Here's the link to last year's thread: Wink, wink, 2011! (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,25859.0.html)

Consider also the Mixtape Thread (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,22467.0.html).

This is a Nashville band I've been following really closely since I found their first ep here a few years ago. Their new full length just leaked, and it's pretty fucking sweet. It's country-folk with a washy-electronic accents here and there. I feel like this is the most appropriate place it could be posted.

yeah I had considered sharing the OM a couple weeks ago, but after listening to it, decided otherwise. That said, I am still interested to hear anyone's positive review of Paralytic Stalks.
-
I like Paralytic Stalks more than their last two but it's not close to their best work.
-
I think I've hated just about everything I've ever heard by them, except for Hissing Fauna, which is one of my all time favorite albums ever. What.

I made this a new thread for this year.
-
I kinda thought the thread was dead, with no new posts since Jan 28.
Is MF cracking down? :?
-
Nothing to do with MF, just a matter of who's contributing or not. The main crowd who used to feed this thread went to another forum last summer; but they have not started a comparable thread there. So this is much slower now - but there is still interesting stuff sometimes.
-
This thread has come so far since Emilio and I started it way back when.
I'm at work right now, but I think I need to make a bit of a megapost, since I haven't uploaded anything in quite a while.
-
I used to take advantage of this thread a lot, and it's kind of sad to see it so devoid of life. I have a bunch of my stuff on my To Upload checklist (including Air's new soundtrack album, Django Django, Porcelain Raft, and Grimes), so hopefully I'll get around to that soon and give a little back to the community and whatnot.

That is their self-titled EP from wayyyyyyyy back in 2001. Supposedly they're putting out a new EP in April, though!

This is an instrumental album I made in 24 hours. I'm a hip hop producer.. This is just a collection of spacey instrumentals. Relatively repetitive beats, but if you dig beats, check it out.

I think everyone should listen to Dirty Three
"Melancholy instrumental trio Dirty Three formed in Melbourne, Australia in 1992, led by classically trained violinist Warren Ellis, who began writing and performing music for art openings and plays and also tenured in the groups Blackeyed Susans, Paranoid, and the Nursing Mothers." - Allmusic
Basically Dirty Three is the trio you'll dig if you like Grails, some A Silver Mt. Zion, a bit of Grinderman/Bad Seeds and a touch of Bonnie "Prince" Billy. They are absolutely amazing at what they do, instrumental atmospheric rockmusic, especially Jim White on the drums spans from doing machinegun-like beats to perfectly timed snares. Everything he does is important to the overall experience of these two emotional journeys.

Protip: if you want to expose likeminded music lovers to your favorite jams, please adhere to Paul's suggestion and give a description of what it is! (and no, putting 'awesome' in italics below the album art doesn't count!) Sure, I may get flak for "adhering to the trappings of genre tags" or whatever, but frankly, I hate 90% of electronic music, and I don't want to waste time/bandwidth/exposure to risk of legal consequences downloading some dubstep tracks I'm not even going to like in the first place. Please be courteous and help your fellow listeners out!

This was, surprisingly, not simple to find. Unless you've been living under a rock, this band needs no introduction, and where the hell would I begin anyway?...

Honestly, I haven’t even listened to this all the way through yet.
But it’s the fucking Shins—or at least James Mercer, who’s pretty much the Shins anyway—so you have to download it, if only to see if it can possibly live up to your expectations of The New Shins Record™.

Checking that out now. I'm already sold by the lyrics in your signature; Tyranny of Distance is one of my favorite albums ever.
I hate to be all self-whorey but seriously, check out my band "Troubador" (http://troubador.bandcamp.com) on bandcamp. We just put out a new single about a week ago, and it's available for free download, and I am more than happy to put it up for whoever digs it. I don't like reviewing anything I was involved in the making of, but somebody told me it sounded "like the Violent Femmes angrily confronted the Beatles in an alley." This person is a friend of mine, though, so I guess you'll just have to see for yourself before you trust that opinion, now won't you?

I strongly agree with the Violent Femmes comparison... completely disagree with the Beatles part... would more so say "what if the Violent Femmes joined and then were promptly kicked out of Elephant 6."

Haha nope, it's the right one, I just name my links creatively so they won't get taken down. Seashore Yurt is Beach House, and Blossom is Bloom.

Sample: Brains (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyxzjF8IjE8)
http://www.mediafire.com/?kn4xharo18iznve
The much anticipated followup to one of my favorite albums of 2010, Twin Hand Movement. Now with more synths! Compared to that album, there are fewer songs that immediately grab you, but Nootropics slowly but surely works its way into your head through its motoric Krautrockiness and Jana Hunter's dreamy vocals. Just as the songs themselves take their time to build momentum to reach glorious heights, the album is a grower. Highly recommended.

Something about a first-poster named "Sars" makes me not want to open that at all. Especially a rapidshit link. The rest of you lot make your own decisions, but that's my 2 cents.
-
The links are fine; the poster is in the UK and has a proper name in clear as part of their email address (but I guess you can't see some parts of their profile that I can). I don't know why their chosen username is the acronym for a virus causing severe pneumonia, but maybe it means something else to other people.
The music won't turn the world on its head, but is pleasant enough of its sort - I like the Russian folksong that ends the album, though I'd be adjusting the checks in the piano action if I had a chance!

Fair enough but nope the link is genuine (sorry I couldn't find my M/F account details) and my nickname.... oh well it's a long story but it's just a nickname 8-)

It's actually slang from the South East of France and that was long time before the actual SARS virus appeared :-D

Agreed. That definitly won't turn the world on its head but it's still a pretty good album (much better than the one she did after) and her loss is a shame.
She used to play with Smog/Bill Callahan and actually Bill Callhan features most of the songs of this album.

Either today or tomorrow I will be uploading the new Sigur Rós, the new Jack White, and the new Spiritualized.

Jack White - Blunderbuss (2012 - Alt. Rock - 320kbps + Music Video [track 14])
Blunderbuss opens with a bunch of layered organ riffs, which slowly settle down into the Stax-informed groove of “Missing Pieces.” On the song, White does plenty of deeply impressive organ and guitar soloing, but it’s all done in the service of an unhurried shuffle of a song, the sort of thing that makes for ideal road-trip music. And that sets the tone for the rest of the album. Throughout, White gets funkier than I’ve ever heard him do, but he does it without making a big deal of it. The riffage on “Freedom At 21″ has a real bite to it, but White still gives it plenty of room to breathe. First single “Love Interruption” is an excellent Appalachian country-soul wailer that’s only grown on me since it first hit the internet. “Weep Themselves To Sleep” is a big acoustic stomp. -- Tom Breihan for Stereogum

Soooo I know I totally reneged on my last promise on this thread about uploading Jack White, Spiritualized, and Sigur Rós. Someone's already beaten me to Jack White, but if you guys are still interested in the others I will oblige.
But in the meantime, I have a peace offering in hopes that you will forgive me my past transgressions. Fresh off the leak press today.

I've not.

Me neither!

I do but the only rip available as far as I can tell is really low quality. If you don't have it but are planning on downloading it, I say wait until a much better rip comes along. Even the low quality version out now is pretty excellent though; it's a return to form after their seriously underwhelming previous album.
-
It may have been a shitty listen, but I saw them tour after that album came out, and the new songs were just..fun, live. Fun.

Finn Riggins - Benchwarmers (2012)
http://www.m/f.com/?45b6gk7zxtb50ib
The Boise music scene has been pretty tits lately. Eric Gilbert of Finn Riggins just organized Treefort Music Festival, an awesomely successful event. Finn Riggins has toured pretty extensively with Built to Spill, and they just had an EP release party on record store day. So, here is their latest math-indie short.
-
my gosh but it's been quiet round these parts. guess i can't complain, as I've been no help myself. well, anyhow, here's a little something that just turned 40:
My parents used to play this record and "Thick as a Brick" round the house when I was a toddler. Back in high school I listened to them again and found most of their 70s output to my liking (and for good or ill, i'm not a fan of prog or the 70s in general). And now, fifteen years from then, Auqualung has an anniversary and gets, not remastered, but remixed- for clarity, not for any kind of re-imagining or anything. it's the same record, but it's an order of magnitude sonically superior to any previous release.
anyway, if you like Tull, this is a real treat. And if you don't know if you like Tull, this is probably the album that it's best to start with. And if you only know the tracks played these past 40 years on radio (the title track and "Locomotive Breath" most likely) the rest of the album ought to be something of a revelation for you.
3 links 'cause it's a 2 disc set with a bunch of tracks from singles and eps released the same year (as well as a sparse selection of alternate versions). And it's in ALAC (from which it can easily be converted into any other lossless or lossy formats you desire)

http://www.mediafire.com/?h321p7eoh2mqrro
Japanese rock band The Pillows supplied the soundtrack for the frenetic anime FLCL (Fooly-Cooly). This album has the full versions of the main songs rather than those edited for the anime, and so is a good introduction to the band including their best-known numbers.

Also, this:
Rules for this thread:
- Please ensure your tags are correct, and that you have specified both Artist/Album in your post. It's good to give pointers to what the music is like, too.
- No hot-linking images or albums. You can re-host images at your favourite image hosting site (e.g. http://imageshack.us).
- Upload your files in either a .zip or a .rar archive to MF, in multiple parts if the album is over 200Mb. The reason for this is that we know MF is safe and efficient and allows multiple downloads. The ads on other sites, such as Sendspace, not uncommonly contain viruses on the page. Get yourself checked out.
- Post your link using code tags. It's the # icon above the policeman emoticon. This helps prevent the links from being traced back to the forums, lowering the chance that the wrong people notice the thread, potentially threatening Jeph with legal action.
- The forum software automatically changes the name MF to avoid being found by search engines - remember to correct it when using the URLs you find here.
- Please do NOT request albums; this includes requests for re-uploads. If you miss it, try looking for it somewhere else.

The new Sun Kil Moon album, for anyone who's interested. It's a lot more light-hearted than Kozelek's usual stuff. Most of the songs are just mellow little pieces with acoustic guitar and vocals, so nothing epic like "Salvador Sanchez" is to be found here. It's still a very worthwhile listen if you're a fan of his previous work.
-

There's a lot of good alt-country out there right now. Like he said, you should try out Austin Lucas if you liked the album.

I've been grabbing music from here for quite a while, and never had the chance to post anything.
http://www.m/f.com/?tmtkiidzozm
This is "Kdo se je zbral?", the 1994 album by Zmelkoow. They're a Slovene rock band. A few years back, I gave relationship advice to some Slovene girl on IRC, and she was really happy how it turned out, and she asked if she could do anything for me, so I said "you got any Slovene music?", so that's how I discovered Zmelkoow.
To quote from Last FM:
Zmelkoow are a cult Slovenian rock (“baroque-folk-jazz” and something in betwen) band from the coastal region. The “core” band consists of Gorazd “Goga” Sedmak (vocals, guitar), Žare Pavletič (bass guitar) and Aleš Koščak (drums, percussions) but they also have supporting team which are: Aleksandra Čermelj (vocal, violine), Eva Brajkovič (vocal) and Anuša Podgornik (synth, vocal, flute). They are known for funny and crazy songs and that despite this, the lyrics have a lot of deep metaphorical meaning.
I don't have a picture, sorry. But they're good.
edit: oops, forgot the album name and year.

Oh man, thanks for listening/enjoying guys! You aren't the first to make a Joyce Manor comparison, and that's awesome, they're a great band.
We're hard at work on getting ready to record some new material. I think that the new stuff is significantly cooler than the older stuff: more complex songwriting, more intense everything, etc. I'll be sure to post it when it's done.

Yesterday my choir sang its summer concert - on the unremarkable theme, for this year, of music for royal occasions! It went quite well (though we discovered afterwards that one of the 12 pieces had not been performed at the royal occasion that we thought it had!). You can listen or download here (http://cassland.org/Jubilee.html); I'm singing (2nd) bass.
We ended with Parry's Blest Pair of Sirens, which is in eight parts and a big, big sing for a choir of only two dozen or so - but the audience certainly thought we pulled it off.
P.S. Do check out the program if you're interested - it's really quite informative (especially on the Parry) - because I wrote it, of course!
-
You sang some of my favourite pieces there - I particularly like the Rutter, the Purcell, the Durufle and of course the Parry. I've sung a lot of those and some are very hard! It sounds like you enjoyed singing it.
We're currently recording a CD of music by Alan Bullard. I don't think I'll be able to put any of it up on here but if there are any taster snippets anywhere I'll link to them.

Two albums for y'all, both of them absolutely fantastic and serious contenders for AOTY, in my opinion:
America - Dan Deacon
(http://img807.imageshack.us/img807/93/dandeacon1.jpg)
http://www.M/F.com/?5661d11akqmmg9x
^Super energetic electronic/indie/pop music, has some really catchy songs and nice arrangements (favorites are Guilford Avenue Bridge, True Thrush, Lots, and Manifest. Rails is a very interesting/subtle track, too). Better than Bromst.
Ocean Roar - Mount Eerie
(http://img839.imageshack.us/img839/3821/news1206mounteerie.jpg)
http://www.M/F.com/?ct35mcowpuanc9e
^More stuff from Microphones frontman Phil Elverum. This one is closer to Wind's Poem than it is to Clear Moon. Lots of black metal-esque guitar and quiet, searching vocals. The instrumentals on this album are great.
-
Damn but that new Dan Deacon album is good to run on the treadmill to. Thanks for the link!
-
Is the Dan Deacon anything like Bromst? I didnae like it.
-
Oneman - Fabriclive 64 (2012) [Fabric]
UK Bass/garage/2-step
http://www.M/F.com/?5aodmhzcb2u79qo
(http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/7992/onemanart060812.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/24/onemanart060812.jpg/)
As bright as Oneman's torch burns for The Simpsons and the almighty ganja, it blazes even brighter for the distinctly British brand of hybrid house known as UK garage (or 2-step). The genre's trademark bump 'n' flex is all over this Rinse FM DJ's latest mix for the Fabriclive series, which pairs underground anthems with fresh cuts from a new breed of (mostly British) bass wunderkinder. Party-rocking is Oneman's strong suit, and he expertly lays out the cards here, drawing connections between new tracks from Distance, Pearson Sound, and Joy Orbison and the late-'90s/early-'00s cuts that have undoubtedly inspired them.
-
Jacques Greene - Ready EP (2012) [3024]
house/garage/bass
http://www.mediafire.com/file/o1hm6iiccgzxd06
(http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/6171/00jacquesgreeneready302.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/402/00jacquesgreeneready302.jpg/)
If there was ever any question as to whether Jacques Greene could continue to evolve and innovate after making such a big splash when he first appeared on the scene, his latest EP should go a long way towards putting any lingering doubts to rest. Landing somewhere in between the R&B-soaked burners which propelled his ascent up the bass-music ladder and the more elongated, introspective pieces...which have come along more recently, the Ready EP is a lush, alluring collection of masterful club music.
TNGHT (Hudson Mohawke x Lunice) - TNGHT EP (2012) [Warp/LuckyMe]
hip-hop/electronic
http://www.mediafire.com/?mf6o6oc9d3i105y
(http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/2565/tnght20cover.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/812/tnght20cover.jpg/)
While their contemporaries experiment with footwork loops, yacht rock, and 1970s prog, TNGHT zero in on rap's fixation on the loud and chaotic...TNGHT may not come from the American rap scene (Lunice is in Montreal, while HudMo's Ross Birchard is based in Glasgow), but their connection to it is clear. Lunice and Birchard have great ears for what's what and who's making it: their engaging and well-curated hour-long mix for Diplo's BBC show ranged from the mush-mouthed grit of Florida's Spaceghostpurrp to Chicago's recent wave of teenage antagonism (Chief Keef, Sasha Go Hard) without showing any signs of dilettantism. Their self-titled debut EP for Warp and LuckyMe spans 16 minutes of some of the year's most brazen, positively huge hip-hop sounds.
And here's an official link to TNGHT's BBC mix referenced in the quote:

Hi folks!
Thank you. This thread has shown me worlds I never knew existed. Cheesy, but true. I've haven't felt like I had anything to contribute because I owe a great deal of the music I find to this forum.

Alt-J sound like a bunch of young pretentious art students making indie music - which is exactly what they are. The album's good though, just a shame their fans seem to be 99% 15-year-old hipsters.
-
Why does it matter who their other fans are?

It's important when they're all up in my grill at concerts.

http://www.mediafire.com/?mx4g29xqs8915r5
Here's my favorite song off of it:
[soundcloud]http://soundcloud.com/deathgrips/death-grips-no-love[/soundcloud]
Zach Hill on an electronic drumset, plus another dude making bizarre beats, and MC Ride screaming in your face about being a badass motherfucker. It's just as weird as you would expect it to be. Oh, the album art I posted is censored; it was originally just a dick with the album title written on it.
-
Woah that Death Grips album is awesome. It's strange as hell, but I'm really digging it. Maybe gonna see them live now, although I can see that being more weird than good.
-
You should check out their other two. I'll get links for them at some point, but their other two are better albums. Ex-Military is their first, it's got about half super catchy songs, mostly a ton of fun. Their second, The Money Store, is really dark, but the hooks are BOSS on it. This most recent one is just straight up bizarre, I don't know how I feel about it yet.

Maserati - Maserati VII

Their first album since the death of Jerry Fuchs.

So I'd uploaded this for someone else but hey I remembered you guys while it's still on my clipboard! You would think releasing three albums in a year would wear down your production of good music, but he's still on fucking point.

now i know some of those you may not have any interest in, but they're my newest acquisitions and i am quite fond of them, aside from about half of the taylor swift album, but still.
-
Worth noting, that Frank Turner album is not new material, but rather a hand-picked compilation of mostly older stuff.
If you've never heard him before, it's a great starting point!
-
that's what i thought too. i just found out about frank turner about 2 months ago when i saw him live with a friend. and he blew my mind. i came home and obsessively found everything i could of his. this is the newest release, but not new. lots of good material though.

Sic Alps - Sic Alps (230 kbps avg)

Alps! They need somebody. Alps! Not just anybody.
Aiming for the toppermost of the poppermost, Sic and the gang wave their mangled wand — and lo! The hits just keep on a-comin'. Self-titled just it's just their selves. This could be the album of the year — doesn't matter what year you're reading this either. Sic Alppeal is eternal.

If you enjoy, support here.
http://www.dragcity.com/products/sic-alps
Sic Alps have always seemed like an especially and uniquely Californian band to me. To my frayed east-coast nerves, Mike Donovan has sounded impossibly calm for the band’s entire body of work, but their delicately distorted palette and deconstructed, shambolic rhythms betray a single-mindedness that I usually associate with New England. That seemingly oxymoronic relaxed focus has always been something for a psychedelic-minded musician to aspire to, and it rarely sounds more attainable than on Sic Alps.
Donovan’s arrangements have come a long way since Sic Alps’ days as a two-piece, when everything was washed in fuzz and reverb, nearly to the point of inaudibility. The strings, keys and layered guitar sounds on Sic Alps show that the band — including dummer Douglas Armour, bassist Tim Hellman and former Comets on Fire electrician Noel von Harmonson — is interested in more than treading water, and by invoking the mid-career self-titled record, it’s clear Donovan thinks the band is onto something. This progression, and the sonic and stylistic clarity that comes with it, has ambitiously refined Sic Alps’ take on a California-by-way-of-Canterbury sound. “Rock Races” is cinematic and moody walking-home music, and “Moviehead” kind of sounds like The Monkees, but they’re both great; they work together in part because of Donovan’s guilelessness, and in part because Sic Alps as a project has had the patience to craft an identity where both styles sound equally plausible. (It seems appropriate to mention here that the Sic Alps singles compilation is called A Long Way Around To a Shortcut.)
Considering Ty Segall is an on-and-off member of the band, I’m not about to call anyone out for mentioning Sic Alps in the same breath as west-coast contemporaries with whom their music has basically nothing in common. Sic Alps’ thoughtfulness distinguishes them, though, and it’s begun to pay dividends by allowing Donovan to experiment with barely-there piano tracks like finale “See You On the Slopes” without seeming like a dilettante. John Dwyer’s ambition and attention to detail are similar, but his Oh Sees have tended to operate in Northern California’s hill-bombing freakout mode, whereas Donovan and Sic Alps have always seemed more content in the Golden State’s fields of lysergic relaxation.
Sic Alps sidesteps nostalgia, and comes off as less concerned with genre and more concerned with why those sounds came about to begin with. While a lot of their peers have attempted (unsuccessfully, mostly) to beat down the doors of California’s psychedelic myth, Sic Alps have taken their time and found their own way there; in doing so they’ve created one of the best records of the year.

http://www.Mediafire.com/download.php?xxw7cu9hjvl8q5p
Thee Oh Sees, in my opinion, are one of the best bands around right now. I would describe this album as fun pop-rock on acid with a little distortion. Not quite as fast and hard as many of the albums of recent years have been, not nearly as slow as the first 5 or so albums. Feel free to check out the link to the opening track, which always makes me think of some children's puppet movie (on acid).

The Babies started as a side project between Kevin Morby from Woods and Cassie Ramane from Vivian Girls. Good folky, pop rock sound? I am not the best at articulating music. Some songs sound like Vivian Girls, but overall not an album that would blow you away but definitely very enjoyable. They are on tour now. Want a sample? Check out the opening track below.

Is it possible to get a re-up of this?
-
A) No
B) Link should still work fine anyway
C) See A & B
D) Rules for this thread:
- Repost the rules at the top of each new page

Okay, let's get some more christmasy claptrap in here. This is the first five volumes of Sufjan Stevens' xmas set, before he started getting all weird. These five came out as a 5 CD box set in 2006 or '07, I can't remember. Also came with a songbook and essays, which was sort of cool.

I was just going to take have just taken the date out of the title to let this one run on; it doesn't see the activity that it did years ago, and it's not really particularly tied to dates.
I've been wondering about that- what happened here? I stumbled across this forum years ago and found that there were plenty of amazing contributors and contributions. Nowadays I check on here once a month, if that, and it seems like it's barely there anymore. Did everyone just get older, like me, and get jobs and families and all that boring stuff, or did something specifically happen to make this thread wither?
-
Yeah, a bunch of us have moved on to other forums, other places, more exciting lives.
-
So a while ago I found this compilation of different genres of electronica. While much of it is common/obvious (or in some cases already posted), some of it probably isn't (?) and I thought it wouldn't hurt to offer to upload individual albums.
I just realized this list contains some typos, which I might fix later. Also some of the genre designations might be debatable but here it is as I found it.
Almost all of it is 320
Any/all of that list would be more than welcome!
-
so many cats,
Air - Moon Safari
and
Bjork - Homogenic ?
thanks in advance!
-
Noted! Uploads to follow...as soon as I finish my post-Christmas laziness.

St. Christopher - Lioness
(http://i47.tinypic.com/jgtvuc.jpg)
St. Christopher's approach lies on the slicker and less indie-oriented end of the Sarah Records roster, but the band's dedication to pure pop is no less appealing -- Lioness starts from dark, campy, almost-goth influences, adds a gleaming pop sheen, and winds up sounding something like Ian McCulloch's solo work.

Sun Ra - Jazz in Silhouette
(http://i49.tinypic.com/2poseww.jpg)
Throughout their mid-to-late-'50s stay in Chicago, Sun Ra (piano) and his Arkestra established themselves as formidable purveyors of a new strain or sub-genre of jazz. Having evolved from elaborate reworkings of familiar standards, Jazz in Silhouette (1959) presents a collection of originals, building upon Ra's abilities as a consummate multi-tasker -- writing, arranging, scoring parts for his band, in addition to performing. He stretches the boundaries of the music to suit the Arkestra, simultaneously progressing his distinct sound. Seminal readings of the quick and complex "Saturn" and "Velvet" are offered with unmatchable dexterity and precision. The latter title comes off like a confused version of "Jeepers Creepers" as Hobart Dotson (trumpet) prominently displays his unquestionable tonality. "Ancient Aiethopia" is one of the more involved works, both in terms of length -- running over nine minutes -- and the Arkestra's capacity for Ra's compositions. "Blues at Midnight" is another expansive (nearly 12 minutes) outing that, by contrast, is for the soloists rather than full ensemble. John Gilmore (tenor sax), Ronnie Boykins (bass), Pat Patrick (baritone sax), and Marshall Allen (alto sax) all shine behind William Cochran's (drums) solid contributions. Equally significant is the running dialogue Ra maintains during other musicians' leads, directing the ebb and flow with an uncanny fusion of melody and rhythm. Undoubtedly, this is a factor in the freshness the material retains. It is also a prime example of Ra and company in a transitional phase, prior to their full-fledged explorations into the avant-garde.

Art Farmer - To Sweden With Love
(http://i47.tinypic.com/ot3j3c.jpg)
The Art Farmer Quartet (consisting of flugelhornist Farmer, guitarist Jim Hall, bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Pete LaRoca), which was together from 1962-64 (after the demise of the Jazztet), was passing through Stockholm, Sweden at the time of this date and the musicians felt inspired to record a full album of traditional Swedish folk songs. Respect is paid to the often haunting melodies and Farmer sounds quite at home in this context, sometimes hinting a bit at Chet Baker. Fortunately, not all of the tunes are taken at a ballad pace, and once the themes are fully stated, Farmer and Hall have plenty of harmonically sophisticated solos. The band's cool and restrained style suits the music perfectly, turning it into jazz without losing its essence. Although a brief set (at under 33 minutes), every note counts on this successful outing.

Studio - West Coast
(http://i46.tinypic.com/1z6tl3l.jpg)
Studio are Swedish duo Dan Lissvik and Rasmus Hagg, and they play strung-out, “Balearic”-tinged, dance-friendly post-punk. Except that “play” probably isn’t the right word. I’m working on instinct rather than press releases here (Amazon don’t send you them), but I’d imagine that what the Swedes do is “assemble” their strung-out, “Balearic”-tinged, dance-friendly post-punk on a computer.
You could throw Studio in with the current crop of Europeans making dance waves, such as Justice, Simian Mobile Disco, or Digitalism, but you’d be doing the Swedes a disservice; post-punks in the club are far more interesting both sonically and formally than your typical punks in the club. “Out There” will be familiar to anyone who did manage to find Yearbook 1. A fifteen-minute instrumental opus that glides through reggae-tinged post-punk guitar shots, glistening keyboard runs, opaque sheets of ambience, and intricate maps of interlocking rhythmic elements, it sets a high bar for the 40 minutes of shimmering, reverbed, hypnotic, and fabricated (in the best possible way) postpunk / disco that follows.

Nero's Day at Disneyland - From Rotting Fantasylands
(http://i50.tinypic.com/6tpywz.jpg)
"From Rotting Fantasylands" starts off like a typical glitch album but quickly it is evident with the use of strange, reversed tribal vocals, haunting choir music, and the chaos of sound that Nero's Day at Disneyland are more than a simple run of the mill electronica band. Gurthermore, each song is distinctly unique from one another. (A problem I have noted within certain glitch bands is that the beeps and bloops, if the artist is not talented, offer an impression of redundancy). But the eclectic techniques Brock and Shon employ really take the genre to another level. "No Money Down, Low Monthly Payments" really encapsulates the album's name; it sounds like a tinkling dream place succumbing to screeching "technical difficulties," phantoms, eerie spooks that slink around merry-go-rounds and bring true horror to the haunted houses. Overall the album as a whole was a pleasure to listen to. My favorite tracks were "Stretched Linen over Contorted Bodies" (which features incredibly quick beats and intense progressions) and "Eulogy for Nick Galvas," which sounds like what would happen if a robot had a bad acid trip.

So when someone says 'does anyone want me tp upload the new X album?' we're not allowed to reply in the affirmative? Ridiculous.
-
I am considering replacing those rules, because of the changes in the activity here (and in other matters) since this thread's predecessor started about eight years ago.
-
I'm pretty sure the key is to search in the previous posts if you REALLY feel compelled to, and then set loose your inhibition and post whatever you want. Saturate the shit out of this thread, duder.

Hey guys i've been lurking this thread for a few years, i really hated that it only got to five pages in 2012. I'm going to try to make it a habit to upload a few albums here every month or so to not see this thread die.

http://www.m/f.com/?j4zpjejryagfook
this album got a lot of award nominations and press in 2012 because shortly before its release frank came out as bisexual, which isn't something you often see in the hip-hop music world. I like the album because it actually lives up to all of the talk surrounding it. It's more R&B than hip-hop anyway, and start to finish it's an incredible fuckin' album, whether you're into dudes, girls, or other.
I spooner'd the name, maybe it will take longer for MF to find and delete. Has anyone else noticed that they've really started closing down full album links?
-
It has gotten slow enough, that I think it is okay to let a few requests go. Nbd. :meh:
Or you could, yknow, let the rules of the thread/Paul's judgement dictate what does and doesn't happen.
-
I'll get back to thinking about this seriously when I have a little more time. Meanwhile, I would say that this thread has never been intended as a way to find stuff (there are whole sites - and associated lawsuits - dedicated to that), but as a way to offer stuff to others to intrigue or interest them. It is deliberately kept low-key to avoid attracting attention, and this will not change because the forum as a whole is ultimately linked to the comic - the music is a side interest and cannot be allowed to risk compromising the forum. How much interest there is in its contents depends on who's contributing at the time, and on who's looking.

Ducktails - The Flower Lane (2013)
Samples: The Flower Lane, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zngAG0qWp0) Letter of Intent (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mSg6k1oVpo)
The latest offering from Ducktails, the side project of Real Estate guitarist and generally chill dude Matt Mondanile. Until now, Ducktails has been a lo-fi solo project, but The Flower Lane features some very slick production and a full backing band courtesy of Big Troubles along with lots of exciting guests, including Cults indie girl Madeline Follin, synth wizard Daniel Lopatin (of Oneohtrix Point Never and Ford & Lopatin) and his frequent collaborator Joel Ford, and Real Estate bud Martin Courtney.
The newfound pop songwriting chops that Mondanile displayed on his last album, 2011’s Ducktails III: Arcade Dynamics, are back in full force here. Matty-boy seems more confident than ever, adding punchy piano and futuristic synths to the mix in addition to his usual effortlessly lovely guitar work and the ever-competent musicianship of his new backing band. The Real Estate connection is still readily apparent, but these new flourishes and an occasional 80’s soft-rock vibe help distinguish the tunes of his newest effort from those of his day job with the Real Estate boys.
Some good shit.

Follow link below to purchase album. Highly enjoyable, as sad as it is to seem Matt leave the Woodsist label. Looks like they might even have some of the 1st pressing left. First 300 copies made in 180 gram (one time only at this quality) vinyl hand made, letter pressed cover and insert. Following copies will be pressed at 150.

Has any one else had M/F tell them to go buy the album instead lately? Many of the things on this page give this message to me. Is that a U.S. thing, an M/F crackdown thing, or a me thing?
-
I think it's that M/F is cracking down pretty hard, unfortunately.
-
I have typically noticed with the file hosting website that changing the name of the zip or rar files to something that cannot be positively identified as a specific album (no words from the band or album names) then there are drastically fewer issues with these sites taking down content (i.e. ducktails - the flower lane became DTF)
-
That's what I do. Of course, I can't check to see if my links are working myself.
-
Well, I uploaded Ducktails - The Flower Lane as "Sliatkcud - Eht Rewolf Enal" at first. It got taken down, so I reupped it as "Waterfowlposteriors - A Hyacinth Road" and it got taken down again. It appears that Mediafire is catching on to my tricks...
-
I think they also check checksums of known files; try rearranging or reencoding the contents to get a different checksum.
-
They can check checksums of files inside of .zip files or is it the .zip files themselves?
-
No idea. I would expect whole files, as treating, say, encrypted and unencrypted zips differently would be less use to them.
-
so I reupped it as "Waterfowlposteriors - A Hyacinth Road"
nice....

Are there no other options than Mediafire that would be acceptable? They seem to catch everything pretty much instantly now.
-
I haven't used it for uploading stuff, but I'm sort of partial to Zippyshare recently.
-
Zippyshare does share the qualities that we used MF for - multiple simultaneous downloads, no wait time, maximum efficiency. Maybe a captchca once in a while, whatever. It is the new boogaloo.

The Tuvans have been on the world music stage for better than 20 years now, with the most well known ensemble being Huun-Huur-Tu. This is the second, and easily best, studio recording by a younger group called Alash. Their discs are available at a good rate direct from the band if you like it (otherwise the imports are pricey) Check out the youtube video below for an idea of what music from Tuva sounds like.

I remebered Adam Ant as the swishy Brit who sang "Strip" on the MTV when I was 7 years old or so, and had him stashed away in the dark corner of my brain where I keep all of the other embarrassingly bad music i heard when I was a child. So imagine my surprise when I found out that at least for a few years, he was halfway decent new wave punk rocker. And a bit of a weird one at that: Kings of the Wild Frontier is a mix of surf guitar, Native American war whoops, piratical shanties, and Burundi beat drumming. And at least for just this one album it mostly works.

This disc of Zorn's, from 2011, is the beginning of his series of "Mystical" works. These tend to be jazz influenced and very accessible, as opposed to the more abstract amorphous stuff in his more formal compositions. Anyway- if you've heard some weird noise from Zorn in the past that put you off, give this a chance. And if you've heard some weird noise from Zorn in the past that turned you on, you might like this anyway. The video above should give you a good idea.

So, there's this anime-influenced SRPG game on the 3DS called Fire Emblem: Awakening, and I've been playing an entirely unhealthy amount of it. It's like digital crack to me-- don't know if that means I aver others play it or not... But anyway, one point of nigh universal praise for the game was for it's soundtrack, a hint of which you get in the video above.
I done went and bought the complete soundtrack release, which weighs in at 4 discs of swelling orchestral war music. It's probably more enjoyable if you've played the game, but I don't think that's a prerequisite. I know this isn't the kind of music what usually get's posted in this thread, but since lately the music posted in this thread is nothing- I hope you won't mind. I promise the next post will be more conventional.
so, here it is- lossless ALAC. + an HD copy of the above intro video from a CD included with the soundtrack

Will Oldham in his Bonnie "Prince" Billy guise worked a bit with Mick Turner and Jim White of Dirty Three back around the late nineties and early 2000s. With Mick adopting the nome de plume "The Marquis de Tren" they produced an EP in 2000 called "Get On Jolly" using as lyrics the devotional poetry of Bengali polymath Rabindranath Tagore. Their respective fans rather liked it, but there was no followup until this week. It comes in the form of a rather short EP called "SOLEMNS", and despite the name it's quite a bit livelier than it's predecessor.
So here're both EPs- see what you think.

"Playing in various punkrock and hardcore bands Tim toughened up a bit, but during soundchecks you could often catch him singing them sing along accoustic songs. How deep those songs went became obvious when he started to write his own accoustic music.
They seem to be drenched in the familiar smell of morning breath still dieing from last night's whiskey and really, it never smelled this good.
Showing off his urge to be living life just a little bit more than we have been doing lately and a restlessness that makes today's youth look like a bunch of old men playing dominoes in the park, here's a guy who'll put it in the face of anyone willing to listen."

Dmitri Shostakovich - 24 Preludes and Fugues, Op 87 (Tatiana Nikolayeva, 1962)

Shostakovich was so impressed with Tatiana Nikolayeva's playing at a Bach festival in Leipzig in 1950 that he started writing preludes and fugues for her, and although he hadn't necessarily intended to compose a full set, his 24 Preludes and Fugues Opus 87 was complete within a year. She was the first to play the complete set in public, in 1952, and the first to record them, in 1962. She recorded the set twice more, in Russia in 1987 and in London in 1990, but the first set was always rumoured to be the best, and it has never been available in the west in any format. So, a real rarity for your delectation.

Well... Hello, thread. What happened, here? Have some music, maybe that'll get your blood pumping again.
I'm in a band, and we figure people might like our stuff. It's hopelessly labeled as Alt Rock, in a vein that shows we're inspired by bands like Smashing Pumpkins, Pedro the Lion, Brand New, and Foo Fighters, with a hint of "That Thing You Do" in one song. I hate drawing comparisons, so I'll cut the formalities.
Here (http://thecaldera.bandcamp.com/album/what-is-what-could-be). We recorded and produced it ourselves, and it's free. Try it on for size.

Even though many of the fine folks who have given me their music through this forum have likely moved on, I would like to give back to the community in some way. Maybe if I'm lucky I'll be able to share something that someone doesn't already have, maybe even something they like, or maybe not. Either way, let's give it a shot!
Edit: It's "Morning" not "Mourning" - I get it. Doh.

These guys played at a friend's house as a favor - they were super friendly!
"The band has an infectious, charming and uber melodic indie-pop sound with jangly guitars and a driving rhythm section reminiscent of The Cranberries." - Bruce Warren, Exec Producer of World Cafe of NPR
I guess I just trusted Bruce Warren over here to describe it better than I would. I know that I find them really catchy and melodic as well, and for some reason it's enough to put me in a good mood pretty much regardless of what else is going on - whether that good mood is superficial or not, who cares?

Tycho - Past is Prologue
Whoever posted his 2011 record Dive a while ago really did me a solid. I ended up buying (gasp!) this record from 2006 which is, for lack of a better word, beautiful. I even took the effort to upload the cover art because it's pretty beautiful too. Take a bath!
Bonus: I didn't know that "past is prologue" came from Shakespeare until today, I guess I have some reading to do...

I really dig this guy's voice. My friend showed me this video a year ago and while I loved it, I forgot all about Woodkid until I saw he was headlining a festival this summer in Barcelona which I plan to attend.
Anyway, I think it's a fun album and I'm looking forward to seeing him live - his short wikipedia page makes him sound pretty interesting. Best stage performer at 'Les Victoires de la Musique' , worked with Pharrell Williams and Kanye, etc.

Still my favourite BT track from the ESCM album of all time hands down, any other BT fans around?
-
Just wondering which website should be used to upload content for this thread? Is anyone still even into sharing music this way or have they moved on to greener pastures?

Man, I remember this thread from years ago... I miss it. Nostalgia.

I wish I could say the same. I only discovered it after the glory days, just as posts were starting to taper off. I'm just grateful for the multitude of paths that were laid out for me that I never would have trodden otherwise. It's been really formative for this confused young explorer.
