pick her up. She was a stray we brought in about 10 years ago. Shes about 12 or so. Albert is also 12. He was born here, so we've had him a while. Then, little Alvin is 3. He was born here, also, and immediately started picking on Albert for his rightful place as king. He tried picking on Emma, my cat, and she smacked him so hard he runs from her.

My dad won't let me get anymore pets. Especially not kittens. He hates kittens. And cats. and my happiness.

Zingoleb- You crack me up, seriously. Although, for the record, when I was about 10, we used to have a creek running next to our house. My guinea pig and I were chilling outside and he made a mad break for the creek. I think he was trying to kill himself.

My friends do the same thing. Maybe, when exposed to me, animals feel too much joy and just can't handle it...

Ferrets are really freaking cool, but I just can't get over the stink. A friend of mine had one and...urrfghhhhh..

I'm starting to think that all rodents are just little poop machines. My 2 guinea pigs are as well. Once during floor time we calculated that each of them poops once every three minutes*.

Wild hedgehogs, no. As far as I know, its illegal to keep a wild animal as a pet (Depending on the locality). You could have an Africa Pygmy Hedgehog (or domesticated hedgehogs as they're commonly known) as a pet.

Just a few things about them though;

Cousin had one as a kid, and she liked it. Poor thing ended up needing to be put down for WHS though.

Title: Re: Lemurs!
Post by: TheEvilDog on 26 Mar 2012, 12:57
Not an expert, but I looked after it a couple of times and I got a 20 minute lecture from my uncle about looking after it. They live between 3 to 8 years, but they more typically live 4 to 6 years. When my uncle and aunt had it put down, it was about 5 years old, the WHS meant that they had to puree its meals because  it couldn't feed itself, or even move to its feeding dish.

My mother occasionally looked after the odd hedgehog from the garden in cold weather, bringing it in to bed down in the cat's box next to the old coke-fired boiler.  What I can tell you from experience is that wild hedgehogs are the most flea-ridden beasts you could ever encounter...

Chinchillas!
Title: Re: Lemurs!
Post by: Kenyahp on 28 Mar 2012, 09:20
When I was an eighth grader, I took a class on small animal care. We had chinchillas, guinea pigs, hamsters, birds, lizards, the whole nine yards.

The two chinchillas had some babies and then we got rid of the daddy chinchilla. And, I guess that made the mama chinchilla super sad, because she bit through the metal cage (chinchillas bite through metal a surprising amount) and ran away. We couldn't find her, so had to take care of her babies. Two months later, the janitors find her, dead, in one of the air ducts and I was sad. We were all sad.

I have a lot of depressing stories like this hahaha. Maybe I shouldn't be on the cute animal thread...

Funny thing about air vents. They have a tendency to dry out small carcasses before there's really any noticeable smell. Now, before anyone gets any ideas, humans have far to much material for this, so don't hide the bodies in the air ducts

This coming from someone who has lost many a hamster to the heating vents in our house.

I have a couple of cats and in parts of the house they can't get to, mice move in in the winter. Every now and then, there's a kind of dusty decomposition odor, not quite to the level of objectionable. Then it goes away. Usually I notice it in the bedroom, and at night a ceiling fan dissipates it quite well.

Pretty sure we have rodents of some kind in our walls. I hear them scratching around at night. And yeah, every once in a while there's that smell, like you described.

We have three cats that are terrible at catching mice, but I guess the smell of cats keep the mice at bay.

Unrelated note, out youngest cat brought in a baby rabbit last night and it died overnight. Poor thing.

The mice came in when our retirement home was new, and their favorite place was in the cathedral ceiling above the bedroom.
The scratching was one thing. But they apparently carried acorns into the space, and one night, I heard repeated rolling sounds. The little bastards must have been bowling!
I dont mind killing the mice, whether by poison, trap or cat. But I hate to see any other harmless critter injured or dying, and that sometimes means running over an injured animal on the road with a flapping tail. It also means fishing struggling dragonflies out of the pool. I don't think I was always so tender-hearted, but living in the country and age probably resulted in the change.
So the death of the baby rabbit would be sad in my household too.

There was an abandoned kitchen manufacturer near where I live and a few years ago, they started demolishing it. Now, the area I live in had this place, then there was us, and then there is this saltmarsh right next to the river leading to the ocean, which means those two areas are perfect places for rats to breed. The street was lucky because it seemed the majority of rats at the manufacturer made their way to the saltmarsh and away from everyone.

Except one little bastard.

One rat decided to make its home on the street. And it made sure to let you know that, as one cat found out. Now, I know my neighbours tried everything to get rid of it, one tried humane traps, another got a Kerry Blue specifically to kill it and we tried traps baited with chocolate (Before anyone laughs, its a legitimate trick, they prefer sweeter things, like jams. Mice prefer them too.), and one broke out the rat poison. Nothing worked, the rat apparently jumped onto the humane trap and left a "present" on top of it, the Kerry Blue couldn't find it and poison was taken away because of concerns that someone's pet would accidentally eat it. Oh...and the little bastard mocked us but stealing the chocolate off the trap without setting it off. We'd hear him skittering around outside, could never see him though.

This went on for about a week until the day I did some gardening and was putting the shovel back into the gardening shed when I heard this "SCHLUNK!" sound.

Needless to say, I didn't look down, went off, got a black bag, shovelled what was left into the bag and threw it into the bin.

End of the rat.

Actually, he's a tenor, and he's not even shaped like that - it's more of an attitude thing.

I read this, I swear, as an abandoned KITTEN factory.

And thought "well, this story must be fun" then was utterly confused.

Well, the spiders are cute, too.  Especially Mr psychedelic water-drop.

But after all the trigger discussions around here, why go trigger happy?

I miss having guinea pigs, ours lasted a really long time too. Eight years on average.
